We present photometry and spectropolarimetry of the pre-main sequence star HD 106506. A photometric rotational period of ~1.416 +/- 0.133 days has been derived using observations at Mount Kent Observatory (MKO). Spectropolarimetric data taken at the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) were used to derive spot occupancy and magnetic maps of the star through the technique of Zeeman Doppler imaging (ZDI). The resulting brightness maps indicate that HD 106506 displays photospheric spots at all latitudes including a predominant polar spot. Azimuthal and radial magnetic images of this star have been derived, and a significant azimuthal magnetic field is indicated, in line with other active young stars. A solar-like differential rotation law was incorporated into the imaging process. Using Stokes I information the equatorial rotation rate, $Ω_{eq}$, was found to be 4.54 +/- 0.01 rad/d, with a photospheric shear $δΩ$ of $0.21_{-0.03}^{+0.02}$ rad/d. This equates to an equatorial rotation period of ~1.39 +/- 0.01 days, with the equatorial region lapping the poles every ~$30_{-3}^{+5}$ days. Using the magnetic features, the equatorial rotation rate, $Ω_{eq}$, was found to be 4.51 +/- 0.01 rad/d, with a photospheric shear $δΩ$ of 0.24 +/- 0.03 rad/d. This differential rotation is approximately 4 times that observed on the Sun.
We investigate the formation of dust in a stellar wind during the red-supergiant (RSG) phase of a very massive Population III star with the zero-age main sequence mass of 500 M_sun. We show that, in a carbon-rich wind with a constant velocity, carbon grains can form with a lognormal-like size distribution, and that all of the carbon available for dust formation finally condense into dust for wide ranges of the mass-loss rate ((0.1-3)x10^{-3} M_sun yr^{-1}) and wind velocity (1-100 km s^{-1}). We also find that the acceleration of the wind driven by newly formed dust suppresses the grain growth…
On the basis of an extensive new spectroscopic survey of Galactic O stars, we introduce the Ofc category, which consists of normal spectra with C III λ\lambda4647-4650-4652 emission lines of comparable intensity to those of the Of defining lines N III λ\lambda4634-4640-4642. The former feature is strongly peaked to spectral type O5, at all luminosity classes, but preferentially in some associations or clusters and not others. The relationships of this phenomenon to the selective C III \lambda5696 emission throughout the normal Of domain, and to the peculiar, variable Of?p category, for which s…
Spectropolarimetric observations of the pre-main sequence early-G star HD 141943 were obtained at three observing epochs (2007, 2009 and 2010). The observations were obtained using the 3.9-m Anglo-Australian telescope with the UCLES echelle spectrograph and the SEMPOL spectropolarimeter visitor instrument. The brightness and surface magnetic field topologies (given in Paper I) were used to determine the star's surface differential rotation and reconstruct the coronal magnetic field of the star. The coronal magnetic field at the 3 epochs shows on the largest scales that the field structure is d…
We discuss low-frequency g modes excited by resonant couplings with weakly unstable oscillatory convective modes in the rotating convective core in early-type main-sequence stars. Our non-adiabatic pulsation analyses including the effect of Coriolis force for $2\,M_\odot$ main-sequence models show that if the convective core rotates slightly faster than the surrounding radiative layers, g modes in the radiative envelope are excited by a resonance coupling. The frequency of the excited g mode in the inertial frame is close to $|mΩ_{\rm c}|$ with $m$ and $Ω_{\rm c}$ being the azimuthal order of …
Recent observations suggest the existence of two characteristic cycle times for early-type M stars dependent on the rotation period. They are of order one year for the fast rotators ($P_{\rm rot}<1$ day) and of order 4 years for the slower rotators. Additionally, the equator-to-pole differences of the rotation rates with $δΩ$ up to 0.03 rad d$^{-1}$ are known from Kepler data for the fast-rotating stars. These values are well-reproduced by the theory of large-scale flows in rotating convection zones on the basis of the $Λ$ effect. The resulting amplitudes $u^{\rm m}$ of the bottom value of the…
CARMENES is a spectrograph for radial velocity surveys of M dwarfs with the aim of detecting Earth-mass planets orbiting in the habitable zones of their host stars. To ensure an optimal use of the CARMENES Guaranteed Time Observations, in this paper we investigate the correlation of activity and rotation for approximately 2200 M dwarfs, ranging in spectral type from M0.0 V to M9.0 V. We present new high-resolution spectroscopic observations with FEROS, CAFE, and HRS of approximately 500 M dwarfs. For each new observation, we determined its radial velocity and measured its Halpha activity index…
