We study thermalization of a two-component Bose-Hubbard model by exact diagonalization. Initially the two components do not interact and are each at equilibrium but with different temperatures. As the on-site inter-component interaction is turned on, perfect thermalization occurs. Remarkably, not merely those simple "realistic" physical observables thermalize but even the density matrix of the \textit{whole} system---the time-averaged density matrix of the system can be well approximated by that of a canonical ensemble. A conjecture about this fact is put forward.
We study the threshold for chaos and its relation to thermalization in the 1D mean-field Bose-Hubbard model, which in particular describes atoms in optical lattices. We identify the threshold for chaos, which is finite in the thermodynamic limit, and show that it is indeed a precursor of thermalization. Far above the threshold, the state of the system after relaxation is governed by the usual laws of statistical mechanics.
We apply the Bogoliubov inequality to the Bose-Hubbard model to rule out the possibility of Bose-Einstein condensation. The result holds in one and two dimensions, for any filling at any nonzero temperature. This result can be considered as complementary to analogous, classical result known for interacting bosons in continuum.
We consider a fermionic Hubbard chain with an additional next-to-nearest neighbor hopping term. We study the thermalization rates of the quasi-momentum distribution function within a quantum Boltzmann equation approach. We find that the thermalization rates are proportional to the square of the next-to-nearest neighbor hopping: Even weak next-to-nearest neighbor hopping in addition to nearest neighbor hopping leads to thermalization in a two-particle scattering quantum Boltzmann equation in one dimension. We also investigate the temperature dependence of the thermalization rates, which away fr…
The Lieb-Robinson bound asserts the existence of a maximal propagation speed for the quantum dynamics of lattice spin systems. Such general bounds are not available for most bosonic lattice gases due to their unbounded local interactions. Here we establish for the first time a general ballistic upper bound on macroscopic particle transport in the paradigmatic Bose-Hubbard model. The bound is the first to cover a broad class of initial states with positive density including Mott states, which resolves a longstanding open problem. It applies to Bose-Hubbard type models on any lattice with not to…
By calculating correlation functions for the Lieb-Liniger model based on the algebraic Bethe ansatz method, we conduct a finite-size scaling analysis of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) which is considered to be a possible mechanism of thermalization in isolated quantum systems. We find that the ETH in the weak sense holds in the thermodynamic limit even for an integrable system although it does not hold in the strong sense. Based on the result of the finite-size scaling analysis, we compare the contribution of the weak ETH to thermalization with that of yet another thermalizatio…
Quasi-equilibrium relaxational thermodynamics is developed to understand LA-phonon-assisted thermalization of Bose-Einstein distributed excitons in quantum wells. We study the quantum-statistical effects in the relaxational dynamics of the effective temperature of excitons $T = T(t)$. When $T$ is less than the degeneracy temperature $T_0$, well-developed Bose-Einstein statistics of quantum well excitons leads to nonexponential and density-dependent thermalization. At low bath temperatures $T_b \to 0$ the thermalization of quantum-statistically degenerate excitons effectively slows down and $T(…
A Bose gas in a double-well potential, exhibiting a true Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) amplitude and initially performing Josephson oscillations, is a prototype of an isolated, non-equilibrium many-body system. We investigate the quasiparticle (QP) creation and thermalization dynamics of this system by solving the time-dependent Keldysh-Bogoliubov equations. We find avalanche-like QP creation due to a parametric resonance between BEC and QP oscillations, followed by slow, exponential relaxation to a thermal state at an elevated temperature, controlled by the initial excitation energy of the o…
We study the possible breakdown of quantum thermalization in a model of itinerant electrons on a one-dimensional chain without disorder, with both spin and charge degrees of freedom. The eigenstates of this model exhibit peculiar properties in the entanglement entropy, the apparent scaling of which is modified from a "volume law" to an "area law" after performing a partial, site-wise measurement on the system. These properties and others suggest that this model realizes a new, non-thermal phase of matter, known as a quantum disentangled liquid (QDL). The putative existence of this phase has st…
In this thesis, we present a comprehensive study of chaos and thermalization of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard Model (BHM) within the classical field approximation. Two quantitative measures are compared: the ensemble-averaged Finite-time Maximal Lyapunov exponent, a measures of chaos and the normalized spectral entropy, a measure of the distance between the numerical time-averaged momentum distribution and the one predicted by thermodynamics. A threshold for chaos is found, which depends on two parameters, the nonlinearity and the total energy-per-particle. Below the threshold, the dynamics…
If and how an isolated quantum system thermalizes despite its unitary time evolution is a long-standing, open problem of many-body physics. The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) postulates that thermalization happens at the level of individual eigenstates of a system's Hamiltonian. However, the ETH requires stringent conditions to be validated, and it does not address how the thermal state is reached dynamically from an inital non-equilibrium state. We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a double-well potential with an initial population imbalance. We find that the sy…
We study the thermal quantum correlations and entanglement in spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model with two and three particles. While we use negativity to calculate entanglement, more general non-classical correlations are quantified using a new measure based on a necessary and sufficient condition for zero-discord state. We demonstrate that the energy level crossings in the ground state of the system are signalled by both the behavior of thermal quantum correlations and entanglement.
