We present the initial results of an observational study into the variation of the dominant length-scale of quiet solar emission: supergranulation. This length-scale reflects the radiative energy in the plasma of the upper solar chromosphere and transition region at the magnetic network boundaries forming as a result of the relentless interaction of magnetic fields and convective motions of the Sun's interior. We demonstrate that a net difference of ~0.5Mm in the supergranular emission length-scale occurs when comparing observations cycle 22/23 and cycle 23/24 minima. This variation in scale is reproduced in the datasets of multiple space- and ground-based instruments and using different diagnostic measures. By means of extension, we consider the variation of the supergranular length-scale over multiple solar minima by analyzing a subset of the Mt Wilson Solar Observatory (MWO) Ca II K image record. The observations and analysis presented provide a tantalizing look at solar activity in the absence of large-scale flux emergence, offering insight into times of "extreme" solar minimum and general behavior such as the phasing and cross-dependence of different components of the spectral irradiance. Given that the modulation of the supergranular scale imprints itself in variations of the Sun's spectral irradiance, as well as in the mass and energy transport into the entire outer atmosphere, this preliminary investigation is an important step in understanding the impact of the quiet sun on the heliospheric system.
We study the complexity of the supergranular network through fractal dimension by using Ca II K digitized data archive obtained from Kodaikanal solar observatory. The data consists of 326 visually selected supergranular cells spread across the 23rd solar cycle. Only cells that were well-defined were chosen for the analysis and we discuss the potential selection effect thereof, mainly that it favors cells of a smaller size (< 20 Mm). Within this sample, we analyzed the fractal dimension of supergranules across the Solar cycle and find that it is anticorrelated with the activity level.
We introduce the concept of a Background-subtracted Solar Activity Map (BaSAM) as a new quantitative tool to assess and visualize the temporal variation of the photospheric magnetic field and the UV 160 nm intensity. The method utilizes data of the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) and is applicable to both full-disk observations and regions-of-interest. We illustrate and discuss the potential of BaSAM resorting to datasets representing solar minimum and maximum conditions: (1) Contributions of quiet-Sun magnetic fields, i.e. the network and (decaying) plage, to solar activity can be better det…
Explosive events are small transition region phenomena characterised by broad non-Gaussian wings in their line profiles. Images from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) give a first view of the plasma dynamics at the sites of explosive events seen in O VI spectra of a region of quiet Sun, taken with the ultraviolet spectrometer SUMER/SOHO. Distinct event bursts were seen either at the junction of supergranular network cells or near emerging flux. Three are described in the context of their surrounding transition region (304 A) and coronal (171 A) activity. One showed plasma ejected from one f…
We analyze spectral properties of solar convection in the range of depths from 0 to 19~Mm using subsurface flow maps obtained by the time-distance heiioseismology analysis of solar-oscillation data from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from May 2010 to September 2020. The results reveal a rapid increase of the horizontal flow scales with the depth, from supergranulation to giant-cell scales, and support the evidence of large-scale convection, previously detected by tracking the motion of supergranular cells on the surface. The total power of c…
As the global magnetic field of the Sun has an activity cycle, one expects to observe some variation of the dynamical properties of the flows visible in the photosphere. We investigate the flow field during the solar cycle by analysing SDO/HMI observations of continuum intensity, Doppler velocity and longitudinal magnetic field. We first picked data at disk center during 6 years along the solar cycle with a 48-hour time step in order to study the overall evolution of the continuum intensity and magnetic field. Then we focused on thirty 6-hour sequences of quiet regions without any remnant of m…
We study the spot distribution on the surface of LQ~Hya during the observing seasons October 1998 -- November 2002. We look for persistent active longitudes, trends in the level of spot activity and compare to photometric data, specifically to the derived time epochs of the lightcurve minima. We apply the Doppler Imaging technique on photospheric spectral lines using an inversion code to retrieve images of the surface temperature. We present new temperature maps using multiple spectral lines for a total of 7 seasons. We calculate spot coverage fractions from each map, and as a result we find a…
We present results of a multi-wavelength study of episodic plasma injection into the corona of AR 10942. We exploit long-exposure images of the Hinode and Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) spacecraft to study the properties of faint, episodic, "blobs" of plasma that are propelled upward along coronal loops that are rooted in the AR plage. We find that the source location and characteristic velocities of these episodic upflow events match those expected from recent spectroscopic observations of faint coronal upflows that are associated with upper chromospheric activity, in the form…

