In this article, part of the author's thesis, we propose a definition for measured quantum groupoid. The aim is the construction of objects with duality including both quantum groups and groupoids. We base ourselves on J. Kustermans and S. Vaes' works about locally compact quantum groups that we generalize thanks to formalism introduced by M. Enock and J.M. Vallin in the case of inclusion of von Neumann algebras. From a structure of Hopf-bimodule with left and right invariant operator-valued weights, we define a fundamental pseudo-multiplicative unitary. We introduce the notion of quasi-invariant weight on the basis and, then, we construct an antipode with polar decomposition, a coinvolution, a scaling group, a modulus and a scaling operator. This theory is illustrated with different examples. Duality of measured quantum groupoids will be discussed in a forthcoming article.
In a recent article of Kenny De Commer, was investigated a Morita equivalence between locally compact quantum groups, in which a measured quantum groupoid, of basis $\mathbb{C}^2$, was constructed as a linking object. Here, we generalize all these constructions and concepts to the level of measured quantum groupoids. As for locally compact quantum groups, we apply this construction to the deformation of a measured quantum groupoid by a 2-cocycle.
Mimicking the von Neumann version of Kustermans and Vaes' locally compact quantum groups, Franck Lesieur had introduced a notion of measured quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras. In this article, we suppose that the basis of the measured quantum groupoid is central; in that case, we prove that a specific sub-${\bf C}^*$ algebra is invariant under all the data of the measured quantum groupoid; moreover, this sub-${\bf C}^*$-algebra is a continuous field of ${\bf C}^*$-algebras; when the basis is central in both the measured quantum groupoid and its dual, we get that the meas…
Mimicking a recent article of Stefaan Vaes, in which was proved that every locally compact quantum group can act outerly, we prove that we get the same result for measured quantum groupoids, with an appropriate definition of outer actions of measured quantum groupoids. This result is used to show that every measured quantum groupoid can be found from some depth 2 inclusion of von Neumann algebras.
The theory of measured quantum groupoids, as defined by Lesieur and myself, was made to generalize the theory of quantum groups made by Kustarmans and Vaes, but was only defined in a von Neumann algebra setting; Th. Timmermann constructed locally compact quantum groupoids, which is a C*-version of quantum groupoids. Here, we associate to such a locally compact quantum groupoid a measured quantum groupoid in which it is weakly dense; we then associate to a measured quantum groupoid a locally compact quantum groupoid which is weakly dense in the measured quantum groupoid, but such a locally comp…
Mimicking the von Neumann version of Kustermans and Vaes' locally compact quantum groups, Franck Lesieur had introduced a notion of measured quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras. In a former article, the author had introduced the notion of actions, crossed-product, dual actions of a measured quantum groupoid: a biduality theorem for actions had been proved. This article continues that program : we prove the existence of a standard implementation for an action, and a bidulaity theorem for weights. We generalize this way results which were proved, for locally compact quantum …
Franck Lesieur had introduced in his thesis (now published in an expended and revised version in the {\it Mémoires de la SMF} (2007)) a notion of measured quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras and a simplification of Lesieur's axioms is presented in an appendix of this article. We here develop the notions of actions, crossed-product, and obtain a biduality theorem, following what had been done by Stefaan Vaes for locally compact quantum groups. Moreover, we prove that the inclusion of the initial algebra into its crossed-product is depth 2, which gives a converse of a result…
In his thesis ([L1]), which is published in an expended and revised version ([L2]), Franck Lesieur had introduced a notion of measured quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras, using intensively the notion of pseudo-multiplicative unitary, which had been introduced in a previous article of the author, in collaboration with Jean-Michel Vallin [EV]. In [L2], the axioms given are very complicated and are here simplified.
In this article, we give a definition for measured quantum groupoids. We want to get objects with duality extending both quantum groups and groupoids. To get a satisfying duality in the general case, we assume the existence of an antipod…
The classical Hausdorff-Young inequality for locally compact abelian groups states that, for $1\le p\le 2$, the $L^p$-norm of a function dominates the $L^q$-norm of its Fourier transform, where $1/p+1/q=1$. By using the theory of non-commutative $L^p$-spaces and by reinterpreting the Fourier transform, R. Kunze (1958) [resp. M. Terp (1980)] extended this inequality to unimodular [resp. non-unimodular] groups. The analysis of the $L^p$-spaces of the von Neumann algebra of a measured groupoid provides a further extension of the Hausdorff-Young inequality to measured groupoids.
