The Newtonian Euler-Poisson equations with attractive forces are the classical models for the evolution of gaseous stars and galaxies in astrophysics. In this paper, we use the integration method to study the blowup problem of the $N$-dimensional system with adiabatic exponent $γ>1$, in radial symmetry. We could show that the $C^{1}$ non-trivial classical solutions $(ρ,V)$, with compact support in $[0,R]$, where $R>0$ is a positive constant with $ρ(t,r)=0$ and $V(t,r)=0$ for $r\geq R$, under the initial condition \begin{equation} H_{0}=\int_{0}^{R}r^{n}V_{0}dr>\sqrt{\frac{2R^{2n-N+4}M}{n(n+1)(n-N+2)}}% \end{equation} with an arbitrary constant $n>\max(N-2,0),$\newline blow up before a finite time $T$ for pressureless fluids or $γ>1.$ Our results could fill some gaps about the blowup phenomena to the classical $C^{1}$ solutions of that attractive system with pressure under the first boundary condition.\newline In addition, the corresponding result for the repulsive systems is also provided. Here our result fully covers the previous case for $n=1$ in "M.W. Yuen, \textit{Blowup for the Euler and Euler-Poisson Equations with Repulsive Forces}, Nonlinear Analysis Series A: Theory, Methods & Applications 74 (2011), 1465--1470".

This article is the continued version of the analytical blowup solutions for 2-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations \cite{Y1}. With extension of the blowup solutions with radial symmetry for the isothermal Euler-Poisson equations in $R^{2}$, other special blowup solutions in $R^{2}$ with non-radial symmetry are constructed by the separation method. We notice that the results are the first evolutionary solutions with non-radial symmetry for the system. We study the Euler-Poisson equations of describing the evolution of the gaseous star in astrophysics. Firstly, we construct a family of analytical blowup solutions for the isothermal case in R^2. Furthermore the blowup rate of the above solutions is also studied and some remarks about the applicability of such solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations and the drift-diffusion model in semiconductors are included. Finally, for the isothermal case, the result of Makino and Perthame for the tame solutions is extended to show that the life span of such solutions must be finite if the initial…
In this paper, we study the blowup phenomena for the regular solutions of the isentropic relativistic Euler-Poisson equations with a vacuum state in spherical symmetry. Using a general family of testing functions, we obtain new blowup conditions for the relativistic Euler-Poisson equations. We also show that the proposed blowup conditions are valid regardless of the speed requirement, which was one of the key constraints stated in "Y. Geng, Singularity Formation for Relativistic Euler and Euler-Poisson Equations with Repulsive Force, Commun. Pure Appl. Anal., 14 (2015), 549--564.".
In this paper, we use integration method to show that there is no existence of global $C^{2}$ solution with compact support, to the pressureless Euler-Poisson equations with attractive forces in $R^{N}$. And the similar result can be shown, provided that the uniformly bounded functional:% \int_{Ω(t)}Kγ(γ-1)ρ^{γ-2}(\nablaρ)^{2}% dx+\int_{Ω(t)}Kγρ^{γ-1}Δρdx+ε\geq -δα(N)M, where $M$ is the mass of the solutions and $| Ω| $ is the fixed volume of $Ω(t)$. On the other hand, our differentiation method provides a simpler proof to show the blowup result in "D. H. Chae and E. Tadmor, \textit{On the Fin…
In this paper, we study the blowup of the $N$-dim Euler or Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces, in radial symmetry. We provide a novel integration method to show that the non-trivial classical solutions $(ρ,V)$, with compact support in $[0,R]$, where $R>0$ is a positive constant and in the sense which $ρ(t,r)=0$ and $V(t,r)=0$ for $r\geq R$, under the initial condition% $H_{0}=\int_{0}^{R}rV_{0}dr>0$ blow up on or before the finite time $T=R^{3}/(2H_{0})$ for pressureless fluids or $γ>1.$ The main contribution of this article provides the blowup results of the Euler $(δ=0)$ or Euler-…
We prove a Beale-Kato-Majda type criterion for the loss of regularity for solutions of the incompressible Euler equations in $H^{s}({\mathbb R}^3)$, for $s>\frac52$. Instead of double exponential estimates of Beale-Kato-Majda type, we obtain a single exponential bound on $\|u(t)\|_{H^s}$ involving the length parameter introduced by P. Constantin in \cite{co1}. In particular, we derive lower bounds on the blowup rate of such solutions.
