We consider 6d N=(2,0) theory on N M5-branes, together with a 4d defect labeled by a Young diagram Y specifying its global symmetry G_Y. A recent conjecture states that a compactification of this system leads to a 2d theory with W-algebra symmetry depending on Y. We provide a check of the conjecture by reproducing the level of the current subalgebra \hat{G}_Y of this W-algebra from the property of the 4d defect.
A relative theory is a boundary condition of a higher-dimensional topological quantum field theory (TQFT), and carries a non-trivial defect group formed by mutually non-local defects living in the relative theory. Prime examples are 6d N=(2,0) theories that are boundary conditions of 7d TQFTs, with the defect group arising from surface defects. In this paper, we study codimension-two defects in 6d N=(2,0) theories, and find that the line defects living inside these codimension-two defects are mutually non-local and hence also form a defect group. Thus, codimension-two defects in a 6d N=(2,0) t…
Just as exactly marginal operators allow to deform a conformal field theory along the space of theories known as the conformal manifold, appropriate operators on conformal defects allow for deformations of the defects. When a defect breaks a global symmetry, there is a contact term in the conservation equation with an exactly marginal defect operator. The resulting defect conformal manifold is the symmetry breaking coset and its Zamolodchikov metric is expressed as the 2-point function of the exactly marginal operator. As the Riemann tensor on the conformal manifold can be expressed as an inte…
It was recently argued that quantum field theories possess one-form and higher-form symmetries, labelled `generalized global symmetries.' In this paper, we describe how those higher-form symmetries can be understood mathematically as special cases of more general 2-groups and higher groups, and discuss examples of quantum field theories admitting actions of more general higher groups than merely one-form and higher-form symmetries. We discuss analogues of topological defects for some of these higher symmetry groups, relating some of them to ordinary topological defects. We also discuss topolog…
We derive Cardy-like formulas for the growth of operators in different sectors of unitary $2$ dimensional CFT in the presence of topological defect lines by putting an upper and lower bound on the number of states with scaling dimension in the interval $[Δ-δ,Δ+δ]$ for large $Δ$ at fixed $δ$. Consequently we prove that given any unitary modular invariant $2$D CFT symmetric under finite global symmetry $G$ (acting faithfully), all the irreducible representations of $G$ appear in the spectra of the untwisted sector; the growth of states is Cardy like and proportional to the ''square'' of the dime…
We study the (super-)symmetries of classical solutions in the higher spin (super-)gravity in AdS$_3$. We show that the symmetries of the solutions are encoded in the holonomy around the spatial circle. When the spatial holonomies of the solutions are trivial, they preserve maximal symmetries of the theory, and are actually the smooth conical defects. We find all the smooth conical defects in the $sl(N), so(2N+1),sp(2N), so(2N), g_2$, as well as in $sl(N|N-1)$ and $osp(2N+1|2N)$ Chern-Simons gravity theories. In the bosonic higher spin cases, there are one-to-one correspondences between the smo…
We discuss the geometric origin of discrete higher form symmetries of quantum field theories in terms of defect groups from geometric engineering in M-theory. The flux non-commutativity in M-theory gives rise to (mixed) 't Hooft anomalies for the defect group which constrains the corresponding global structures of the associated quantum fields. We analyze the example of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM gauge theory in four dimensions, and we reproduce the well-known classification of global structures from reading between its lines. We extend this analysis to the case of 7d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SYM theory, w…

Discrete symmetries are spatially ubiquitous but are often hidden in internal states of systems where they can have especially profound consequences. In this work we create and verify exotic magnetic phases of atomic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates that, despite their continuous character and intrinsic spatial isotropy, exhibit complex discrete polytope symmetries in their topological defects. Using carefully tailored spinor rotations and microwave transitions, we engineer singular line defects whose quantization conditions, exchange statistics, and dynamics are fundamentally determined by th…
Boundary conditions and defects of any codimension are natural parts of any quantum field theory. Surface defects in three-dimensional topological field theories of Turaev-Reshetikhin type have applications to two-dimensional conformal field theories, in solid state physics and in quantum computing. We explain an obstruction to the existence of surface defects that takes values in a Witt group. We then turn to surface defects in Dijkgraaf-Witten theories and their construction in terms of relative bundles; this allows one to exhibit Brauer-Picard groups as symmetry groups of three-dimensional …
We study systems with an Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in terms of non-invertible symmetry. We present a new kind of non-invertible charge defect where a key role is played by a local current operator localized on the defect. The charge defects are now labeled by elements of a continuous $U(1)$. We use this construction to prove an analogue of Goldstone's theorem for such non-invertible symmetries. We comment on possible applications to string theory.
