We study the quantum phase transitions in a two component bose-mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice. The calculations have been performed in the framework of the extended Bose-Hubbard model using the finite size density matrix renormalization group method. We obtain different phase transitions for the system for integer filling. When the inter-species on-site and the nearest neighbor interactions are larger than the intra-species on-site and also the nearest neighbor interactions, the system exhibits a phase separated charge density wave (PSCDW) order that is characterized by the two species being spatially separated and existing in the density wave phases.
A model of two-species bosons moving on the sites of a lattice is studied at nonzero temperature, focusing on magnetic order and superfluid-insulator transitions. Firstly, Landau theory is used to find the general structure of the phase diagram, and in particular to demonstrate the presence of first-order transitions and hysteresis in the vicinity of a multicritical point. Secondly, an explicit thermodynamic phase diagram is calculated using an approach based on a field-theoretical description of the Bose-Hubbard model, which incorporates the crucial effects of particle-number fluctuations. Th…
We study the ground state quantum phase diagram for a two species Bose mixture in a one-dimensional optical lattice using the finite size density matrix renormalization group(FSDMRG) method. We discuss our results for different combinations of inter and intra species interaction strengths with commensurate and incommensurate fillings of the bosons. The phases we have obtained are superfluid, Mott insulator and a novel phase separation, where different species reside in spatially separate regions. The spatially separated phase is further classified into phase separated superfluid(PS-SF) and Mot…
We introduce and study two classes of Hubbard models with magnetic flux or with spin-orbit coupling, which have a flat lowest band separated from other bands by a nonzero gap. We study the Chern number of the flat bands, and find that it is zero for the first class but can be nontrivial in the second. We also prove that the introduction of on-site Coulomb repulsion leads to ferromagnetism in both the classes.
We theoretically predict and experimentally demonstrate that several different particle species can be separated from each other by means of a ratchet device, consisting of periodically arranged triangular (ratchet) shaped obstacles. We propose an explicit algorithm for suitably tailoring the externally applied, time-dependent voltage protocol so that one or several, arbitrarily selected particle species are forced to migrate oppositely to all the remaining species. As an example we present numerical simulations for a mixture of five species, labelled according to their increasing size, so tha…
We examine the long-time behaviour of A+B \to 0 reaction-diffusion systems with initially separated species A and B. All of our analysis is carried out for arbitrary (positive) values of the diffusion constant D_A of particles A and initial concentrations a_0 and b_0 of A's and B's. We derive general formulae for the location of the reaction zone centre, the total reaction rate, and the concentration profile of species A outside the reaction zone. The general properties of the reaction zone are studied with a help of the scaling ansatz. Using the mean-field approximation we find the functional…
In our earlier work [M. Hafez, {\em et al.}, Phys. Lett. A {\bf 373} (2009) 4479] we employed the flow equation method to obtain a classic effective model from a quantum mechanical parent Hamiltonian called, the ionic Hubbard model (IHM). The classical ionic Hubbard model (CIHM) obtained in this way contains solely Fermionic occupation numbers of two species corresponding to particles with $\up$ and $\down$ spin, respectively. In this paper, we employ the transfer matrix method to analytically solve the CIHM at finite temperature in one dimension. In the limit of zero temperature, we find two …
The late-time dynamics of quantum many-body systems is organized in distinct dynamical universality classes, characterized by their conservation laws and thus by their emergent hydrodynamic transport. Here, we study transport in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with different masses of the two fermionic species. To this end, we develop a quantum Boltzmann approach valid in the limit of weak interactions. We explore the crossover from ballistic to diffusive transport, whose timescale strongly depends on the mass ratio of the two species. For timescales accessible with matrix product operators,…
We study the Metal-Insulator transition in one-dimensional Hubbard superlattices (SL's), modelled by a repeated pattern of repulsive (i.e., positive on-site coupling) and free sites. The evolution of the local moment and of the charge gap (calculated from Lanczos diagonalization of chains up to 18 sites), together with a strong coupling analysis, show that the electron density at which the system is insulating increases with the size of the free layer, relative to the repulsive one. In the insulating state, the mechanism of interaction between fermions separated by a free layer is the analog o…