Generalizing the notion of matched pair of groups, we define and study matched pairs of locally compact groupoids endowed with Haar systems, in order to give new examples of measured quantum groupoids.
In this article, we generalize to the case of measured quantum groupoids on a finite basis some important results concerning actions of locally compact quantum groups on C*-algebras [S. Baaj, G. Skandalis and S. Vaes, 2003]. Let $\cal G$ be a measured quantum groupoid on a finite basis. We prove that if $\cal G$ is regular, then any weakly continuous action of $\cal G$ on a C*-algebra is necessarily strongly continuous. Following [S. Baaj and G. Skandalis, 1989], we introduce and investigate a notion of $\cal G$-equivariant Hilbert C$^*$-modules. By applying the previous results and a version …
In this article, when G is a locally compact quantum group, we associate to a braided-commutative G-Yetter-Drinfel'd algebra $(N,a,\hat{a})$ equipped with a normal faithful semi-finite weight verifying some appropriate condition, a structure of a measured quantum groupoid. The dual structure is then given by $(N,\hat{a},a)$. Examples are given, especially the situation of a quotient type co-ideal of a compact quantum group. This construction generalizes the standard construction of a transformation groupoid. Most of the results were announced by the second author in 2011, at a conference in Wa…
In this paper, we give a different proof of the fact that the $C^{*}$ algebra of the odd dimensional quantum spheres is a groupoid $C*}$ algebra. We use the theory of inverse semigroups to reconstruct the groupoid given by Sheu in [6].
This is mainly an expository text on the Haagerup property for countable groupoids equipped with a quasi-invariant measure, aiming to complete an article of Jolissaint devoted to the study of this property for probability measure preserving countable equivalence relations. We show that our definition is equivalent to the one given by Ueda in terms of the associated inclusion of von Neumann algebras. It makes obvious the fact that treeability implies the Haagerup property for such groupoids. For the sake of completeness, we also describe, or recall, the connections with amenability and Kazhdan …
This is Part II in our multi-part series of papers developing the theory of a subclass of locally compact quantum groupoids ("quantum groupoids of separable type"), based on the purely algebraic notion of weak multiplier Hopf algebras. The definition was given in Part I. The existence of a certain canonical idempotent element $E$ plays a central role. In this Part II, we develop the main theory, discussing the structure of our quantum groupoids. We will construct from the defining axioms the right/left regular representations and the antipode map.
Dynamical quantum groups were introduced by Etingof and Varchenko in connection with the dynamical quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and measured quantum groupoids were introduced by Enock, Lesieur and Vallin in their study of inclusions of type II_1 factors. In this article, we associate to suitable dynamical quantum groups, which are a purely algebraic objects, Hopf C*-bimodules and measured quantum groupoids on the level of von Neumann algebras. Assuming invariant integrals on the dynamical quantum group, we first construct a fundamental unitary which yields Hopf bimodules on the level of C*-al…
In two articles ([L2], [L3]), Franck Lesieur had introduced a notion of quantum groupoid, in the setting of von Neumann algebras, using intensively the notion of pseudo-multiplicative unitary, which had been introduced in a previous article of the author, in collaboration with Jean-Michel Vallin [EV]. We are here studying the analog of Lesieur's construction in a C*-framework, when the basis of the quantum groupoid is central; in this case, the C* structure obtained can be described using the tools of continuous fields of C*-algebras. This allows us to re-use as quantum groupoids some examples…
The quantum Heisenberg manifolds are noncommutive manifolds constructed by M. Rieffel as strict deformation quantizations of Heisenberg manifolds and have been studied by various authors. Rieffel constructed the quantum Heisenberg manifolds as the generalized fixed-point algebras of certain crossed product $C^*$-algebras, and they also can be realized as crossed products of $C(\mathbb{T}^2)$ by Hilbert $C^*$-bimodules in the sense of Abadie et al. In this paper, we describe how the quantum Heisenberg manifolds can also be realized as twisted groupoid $C^*$-algebras.
In this series of papers, we develop the theory of a class of locally compact quantum groupoids, which is motivated by the purely algebraic notion of weak multiplier Hopf algebras. In this Part I, we provide motivation and formulate the definition in the C*-algebra framework. Existence of a certain canonical idempotent element is required and it plays a fundamental role, including the establishment of the coassociativity of the comultiplication. This class contains locally compact quantum groups as a subclass.
