Layered-antiferromagnetic compound CuCrS2 has been prepared by different methods. The analysis of X-ray diffraction patterns of different samples gave significant amount of vacancy-disorder of Cr-atoms within the layers. Extended period of sintering above 9000C increases the transfer of Cr-atoms to the interstitial sites between the layers. This disorder has marginal effect on the Antiferromagnetic properties. The electrical conductivity is increased and the thermoelectric power remains positive and quite high between 150-400\muV/K in the paramagnetic state around room temperature with increase in disorder in different samples. We interpret the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity and thermoelectric power due to the localization of carriers by interstitial defects and the formation of magnetic polarons in the paramagnetic phase of CuCrS2.
Historically, finding two-dimensional (2D) magnets is well known to be a difficult task due to instability against thermal spin fluctuations. Metals are also normally considered poor thermoelectric (TE) materials. Combining intrinsic magnetism in two dimensions with conducting properties, one may expect to get the worst for thermoelectrics. However, we will show this is not always the case. Here, we investigate spin-dependent TE properties of monolayer chromium pnictides (CrX, where X = P, As, Sb, and Bi) using first-principles calculations of electrons and phonons, along with Boltzmann transp…
Short-range magnetic correlations can significantly increase the thermopower of magnetic semiconductors, representing a noteworthy development in the decades-long effort to develop high-performance thermoelectric materials. Here, we reveal the nature of the thermopower-enhancing magnetic correlations in the antiferromagnetic semiconductor MnTe. Using magnetic pair distribution function analysis of neutron scattering data, we obtain a detailed, real-space view of robust, nanometer-scale, antiferromagnetic correlations that persist into the paramagnetic phase above the Néel temperature $T_{\math…

We report a comprehensive study on the magnetic and structural properties of the spinel sulfides LiInCr4S8, LiGaCr4S8, and CuInCr4S8, where Li+/Cu+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions form a zinc-blende-type order. On the basis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetization data obtained using polycrystalline samples, these three sulfides are suggested to be breathing pyrochlore magnets with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions on the small and large tetrahedra, respectively. The measured magnetization processes of the three sulfides up to 72 T are significantly different. The magne…
MCrS2 compounds (M=Li, Na, K, Cu, Ag, and Au) with triangular Cr layers show large variety of magnetic ground states ranging from 120-degree antiferromagnetic order of Cr spins in LiCrS2 to double stripes in AgCrS2, helimagnetic order in NaCrS2, and, finally, ferromagnetic Cr layers in KCrS2. On the base of ab-initio band structure calculations and an analysis of various contributions to exchange interactions between Cr spins we explain this tendency as originating from a competition between antiferromagnetic direct nearest-neighbor d-d exchange and ferromagnetic superexchange via S p states w…
The influence of magnetism on the properties of screw dislocations in body-centered cubic chromium is investigated by means of ab initio calculations. Screw dislocations having Burgers vectors 1/2 111 and 100 are considered, following experimental observations showing activity for both slip systems. At low temperature, chromium has a magnetic order close to antiferromagnetism along 100 directions, for which 1/2 111 is not a periodicity vector. Hence, dislocations with Burgers vectors 1/2 111 generate magnetic faults when shearing the crystal, which constrain them to coexist and move pairwise, …

Materials that demonstrate large magnetoresistance have attracted significant interest for many decades. Recently, extremely large tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) has been reported by several groups across ultrathin CrI$_3$ by exploiting the weak antiferromagnetic coupling between adjacent layers. Here, we report a comparative study of TMR in all three chromium trihalides (CrX$_3$, X= Cl, Br, or I) in the two-dimensional limit. As the materials exhibit different transition temperatures and interlayer magnetic ordering in the ground state, tunneling measurements allow for an easy determination o…
Chromium nitride (CrN) is a well-known hard coating material that has found applications in abrasion and wear-resistant cutting tools, bearings, and tribology applications due to its high hardness, high-temperature stability, and corrosion-resistant properties. In recent years, CrN has also attracted significant interest due to its high thermoelectric power factor, and for its unique and intriguing metal-insulator phase transition. While CrN bulk single-crystals exhibit the characteristic metal-insulator transition accompanied with structural (orthorhombic-to-rocksalt) and magnetic (antiferrom…