Aims: We investigate the temporal evolution of magnetic flux emergence in the quiet Sun atmosphere close to disk center. Methods: We combine high-resolution SoHO/MDI magnetograms with TRACE observations taken in the 1216 Å channel in order to analyze the temporal evolution of an emerging small-scale magnetic loop and its traces in the chromosphere. Results: At first place, we find signatures of flux emergence very close to the edge of a supergranular network boundary located at disk center. The new emerging flux appears first in the MDI magnetograms in form of an asymmetric bipolar element, i.…
HD 179949 is an F8V star, orbited by a giant planet at ~8 R* every 3.092514 days. The system was reported to undergo episodes of stellar activity enhancement modulated by the orbital period, interpreted as caused by Star-Planet Interactions (SPIs). One possible cause of SPIs is the large-scale magnetic field of the host star in which the close-in giant planet orbits. In this paper we present spectropolarimetric observations of HD 179949 during two observing campaigns (2009 September and 2007 June). We detect a weak large-scale magnetic field of a few Gauss at the surface of the star. The field…
Taking into account results obtained from light-curve analysis and out-of-eclipse analyses, we discuss the nature of GSC 02038-00293 and also its magnetic activity behaviour. We obtained light curves of the system during observing seasons 2007, 2008 and 2011. We obtained its secondary minimum clearly in I-band observations in 2008 for the first time. Analysing this light curve, we found the physical parameters of the components. The light-curve analysis indicates that the possible mass ratio of the system is 0.35. We obtained the remaining V-band light curves, extracting the eclipses. We model…

We present a magnetic activity study of GJ 436 using spectroscopic data from HARPS, spanning over 14 years, and additional data from NARVAL, falling within the HARPS observations. We study the CaII H&K, HeID3, NaI doublet, H$α$ and CaII IRT triplets lines and explore linear correlations between them. Using the full HARPS dataset, we found indices H$α$ vs CaII H&K & H$α$ vs HeI to correlate positively. From the NARVAL dataset, covering one observing epoch, we found CaII IRT$_{3}$ vs CaII IRT$_{2}$ & CaII IRT$_{3}$ vs H$α$ index to correlate negatively. We investigate long and short-term periodi…
The sunspot position from Greenwich Photoheliographic Results (GPR), US Air Force Solar Optical Observing Network and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (USAF/NOAA), and Debrecen Photoheliographic Data (DPD) data bases in the period 1874 to 2016 were used to calculate yearly values of the solar differential-rotation parameters $A$ and $B$. The calculated differential-rotation parameters were compared with the solar-activity level. We found that the Sun rotates more differentially at the minimum than at the maximum of activity during the 1977 - 2016 epoch. An inverse correlation be…
Opportunity of the solar flares (SF's) prediction observing the solar neutrino fluxes is investigated. In three neutrino generations the evolution of the neutrino flux traveling the coupled sunspots (CS's) which are the SF source is considered. It is assumed that the neutrinos possess both the dipole magnetic moment and the anapole moment while the magnetic field above the CS's may reach the values $10^5-10^6$ Gs, displays the twisting nature and has the nonpotential character. The possible resonance conversions of the solar neutrino flux are examined. Since the $ν_{eL}\to ν_{μL}$ resonance ta…
We intensively studied the flare activity on the stellar object KIC011764567. The star was thought to be solar type, with a temperature of $T_{eff} = (5640 \pm 200)\,$K, $\log(g) = (4.3 \pm 0.3)\,$dex and a rotational period of Prot 22 d (Brown et al. 2011). High resolution spectra turn the target to an evolved object with Teff = (5300 \pm 150) K, a metalicity of $[m/H] = (-0.5 \pm 0.2)$, a surface gravity of $log(g) = (3.3 \pm 0.4)\,$dex, and a projected rotational velocity of $v sin i = (22 \pm 1)\,kms^{-1}$. Within an observing time span of 4 years we detected 150 flares in Kepler data in a…
The combined Greenwich and Solar Optical Observing Network (SOON) sunspot group data during 1874-2013 are analyzed and studied the relatively long-term variations in the annual sums of the areas of sunspot groups in 0-10 deg, 10-20 deg, and 20-30 deg latitude intervals of the Sun's northern and southern hemispheres. The variations in the corresponding north-south differences are also studied. Long periodicities in these parameters are determined from the fast Fourier transform (FFT), maximum entropy method (MEM), and Morlet wavelet analysis. It is found that in the difference between the sums …
Barnard's star is among the most studied stars given its proximity to the Sun. It is often considered $the$ Radial Velocity (RV) standard for fully convective stars due to its RV stability and equatorial declination. Recently, an $M \sin i = 3.3 M_{\oplus}$ super-Earth planet candidate with a 233 day orbital period was announced by Ribas et al. (2018). New observations from the near-infrared Habitable-zone Planet Finder (HPF) Doppler spectrometer do not show this planetary signal. We ran a suite of experiments on both the original data and a combined original + HPF data set. These experiments …