In this article, we generalize to the case of measured quantum groupoids on a finite basis some important results concerning equivariant Kasparov theory for actions of locally compact quantum groups [S. Baaj and G. Skandalis, 1989, 1993]. To every pair $(A,B)$ of C*-algebras continuously acted upon by a regular measured quantum groupoid on a finite basis $\cal G$, we associate a $\cal G$-equivariant Kasparov theory group ${\sf KK}_{\cal G}(A,B)$. The Kasparov product generalizes to this setting. By applying recent results concerning actions of regular measured quantum groupoids on a finite bas…
We propose a definition of compact quantum groupoids in the setting of C*-algebras, associate to such a quantum groupoid a regular C*-pseudo-multiplicative unitary, and use this unitary to construct a dual Hopf C*-bimodule and to pass to a measurable quantum groupoid in the sense of Enock and Lesieur. Moreover, we discuss examples related to compact and to étale groupoids and study principal compact C*-quantum groupoids.
We extend the Delorme-Guichardet characterization of Kazhdan property $T$ groups to $r$-discrete measured groupoids. We give several applications, in particular to stability results of Kazhdan property $T$ and to the study of cocycles taking values in a group having the Haagerup property.
We show that the C*-algebra of a quantum sphere $C(S_{q}^{2n+1})$ can be realized as a groupoid C*-algebra of a groupoid which is explicitly identified and is independent of the parameter $q$.
In this work we give a generalization of matched pairs of (finite) groups to describe a general class of depth two inclusions of factor von Neumann algebras and the C*-quantum groupoids associated with, using double groupoids.
We give a survey of the theory of finite quantum groupoids (weak Hopf algebras), including foundations of the theory and applications to finite depth subfactors, dynamical deformations of quantum groups, and invariants of knots and 3-manifolds.
In the setting of von Neumann algebras, measurable quantum groupoids have successfully been axiomatized and studied by Enock, Vallin, and Lesieur, whereas in the setting of $C^{*}$-algebras, a similar theory of locally compact quantum groupoids could not yet be developed. Some basic building blocks for such a theory, like analogues of a Hopf-von Neumann bimodule and of a pseudo-multiplicative unitary, were introduced in the thesis and a recent article by the author. That approach, however, is restricted to decomposable quantum groupoids which generalize $r$-discrete groupoids. Recently, we dev…
We establish a Galois correspondence for finite quantum groupoid actions on II_1 factors and show that every finite index and finite depth subfactor is an intermediate subalgebra of a quantum groupoid crossed product. Moreover, any such a subfactor is completely and canonically determined by a quantum groupoid and its coideal *-subalgebra. This allows to express the bimodule category of a subfactor in terms of the representation category of a corresponding quantum groupoid and the principal graph as the Bratteli diagram of an inclusion of certain C^*-algebras related to it.
We establish the equivalence of three versions of a finite dimensional quantum groupoid: a generalized Kac algebra introduced by T. Yamanouchi, a weak $C^*$-Hopf algebra introduced by G. Bohm, F. Nill and K. Szlachanyi (with an involutive antipode), and a Kac bimodule -- an algebraic version of a Hopf bimodule, the notion introduced by J.-M. Vallin. We also study the structure and construct examples of finite dimensional quantum groupoids.
Let N_0 \subset N_1 a depth 2, finite index inclusion of type II1 factors and N_0 \subset N_1 \subset N_2 \subset N_3 ... the corresponding Jones tower. D. Nikshych et L. Vainerman built dual structures of quantum C*-groupoid on the relative commutants N'_0 \cap N_2 et N'_1 \cap N_3. Here I define a new duality which allows a symetric construction without changing the involution. So the Temperley-Lieb algebras are selfdual quantum C*-groupoids and the quantum C*-groupoids associated to a finite depth finite index inclusion can be choosen selfdual. I show that every finite-dimensional connexe q…
A fundamental feature of quantum groups is that many come in pairs of mutually dual objects, like finite-dimensional Hopf algebras and their duals, or quantisations of function algebras and of universal enveloping algebras of Poisson-Lie groups. The same phenomenon was studied for quantum groupoids in various settings. In the purely algebraic setup, the construction of a dual object was given by Schauenburg and by Kadison and Szlachányi, but required the quantum groupoid to be finite with respect to the base. A sophisticated duality for measured quantum groupoids was developed by Enock, Lesieu…
It is well known that a measured groupoid G defines a von Neumann algebra W*(G), and that a Lie groupoid G canonically defines both a C*-algebra C*(G) and a Poisson manifold A*(G). We show that the maps G -> W*(G), G -> C*(G) and G -> A*(G) are functorial with respect to suitable categories. In these categories Morita equivalence is isomorphism of objects, so that these maps preserve Morita equivalence.
