We study the complexity of the supergranular network through fractal dimension by using Ca II K digitized data archive obtained from Kodaikanal solar observatory. The data consists of 326 visually selected supergranular cells spread across the 23rd solar cycle. Only cells that were well-defined were chosen for the analysis and we discuss the potential selection effect thereof, mainly that it favors cells of a smaller size (< 20 Mm). Within this sample, we analyzed the fractal dimension of supergranules across the Solar cycle and find that it is anticorrelated with the activity level.
Aims: The statistics of the photospheric granulation pattern are investigated using continuum images observed by Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO)/Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) taken at 6713~Å. Methods: The supergranular boundaries can be extracted by tracking photospheric velocity plasma flows. The local ball-tracking method is employed to apply on the HMI data gathered over the years 2011-2015 to estimate the boundaries of the cells. The edge sharpening techniques are exerted on the output of ball-tracking to precisely identify the cells borders. To study the fractal dimensionality (F…
We present the initial results of an observational study into the variation of the dominant length-scale of quiet solar emission: supergranulation. This length-scale reflects the radiative energy in the plasma of the upper solar chromosphere and transition region at the magnetic network boundaries forming as a result of the relentless interaction of magnetic fields and convective motions of the Sun's interior. We demonstrate that a net difference of ~0.5Mm in the supergranular emission length-scale occurs when comparing observations cycle 22/23 and cycle 23/24 minima. This variation in scale i…
The origin of the quiet Sun magnetism is under debate. Investigating the solar cycle variation observationally in more detail can give us clues about how to resolve the controversies. We investigate the solar cycle variation of the most magnetically quiet regions and their surface gravity oscillation ($f$-) mode integrated energy ($E_f$). We use 12 years of HMI data and apply a stringent selection criteria, based on spatial and temporal quietness, to avoid any influence of active regions (ARs). We develop an automated high-throughput pipeline to go through all available magnetogram data and to…
We analyze the long-term behavior of supergranule scale parameter, in active and quiet regions (AR, QR), using the Kodaikanal digitized data archive. This database provides century-long daily full disc observations of the Sun in Ca-II K wavelength. In this paper, we study the distributions of the supergranular scales, over the whole data duration, which show identical shape in these two regimes. We found that the AR mean scale values are always higher than that of the QR for every solar cycle. The mean scale values are highly correlated with the sunspot number cycle amplitude and also with tot…
As the global magnetic field of the Sun has an activity cycle, one expects to observe some variation of the dynamical properties of the flows visible in the photosphere. We investigate the flow field during the solar cycle by analysing SDO/HMI observations of continuum intensity, Doppler velocity and longitudinal magnetic field. We first picked data at disk center during 6 years along the solar cycle with a 48-hour time step in order to study the overall evolution of the continuum intensity and magnetic field. Then we focused on thirty 6-hour sequences of quiet regions without any remnant of m…
The morphologic properties of the magnetic networks during Carrington Rotations (CR) 1955 to 2091 (from 1999 to 2010) have been analyzed by applying the watershed algorithm to magnetograms observed by the Michelson Doppler Interferometer (MDI) on board the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft. We find that the average area of magnetic cells on the solar surface at lower latitudes (within +-50 degree) are smaller than those at higher latitudes (beyond +-50 degree). Statistical analysis of these data indicates that the magnetic networks are of fractal in nature, and the average f…
We discuss the potential use of an algebraic method to compute the value of the solar axial dipole moment at solar minimum, widely considered to be the most reliable precursor of the activity level in the next solar cycle. The method consists of summing up the ultimate contributions of individual active regions to the solar axial dipole moment \revtwo{at the end of the cycle}. A potential limitation of the approach is its dependence on the underlying surface flux transport (SFT) model details. We demonstrate by both analytical and numerical methods that the factor relating the initial and ulti…
We present and discuss the strong correspondence between evolution of the emission length scale in the lower transition region and in situ measurements of the fast solar wind composition during this most recent solar minimum. We combine recent analyses demonstrating the variance in the (supergranular) network emission length scale measured by SOHO (and STEREO) with that of the Helium abundance (from WIND) and the degree of Iron fractionation in the solar wind (from the ACE and Ulysses). The net picture developing is one where a decrease in the Helium abundance and the degree of Iron fractionat…
