Let E be an elliptic curve over the rationals without complex multiplication. The absolute Galois group of Q acts on the group of torsion points of E, and this action can be expressed in terms of a Galois representation rho_E:Gal(Qbar/Q) \to GL_2(Zhat). A renowned theorem of Serre says that the image of rho_E is open, and hence has finite index, in GL_2(Zhat). We give the first general bounds of this index in terms of basic invariants of E. For example, the index can be bounded by a polynomial function of the logarithmic height of the j-invariant of E. As an application of our bounds, we settle an open question on the average of constants arising from the Lang-Trotter conjecture.
Using a multidimensional large sieve inequality, we obtain a bound for the mean square error in the Chebotarev theorem for division fields of elliptic curves that is as strong as what is implied by the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. As an application we prove a theorem to the effect that, according to height, almost all elliptic curves are Serre curves, where a Serre curve is an elliptic curve whose torsion subgroup, roughly speaking, has as much Galois symmetry as possible.
We study the weight part of (a generalisation of) Serre's conjecture for mod l Galois representations associated to automorphic representations on unitary groups of rank n for odd primes l. Given a modular Galois representation, we use automorphy lifting theorems to prove that it is modular in many other weights. We make no assumptions on the ramification or inertial degrees of l. We give an explicit strengthened result when n = 3 and l splits completely in the underlying CM field.
For $E/K$ an elliptic curve without complex multiplication we bound the index of the image of $\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{K}/K)$ in $\operatorname{GL}_2(\hat{\mathbb{Z}})$, the representation being given by the action on the Tate modules of $E$ at the various primes. The bound is effective and only depends on $[K:\mathbb{Q}]$ and on the stable Faltings height of $E$. We also prove a result relating the structure of subgroups of $\operatorname{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_\ell)$ to certain Lie algebras naturally attached to them.
Let πbe a unitary cuspidal automorphic representation for GL(n) over a number field. We establish upper bounds on the number of Hecke eigenvalues of πequal to a fixed complex number. For GL(2), we also determine upper bounds on the number of Hecke eigenvalues with absolute value equal to a fixed number γ; in the case γ=0, this answers a question of Serre. These bounds are then improved upon by restricting to non-dihedral representations. Finally, we obtain analogous bounds for a family of cuspidal automorphic representations for GL(3).
We first prove the existence of minimally ramified p-adic lifts of 2-dimensional mod p representations, that are odd and irreducible, of the absolute Galois group of Q,in many cases. This is predicted by Serre's conjecture that such representations arise from newforms of optimal level and weight. Using these minimal lifts, and arguments using compatible systems, we prove some cases of Serre's conjectures in low levels and weights. For instance we prove that there are no irreducible (p,p) type group schemes over the rational integers. We prove that a Galois representation as above of Artin cond…
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over the rationals that does not have complex multiplication. For each prime $\ell$, the action of the absolute Galois group on the $\ell$-torsion points of $E$ can be given in terms of a Galois representation $ρ_{E,\ell}\colon \operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q}) \to GL_2(\mathbb{F}_\ell)$. An important theorem of Serre says that $ρ_{E,\ell}$ is surjective for all sufficiently large $\ell$. In this paper, we describe a simple algorithm based on Serre's proof that can quickly determine the finite set of primes $\ell$ for which $ρ_{E,\ell}$ is not surject…
The "Nicolas-Serre code", $(a,b) \leftrightarrow t^{n}$, is a bijection between $N\times N$ and those $t^{n}$, $n$ odd, in $Z/2[t]$. Suppose $A_{n}$, $n$ odd, in $Z/2[t]$ are defined by: $A_{1}= A_{5}= 0$, $A_{3}= t$, $A_{7}= t^{5}$, and $A_{n+8}= t^{8} A_{n} + t^{2} A_{n+2}$. A lemma, Proposition 4.3 of [6], used to study the Hecke algebra attached to the space of mod $2$ level $1$ modular forms, gives information about the codes $(a,b)$ attached to the monomials appearing in $A_{n}$. The unpublished highly technical proof has been simplified by Gerbelli-Gauthier. Our Theorem 3.7 generalizes …
Suppose that $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication and with conductor $N$. For each positive integer $m$, the action of the absolute Galois group $G_{\mathbb{Q}}=\operatorname{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ on the torsion points over $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$ gives rise to a representation of $G_\mathbb{Q}$. A celebrated paper of Serre shows that this representation is surjective for all sufficiently large primes; the other primes are termed \emph{exceptional}. Serre conjectures that there are no exceptional primes $\ell>37$ for any non CM elliptic curv…
We gives an explicit genus 3 curve over Q such that the Galois action on the torsion points of its Jacobian is a large as possible. That such curves exist is a consequence of a theorem of D. Zureick-Brown and the author; however, those methods do not produce explicit examples. We shall apply the general strategies of Hall and Serre in their open image theorems. We also make use of Serre's conjecture to show that the modulo ell Galois actions are irreducible. While we computationally focus on a single curve, the methods of this paper can be applied to a large family of genus 3 curves.
