A space curve is determined by conformal arc-length, conformal curvature, and conformal torsion, up to Möbius transformations. We use the spaces of osculating circles and spheres to give a conformally defined moving frame of a curve in the Minkowski space, which can naturally produce the conformal invariants and the normal form of the curve. We also give characterization of canal surfaces in terms of curves in the set of circles.
We present the general theory of curves in conformal geometry using tractor calculus. This primarily involves a tractorial determination of distinguished parametrizations and relative and absolute conformal invariants of generic curves. The absolute conformal invariants are defined via a tractor analogue of the classical Frenet frame construction and then expressed in terms of relative ones. This approach applies likewise to conformal structures of any signature; in the case of indefinite signature we focus especially on the null curves. It also provides a conceptual tool for handling distingu…
In this paper we give necessary and sufficient conditions for spacelike and timelike curves in a conformally flat, quasi conformally flat and conformally symmetric 4-dimensional \textit{LP}-Sasakian manifold to be proper biharmonic. Also, we investigate proper biharmonic curves in the Lorentzian sphere $S^{4}_{1}$.
We study the space of conformal immersions of a 2-torus into the 4-sphere. The moduli space of generalized Darboux transforms of such an immersed torus has the structure of a Riemann surface, the spectral curve. This Riemann surface arises as the zero locus of the determinant of a holomorphic family of Dirac type operators parameterized over the complexified dual torus. The kernel line bundle of this family over the spectral curve describes the generalized Darboux transforms of the conformally immersed torus. If the spectral curve has finite genus the kernel bundle can be extended to the compa…
In this paper we find approximate solutions of certain Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems for minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and null holomorphic curves in $\mathbb{C}^n$ for any $n\ge 3$. With this tool in hand we construct complete conformally immersed minimal surfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which are normalized by any given bordered Riemann surface and have Jordan boundaries. We also furnish complete conformal proper minimal immersions from any given bordered Riemann surface to any smoothly bounded, strictly convex domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$ which extend continuously up to the boundary; f…
Let $\mathbb{Q}_3$ be the complex 3-quadric endowed with its standard complex conformal structure. We study the complex conformal geometry of isotropic curves in $\mathbb{Q}_3$. By an isotropic curve we mean a nonconstant holomorphic map from a Riemann surface into $\mathbb{Q}_3$, null with respect to the conformal structure of $\mathbb{Q}_3$. The relations between isotropic curves and a number of relevant classes of surfaces in Riemannian and Lorentzian spaceforms are discussed.
We find the minimal value of the length in de Sitter space of closed space-like curves with non-vanishing non-space-like geodesic curvature vector. These curves are in correspondence with closed almost-regular canal surfaces, and their length is a natural magnitude in conformal geometry. As an application, we get a lower bound for the total conformal torsion of closed space curves.
We study the conformal geometry of timelike curves in the (1+2)-Einstein universe, the conformal compactification of Minkowski 3-space defined as the quotient of the null cone of $\mathbb{R}^{2,3}$ by the action by positive scalar multiplications. The purpose is to describe local and global conformal invariants of timelike curves and to address the question of existence and properties of closed trajectories for the conformal strain functional. Some relations between the conformal geometry of timelike curves and the geometry of knots and links in the 3-sphere are discussed.
We study the conformally invariant variational problem for time-like curves in the $n$-dimensional Einstein universe defined by the conformal strain functional. We prove that the stationary curves are trapped into an Einsetin universe of dimension $2$, $3$ or $4$. We study the linearly-full stationary curves in a four-dimensional Einstein universe and we show that they can be integrated by quadratures in terms of elliptic functions, elliptic integrals and Jacobi's theta functions.
We show that on conformal manifolds of even dimension $n\geq 4$ there is no conformally invariant natural differential operator between density bundles with leading part a power of the Laplacian $Δ^{k}$ for $k>n/2$. This shows that a large class of invariant operators on conformally flat manifolds do not generalise to arbitrarily curved manifolds and that the theorem of Graham, Jenne, Mason and Sparling, asserting the existence of curved version of $Δ^k$ for $1\le k\le n/2$, is sharp.