In this paper, we continue to study the blowup problem of the $N$-dimensional compressible Euler or Euler-Poisson equations with repulsive forces, in radial symmetry. In details, we extend the recent result of "M.W. Yuen, \textit{Blowup for the Euler and Euler-Poisson Equations with Repulsive Forces}, Nonlinear Analysis Series A: Theory, Methods & Applications \textbf{74} (2011), 1465--1470.". We could further apply the integration method to obtain the more general results which the non-trivial classical solutions $(ρ,V)$, with compact support in $[0,R]$, where $R>0$ is a positive constant wit…
Pressureless Euler-Poisson equations with attractive forces are standard models in Newtonian cosmology. In this article, we further develop the spectral dynamics method and apply a novel spectral-dynamics-integration method to study the blowup conditions for $C^{2}$ solutions with a bounded domain, $\left\Vert X(t)\right\Vert \leq X_{0}$, where $\left\Vert\cdot\right\Vert $ denotes the volume and $X_{0}$ is a positive constant. In particular, we show that if the cosmological constant $Λ<M/X_{0}$, with the total mass $M$, then the non-trivial $C^{2}$ solutions in $R^{N}$ with the irrotational i…
In this article, we study the blowup phenomena of compressible Euler equations with non-vacuum initial data. Our new results, which cover a general class of testing functions, present new initial value blowup conditions. The corresponding blowup results of the 1-dimensional case in non-radial symmetry are also included.
By exploring a local geometric property of the vorticity field along a vortex filament, we establish a sharp relationship between the geometric properties of the vorticity field and the maximum vortex stretching. This new understanding leads to an improved result of the global existence of the 3-D Euler equation under mild assumptions that are consistent with the observations from recent numerical computations.
We revisit a family of infinite-energy solutions of the 3D incompressible Euler equations proposed by Gibbon et al. [9] and shown to blowup in finite time by Constantin [6]. By adding a damping term to the momentum equation we examine how the damping coefficient can arrest this blowup. Further, we show that similar infinite-energy solutions of the inviscid 3D Boussinesq system with damping can develop a singularity in finite time as long as the damping effects are insufficient to arrest the (undamped) 3D Euler blowup in the associated damped 3D Euler system.
Blowups of vorticity for the three- and two- dimensional homogeneous Euler equations are studied. Two regimes of approaching a blowup points, respectively, with variable or fixed time are analysed. It is shown that in the $n$-dimensional ($n=2,3$) generic case the blowups of degrees $1,..,n$ at the variable time regime and of degrees $1/2,..,(n+1)/(n+2)$ at the fixed time regime may exist. Particular situations when the vorticity blows while the direction of the vorticity vector is concentrated in one or two directions are realisable.