The global $e$-$m$ exchange symmetry of the toric code is realized locally through an exactly solvable Hamiltonian on a two dimensional lattice which has no lattice dislocations and their associated defect line. The Hamiltonian is still changed locally in selected sites where we wish to realize this anyon symmetry. We refer to these selected sites as defect sites in analogy with the usual lattice defects. The operators on the defect sites condense dyons of the toric code and are shown to support states which obey the fusion rules of Ising anyons just as the lattice dislocations thus achieving …
Using the zero-curvature formulation, it is shown that W-algebra transformations are symmetries of corresponding generalised Drinfel'd-Sokolov hierarchies. This result is illustrated with the examples of the KdV and Boussinesque hierarchies, and the hierarchy associated to the Polyakov-Bershadsky W-algebra.
We examine the precise structure of the loop algebra of `dressing' symmetries of the Principal Chiral Model, and discuss a new infinite set of abelian symmetries of the field equations which preserve a symplectic form on the space of solutions.
VSR symmetries are here naturally incorporated in the DKP algebra on the spin-0 and the spin-1 DKP sectors. We show that the Elko (dark) spinor fields structure plays an essential role on accomplishing this aim, unravelling hidden symmetries on the bosonic DKP fields under the action of discrete symmetries.
The relation between the $\widehat\gl(\infty)$ symmetry of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy and the Kac-Moody-Virasoro Lie point symmetries of the individual equations is established. The Lie point symmetries are shown to be the only local ones.
I give a brief summary of the results reported in hep-th 0306013 in collaboration with G. Amelino-Camelia and F. D'Andrea. I focus on the analysis of the symmetries of $κ$-Minkowski noncommutative space-time, described in terms of a Weyl map. The commutative space-time notion of Lie-algebra symmetries must be replaced by the one of Hopf-algebra symmetries. However, in the Hopf algebra sense, it is possible to construct an action in $κ$-Minkowski which is invariant under a 10-generators Poincaré-like symmetry algebra.
I discuss some aspects of conformal defects and conformal interfaces in two spacetime dimensions. Special emphasis is placed on their role as spectrum-generating symmetries of classical string theory.
Four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal quantum field theories contain a subsector carrying the structure of a chiral algebra. Using localization techniques, we show for the free hypermultiplet that this structure can be accessed directly from the path integral on the four-sphere. We extend the localization computation to include supersymmetric surface defects described by a generic 4d/2d coupled system. The presence of a defect corresponds to considering a module of the chiral algebra: our results provide a calculational window into its structure constants.