We give a complete classification of tangential bidifferential operators of total order at most $n$ which are expressed purely in terms of the Laplacian on the ambient space of an $n$-dimensional manifold. This gives a curved analogue of the classification, due to Ovsienko--Redou and Clerc, of conformally invariant bidifferential operators on the sphere. As an application, we construct a large class of formally self-adjoint conformally invariant differential operators.
By a conformal string in Euclidean space is meant a closed critical curve with non-constant conformal curvatures of the conformal arclength functional. We prove that (1) the set of conformal classes of conformal strings is in 1-1 correspondence with the rational points of the complex domain $\{q\in \mathbb{C} \,:\, 1/2 < \mathrm{Re}\, q < 1/\sqrt{2},\,\, \mathrm{Im}\, q > 0,\,\, |q| < 1/\sqrt{2}\}$ and (2) any conformal class has a model conformal string, called symmetrical configuration, which is determined by three phenomenological invariants: the order of its symmetry group and its linking …
Finding appropriate notions of discrete holomorphic maps and, more generally, conformal immersions of discrete Riemann surfaces into 3-space is an important problem of discrete differential geometry and computer visualization. We propose an approach to discrete conformality that is based on the concept of holomorphic line bundles over "discrete surfaces", by which we mean the vertex sets of triangulated surfaces with bi-colored set of faces. The resulting theory of discrete conformality is simultaneously Moebius invariant and based on linear equations. In the special case of maps into the 2-sp…
We treat the problem of defining, and characterising in a practical way, an appropriate class of distinguished curves for Poincaré-Einstein manifolds, and other conformally singular geometries. These "generalised geodesics" agree with geodesics away from the conformal singularity set and are shown to satisfy natural "boundary conditions" at points where they meet or cross the metric singularity set. We also characterise when they coincide with conformal circles. In the case of (Poincaré-)Einstein manifolds, we are able to provide a very general theory of first integrals for these distinguished…
We give a new characterisation of the unparametrised geodesics, or distinguished curves, for affine, pseudo-Riemannian, conformal, and projective geometry. This is a type of moving incidence relation. The characterisation is used to provide a very general theory and construction of quantities that are necessarily conserved along the curves. The formalism immediately yields explicit formulae for these curve first integrals. The usual role of Killing tensors and conformal Killing tensors is recovered as a special case, but the construction shows that a significantly larger class of equation solu…
All parabolic geometries, i.e. Cartan geometries with homogeneous model a real generalized flag manifold, admit highly interesting classes of distinguished curves. The geodesics of a projective class of connections on a manifold, conformal circles on conformal Riemannian manifolds, and Chern--Moser chains on CR--manifolds of hypersurface type are typical examples. We show that such distinguished curves are always determined by a finite jet in one point, and study the properties of such jets. We also discuss the question when distinguished curves agree up to reparametrization and discuss the di…
In this paper, we show that for every conformal minimal immersion $u:M\to \mathbb{R}^3$ from an open Riemann surface $M$ to $\mathbb{R}^3$ there exists a smooth isotopy $u_t:M\to\mathbb{R}^3$ $(t\in [0,1])$ of conformal minimal immersions, with $u_0=u$, such that $u_1$ is the real part of a holomorphic null curve $M\to \mathbb{C}^3$ (i.e. $u_1$ has vanishing flux). Furthermore, if $u$ is nonflat then $u_1$ can be chosen to have any prescribed flux and to be complete.
The set of osculating circles of a given curve in $\SS^3$ forms a curve in the set of oriented circles in $\SS^3$. We show that its "${\frac12}$-dimensional measure" with respect to the pseudo-Riemannian structure of the set of circles is proportional to the conformal arc-length of the original curve, which is a conformally invariant local quantity discovered in the first half of the last century.