In this paper, we construct a new class of blowup solutions with elementary functions to the 3-dimensional compressible or incompressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. In detail, we obtain a class of global rotational exact solutions for the compressible fluids with $γ>1$:%} [c]{c}% ρ=\max\{\frac{γ-1}{Kγ}[ C^{2}[ x^{2}% +y^{2}+z^{2}-(xy+yz+xz)] -\dot{a}(t)(x+y+z)+b(t)], 0\} ^{\frac{1}{γ-1}} u_{1}=a(t)+C(y-z) u_{2}=a(t)+C(-x+z) u_{3}=a(t)+C(x-y). where a(t)=c_{0}+c_{1}t and b(t)=3c_{0}c_{1}t+{3/2}c_{1}^{2}t^{2}+c_{2}% with $C$, $c_{0}$, $c_{1}$ and $c_{2}$ are arbitrary constants; And the …
We study the construction of analytical non-radially solutions for the 1-dimensional compressible adiabatic Euler equations in this article. We could design the perturbational method to construct a new class of analytical solutions. In details, we perturb the linear velocity:% \begin{equation} u=c(t)x+b(t) \end{equation} and substitute it into the compressible Euler equations. By comparing the coefficients of the polynomial, we could deduce the corresponding functional differential system of $(c(t),b(t),ρ^{γ-1}(0,t)).$ Then by skillfully applying the Hubble's transformation: \begin{equation} c…
We prove by an explicit construction that solutions to incompressible 3D Euler equations defined in the periodic cube can be mapped bijectively to a new system of equations whose solutions are globally regular. We establish that the usual Beale-Kato-Majda criterion for finite-time singularity (or blowup) of a solution to the 3D Euler system is equivalent to a condition on the corresponding \emph{regular} solution of the new system. In the hypothetical case of Euler finite-time singularity, we provide an explicit formula for the blowup time in terms of the regular solution of the new system. Th…
We study the singularity formation of smooth solutions of the relativistic Euler equations in $(3+1)$-dimensional spacetime for both finite initial energy and infinite initial energy. For the finite initial energy case, we prove that any smooth solution, with compactly supported non-trivial initial data, blows up in finite time. For the case of infinite initial energy, we first prove the existence, uniqueness and stability of a smooth solution if the initial data is in the subluminal region away from the vacuum. By further assuming the initial data is a smooth compactly supported perturbation …
We study the interplay between the local geometric properties and the non-blowup of the 3D incompressible Euler equations. We consider the interaction of two perturbed antiparallel vortex tubes using Kerr's initial condition \cite{Kerr93}[Phys. Fluids {\bf 5} (1993), 1725]. We use a pseudo-spectral method with resolution up to $1536\times 1024 \times 3072$ to resolve the nearly singular behavior of the Euler equations. Our numerical results demonstrate that the maximum vorticity does not grow faster than double exponential in time, up to $t=19$, beyond the singularity time $t=18.7$ predicted b…
The paper discusses extensions of the renormalization group (RG) formalism for 3D incompressible Euler equations, which can be used for describing singularities developing in finite (blowup) or infinite time from smooth initial conditions of finite energy. In this theory, time evolution is substituted by the equivalent evolution for renormalized solutions governed by the RG equations. A fixed point attractor of the RG equations, if it exists, describes universal self-similar form of observable singularities. This universality provides a constructive criterion for interpreting results of numeri…
We study the pressureless Navier--Stokes-Poisson equations of describing the evolution of the gaseous star in astrophysics. The isothermal blowup solutions of Yuen, to the Euler-Poisson equations in R2, can be extended to the pressureless Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with density-dependent viscosity in R3. Besides some remarks, about the meaning of the blowup solutions and the applicability of such solutions to the the drift-diffusion model in semiconductors, are discussed in the end.
The pressureless Euler equations can be used as simple models of cosmology or plasma physics. In this paper, we construct the exact solutions in non-radial symmetry to the pressureless Euler equations in $R^{N}:$% [c]{c}% ρ(t,\vec{x})=\frac{f(\frac{1}{a(t)^{s}}\underset{i=1}{\overset {N}{\sum}}x_{i}^{s})}{a(t)^{N}}\text{,}\vec{u}(t,\vec{x}% )=\frac{\overset{\cdot}{a}(t)}{a(t)}\vec{x}, a(t)=a_{1}+a_{2}t. \label{eq234}% where the arbitrary function $f\geq0$ and $f\in C^{1};$ $s\geq1$, $a_{1}>0$ and $a_{2}$ are constants$.$\newline In particular, for $a_{2}<0$, the solutions blow up on the finite…
Compressible Euler-Poisson equations are the standard self-gravitating models for stellar dynamics in classical astrophysics. In this article, we construct periodic solutions to the isothermal ($γ=1$) Euler-Poisson equations in $R^{2}$ with possible applications to the formation of plate, spiral galaxies and the evolution of gas-rich, disk-like galaxies. The results complement Yuen's solutions without rotation (M.W. Yuen, Analytical Blowup Solutions to the 2-dimensional Isothermal Euler-Poisson Equations of Gaseous Stars, J. Math. Anal. Appl. 341(2008), 445--456.). Here, the periodic rotation …
We study the N-dimensional pressureless Navier--Stokes-Poisson equations with density-dependent viscosity. With the extension of the blowup solutions for the Euler-Poisson equations, the analytical blowup solutions,in radial symmetry, in R^N are constructed.