We compute ground state fidelity of the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model at unit filling factor. To this aim, we apply the DMRG algorithm to systems with open and periodic boundary conditions. We find that fidelity differs significantly in the two cases and study its scaling properties in the quantum critical regime.
We show that the critical point of the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model can be easily found through studies of either on-site atom number fluctuations or the nearest-neighbor two-point correlation function (the expectation value of the tunnelling operator). Our strategy to locate the critical point is based on the observation that the derivatives of these observables with respect to the parameter that drives the superfluid-Mott insulator transition are singular at the critical point in the thermodynamic limit. Performing the quantum Monte Carlo simulations of the two-dimensional Bose-Hubbard…
In this paper we study the relation between long cycles and Bose-Condensation in the Infinite range Bose-Hubbard Model with a hard core interaction. We calculate the density of particles on long cycles in the thermodynamic limit and find that the existence of a non-zero long cycle density coincides with the occurrence of Bose-Einstein condensation but this density is not equal to that of the Bose condensate.
The hardcore-Bose-Hubbard model with random chemical potential is investigated using quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We consider two cases of random distribution of the chemical potential: a uniformly random distribution and a correlated distribution. The temperature dependences of the superfluid density, the specific heat, and the correlation functions are calculated. If the distribution of the randomness is correlated, there exists an intermediate state, which can be thought of as a localized condensate state of bosons, between the superfluid state and the normal state.
In a recent paper Roux [Phys. Rev. A 79, 021608(R) (2009), arXiv:0810.3720] argued that thermalization in a Bose-Hubbard system, after a quench, follows from the approximate Boltzmann distribution of the overlap between the initial state and the eigenstates of the final Hamiltonian. We show here that the distribution of the overlaps is in general not related to the canonical (or microcanonical) distribution and, hence, it cannot explain why thermalization occurs in quantum systems.
In this paper, we study Bose-Hubbard models on the square and honeycomb lattices with complex hopping amplitudes, which are feasible by recent experiments of cold atomic gases in optical lattices. To clarify phase diagrams, we use an extended quantum Monte-Carlo simulations (eQMC). For the system on the square lattice, the complex hopping is realized by an artificial magnetic field. We found that vortex-solid states form for certain set of magnetic field, i.e., the magnetic field with the flux quanta per plaquette $f=p/q$, where $p$ and $q$ are co-prime natural numbers. For the system on the h…
We propose universal SSE method for simulation of Heisenberg model with arbitrary spin and Bose Hubbard model with interaction. We report on the first calculations of soft-core bosons with interaction by the SSE method. Moreover we develop a simple procedure for increase efficiency of the algorithm. From calculation of integrated autocorrelation times we conclude that the method is efficient for both models and essentially eliminates the critical slowing down problem.
The quantum phase transition point between the insulator and the superfluid phase at unit filling factor of the infinite one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model is numerically computed with a high accuracy, better than current state of the art calculations. The method uses the infinite system version of the time evolving block decimation algorithm, here tested in a challenging case.
We study the phase transition from Mott insulator (MI) to Bose glass (BG) of a disordered Bose-Hubbard model within the framework of Ginzburg-Landau effective action approach. By treating MI as unperturbed ground state and performing a systematic expansion with respect to tunneling matrix element, we extend such a field-theoretic method into the disordered lattice Bose systems. To the lowest order, a second order phase transition is confirmed to happen here and the corresponding phase boundary equation coincides with the previous mean-field approximation result. Keeping all the terms second or…
Motivated by recent experiments, we study the relaxation dynamics and thermalization in the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model induced by a global interaction quench. Specifically, we start from an initial state that has exactly one boson per site and is the ground state of a system with infinitely strong repulsive interactions at unit filling. Using exact diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group method, we compute the time dependence of such observables as the multiple occupancy and the momentum distribution function. Typically, the relaxation to stationary values occurs o…
We study the off-equilibrium dynamics of the infinite dimensional Bose Hubbard Model after a quantum quench. The dynamics can be analyzed exactly by mapping it to an effective Newtonian evolution. For integer filling, we find a dynamical transition separating regimes of small and large quantum quenches starting from the superfluid state. This transition is very similar to the one found for the fermionic Hubbard model by mean field approximations.