Context: The internal characteristics of stars, such as their core rotation rates, are obtained via asteroseismic observations. A comparison of core rotation rates found in this way with core rotation rates as predicted by stellar evolution models demonstrate a large discrepancy. This means that there must be a process of angular momentum transport missing in the current theory of stellar evolution. A new formalism was recently proposed to fill in for this missing process, which has the Tayler instability as its starting point (hereafter referred to as `Fuller-formalism'). Aims: We investigate…
A revised rotation-vibration line list for the combined hydrogen cyanide (HCN) / hydrogen isocyanide (HNC) system is presented. The line list uses {\it ab initio} transition intensities calculated previously (Harris et al., ApJ, 2002, 578, 657) and extensive datasets of recently measured experimental energy levels (Mellau, J. Chem. Phys. and J. Mol. Spectrosc. 2010-2011). The resulting line list has significantly more accurate wavelengths than previous ones for these systems. An improved value for the separation between HCN and HNC is adopted leading to an approximately 25%\ lower predicted th…
Since the external regions of the envelopes of rapidly rotating early-type stars are unstable to convection, a coupling may exist between the convection and the internal rotation. We explore what can be learned from spectroscopic and interferometric observations about the properties of the rotation law in the external layers of these objects. Using simple relations between the entropy and specific rotational quantities, some of which are found to be efficient at accounting for the solar differential rotation in the convective region, we derived analytical solutions that represent possible diff…
The first stars are thought to be one of the dominant sources of hydrogen reionization in the early Universe, with their high luminosities and surface temperatures expected to drive high ionizing photon production rates. In this work, we take our Geneva stellar evolution models of zero-metallicity stars and predict their production rates of photons capable to ionize H, He I and He II, based on a blackbody approximation. We present analytical fits in the range 1.7-500 solar masses. We then explore the impact of stellar initial mass, rotation, and convective overshooting for individual stars. We…
Magnetic confinement of stellar winds leads to the formation of magnetospheres, which can be sculpted into Centrifugal Magnetospheres (CMs) by rotational support of the corotating plasma. The conditions required for the CMs of magnetic early B-type stars to yield detectable emission in H$α$ -- the principal diagnostic of these structures -- are poorly constrained. A key reason is that no detailed study of the magnetic and rotational evolution of this population has yet been performed. Using newly determined rotational periods, modern magnetic measurements, and atmospheric parameters determined…
Some chemically peculiar stars in the upper main sequence show rotational period variations of unknown origin. We propose these variations are a consequence of the propagation of internal waves in magnetic rotating stars that lead to the torsional oscillations of the star. We simulate the magnetohydrodynamic waves and calculate resonant frequencies for two stars that show rotational variations: CU Vir and HD 37776. We provide updated analyses of rotational period variations in these stars and compare our results with numerical models. For CU Vir, the length of the observed rotational-period cy…
We combine recently computed models of stellar evolution using a new treatment of rotation with a Bayesian statistical framework to constrain the ages and other properties of early-type stars. We find good agreement for early-type stars and clusters with known young ages, including beta Pictoris, the Pleiades, and the Ursa Majoris Moving Group. However, we derive a substantially older age for the Hyades open cluster (750+/-100 Myr compared to 625+/-50 Myr). This older age results from both the increase in main-sequence lifetime with stellar rotation and from the fact that rotating models near …
Recent observations of the low-mass rotation distributions of the Pleiades and Praesepe clusters have revealed a ubiquitous correlation between mass and rotation, such that late M dwarfs rotate an order-of-magnitude faster than early M dwarfs. In this paper, we demonstrate that this mass-rotation correlation is present in the 10 Myr Upper Scorpius association, as revealed by new ${\it K2}$ rotation measurements. Using rotational evolution models we show that the low-mass ($0.1-0.6 M_{\odot}$) rotation distribution of the 125 Myr Pleiades cluster can only be produced if it hosted an equally str…
