Given a singular Schubert variety Z in a compact Hermitian symmetric space it is a longstanding question to determine when Z is homologous to a smooth variety Y. We identify those Schubert varieties for which there exist first-order obstructions to the existence of Y. This extends (independent) work of M. Walters, R. Bryant and J. Hong.
Key tools include: (i) a new characterization of Schubert varieties that generalizes the well known description of the smooth Schubert varieties by connected sub-diagrams of a Dynkin diagram; and (ii) an algebraic Laplacian (a la Kostant), which is used to analyze the Lie algebra cohomology group associated to the problem.
We classify smooth Schubert varieties S_0 in a rational homogeneous manifold S associated to a short root, and show that they are rigid in the sense that any subvariety of S having the same homology class as S_0 is induced by the action of Aut_0(S), unless S_0 is linear.
Schubert varieties are irreducible subvarieties of homogeneous manifold, which are important to understand the geometry of homogeneous manifold G/P and the action of the semisimple Lie group G. Consider the space of effective cycles in G/P with homology class equal to an integral multiple of the homology class of a Schubert variety X_w of type w. We will show that for a smooth Schubert variety X_w in Hermitian symmetric space with trivial exceptions, this cycle space is simple: any irreducible subvariety X with homology class [X]=r[X_w] is again a Schubert variety of type w.
Let X=G/P be a homogeneous space of a complex semisimple Lie group G equipped with a hermitian metric. We study the action of the Hodge star operator on the space of harmonic differential forms on X. We obtain explicit combinatorial formulas for this action when X is an irreducible hermitian symmetric space of compact type.
Let X=G/P be cominuscule rational homogeneous variety. (Equivalently, X admits the structure of a compact Hermitian symmetric space.) We say a Schubert class [S] is Schur rigid if the only irreducible subvarieties Y of X with homology class [Y] = r [S], for an integer r, are Schubert varieties. Robles and The identified a sufficient condition for a Schubert class to be Schur rigid. In this paper we show that the condition is also necessary.
The grassmannian of hermitian lagrangian spaces in $\mathbb{C}^n\oplus \mathbb{C}^n$ is a natural compactification of the space of hermitian $n\times n$ matrices. We describe a Schubert-like, Whitney regular stratification on this space which has a Morse theoretic origin. We prove that these strata define closed subanalytic currents à la R. Hardt, generating the integral homology of this space, we investigate their intersection theoretic properties, and we prove certain odd (in K-theoretic sense) Thom-Porteous type theorems.
Let a=(p_1^{q_1}, ..., p_r^{q_r}) be a partition and a'=({p_1'}^{q_1'}, >..., {p_r'}^{q_r'}) be its conjugate. We will prove that if q_i, q_i > 1 for all i, then any irreducible subvariety X of Gr(m,n) whose homology class is an integral multiple of the Schubert class [σ_a] of type a is a Schubert variety of type a.
I use local differential geometric techniques to prove that the algebraic cycles in certain extremal homology classes in Hermitian symmetric spaces are either rigid (i.e., deformable only by ambient motions) or quasi-rigid (roughly speaking, foliated by rigid subvarieties in a nontrivial way). These rigidity results have a number of applications: First, they prove that many subvarieties in Grassmannians and other Hermitian symmetric spaces cannot be smoothed (i.e., are not homologous to a smooth subvariety). Second, they provide characterizations of holomorphic bundles over compact Kahler mani…
I show that any complex manifold that resembles a rank two compact Hermitian symmetric space (other than a quadric hypersurface) to order two at a general point must be an open subset of such a space.
We show that an almost Hermitian manifold $(M,g)$ of real dimension $4n$ which is strongly asymptotic to $\mathbb{C}H^{2n}$ and satisfies a certain scalar curvature bound must be isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. Assuming Kähler instead of almost Hermitian this gives the already known rigidity result by H. Boualem and M. Herlich proved in \emph{Ann. Scuola Norm. Sup Pisa (Ser. V)}, vol. 1(2).
This paper generalizes a rigidity result of complex hyperbolic spaces by M. Herzlich. We prove that an almost Hermitian spin manifold $(M,g)$ of real dimension $4n+2$ which is strongly asymptotic to $\hyp{\C}^{2n+1}$ and satisfies a certain scalar curvature bound must be isometric to the complex hyperbolic space. The fact that we do not assume $g$ to be Kähler reflects in the inequality for the scalar curvature.