Phase transitions are investigated in the Bose-Fermi-Hubbard model in the mean field and hard-core boson approximations for the case of infinitely small fermion transfer and repulsive on-site boson-fermion interaction. The behavior of the Bose-Einstein condensate order parameter and grand canonical potential is analyzed as functions of the chemical potential of bosons at zero temperature. The possibility of change of order of the phase transition to the superfluid phase in the regime of fixed values of the chemical potentials of Bose- and Fermi-particles is established. The relevant phase diag…
We construct a basis for the many-particle ground states of the positive hopping Bose-Hubbard model on line graphs of finite 2-connected planar bipartite graphs at sufficiently low filling factors. The particles in these states are localized on non-intersecting vertex-disjoint cycles of the line graph which correspond to non-intersecting edge-disjoint cycles of the original graph. The construction works up to a critical filling factor at which the cycles are close-packed.
We develop a scheme for analytic continuation of the strong-coupling perturbation series of the pure Bose-Hubbard model beyond the Mott insulator-to-superfluid transition at zero temperature, based on hypergeometric functions and their generalizations. We then apply this scheme for computing the critical exponent of the order parameter of this quantum phase transition for the two-dimensional case, which falls into the universality class of the three-dimensional $XY$ model. This leads to anontrivial test of the universality hypothesis.
We use Abelian Bosonization and density matrix renormalization group method to study the effect of density on quantum phases of long range 1-D Bose-Hubbard model. We predict the existence of supersolid phase and also other quantum phases for this system. We have analyzed the role of long range interaction parameter on solitonic phase near half filling. We discuss the effect of dimerization in nearest neighbor hopping and interaction terms on the plateau phase at the half filling.
We study ultracold Bose gases in periodic potentials as described by the Bose-Hubbard model. In 1D and at finite temperature, we simulate ultracold Bose gases in imaginary time with the gauge $P$ representation. We study various quantities including the Luttinger parameter $K$, which is important for locating the boundaries of the Mott insulator lobes, and find a simple relation for the kinetic energy part of the Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian. We show that for J=0, the stepwise pattern of the average number of particles per lattice site versus the chemical potential vanishes at temperatures above $…
We prove basic theorems about the ground states of the S=1 Bose-Hubbard model. The results are quite universal and depend only on the coefficient U_2 of the spin-dependent interaction. We show that the ground state exhibits saturated ferromagnetism if U_2<0, is spin-singlet if U_2>0, and exhibits "SU(3)-ferromagnetism" if U_2=0, and completely determine the degeneracy in each region.
In the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with on-site and nearest neighbor interactions, a gapped phase characterized by an exotic non-local order parameter emerges, the Haldane insulator. Bose-Hubbard models with cavity-mediated global range interactions display phase diagrams, which are very similar to those with nearest neighbor repulsive interactions, but the Haldane phase remains elusive there. Here we study the one-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and cavity-mediated global-range interactions and scrutinize the existence of a Haldane Insulator phase. With the help of…
The zero-temperature phase diagram for ultracold Bosons in a random 1D potential is obtained through a site-decoupling mean-field scheme performed over a Bose-Hubbard (BH) Hamiltonian whose hopping term is considered as a random variable. As for the model with random on-site potential, the presence of disorder leads to the appearance of a Bose-glass phase. The different phases -i.e. Mott insulator, superfluid, Bose-glass- are characterized in terms of condensate fraction and superfluid fraction. Furthermore, the boundary of the Mott lobes are related to an off-diagonal Anderson model featuring…
In this paper we study the relation between long cycles and Bose-Einstein condensation in the Infinite-Range Bose-Hubbard Model. We obtain an expression for the cycle density involving the partition function for a Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian with a single-site correction. Inspired by the Approximating Hamiltonian method we conjecture a simplified expression for the short cycle density as a ratio of single-site partition functions. In the absence of condensation we prove that this simplification is exact and use it to show that in this case the long-cycle density vanishes. In the presence of conde…
In this paper we report results from a systematic strong-coupling expansion of the Bose-Hubbard model in one and two spatial dimensions. We obtain numerically exact results for the structure factor and the spectrum of single particle and single hole excitations in the Mott insulator. This enables the determination of the zero-temperature phase diagram and the location of the critical endpoints of the Mott lobes. In one dimension we confirm the occurrence of reentrance behavior from the compressible to the insulating phase in a region close to the critical point.
We study the quantum phase transitions in a two component bose-mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The calculations have been performed in the framework of the extended Bose-Hubbard model using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method. We obtain different phase transitions for the system for integer filling. When the inter-species on-site and the nearest neighbor interactions are larger than the intra-species on-site and also the nearest neighbor interactions, the system exhibits a phase separated charge density wave (PSCDW) order that is characterized by the two s…
We investigate the disorder effect on coherent fraction and the quantum phase transition of ultracold dilute Bose gases trapped in disordered optical lattices. Within the framework of Bogoliubov theory, an analytical expression for the particle density is derived and the dependence of coherent fraction on disorder strength as well as on lattice depth is discussed. In weak disorder regime, we find a decreased sensitivity of coherent fraction to disorder with the increase of on-site interaction strength. For strong disorder, the quantum phase boundary between superfluid phase and Bose glass phas…
