We report electronic structure calculations of an iron impurity in gold host. The spin, orbital and dipole magnetic moments were investigated using the LDA+$U$ correlated band theory. We show that the {\em around-mean-field}-LDA+$U$ reproduces the XMCD experimental data well and does not lead to formation of a large orbital moment on the Fe atom. Furthermore, exact diagonalization of the multi-orbital Anderson impurity model with the full Coulomb interaction matrix and the spin-orbit coupling is performed in order to estimate the spin Hall angle. The obtained value $γ_S \approx 0.025$ suggests that there is no giant extrinsic spin Hall effect due to scattering on iron impurities in gold.
Anomalous Hall effect (AHE) can be induced by intrinsic mechanism due to the band Berry phase and extrinsic one arising from the impurity scattering. The recently discovered magnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2 exhibits a large intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) and a giant anomalous Hall angle (AHA). The predicted energy dependence of the AHC in this material exhibits a plateau at 1000 Ω-1 cm-1 and an energy width of 100 meV just below EF, thereby implying that the large intrinsic AHC will not significantly change against small-scale energy disturbances such as slight p-doping. Here, we …
The origins of the spin-orbit torque (SOT) at ferromagnet/topological insulator (FM/TI) interfaces are incompletely understood. Theory has overwhelmingly focussed on the Edelstein effect due to the surface states in the presence of a scalar scattering potential. We investigate here the contribution to the SOT due to extrinsic spin-orbit scattering of the surface states, focusing on the case of an out-of-plane magnetization. We show that spin-orbit scattering brings about a sizable renormalization of the field-like SOT, which exceeds 20$\%$ at larger strengths of the extrinsic spin-orbit parame…
Coherent Behavior and Nonmagnetic Impurity Effects of the Spin Disordered State in NiGa$_2$S$_4$
Spin currents in ferromagnets afford diverse functionalities. We evaluate the extrinsic spin Hall effects of magnetic impurity scattering in ferromagnetic metals. We show that spin-dependent scattering can provide a high spin current polarized perpendicularly to the magnetization direction and is a dominant mechanism in the moderate-conductivity regime. We find that the superposition of the spin-conserve and spin-flip channels causes the spin currents. These findings suggest that optimizing alloy composition is an effective strategy to control the spin Hall effect.
A reentrant temperature dependence of the thermoresistivity $ρ_{\mathrm{xx}}(T)$ between an onset local superconducting ordering temperature $T_\mathrm{loc}^\mathrm{onset}$ and a global superconducting transition at $T=T_\mathrm{glo}^\mathrm{offset}$ has been reported in disordered conventional 3-dimensional (3D) superconductors. The disorder of these superconductors is a result of either an extrinsic granularity due to grain boundaries, or of an intrinsic granularity ascribable to the electronic disorder originating from impurity dopants. Here, the effects of Fe doping on the electronic prope…
We illustrate the emergence of the three-channel Kondo effect in a seven-orbital impurity Anderson model hybridized with $Γ_7$ and $Γ_8$ conduction electron bands employing a numerical renormalization group method. In particular, we focus on the case with ten local $f$ electrons corresponding to a Ho$^{3+}$ ion. By investigating the dependence of the low-temperature behavior of the $f$-electron entropy on the crystalline electric field potential and hybridization, we found a residual entropy of $\log ϕ$ with the golden ratio $ϕ=(1+\sqrt{5})/2$, characteristic of the three-channel Kondo effect,…
We have grown single crystals of the iron-based ladder material BaFe_2S_3, which is superconductive under high pressure, adopting different conditions. By comparing the behaviors of these samples, it is found that the in situ annealing process can affect the crystal structure and the electrical transport, enhance the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, and reduce the extrinsic ferromagnetic component of the system. An in-depth analysis indicates that the crystal quality is improved by the in situ annealing in terms of reducing both the Fe deficiency and the Fe impurity in the samples. Th…
Current-induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) in normal metal/ferromagnet (NM/FM) bilayers bears great promise for technological applications, but the microscopic origin of purely interfacial SOTs in ultra-thin systems is not yet fully understood. Here, we show that a linear response theory with a nonperturbative treatment of spin-dependent interactions and impurity scattering potential predicts damping-like SOTs that are strictly absent in perturbative approaches. The technique is applied to a two-dimensional Rashba-coupled ferromagnet (the paradigmatic model of a NM/FM interface), where higher-ord…
Skew scattering of electrons induced by a spin cluster is studied theoretically focusing on metals with localized magnetic moments. The scattering probability is calculated by a non-perturbative $T$ matrix method; this method is valid for arbitrary strength of electron-spin coupling. We show the scattering of electrons by a three-spin cluster produces a skew angle of order $0.1π$ rad when the electron-spin coupling is comparable to the bandwidth. This is one or two orders of magnitude larger than the usual skew angle by an impurity with spin-orbit interaction. Systematic analysis of the scatte…