We consider a realization of the two-species bosonic Hubbard model with variable interspecies interaction and hopping strength. We analyze the superfluid-insulator (SI) transition for the relevant parameter regimes and compute the ground state phase diagram for odd filling at commensurate densities. We find that in contrast to the even commensurate filling case, the superfluid-insulator transition occurs with (a) simultaneous onset of superfluidity of both species or (b) coexistence of Mott insulating state of one species and superfluidity of the other or, in the case of unit filling, (c) comp…
We investigate the phase diagram of a two-species Bose-Hubbard model including a conversion term, by which two particles from the first species can be converted into one particle of the second species, and vice-versa. The model can be related to ultra-cold atom experiments in which a Feshbach resonance produces long-lived bound states viewed as diatomic molecules. The model is solved exactly by means of Quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We show than an "inversion of population" occurs, depending on the parameters, where the second species becomes more numerous than the first species. The model …
A one dimensional stochastic exclusion process with two species of particles, $+$ and $-$, is studied where density of each species can fluctuate but the total particle density is conserved. From the exact stationary state weights we show that, in the limiting case where density of negative particles vanishes, the system undergoes a phase separation transition where a macroscopic domain of vacancies form in front of a single surviving negative particle. We also show that the phase separated state is associated with a diverging correlation length for any density and the critical exponents chara…
Using numerical simulations, we examine the dynamics of driven two-dimensional bidisperse disks flowing over quenched disorder. The system exhibits a series of distinct dynamical phases as a function of applied driving force and packing fraction including a phase separated state as well as a smectic state with liquid like or polycrystalline features. At low driving forces, we find a clogged phase with an isotropic density distribution, while at intermediate driving forces the disks separate into bands of high and low density with either liquid like or polycrystalline structure in the high dens…
Using simulations we examine a two-dimensional disk system in which two disk species are driven in opposite directions. We measure the average velocity of one of the species versus the applied driving force and identify four phases as function of drive and disk density: a jammed state, a completely phase separated state, a continuously mixing phase, and a laning phase. The transitions between these phases are correlated with jumps in the velocity-force curves that are similar to the behavior observed at dynamical phase transitions in driven particle systems with quenched disorder such as vorti…
We study reaction-diffusion processes with concentration-dependent diffusivity. First, we determine the decay of the concentration in the single-species and two-species diffusion-controlled annihilation processes. We then consider two natural inhomogeneous realizations. The two-species annihilation process is investigated in the situation when the reactants are initially separated, namely each species occupies a half space. In particular, we determine the growth law of the width of the reaction zone. The single-species annihilation process is studied in the situation when the spatially localiz…
The ground state phase diagram of the one-dimensional Bose-Fermi Hubbard model is studied in the canonical ensemble using a quantum Monte Carlo method. We focus on the case where both species have half filling in order to maximize the pairing correlations between the bosons and the fermions. In case of equal hopping we distinguish between phase separation, a Luttinger liquid phase and a phase characterized by strong singlet pairing between the species. True long-range density waves exist with unequal hopping amplitudes.
We study the charge conductivity of the one-dimensional repulsive Hubbard model at finite temperature using the method of dynamical quantum typicality, focusing at half filling. This numerical approach allows us to obtain current autocorrelation functions from systems with as many as 18 sites, way beyond the range of standard exact diagonalization. Our data clearly suggest that the charge Drude weight vanishes with a power law as a function of system size. The low-frequency dependence of the conductivity is consistent with a finite dc value and thus with diffusion, despite large finite-size ef…
We numerically solve the Hubbard model on the Bethe lattice with finite coordination number $z=3$, and determine its zero-temperature phase diagram. For this purpose, we introduce and develop the `variational uniform tree state' (VUTS) algorithm, a tensor network algorithm which generalizes the variational uniform matrix product state algorithm to tree tensor networks. Our results reveal an antiferromagnetic insulating phase and a paramagnetic metallic phase, separated by a first-order doping-driven metal-insulator transition. We show that the metallic state is a Fermi liquid with coherent qua…