Let $f(z)=\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} a_f(n)e^{2πi n z}$ be a non-CM holomorphic cupsidal newform of trivial nebentypus and even integral level $k\geq 2$. Deligne's proof of the Weil conjectures shows that $|a_f(p)|\leq 2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}$ for all primes $p$. We prove for 100% of primes $p$ that $2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}\frac{\log\log p}{\sqrt{\log p}}<|a_f(p)|<\lfloor 2p^{\frac{k-1}{2}}\rfloor$. Our proof gives an effective upper bound for the size of the exceptional set. The lower bound shows that the Atkin-Serre conjecture is satisfied for 100% of primes, and the upper bound shows that $|a_f(p)|$ is as l…
Inertial multiplicity bounds for two dimensional projective representations and bounds for the number of $\operatorname{PSL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ and $\operatorname{PGL}_2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ number fields
In this paper, we consider mod $\ell$ Galois representations of $\mathbb{Q}$. In particular, we obtain an effective criterion to distinguish two semisimple 2-dimensional, odd mod $\ell$ Galois representations up to isomorphism. Serre's conjecture (Khare-Wintenberger's theorem), Sturm's theorem, and its modification by Kohnen are used in our proof.
There are two famous Abel Theorems. Most well-known is his description of abelian (analytic) functions on a one dimensional compact complex torus. The other collects together those complex tori, with their prime degree isogenies, into one space. Riemann's generalization of the first features his famous theta functions. His deepest work aimed at extending Abel's second theorem; he died before he fulfilled this. That extension is often pictured on complex higher dimension torii. For Riemann, though, it was to spaces of Jacobians of compact Riemann surfaces, W, of genus g, toward studying functio…
We prove a companion forms theorem for ordinary n-dimensional automorphic Galois representations, by use of automorphy lifting theorems developed by the second author, and a technique for deducing companion forms theorems due to the first author. We deduce results about the possible Serre weights of mod l Galois representations corresponding to automorphic representations on unitary groups. We then use functoriality to prove similar results for automorphic representations of GSp4 over totally real fields.
In this paper, we study the graph of homothety classes of stable free lattices in a two-dimensional representation over a local UFD. This generalizes a classical result of the case where the base ring is a discrete valuation ring due to Serre. As applications, we consider the case when the representation comes from a residually reducible Hida family and we study the control theorem of Selmer groups. These results enable us to know the precise statement of the main conjecture in residually reducible case as we will remark in section 4 and section 5.
In this paper, we call strongly modular those reducible semi-simple odd mod $l$ Galois representations for which the conclusion of the strongest form of Serre's original modularity conjecture holds. Under the assumption that the Serre weight $k$ satisfies $l\textgreater{}k+1$, we give a precise characterization of strongly modular representations, hence generalizing a classical theorem of Ribet pertaining to the case of conductor $1$.When the representation $ρ$ is not strongly modular, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the primes $p$ not dividing $Nl$ for which it arises in level…
Let $G$ be a connected linear algebraic group over a number field $K$, let $Γ$ be a finitely generated Zariski dense subgroup of $G(K)$ and let $Z\subseteq G(K)$ be a thin set, in the sense of Serre. We prove that, if $G/\mathrm{R}_u(G)$ is semisimple and $Z$ satisfies certain necessary conditions, then a long random walk on a Cayley graph of $Γ$ hits elements of $Z$ with negligible probability. We deduce corollaries to Galois covers, characteristic polynomials, and fixed points in group actions. We also prove analogous results in the case where $K$ is a global function field.
According to a well-known theorem of Serre and Tate, the infinitesimal deformation theory of an abelian variety in positive characteristic is equivalent to the infinitesimal deformation theory of its Barsotti-Tate group. We extend this result to $1$-motives.