The understanding of the rotational evolution of early-type stars is deeply related to that of anisotropic mass and angular momentum loss. In this paper, we aim to clarify the rotational evolution of rapidly rotating early-type stars along the main sequence (MS). We have used the 2D ESTER code to compute and evolve isolated rapidly rotating early-type stellar models along the MS, with and without anisotropic mass loss. We show that stars with $Z=0.02$ and masses between $5$ and $7~M_\odot$ reach criticality during the main sequence provided their initial angular velocity is larger than 50% of …
Massive stars play a key role in the evolution of the Universe. Our goal is to compare observed and predicted properties of single Galactic O stars to identify and constrain uncertain physical parameters and processes in stellar evolution and atmosphere models. We used a sample of 53 objects with spectral types from O3 to O9.7. For 30 of these, we determined the main photospheric and wind parameters, using optical spectroscopy and applying the FASTWIND code. For the remaining objects, literature data, obtained by means of the CMFGEN code, were used instead. The properties of our sample were co…
The availability of asteroseismic constraints for a large sample of stars from the missions CoRoT and Kepler paves the way for various statistical studies of the seismic properties of stellar populations. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of rotation-induced mixing and thermohaline instability on the global asteroseismic parameters at different stages of the stellar evolution from the Zero Age Main Sequence to the Thermally Pulsating Asymptotic Giant Branch to distinguish stellar populations. We present a grid of stellar evolutionary models for four metallicities (Z = 0.0001, 0.002, 0.004,…
To accurately predict the space weather effects of coronal mass ejection (CME) impacts at Earth one must know if and when a CME will impact Earth, and the CME parameters upon impact. Kay et al. (2015b) presents Forecasting a CME's Altered Trajectory (ForeCAT), a model for CME deflections based on the magnetic forces from the background solar magnetic field. Knowing the deflection and rotation of a CME enables prediction of Earth impacts, and the CME orientation upon impact. We first reconstruct the positions of the 2008 April 10 and the 2012 July 12 CMEs from the observations. The first of the…
[Abridged] We present a new grid of massive population III star models including the effects of rotation on the stellar structure and chemical mixing, and magnetic torques for the transport of angular momentum. Based on the grid, we also present a phase diagram for the expected final fates of rotating massive Pop III stars. Our non-rotating models become redder than the previous models in the literature, given the larger overshooting parameter adopted in this study. In particular, convective dredge-up of the helium core material into the hydrogen envelope is observed in our non-rotating very m…
We propose a new neutron-capture site in early metal-poor and metal-free stars of $\sim 20$--$30 \,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ that results from proton ingestion in the He shell during late stages of the stars' lives. Most of the neutron capture occurs in the first $\lesssim 10^6\,$s following proton ingestion when $^{13}{\rm C}(α,\mathrm{n})^{16}\mathrm{O}$ produces neutron densities typical of the intermediate neutron-capture process. This phase may be followed by another lasting $\gtrsim 10^7\,$s with $^{17}\mathrm{O}(α,\mathrm{n})^{20}\mathrm{Ne}$ producing much lower neutron densities typical of th…
(abridged) We present a new tool for building synthetic colour-magnitude diagrams of coeval stellar populations. We study, from a theoretical point of view, the impact of axial rotation of stars on various observed properties of single-aged stellar populations: magnitude at the turnoff, photometric properties of evolved stars, surface velocities, surface abundances, and the impact of rotation on the age determination of clusters by an isochrone fitting. Stellar models for different initial masses, metallicities, and zero-age main sequence (ZAMS) rotational velocities are used for building inte…
Very massive stars are thought to be formed in the early Universe because of a lack of cooling process by heavy elements, and might have been responsible for the later evolution of the Universe. We had an interest in vibrational stability of their evolution and carried out the linear nonadiabatic analysis of radial and nonradial oscillations for population III very massive main-sequence stars with $500-3000M_{\sun}$. We found that only the radial fundamental mode becomes unstable due to the $\varepsilon$-mechanism for these stars. The instability appears just after the CNO cycle is activated a…