By the extension of the 3-dimensional analytical solutions of Goldreich and Weber "P. Goldreich and S. Weber, Homologously Collapsing Stellar Cores, Astrophys, J. 238, 991 (1980)" with adiabatic exponent gamma=4/3, to the (classical) Euler-Poisson equations without cosmological constant, the self-similar (almost re-collapsing) time-periodic solutions with negative cosmological constant (lambda<0) are constructed. The solutions with time-periodicity are novel. On basing these solutions, the time-periodic and almost re-collapsing model is conjectured, for some gaseous stars. Key Words: Analytica…
We construct steady states of the Euler-Poisson system with a barotropic equation of state as minimizers of a suitably defined energy functional. Their minimizing property implies the non-linear stability of such states against general, i.e., not necessarily spherically symmetric perturbations. The mathematical approach is based on previous stability results for the Vlasov-Poisson system by Y. Guo and the author, exploiting the energy-Casimir technique. The analysis is conditional in the sense that it assumes the existence of solutions to the initial value problem for the Euler-Poisson system …
Does three-dimensional incompressible Euler flow with smooth initial conditions develop a singularity with infinite vorticity after a finite time? This blowup problem is still open. After briefly reviewing what is known and pointing out some of the difficulties, we propose to tackle this issue for the class of flows having analytic initial data for which hypothetical real singularities are preceded by singularities at complex locations. We present some results concerning the nature of complex space singularities in two dimensions and propose a new strategy for the numerical investigation of bl…
The dynamics of gaseous stars can be described by the Euler-Poisson system. Inspired by Rein's stability result for $γ>{4/3}$, we prove the nonlinear instability of steady states for the adiabatic exponent $γ={6/5}$ in spherically symmetric and isentropic motion.
Based on an identity of Jacobi, we prove a simple formula that computes the pushforward of analytic functions of the exceptional divisor of a blowup of a projective variety along a smooth complete intersection with normal crossing. We apply this pushforward formula to derive generating functions for Euler characteristics of crepant resolutions of singular Weierstrass models given by Tate's algorithm. Since these Euler characteristics depend only on the sequence of blowups and not on the Kodaira fiber itself, nor the associated group, several distinct Tate models have the same Euler characteris…
We consider the Cauchy problem with smooth data for compressible Euler equations in many dimensions and concentrate on two cases: solutions with finite mass and energy and solutions corresponding to a compact perturbation of a nontrivial stationary state. We prove the blowup results using the characteristics of the propagation of the solution in space and find upper and lower bounds for the density of a smooth solution in a given region of space in terms of the initial data. To solve the problems, we introduce a special family of integral functionals and study their temporal dynamics.
We consider the Euler-Poincaré equation on $\mathbb R^d$, $d\ge 2$. For a large class of smooth initial data we prove that the corresponding solution blows up in finite time. This settles an open problem raised by Chae and Liu \cite{Chae Liu}. Our analysis exhibits some new concentration mechanism and hidden monotonicity formula associated with the Euler-Poincaré flow. In particular we show the abundance of blowups emanating from smooth initial data with certain sign properties. No size restrictions are imposed on the data. We also showcase a class of initial data for which the corresponding s…
This paper is concerned with the 1-D compressible Euler-Poisson equations with moving physical vacuum boundary condition. It is usually used to describe the motion of a self-gravitating inviscid gaseous star. The local well-posedness of classical solutions is established in the case of the adiabatic index $1<γ<3$.
This paper presents the vortical and self-similar solutions for 2D compressible Euler equations using the separation method. These solutions complement Makino's solutions in radial symmetry without rotation. The rotational solutions provide new information that furthers our understanding of ocean vortices and reference examples for numerical methods. In addition, the corresponding blowup, time-periodic or global existence conditions are classified through an analysis of the new Emden equation. A conjecture regarding rotational solutions in 3D is also made.