Let $\mathcal{R}$ be an open Riemann surface. In this paper we prove that every continuous function $M \to \mathbb{R}^n$, $n\ge 3$, defined on a divergent Jordan arc $M \subset \mathcal{R}$ can be approximated in the Carleman sense by conformal minimal immersions; thus providing a new generalization of Carleman's theorem. In fact, we prove that this result remains true for null curves and many other classes of directed holomorphic immersions for which the directing variety satisfies a certain flexibility property. Furthermore, the constructed immersions may be chosen to be complete or proper u…
A conformal structure on a manifold $M^n$ induces natural second order conformally invariant operators, called Möbius and Laplace structures, acting on specific weight bundles of $M$, provided that $n\ge 3$. By extending the notions of Möbius and Laplace structures to the case of surfaces and curves, we develop here the theory of extrinsic conformal geometry for submanifolds, find tensorial invariants of a conformal embedding, and use these invariants to characterize various forms of geodesic submanifolds.
In this paper we survey some recent contributions by the authors to the theory of null holomorphic curves in the complex Euclidean space $\mathbb C^3$, as well as their applications to null holomorphic curves in the special linear group $SL_2(\mathbb C)$, minimal surfaces in the Euclidean space $\mathbb R^3$, and constant mean curvature one surfaces (Bryant surfaces) in the hyperbolic 3-space $\mathbb H^3$. The paper is an expanded version of the lecture given by the second named author at the Abel Symposium in Trondheim, Norway, in July 2013.
In this paper we consider two special classes of constrained Willmore tori in the 3-sphere. The first class is given by the rotation of closed elastic curves in the upper half plane - viewed as the hyperbolic plane - around the x-axis. The second is given as the preimage of closed constrained elastic curves, i.e., elastic curve with enclosed area constraint, in the round 2-sphere under the Hopf fibration. We show that all conformal types can be isometrically immersed into S^3 as constrained Willmore (Hopf) tori and write down all constrained elastic curves in H^2 and S^2 in terms of the Weiers…
Let $M$ be an open Riemann surface and $n\ge 3$ be an integer. We prove that on any closed discrete subset of $M$ one can prescribe the values of a conformal minimal immersion $M\to\mathbb{R}^n$. Our result also ensures jet-interpolation of given finite order, and hence, in particular, one may in addition prescribe the values of the generalized Gauss map. Furthermore, the interpolating immersions can be chosen to be complete, proper into $\mathbb{R}^n$ if the prescription of values is proper, and one-to-one if $n\ge 5$ and the prescription of values is one-to-one. We may also prescribe the flu…
The multiplier spectral curve of a conformal torus in the 4-sphere is essentially, see arXiv:0712.2311, given by all Darboux transforms of the conformal torus. In the particular case when the conformal immersion is a Hamiltonian stationary torus in Euclidean 4-space, the left normal of the immersion is harmonic, hence we can associate a second Riemann surface: the eigenline spectral curve of the left normal, as defined by Hitchin. We show that the multiplier spectral curve of a Hamiltonian stationary torus and the eigenline spectral curve of its left normal are biholomorphic Riemann surfaces o…
We present an elementary criterion to show the length-minimizing property of geodesics for a large class of conformal metrics. In particular, we prove the length-minimizing property of level curves of harmonic functions and the length-minimizing property of a family of the conic sections with the eccentricity $\varepsilon$ in the upper half plane endowed with the conformal metric $ \left( {\varepsilon}^{2} + \frac{1}{\;{y^2} \;} \right) \left(dx^{2} + dy^{2} \right)$.
We view conformal surfaces in the 4--sphere as quaternionic holomorphic curves in quaternionic projective space. By constructing enveloping and osculating curves, we obtain new holomorphic curves in quaternionic projective space and thus new conformal surfaces. Applying these constructions to Willmore surfaces, we show that the osculating and enveloping curves of Willmore spheres remain Willmore.
The Kastor-Traschen metric is a time-dependent solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations with positive cosmological constant $Λ$ which can be used to describe an arbitrary number of charged dynamical black holes. In this paper, we consider the null geodesic structure of this solution, in particular, focusing on the projection to the space of orbits of the timelike conformal retraction. It is found that these projected light rays arise as integral curves of a system of third order ordinary differential equations. This system is not uniquely defined, however, and we use the inherent freedom to …