We derive stellar parameters and abundances (`stellar labels') of 40,034 late-B and A-type main-sequence stars extracted from the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fiber Spectroscopic Telescope Medium Resolution Survey (LAMOST--MRS). The primary selection of our early-type sample was obtained from LAMOST Data Release 7 based on spectral line indices. We employed the Stellar LAbel Machine (SLAM) to derive their spectroscopic stellar parameters, drawing on Kurucz spectral synthesis models with 6000 K $< T_\mathrm{eff} <$ 15,000 K and $-1$ dex $< \mathrm{[M/H]} <$ 1 dex. For a signal-to-noise ratio of …
Aims: Projected rotational velocities (\vsini) have been estimated for 334 targets in the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula survey that do not manifest significant radial velocity variations and are not supergiants. They have spectral types from approximately O9.5 to B3. The estimates have been analysed to infer the underlying rotational velocity distribution, which is critical for understanding the evolution of massive stars. Methods: Projected rotational velocities were deduced from the Fourier transforms of spectral lines, with upper limits also being obtained from profile fitting. For the narrower line…
The nature of the first massive stars may be inferred by investigating the origin of the extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars, likely formed from the ejecta of one or a few previous massive stars. We investigate the rotational properties of early massive stars by comparing the abundance patterns of EMP stars with rotating massive stellar models. Low metallicity 20 $M_{\odot}$ stellar models with initial rotation rates between 0 and $70~\%$ of the critical velocity are computed. Explosions with strong fallback are assumed. The ejected material is considered to fit individually the abundance pattern…

Based on high-resolution spectra obtained with PHOENIX at Gemini-South, CRIRES at VLT-UT1, and ESPaDOnS at CFHT, we present new measurements of the radial and projected rotational velocities of 219 low-mass stars. The target likely membership was initially established using the Bayesian analysis tool recently presented in \citet{2013malo}, taking into account only the position, proper motion and photometry of the stars to assess their membership probability. In the present study, we include radial velocity as an additional input to our analysis, and in doing so we confirm the high membership p…
We present projected rotational velocities and new measurements of the rotational profile of some 180 nearby stars with spectral types A-F. The overall broadening profile is derived analysing spectral line shape from hundreds of spectral lines by the method of least-squares deconvolution. Rigid and differential rotation can be distinguished in 56 cases. Ten stars with significant differential rotation rates are identified. As of now, 33 differential rotators detected by line profile analysis have been confirmed. The frequency of differential rotators decreases towards high effective temperatur…
Context: Population III (Pop III) stars may be fast rotating. An expected consequence of fast rotation is strong internal mixing that deeply affects their evolutionary tracks in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and hence their ionising power. aims: We investigate the impact on the ionising power of Pop III stars in an extreme case of internal mixing, the one leading to chemically homogeneous evolution (CHE). In that situation, during the main sequence phase, the star keeps the same chemical composition from its center to its surface. Homogeneous stars have larger effective temperatures and lumi…
We study the formation of molecular precursors to dust in the ejecta of Population III supernovae using a chemical kinetic approach. Our work focuses on zero-metallicity 20 Msun and 170 Msun progenitors, and we consider fully-macroscopically mixed and unmixed ejecta. The nucleation stage for small silica, metal oxides and sulphides, pure metal, and carbon clusters is described with a new chemical reaction network. We consider the effect of the pressure dependence of critical nucleation rates, and test the impact of microscopically-mixed He+ on carbon dust formation. The unmixed ejecta of a 170…
Low-mass stars are currently the most promising targets for detecting and characterizing habitable planets in the solar neighborhood. However, the ultraviolet (UV) radiation emitted by such stars can erode and modify planetary atmospheres over time, drastically affecting their habitability. Thus knowledge of the UV evolution of low-mass stars is critical for interpreting the evolutionary history of any orbiting planets. Shkolnik & Barman (2014) used photometry from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) to show how UV emission evolves for early type M stars ($>$0.35 $M_\odot$). In this paper, w…
