It is a well-known result of Eymard that the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra of a locally compact group $G$ can be identified with the dual of the group $\cs$ $C^{*}(G)$. A corresponding result for a locally compact groupoid $G$ has been investigated by Renault, Ramsay and Walter. We show that the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra $B_μ(G)$ of $G$ (with respect to a quasi-invariant measure $μ$ on the unit space $X$ of $G$) can be characterized in operator space terms as the dual of the Haagerup tensor product $\ov{L^{2}(X,μ)}^{r}\otimes_{hA}C^{*}(G,μ)\otimes_{h A}L^2(X,μ)^c$ and as the space of completely bounded bimodule maps $CB_{A}(C^{*}(G,μ),B(L^2(X,μ)))$, where $A=C_{0}(X)$ and $C^{*}(G,μ)$ is the groupoid $\cs$ obtained from those $G$-representations associated with $μ$. A similar but different result has been given by Renault, but our proof is along different lines, and full details are given. Examples illustrating the result are discussed.
We construct a large class of morphisms, which we call partial morphisms, of groupoids that induce $*$-morphisms of maximal and minimal groupoid $C^*$-algebras. We show that the association of a groupoid to its maximal (minimal) groupoid $C^*$-algebra and the association of a partial morphism to its induced morphism are functors (both of which extend the Gelfand functor). We show how to geometrically visualize lots of $*$-morphisms between groupoid $C^*$-algebras. As an application, we construct a groupoid models of the entire inductive systems of the Jiang-Su algebra $\mathcal{Z}$ and the Raz…
A fundamental feature of quantum groups is that many come in pairs of mutually dual objects, like finite-dimensional Hopf algebras and their duals, or quantisations of function algebras and of universal enveloping algebras of Poisson-Lie groups. The same phenomenon was studied for quantum groupoids in various settings. In the purely algebraic setup, the construction of a dual object was given by Schauenburg and by Kadison and Szlachányi, but required the quantum groupoid to be finite with respect to the base. A sophisticated duality for measured quantum groupoids was developed by Enock, Lesieu…
The theory of measured quantum groupoids, as defined by Lesieur and myself, was made to generalize the theory of quantum groups made by Kustarmans and Vaes, but was only defined in a von Neumann algebra setting; Th. Timmermann constructed locally compact quantum groupoids, which is a C*-version of quantum groupoids. Here, we associate to such a locally compact quantum groupoid a measured quantum groupoid in which it is weakly dense; we then associate to a measured quantum groupoid a locally compact quantum groupoid which is weakly dense in the measured quantum groupoid, but such a locally comp…
Given a self-similar groupoid action $(G,E)$ on the path space of a finite graph, we study the associated Exel-Pardo étale groupoid ${\mathcal G}(G,E)$ and its $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G,E)$. We review some facts about groupoid actions, skew products and semi-direct products and generalize a result of Renault about similarity of groupoids which resembles Takai duality. We also describe a general strategy to compute the $K$-theory of $C^*(G,E)$ and the homology of ${\mathcal G}(G,E)$ in certain cases and illustrate with an example.
This paper is devoted to the study of Poincaré duality in K-theory for general stratified pseudomanifolds. We review the axiomatic definition of a smooth stratification $\fS$ of a topological space $X$ and we define a groupoid $T^{\fS}X$, called the $\fS$-tangent space. This groupoid is made of different pieces encoding the tangent spaces of the strata, and these pieces are glued into the smooth noncommutative groupoid $T^{\fS}X$ using the familiar procedure introduced by A. Connes for the tangent groupoid of a manifold. The main result is that $C^{*}(T^{\fS}X)$ is Poincaré dual to $C(X)$, in …
We present a number of findings concerning groupoid dynamical systems and groupoid crossed products. The primary result is an identification of the spectrum of the groupoid crossed product when the groupoid has continuously varying abelian stabilizers and a well behaved orbit space. In this case, the spectrum of the crossed product is homeomorphic, via an induction map, to a quotient of the spectrum of the crossed product by the stabilizer group bundle. The main theorem is also generalized in the groupoid algebra case to an identification of the primitive ideal space. This generalization repla…
In this article, we generalize to the case of measured quantum groupoids on a finite basis some important results concerning actions of locally compact quantum groups on C*-algebras [S. Baaj, G. Skandalis and S. Vaes, 2003]. Let $\cal G$ be a measured quantum groupoid on a finite basis. We prove that if $\cal G$ is regular, then any weakly continuous action of $\cal G$ on a C*-algebra is necessarily strongly continuous. Following [S. Baaj and G. Skandalis, 1989], we introduce and investigate a notion of $\cal G$-equivariant Hilbert C$^*$-modules. By applying the previous results and a version …
We show that for a locally compact group G there is a one-to-one correspondence between G-invariant weak*-closed subspaces E of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) containing B_r(G) and quotients C*_E(G) of C*(G) which are intermediate between C*(G) and the reduced group algebra C*_r(G). We show that the canonical comultiplication on C*(G) descends to a coaction or a comultiplication on C*_E(G) if and only if E is an ideal or subalgebra, respectively. When αis an action of G on a C*-algebra B, we define "E-crossed products" B\rtimes_{α,E} G lying between the full crossed product and the reduced…
Let G be a locally compact group, and let A(G) and B(G) denote its Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras. These algebras are dual objects of the group and measure algebras, L^1(G) and M(G), in a sense which generalizes the Pontryagin duality theorem on abelian groups. We wish to consider the amenability properties of A(G) and B(G) and compare them to such properties for L^1(G) and M(G). For us, ``amenability properties'' refers to amenability, weak amenability, and biflatness, as well as some properties which are more suited to special settings, such as the hyper-Tauberian property for semisi…
Coactions of Hopf C*-bimodules simultaneously generalize coactions of Hopf C*-algebras and actions of groupoids. Following an approach of Baaj and Skandalis, we construct reduced crossed products and establish a duality for fine coactions. Examples of coactions arise from Fell bundles on groupoids and actions of a groupoid on bundles of C*-algebras. Continuous Fell bundles on an etale groupoid correspond to coactions of the reduced groupoid algebra, and actions of a groupoid on a continuous bundle of C*-algebras correspond to coactions of the function algebra.