We study deformations of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces $S$ of the compact type, known to be locally rigid, as projective-algberaic manifolds and prove that no jump of complex structures can occur. For each $S$ of rank $\ge 2$ there is an associated reductive linear group $G$ such that $S$ admits a holomorphic $G$-structure, corresponding to a reduction of the structure group of the tangent bundle. $S$ is characterized as the unique simply-connected compact complex manifold admitting such a $G$-structure which is at the same time integrable. To prove the deformation rigidity of $S$ it …
In this paper, we study the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation on compact Kähler manifold with non-negative orthogonal bisectional curvature. We prove that the curvatures of deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills metrics are parallel with respect to the background metric if there exists a positive constant $C$ such that $-\frac{1}{C}ω<\sqrt{-1}F<Cω$. We also study the self-shrinker over $\mathbb{C}^n$ to the corresponding parabolic flow. We prove that the self-shrinker over $\mathbb{C}^n$ is a quadratic polynomial function. We also show the similar rigid theorem for the J-equations and the self-shr…
Let $M$ be a pseudo-Hermitian homogeneous space of finite volume. We show that $M$ is compact and the identity component $G$ of the group of holomorphic isometries of $M$ is compact. If $M$ is simply connected, then even the full group of holomorphic isometries is compact. These results stem from a careful analysis of the Tits fibration of $M$, which is shown to have a torus as its fiber. The proof builds on foundational results on the automorphisms groups of compact almost pseudo-Hermitian homogeneous spaces. It is known that a compact homogeneous pseudo-Kähler manifold splits as a product of…
We study a pair (\mathcal{S}_0,\mathcal{S}) of irreducible Hermitian Symmetric Spaces of compact type (cHSS) in this paper, with the first aim being classifying all the admissible pairs (\mathcal{S}_0,\mathcal{S})). This notion is a natural generalization of the pairs of sub-diagram type originated by Jaehyun Hong and Ngaiming Mok ([HoM 10]). Based on this classification, we partially solve the rigidity problem for the admissible pairs (\mathcal{S}_0,\mathcal{S}) which was raised by Mok and Zhang (2014) ([MoZ 14]), culminating in determining a sufficient condition for the pairs being non-rigid…
In this paper, we establish the rigidity result for local holomorphic volume preserving maps from an irreducible Hermitian manifold of compact type into its Cartesian products.
In this paper, we study the existence of various harmonic maps from Hermitian manifolds to Kaehler, Hermitian and Riemannian manifolds respectively. By using refined Bochner formulas on Hermitian (possibly non-Kaehler) manifolds, we derive new rigidity results on Hermitian harmonic maps from compact Hermitian manifolds to Riemannian manifolds, and we also obtain the complex analyticity of pluri-harmonic maps from compact complex manifolds to compact Kaehler manifolds (and Riemannian manifolds) with non-degenerate curvatures, which are analogous to several fundamental results in [28,Siu], [14,J…
The present article studies the class of Einstein-Hermitian harmonic maps of constant Kaehler angle from the projective line into quadrics. We provide a description of their moduli spaces up to image, and gauge-equivalence using the language of vector bundles and representation theory. It is shown that the dimension of the moduli spaces is independent of the Einstein-Hermitian constant, and rigidity of the associated real standard, and totally real maps is examined. Finally, certain classical results concerning embeddings of two-dimensional spheres into spheres are rephrased and derived in our…
The moduli space NK of infinitesimal deformations of a nearly Kähler structure on a compact 6-dimensional manifold is described by a certain eigenspace of the Laplace operator acting on co-closed primitive (1,1) forms. Using the Hermitian Laplace operator and some representation theory, we compute the space NK on all 6-dimensional homogeneous nearly Kähler manifolds. It turns out that the nearly Kähler structure is rigid except for the flag manifold F(1,2)=SU_3/T^2, which carries an 8-dimensional moduli space of infinitesimal nearly Kähler deformations, modeled on the Lie algebra su_3 of the i…
The Hermitian symmetric space $M=\mathrm{EIII}$ appears in the classification of complete simply connected Riemannian manifolds carrying a parallel even Clifford structure. This means the existence of a real oriented Euclidean vector bundle $E$ over it together with an algebra bundle morphism $φ:\mathrm{Cl}^0(E) \rightarrow \mathrm{End}(TM)$ mapping $Λ^2 E$ into skew-symmetric endomorphisms, and the existence of a metric connection on $E$ compatible with $φ$. We give an explicit description of such a vector bundle $E$ as a sub-bundle of $\mathrm{End}(TM)$. From this we construct a canonical di…
In this article we discuss the geometry of moduli spaces of (1) flat bundles over special Lagrangian submanifolds and (2) deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills bundles over complex submanifolds in Calabi-Yau manifolds. These moduli spaces reflect the geometry of the Calabi-Yau itself like a mirror. Strominger, Yau and Zaslow conjecture that the mirror Calabi-Yau manifold is such a moduli space and they argue that the mirror symmetry duality is a Fourier-Mukai transformation. We review various aspects of the mirror symmetry conjecture and discuss a geometric approach in proving it. The existence of rig…
We study the canonical complexifications of non-compact Riemannian symmetric spaces G/K by the Grauert tube construction. We determine the maximal such complexification, a domain already constructed in another context by Akhiezer and Gindikin (Math. Ann., 1990), and show that this domain is Stein. We show there is an alternative for a G-invariant complexification: it is either "rigid" (its automorphism group is G), or it is a Hermmitian symmetric space. We also determine when invariant complexifications, especially the maximal one, are Hermitian symmetric. This is expressed simply in terms of …
Classification results for complex Riemannian foliations are obtained. For open subsets of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces of compact type, where one has explicit control over the curvature tensor, we completely classify such foliations by studying the infinitesimal model associated to the canonical connection. We also establish results for symmetric spaces of non-compact type and a general rigidity result for any irreducible Kähler manifold.