We use Kepler/K2 lightcurves to measure rotation periods of brown dwarfs and very low mass stars in the Upper Scorpius star-forming region. Our sample comprises a total of 104 periods. Depending on the assumed age of Upper Scorpius, about a third of them are for brown dwarfs. The median period is 1.28 d for the full sample and 0.84 d for the probable brown dwarfs. With this period sample, we find compelling evidence for early rotational braking in brown dwarfs, caused by the interaction between the central object and the disk. The median period for objects with disks is at least 50% longer tha…
We systematically investigated the heating of coronal loops on metal-free stars with various stellar masses and magnetic fields by magnetohydrodynamic simulations. It is found that the coronal property is dependent on the coronal magnetic field strength $B_{\rm c}$ because it affects the difference of the nonlinearity of the Alfvénic waves. Weaker $B_{\rm c}$ leads to cooler and less dense coronae because most of the input waves dissipate in the lower atmosphere on account of the larger nonlinearity. Accordingly EUV and X-ray luminosities also correlate with $B_{\rm c}$, while they are emitted…
After the Big Bang nucleosynthesis, the first heavy element enrichment in the Universe was made by a supernova (SN) explosion of a population (Pop) III star (Pop III SN). The abundance ratios of elements produced from Pop III SNe are recorded in abundance patterns of extremely metal-poor (EMP) stars. The observations of the increasing number of EMP stars have made it possible to statistically constrain the explosion properties of Pop III SNe. We present Pop III SN models whose nucleosynthesis yields well-reproduce individually the abundance patterns of 48 such metal-poor stars as [Fe/H] $\math…
Stellar rotation periods can be determined by observing brightness variations caused by active magnetic regions transiting visible stellar disk as the star rotates. The successful stellar photometric surveys stemming from the Kepler and TESS observations led to the determination of rotation periods in tens of thousands of young and active stars. However, there is still a lack of information about rotation periods of older and less active stars, like the Sun. The irregular temporal profiles of light curves caused by the decay times of active regions, which are comparable to or even shorter than…
We leverage new high-quality data from Hubble Space Telescope program GO-14164 to explore the variation in horizontal branch morphology among globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Our new observations lead to photometry with a precision commensurate with that available for the Galactic globular cluster population. Our analysis indicates that, once metallicity is accounted for, clusters in the LMC largely share similar horizontal branch morphologies regardless of their location within the system. Furthermore, the LMC clusters possess, on average, slightly redder morphologies th…
Angular momentum is a key property regulating star formation and evolution. However, the physics driving the distribution of the stellar rotation rates of early-type main-sequence stars is as yet poorly understood. Using our catalog of 40,034 early-type stars with homogeneous $v\sin i$ parameters, we review the statistical properties of their stellar rotation rates. We discuss the importance of possible contaminants, including binaries and chemically peculiar stars. Upon correction for projection effects and rectification of the error distribution, we derive the distributions of our sample's e…
We study the formation and destruction of molecules in the ejecta of Population III supernovae (SNe) using a chemical kinetic approach to follow the evolution of molecular abundances from day 100 to day 1000 after explosion. The chemical species included range from simple di-atomic molecules to more complex dust precursor species. All relevant chemical processes that are unique to the SN environment are considered. Our work focuses on zero-metallicity progenitors with masses of 20, 170, and 270 Msun, and we study the effect of different levels of heavy element mixing and the inward diffusion o…
Young low-mass stars of equal-mass exhibit a distribution of rotation periods. At the very early phases of stellar evolution, this distribution is set by the star-disc locking mechanism. The primordial disc lifetime and, consequently, the duration of the disc-locking mechanism, can be significantly shortened by the presence of a close companion, making the rotation period distribution of close binaries different from that of either single stars or wide binaries. We use new data to investigate and better constrain the range of ages, the components separation and the mass ratio dependence at whi…