We extend the classical Stone duality between zero dimensional compact Hausdorff spaces and Boolean algebras. Specifically, we simultaneously remove the zero dimensionality restriction and extend to étale groupoids, obtaining a duality with an elementary class of inverse semigroups.
We prove an equivariant localized and norm-controlled version of the Pimsner-Popa-Voiculescu theorem. As an application, we deduce a proof of the Paschke-Higson duality for transformation groupoids.
We present an operator-algebraic approach to the quantization and reduction of lattice field theories. Our approach uses groupoid C*-algebras to describe the observables and exploits Rieffel induction to implement the quantum gauge symmetries. We introduce direct systems of Hilbert spaces and direct systems of (observable) C*-algebras, and, dually, corresponding inverse systems of configuration spaces and (pair) groupoids. The continuum and thermodynamic limit of the theory can then be described by taking the corresponding limits, thereby keeping the duality between the Hilbert space and obser…
Let $A$ and $B$ be $C^*$-algebras with $A\subseteq M(B)$. Exploiting the duality between sober spaces and spatial locales, and the adjunction between restriction and induction for ideals in $A$ and $B$, we identify conditions that allow to define a quasi-orbit space and a quasi-orbit map for $A\subseteq M(B)$. These objects generalise classical notions for group actions. We characterise when the quasi-orbit space is an open quotient of the primitive ideal space of $A$ and when the quasi-orbit map is open and surjective. We apply these results to cross section $C^*$-algebras of Fell bundles ove…
If a locally compact group G acts on a C*-algebra B, we have both full and reduced crossed products, and each has a coaction of G. We investigate "exotic" coactions in between, that are determined by certain ideals E of the Fourier-Stieltjes algebra B(G) -- an approach that is inspired by recent work of Brown and Guentner on new C*-group algebra completions. We actually carry out the bulk of our investigation in the general context of coactions on a C*-algebra A. Buss and Echterhoff have shown that not every coaction comes from one of these ideals, but nevertheless the ideals do generate a wid…
** Draft Version ** To any boolean topos one can associate its category of internal Hilbert spaces, and if the topos is locally separated one can consider a full subcategory of square integrable Hilbert spaces. In both case it is a symmetric monoidal monotone complete $C^{*}$-category. We will prove that any boolean locally separated topos can be reconstructed as the classifying topos of "non-degenerate" monoidal normal $*$-representations of both its category of internal Hilbert spaces and its category of square integrable Hilbert spaces. This suggest a possible extension of the usual Gelfand…
We introduce C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and concrete Hopf C*-bimodules for the study of quantum groupoids in the setting of C*-algebras. These unitaries and Hopf C*-bimodules generalize multiplicative unitaries and Hopf C*-algebras and are analogues of the pseudo-multiplicative unitaries and Hopf--von Neumann-bimod-ules studied by Enock, Lesieur and Vallin. To each C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitary, we associate two Fourier algebras with a duality pairing, a C*-tensor category of representations, and in the regular case two reduced and two universal Hopf C*-bimodules. The theory is illu…
In this article, we generalize to the case of regular locally compact quantum groups, two important results concerning actions of compact quantum groups. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two monoidally equivalent regular locally compact quantum groups in the sense of De Commer. We introduce an induction procedure and we build an equivalence of the categories ${A}^{G_1}$ and ${A}^{G_2}$ consisting of continuous actions of $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $C^*$-algebras. As an application of this result, we derive a canonical equivalence of the categories ${KK}^{G_1}$ and ${KK}^{G_2}$. We introduce and investigate a no…
A Dirichlet operator algebra is a nonself-adjoint operator algebra $\mathcal{A}$ with the property that $\mathcal{A} + \mathcal{A}^*$ is norm-dense in the C$^*$-envelope of $\mathcal{A}.$ We show that, under certain restrictions, $\mathcal{A}$ has a family of completely contractive representations $\{π_i\}$ with the property that the invariant subspaces of $π_i(\mathcal{A})$ are totally ordered, and such that, for all $a \in \mathcal{A}, \ ||a|| = \sup_i ||π_i(a)||.$ The class of Dirichlet algebras includes strongly maximal triangular AF algebras, certain semicrossed product algebras, and gaug…
We prove that all K-homology classes of the stable (and unstable) Ruelle algebra of a Smale space have explicit Fredholm module representatives that are finitely summable on the same smooth subalgebra and with the same degree of summability. The smooth subalgebra is induced by a metric on the underlying Smale space groupoid and fine transversality relations between stable and unstable sets. The degree of summability is related to the fractal dimension of the Smale space. Further, the Fredholm modules are obtained by taking Kasparov products with a fundamental class of the Spanier-Whitehead K-d…