The classical model of an isolated selfrgavitating gaseous star is given by the Euler-Poisson system with a polytropic pressure law $P(ρ)=ρ^γ$, $γ>1$. For any $1<γ<\frac43$, we construct an infinite-dimensional family of collapsing solutions to the Euler-Poisson system whose density is in general space inhomogeneous and undergoes gravitational blowup along a prescribed space-time surface, with continuous mass absorption at the origin. The leading order singular behavior is described by an explicit collapsing solution of the pressureless Euler-Poisson system.
We study the stabilities and classical solutions of Euler-Poisson equations of describing the evolution of the gaseous star in astrophysics. In fact, we extend the study the stabilities of Euler-Poisson equations with or without frictional damping term to some special dimensional spaces. Besides, by using the second inertia function in 2 dimension of Euler-Poisson equations, we prove the non-global existence of classical solutions with $2\int_Ω(ρ| u| ^{2}+2P)dx<gM^{2}-ε$, for any $γ$.
We prove that the maximum norm of the deformation tensor of velocity gradients controls the possible breakdown of smooth(strong) solutions for the 3-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations, which will happen, for example, if the initial density is compactly supported \cite{X1}. More precisely, if a solution of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations is initially regular and loses its regularity at some later time, then the loss of regularity implies the growth without bound of the deformation tensor as the critical time approaches. Our result is the same as Ponce's criterion for 3-di…
In this paper, we present rotational and self-similar solutions for the compressible Euler equations in R^3 using the separation method. These solutions partly complement Yuen's irrotational and elliptic solutions in R^3 [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simul. 17 (2012), 4524-4528] as well as rotational and radial solutions in R^2 [Commun. Nonlinear Sci. Numer. Simul. 19 (2014), 2172-2180]. A newly deduced Emden dynamical system is obtained. Some blowup phenomena and global existences of the responding solutions can be determined. The 3D rotational solutions provide concrete reference examples f…
We study some particular solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Poisson equations with density-dependent viscosity and with pressure, in radial symmetry. With extension of the previous known blowup solutions for the Euler-Poisson equations / pressureless Navier-Stokes-Poisson with density-dependent viscosity, we constructed the corresponding analytical blowup solutions for the Navier-Stokes-Poisson Equations with density-dependent viscosity and with pressure.
With the previous results for the analytical blowup solutions of the N-dimensional Euler-Poisson equations, we extend the similar structure to construct an analytical family of solutions for the isothermal Navier-Stokes equations and pressureless Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity.
In the supercritical range of the polytropic indices $γ\in(1,\frac43)$ we show the existence of smooth radially symmetric self-similar solutions to the gravitational Euler-Poisson system. These solutions exhibit gravitational collapse in the sense that the density blows-up in finite time. Some of these solutions were numerically found by Yahil in 1983 and they can be thought of as polytropic analogues of the Larson-Penston collapsing solutions in the isothermal case $γ=1$. They each contain a sonic point, which leads to numerous mathematical difficulties in the existence proof.
Based on Makino's solutions with radially symmetry, we extend the corresponding ones with elliptic symmetry for the compressible Euler and Navier-Stokes equations in R^{N} (N\geq2). By the separation method, we reduce the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations into 1+N differential functional equations. In detail, the velocity is constructed by the novel Emden dynamical system: {<K1.1/>| <K1.1 ilk="MATRIX" > a_{i}(t)=(ξ/(a_{i}(t)(Πa_{k}(t))^{γ-1})), for i=1,2,....,N a_{i}(0)=a_{i0}>0, a_{i}(0)=a_{i1} </K1.1> with arbitrary constants ξ, a_{i0} and a_{i1}. Some blowup phenomena or global existences o…
Stars are essentially gravitationally stabilised thermonuclear reactors in hydrostatic equilibrium. The fundamental differential equation for all Newtonian gaseous stars in equilibrium is \begin{align} \frac{dp(r)}{dr}=-\frac{\mathscr{G}\mathcal{M}(r)ρ(r)}{r^{2}}\nonumber \end{align} where $p(r),ρ(r)$ are the pressure, density at radius $r$ and $\mathcal{M}(r)$ is the mass contained within a shell of radius $r$ given by $\mathcal{M}(r)=\int_{0}^{r}4π\overline{r}^{2} ρ(\overline{r})d\overline{r}$, and $\mathscr{G}$ is Newton's constant. This simple but crucial differential equation for the pres…