We present a catalogue of rotation and chromospheric activity in a sample of 334 M dwarfs of spectral types M0--M4.5 populating the parameter space around the boundary to full convection. We obtained high-resolution optical spectra for 206 targets and determined projected rotational velocity, vsini, and Halpha emission. The data are combined with measurements of vsini in field stars of the same spectral type from the literature. Our sample adds 157 new rotation measurements to the existing literature and almost doubles the sample of available vsini. The final sample provides a statistically me…
We present Atacama Large Millimeter/ sub-millimeter Array (ALMA) observations of V883 Ori, an FU Ori object. We describe the molecular outflow and envelope of the system based on the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO emissions, which together trace a bipolar molecular outflow. The C$^{18}$O emission traces the rotational motion of the circumstellar disk. From the $^{12}$CO blue-shifted emission, we estimate a wide opening angle of $\sim$ 150$^{^{\circ}}$ for the outflow cavities. Also, we find that the outflow is very slow (characteristic velocity of only 0.65 km~s$^{-1}$), which is unique for an FU Ori…
The prevalence of substructures in $\sim1-10$ Myr old protoplanetary disks, which are often linked to planet formation, has raised the question of how early such features form, and as a corollary, how early planet formation begins. Here we present observations of seven protostellar disks (aged $\sim0.1-1$ Myr) from the VLA/ALMA Nascent Disk and Multiplicity Survey of Orion Protostars (VANDAM: Orion) that show clear substructures, thereby demonstrating that these features can form early in the lifetimes of disks. We use simple analytic models as well as detailed radiative transfer modeling to c…
Class III stars are those in star forming regions without large non-photospheric infrared emission, suggesting recent dispersal of their protoplanetary disks. We observed 30 class III stars in the 1-3 Myr Lupus region with ALMA at ${\sim}856μ$m, resulting in 4 detections that we attribute to circumstellar dust. Inferred dust masses are $0.036{-}0.093M_\oplus$, ${\sim}1$ order of magnitude lower than any previous measurements; one disk is resolved with radius ${\sim}80$ au. Two class II sources in the field of view were also detected, and 11 other sources, consistent with sub-mm galaxy number c…
While stellar rotation periods $P_\mathrm{rot}$ may be measured from broadband photometry, the photometric modulation becomes harder to detect for slower rotators, which could bias measurements of the long-period tail of the $P_\mathrm{rot}$ distribution. Alternatively, the $P_\mathrm{rot}$ distribution of stars can be inferred from their projected rotation velocities $v\sin i$ and radii $R$, without being biased against photometrically quiet stars. We solve this inference problem using a hierarchical Bayesian framework, which (i) is applicable to heteroscedastic measurements of $v\sin i$ and …
Non-ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processes -- namely Ohmic resistivity, ambipolar diffusion and the Hall effect -- modify the early stages of the star formation process and the surrounding environment. Collectively, they have been shown to promote disc formation and promote or hinder outflows. But which non-ideal process has the greatest impact? Using three-dimensional smoothed particle radiation non-ideal MHD simulations, we model the gravitational collapse of a rotating, magnetised cloud through the first hydrostatic core phase to shortly after the formation of the stellar core. We invest…
We present a spatio-kinematical analysis of the CO~($J$=2$\rightarrow$1) line emission, observed with the Atacama Large Millimter/submillimter Array (ALMA), of the outflow associated with the most massive core, ALMA1, in the 70 $μ$m dark clump G010.991$-$00.082. The position-velocity (P-V) diagram of the molecular outflow exhibits a peculiar $\mathsf{S}$-shaped morphology that has not been seen in any other star forming region. We propose a spatio-kinematical model for the bipolar molecular outflow that consists of a decelerating high-velocity component surrounded by a slower component whose v…
This work aims at presenting the first two-dimensional models of an isolated rapidly rotating star that include the derivation of the differential rotation and meridional circulation in a self-consistent way.We use spectral methods in multidomains, together with a Newton algorithm to determine the steady state solutions including differential rotation and meridional circulation for an isolated non-magnetic, rapidly rotating early-type star. In particular we devise an asymptotic method for small Ekman numbers (small viscosities) that removes the Ekman boundary layer and lifts the degeneracy of …