We present an operator-algebraic approach to the quantization and reduction of lattice field theories. Our approach uses groupoid C*-algebras to describe the observables and exploits Rieffel induction to implement the quantum gauge symmetries. We introduce direct systems of Hilbert spaces and direct systems of (observable) C*-algebras, and, dually, corresponding inverse systems of configuration spaces and (pair) groupoids. The continuum and thermodynamic limit of the theory can then be described by taking the corresponding limits, thereby keeping the duality between the Hilbert space and obser…
The Fourier-Stieltjes and Fourier algebras B(G), A(G) for a general locally compact group G, first studied by P. Eymard, have played an important role in harmonic analysis and in the study of operator algebras generated by G. Recently, there has been interest in developing versions of these algebras for locally compact groupoids, justification being that, just as in the group case, the algebras should play a useful role in the study of groupoid operator algebras. Versions of these algebras for the locally compact groupoid case appear in three related theories: (1) a measured groupoid theory (J…
In a former article, in collaboration with Jean-Michel Vallin, we have constructed two "quantum groupo\"ıds" dual to each other, from a depth 2 inclusion of von Neumann algebras $M_0\subset M_1$, in such a way that the canonical Jones'tower associated to the inclusion can be described as a tower of successive crossed-products by these two structures. We are now investigating in greater details these structures in the presence of an appropriate modular theory on the basis $M'_0\cap M_1$, and we show how these examples fit with Lesieur's "measured quantum groupo\"ıds".
We use a groupoid model for the spin algebra to introduce boundary conditions on quantum spin systems via a Poisson point process representation. We can describe KMS states of quantum systems by means of a set of equations resembling the standard DLR equations of classical statistical mechanics. We introduce a notion of quantum specification which recovers the classical DLR measures in the particular case of classical interactions. Our results are in the same direction as those obtained recently by Cha, Naaijkens, and Nachtergaele, differently somehow from the predicted by Fannes and Werner.
We construct a new class of finite-dimensional C^*-quantum groupoids at roots of unity q=e^{iπ/\ell}, with limit the discrete dual of the classical SU(N) for large orders. The representation category of our groupoid turns out to be tensor equivalent to the well known quotient C^*-category of the category of tilting modules of the non-semisimple quantum group U_q({\mathfrak sl}_N) of Drinfeld, Jimbo and Lusztig. As an algebra, the C^*-groupoid is a quotient of U_q({\mathfrak sl}_N). As a coalgebra, it naturally reflects the categorical quotient construction. In particular, it is not coassociati…
Taking a groupoid C*-algebra approach to the study of the quantum complex projective spaces $\mathbb{P}^{n}\left( \mathcal{T}\right) $ constructed from the multipullback quantum spheres introduced by Hajac and collaborators, we analyze the structure of the C*-algebra $C\left( \mathbb{P}^{1}\left( \mathcal{T}\right) \right) $ realized as a concrete groupoid C*-algebra, and find its $K$-groups. Furthermore after a complete classification of the unitary equivalence classes of projections or equivalently the isomorphism classes of finitely generated projective modules over the C*-algebra $C\left( …
In this article, we generalize to the case of regular locally compact quantum groups, two important results concerning actions of compact quantum groups. Let $G_1$ and $G_2$ be two monoidally equivalent regular locally compact quantum groups in the sense of De Commer. We introduce an induction procedure and we build an equivalence of the categories ${A}^{G_1}$ and ${A}^{G_2}$ consisting of continuous actions of $G_1$ and $G_2$ on $C^*$-algebras. As an application of this result, we derive a canonical equivalence of the categories ${KK}^{G_1}$ and ${KK}^{G_2}$. We introduce and investigate a no…
How does the spectrum of a Schrödinger operator vary if the corresponding geometry and dynamics change? Is it possible to define approximations of the spectrum of such operators by defining approximations of the underlying structures? In this work a positive answer is provided using the rather general setting of groupoid $C^\ast$-algebras. A characterization of the convergence of the spectra by the convergence of the underlying structures is proved. In order to do so, the concept of continuous field of groupoids is slightly extended by adding continuous fields of cocycles. With this at hand, m…
It is shown that there is a $C^*$-algebraic quantum group related to any double Lie group. An algebra underlying this quantum group is an algebra of a differential groupoid naturally associated with a double Lie group