We sketch a procedure to capture general non-invertible symmetries of a d-dimensional quantum field theory in the data of a higher-category, which captures the local properties of topological defects associated to the symmetries. We also discuss fusions of topological defects, which involve condensations/gaugings of higher-categorical symmetries localized on the worldvolumes of topological defects. Recently some fusions of topological defects were discussed in the literature where the dimension of topological defects seems to jump under fusion. This is not possible in the standard description …
We consider two new classes of twisted D=4 quantum Poincaré symmetries described as the dual pairs of noncocommutative Hopf algebras. Firstly we investigate a two-parameter class of twisted Poincaré algebras which provide the examples of Lie-algebraic noncommutativity of the translations. The corresponding associative star-products and new deformed Lie-algebraic Minkowski spaces are introduced. We discuss further the twist deformations of Poincaré symmetries generated by the twist with its carrier in Lorentz algebra. We describe corresponding deformed Poincaré group which provides the quadrati…
We define a class of $A_\infty$-algebras that are obtained by deformations of higher spin symmetries. While higher spin symmetries of a free CFT form an associative algebra, the slightly broken higher spin symmetries give rise to a minimal $A_\infty$-algebra extending the associative one. These $A_\infty$-algebras are related to non-commutative deformation quantization much as the unbroken higher spin symmetries result from the conventional deformation quantization. In the case of three dimensions there is an additional parameter that the $A_\infty$-structure depends on, which is to be related…
We focus in this work to renew the interest in higher conformal spins symmetries and their relations to quantum field theories and integrable models. We consider the extension of the conformal Frappat et al. symmetries containing the Virasoro and the Antoniadis et al. algebras as particular cases describing geometrically special diffeomorphisms of the two dimensional torus $T^2$. We show in a consistent way, and explicitly, how one can extract these generalized symmetries from the Gelfand-Dickey algebra. The link with Liouville and Toda conformal field theories is established and various impor…
We show that the Extended Bargmann and Newton-Hooke algebras in 2+1 dimensions can be obtained as expansions of the Nappi-Witten algebra. The result can be generalized to obtain two infinite families of non-relativistic symmetries, which include the Maxwellian Exotic Bargmann symmetry, its generalized Newton-Hooke counterpart, and its Hietarinta dual. In each case, the invariant bilinear form on the Nappi-Witten algebra leads to the invariant tensor on the expanded algebra, allowing one to construct the corresponding Chern-Simons gravity theory.
Hidden symmetries, described by higher order in momenta integrals of motion that generate nonlinear algebras, are explored at the level of classical and quantum mechanics in a variety of physical systems related to conformal and superconformal invariance.
We investigate models described by real scalar fields, searching for defect structures in the presence of interactions which explicitly violate Lorentz and CPT symmetries. We first deal with a single field, and we investigate a class of models which supports traveling waves that violate Lorentz invariance. This scenario is then generalized to the case of two (or more) real scalar fields. In the case of two fields, in particular, we introduce another class of models, which supports topological structures that attain a Bogomol'nyi bound, although violating both Lorentz and CPT symmetries. An exa…
We will review the algebras which have been conjectured as symmetries in M-theory. The Borcherds algebras, which are the most general Lie algebras under control, seem natural candidates.
In this work, we show how states with conserved numbers of dynamical defects (strings, domain walls, etc.) can be understood as possessing generalised global symmetries even when the microscopic origins of these symmetries are unknown. Using this philosophy, we build an effective theory of a $2+1$-dimensional fluid state with two perpendicular sets of immersed elastic line defects. When the number of defects is independently conserved in each set, then the state possesses two one-form symmetries. Normally, such viscoelastic states are described as fluids coupled to Goldstone bosons associated …
Motivated by the three-dimensional topological field theory / two-dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) correspondence, we study a broad class of one-dimensional quantum mechanical models, known as anyonic chains, that can give rise to an enormously rich (and largely unexplored) space of two-dimensional critical theories in the thermodynamic limit. One remarkable feature of these systems is the appearance of non-local microscopic "topological symmetries" that descend to topological defects of the resulting CFTs. We derive various model-independent properties of these theories and of this to…

We study field theories with global dipole symmetries and gauge dipole symmetries. The famous Lifshitz theory is an example of a theory with a global dipole symmetry. We study in detail its 1+1d version with a compact field. When this global symmetry is promoted to a $U(1)$ dipole gauge symmetry, the corresponding gauge field is a tensor gauge field. This theory is known to lead to fractons. In order to resolve various subtleties in the precise meaning of these global or gauge symmetries, we place these 1+1d theories on a lattice and then take the continuum limit. Interestingly, the continuum …