In light of the growing interest in searching for low mass, rocky planets, we investigate the impact of starspots on radial velocity searches for earth-mass planets in orbit about M dwarf stars. Since new surveys targeting M dwarfs will likely be carried out at infrared wavelengths, a comparison between V and Y band starspot induced jitter is made, indicating a reduction of up to an order of magnitude when observing in the Y band. The exact reduction in jitter is dependent on the photosphere to spot contrast ratio, with greater improvements at smaller contrasts. We extrapolate a model used to …
Understanding stellar activity in M dwarfs is fundamental to improving our knowledge of the physics of stellar atmospheres and for planet search programmes. High levels of stellar activity (also with flare events) can cause additional variations in the stellar emission that contaminate the signal induced by a planet and that need to be corrected. The study of activity indicators in active stars can improve our capability of modelling this signal. Our aim is to understand the behaviour of stellar chromospheres of M stars, studying the more sensitive chromospheric activity indicators, characteri…
The large-scale magnetic fields of stars can be obtained with the Zeeman-Doppler-Imaging (ZDI) technique, but their interpretation is still challenging as the contribution of the small-scale field or the reliability of the reconstructed field properties is still not fully understood. To quantify this, we use 3D non-potential magnetic field simulations for slowly rotating solar-like stars as inputs to test the capabilities of ZDI. These simulations are based on a flux transport model connected to a non-potential coronal evolution model using the observed solar flux emergence pattern. We first c…
Detailed knowledge of surface dynamics is one of the key points in understanding magnetic solar activity. The motions of the solar surface, to which we have direct access via the observations, tell us about the interaction between the emerging magnetic field and the turbulent fields. The flows computed with the coherent structure tracking (CST) technique on the whole surface of the Sun allow for the texture of the velocity modulus to be analyzed and for one to locate the largest horizontal flows and determine their organization. The velocity modulus maps show structures more or less circular a…
Although there are now some tentative signs that the start of cycle 24 has begun there is still considerable interest in the somewhat unusual behaviour of the current solar minimum and the apparent delay in the true start of the next cycle. While this behaviour is easily tracked by observing the change in surface activity a question can also be asked about what is happening beneath the surface where the magnetic activity ultimately originates? In order to try to answer this question we can look at the behaviour of the frequencies of the Sun's natural seismic modes of oscillation - the p modes.…
Group sunspot number (GSN) series constitute the longest instrumental astronomical database providing information on solar activity. It is a compilation of observations by many individual observers, and their inter-calibration has usually been performed using linear rescaling. There are multiple published series that show different long-term trends for solar activity. We aim at producing a GSN series, with a non-linear non-parametric calibration. The only underlying assumptions are that the differences between the various series are due to different acuity thresholds of the observers, and that…
In recent years it has been claimed that the length of stellar activity cycles is determined by the stellar rotation rate. It is observed that the cycle period increases with rotation period along the so-called active and inactive sequences. In this picture the Sun occupies a solitary position in between the two sequences. Our goal is to measure cyclic variations of the stellar light curve amplitude and the rotation period using four years of Kepler data. Periodic changes of the light curve amplitude or the stellar rotation period are associated with an underlying activity cycle. Using the McQ…
Observations and modelling of stars with near-solar masses in their early phases of evolution is critical for a better understanding of how dynamos of solar-type stars evolve. We examine the chemical composition and the spot distribution of the pre-main-sequence solar analogue EK Dra. Using spectra from the HERMES Spectrograph (La Palma), we obtain the abundances of 23 elements with respect to the solar ones, which lead to a $[{\rm Fe/H}]=0.03$, with significant overabundance of Li and Ba. The s-process elements Sr, Y, and Ce are marginally overabundant, while Co, Ni, Cu, Zn are marginally def…
A former member of the Hyades cluster, $ι$ Horologii ($ι$ Hor) is a planet-hosting Sun-like star which displays the shortest coronal activity cycle known to date ($P_{\rm cyc}\sim$ 1.6 yr). With an age of $\sim$$625$ Myr, $ι$ Hor is also the youngest star with a detected activity cycle. The study of its magnetic properties holds the potential to provide fundamental information to understand the origin of cyclic activity and stellar magnetism in late-type stars. In this series of articles, we present the results of a comprehensive project aimed at studying the evolving magnetic field in this st…