The multifractal nature of solar photospheric magnetic structures are studied using the 2D wavelet transform modulus maxima (WTMM) method. This relies on computing partition functions from the wavelet transform skeleton defined by the WTMM method. This skeleton provides an adaptive space-scale partition of the fractal distribution under study, from which one can extract the multifractal singularity spectrum. We describe the implementation of a multiscale image processing segmentation procedure based on the partitioning of the WT skeleton which allows the disentangling of the information concer…
We analyze spectral properties of solar convection in the range of depths from 0 to 19~Mm using subsurface flow maps obtained by the time-distance heiioseismology analysis of solar-oscillation data from the Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) from May 2010 to September 2020. The results reveal a rapid increase of the horizontal flow scales with the depth, from supergranulation to giant-cell scales, and support the evidence of large-scale convection, previously detected by tracking the motion of supergranular cells on the surface. The total power of c…
Within the Babcock-Leighton framework for the solar dynamo, the strength of a cycle is expected to depend on the strength of the dipole moment or net hemispheric flux during the preceding minimum, which depends on how much flux was present in each hemisphere at the start of the previous cycle and how much net magnetic flux was transported across the equator during the cycle. Some of this transport is associated with the random walk of magnetic flux tubes subject to granular and supergranular buffeting, some of it is due to the advection caused by systematic cross-equatorial flows such as those…
Accurate prediction of solar activity calls for precise calibration of solar cycle models. Consequently we aim to find optimal parameters for models which describe the physical processes on the solar surface, which in turn act as proxies for what occurs in the interior and provide source terms for coronal models. We use a genetic algorithm to optimize surface flux transport models using National Solar Observatory (NSO) magnetogram data for Solar Cycle 23. This is applied to both a 1D model that inserts new magnetic flux in the form of idealized bipolar magnetic regions, and also to a 2D model …

Texture is one of the most obvious characteristics in solar images and it is normally described by texture features. Because textures from solar images of the same wavelength are similar, we assume texture features of solar images are multi-fractals. Based on this assumption, we propose a pure data-based image restoration method: with several high resolution solar images as references, we use the Cycle-Consistent Adversarial Network to restore burred images of the same steady physical process, in the same wavelength obtained by the same telescope. We test our method with simulated and real obs…
Multiple recent investigations of solar magnetic field measurements have raised claims that the scale-free (fractal) or multiscale (multifractal) parameters inferred from the studied magnetograms may help assess the eruptive potential of solar active regions, or may even help predict major flaring activity stemming from these regions. We investigate these claims here, by testing three widely used scale-free and multiscale parameters, namely, the fractal dimension, the multifractal structure function and its inertial-range exponent, and the turbulent power spectrum and its power-law index, on a…
The century-long (1907-2007) Ca II K spectroheliograms from Kodaikanal Solar Observatory, India, has recently been digitised and calibrated. Applying a fully-automated algorithm (which includes contrast enhancement and 'Watershed method') on this data, we have identified the supergranules and calculated the associated parameters, such as scale, circularity, fractal dimension. We have segregated the quiet and active regions and obtained the supergranule parameters separately for these two domains. In this way, we have isolated the effect of large and small scale magnetic fields on such structur…
We analyzed the soft X-ray light curves from the {\sl Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES)} over the last 37 years (1975-2011) and measured with an automated flare detection algorithm over 300,000 solar flare events (amounting to $\approx 5$ times higher sensitivity than the NOAA flare catalog). We find a powerlaw slope of $α_F=1.98\pm0.11$ for the (background-subtracted) soft X-ray peak fluxes that is invariant through three solar cycles and agrees with the theoretical prediction $α_F=2.0$ of the {\sl fractal-diffusive self-organized criticality (FD-SOC)} model. For the s…
Characterizing the solar cycle variability using nonlinear time series analysis at different amounts of dynamo supercriticality: Solar dynamo is not highly supercritical