According to Gnevyshev-Ohl (G-O) rule an odd-numbered cycle is stronger than its preceding even-numbered cycle. In the modern time the cycle pair (22, 23) violated this rule. By using the combined Greenwich Photoheliographic Results (GPR) and Solar Optical Observing Network (SOON) sunspot group data during the period 1874-2015, and Debrecen Photoheliographic Data (DPD) of sunspot groups during the period 1974-2015, here we have found that the solar cycle pair (22, 23) violated the G-O rule because, besides during cycle 23 a large deficiency of small sunspot groups in both the northern and the …

Solar-analog stars provide an excellent opportunity to study the Sun's evolution, i.e. the changes with time in stellar structure, activity, or rotation for solar-like stars. The unparalleled photometric data from the NASA space telescope Kepler allows us to study and characterise solar-like stars through asteroseismology. We aim to spectroscopically investigate the fundamental parameter and chromospheric activity of solar analogues and twins, based on observations obtained with the HERMES spectrograph and combine them with asteroseismology. Therefore, we need to build a solar atlas for the sp…
The study of stellar activity cycles is crucial to understand the underlying dynamo and how it causes activity signatures such as dark spots and bright faculae. We study the appearance of activity signatures in contemporaneous photometric and chromospheric time series. Lomb-Scargle periodograms are used to search for cycle periods present in both time series. To emphasize the signature of the activity cycle we account for rotation-induced scatter in both data sets by fitting a quasi-periodic Gaussian process model to each observing season. After subtracting the rotational variability, cycle am…
Accurately modeling effects from stellar activity is a key step in detecting radial velocity signals of low-mass and long-period exoplanets. Radial velocities from stellar activity are dominated by magnetic active regions that move in and out of sight as the star rotates, producing signals with timescales related to the stellar rotation period. Methods to characterize radial velocity periodograms assume that peaks from magnetic active regions will typically occur at the stellar rotation period or a related harmonic. However, with surface features unevenly spaced and evolving over time, signals…
The rotation rates and magnetic activity of Sun-like and low-mass (< 1.4 Msun) main-sequence stars are known to decline with time, and there now exist several models for the evolution of rotation and activity. However, the role that chemical composition plays during stellar spin-down has not yet been explored. In this work, we use a structural evolution code to compute the rotational evolution of stars with three different masses (0.7, 1.0, and 1.3Msun and six different metallicities, ranging from [Fe/H]=-1.0 to [Fe/H]=+0.5. We also implement three different wind-braking formulations from the …
The Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA) radio telescope has commenced science observations of the Sun starting in late 2016. Since the Sun is much larger than the field of view of individual ALMA dishes, the ALMA interferometer is unable to measure the background level of solar emission when observing the solar disk. The absolute temperature scale is a critical measurement for much of ALMA solar science, including the understanding of energy transfer through the solar atmosphere, the properties of prominences, and the study of shock heating in the chromosphere. In order to prov…
Using a model based on the rotational modulation of the visibility of active regions, we analyse the high-accuracy CoRoT lightcurve of the active young star CoRoT102899501. Spectroscopic follow-up observations are used to derive its fundamental parameters. We compare its chromospheric activity level with a model of chrosmospheric activity evolution established by combining relationships between the R'HK index and the Rossby number with a recent model of stellar rotation evolution on the main sequence. We measure the spot coverage of the stellar surface as a function of time, and find evidence …
WD 1145+017 was observed from 2016 November through 2017 June for the purpose of further characterizing the transit behavior of the dusty debris clouds orbiting this white dwarf. The optical observations were carried out with a small ground-based telescope run by an amateur astronomer, and covered 53 different nights over the 8-month interval. We have found that the optical activity has increased to the highest level observed since its discovery with Kepler K2, with approximately 17% of the optical flux extinguished per orbit. The source exhibits some transits with depths of up to 55% and dura…
The Star-Planet Activity Research CubeSat (SPARCS) is a NASA-funded astrophysics mission, devoted to the study of the ultraviolet (UV) time-domain behavior in low-mass stars. Given their abundance and size, low-mass stars are important targets in the search for habitable-zone, exoplanets. However, not enough is known about the stars flare and quiescent emission, which powers photochemical reactions on the atmospheres of possible planets. Over its initial 1-year mission, SPARCS will stare at ~10 stars in order to measure short- (minutes) and long- (months) term variability simultaneously in the…