The discovery of an intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM-TI) in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has attracted intense attention, most of which lies on its electrical properties. In this paper, we report electronic, thermal, and thermoelectric transport studies of this newly found AFM-TI. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of its resistivity, thermal conductivity, and Seebeck coefficient indicate strong coupling between charge, lattice, and spin degrees of freedom in this system. Furthermore, MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ exhibits a large anomalous Nernst signal, which is associated with non-zero …
Chromium trihalides, CrX$_3$ (with X = Cl, Br, I), are a family of layered magnetic materials that can be easily exfoliated to provide ferromagnetic monolayers. When two layers are stacked together to form a bilayer the interlayer exchange coupling can be either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending on the stacking sequence. Here we combine crystallographic arguments based on the close-packing condition with first-principles simulations to enumerate all possible stacking patterns in CrX$_3$ bilayers that preserve the spatial periodicity of each layer. We recover all configurations obser…
We systematically study the pristine and doped chromium arsenide (CrAs) in six different crystal structures to investigate the structural, magnetic, and optical properties for real applications by first-principles calculations. First, we found that the ground-state structure is an orthorhombic MnP-type structure with antiferromagnetic spin order. The rocksalt structure is an low-energy metastable phase and a ferromagnetic metal with high spin polarization at the Fermi level. Secondly, the NiAs structure and MnP structure have a higher absorption coefficient than other structures in the infrare…
We report on optical transmission spectroscopy of the Cr-based frustrated triangular antiferromagnets CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4, and the spinels CdCr2O4 and ZnCr2O4 in the near-infrared to visible-light frequency range. We explore the possibility to search for spin correlations far above the magnetic ordering temperature and for anomalies in the magnon lifetime in the magnetically ordered state by probing exciton-magnon sidebands of the spin-forbidden crystal-field transitions of the Cr3+ ions (spin S = 3/2). In CuCrO2 and alpha-CaCr2O4 the appearance of fine structures below T_N is assigned to…
Polycrystalline Nd2Ru2O7 samples have been prepared and examined using a combination of structural, magnetic, and electrical and thermal transport studies. Analysis of synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction patterns suggests some site disorder on the A-site in the pyrochlore sublattice: Ru substitutes on the Nd-site up to 7.0(3)%, regardless of the different preparative conditions explored. Intrinsic magnetic and electrical transport properties have been measured. Ru 4d spins order antiferromagnetically at 143 K as seen both in susceptibility and specific heat, and there is a corresponding …
The electrical, thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of the quenched, annealed and slowly cooled phases of the layer compound CuCrS2 have been reported between 15K to 300K. We also confirm the antiferromagnetic transition at 40K in them by our magnetic measurements between 2K and 300K. The crystal flakes show a minimum around 100K in their in-plane resistance behavior. For the polycrystalline pellets the resistivity depends on their flaky texture and it attains at most 10 to 20 times of the room temperature value at the lowest temperature of measurement. The temperature dependence is c…
Transport and thermoelectric coefficients (including also spin thermopower) of silicene nanoribbons with zigzag edges are investigated by {\it ab-initio} numerical methods. Local spin density of such nanoribbons reveals edge magnetism. Like in graphene, one finds antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic ordering, with spin polarization at one edge antiparallel or parallel to that at the other edge, respectively. Thermoelectric properties, especially the Seebeck coefficient, significantly depend on the electronic band structure and are enhanced when the Fermi level is in the energy gap. However, the…
In search of better thermoelectric materials, we have systematically investigated the thermoelectric properties of a 122 Zintl phase compound EuCd$_{2}$As$_{2}$ using \textit{ab-initio} density functional theory and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory within constant relaxation time approximation. Considering the ground state magnetic structure which is A-type antiferromagnetic (A-AFM) and non-magnetic (NM) structure, we evaluated various thermoelectric parameters such as Seebeck coefficient, electrical and thermal conductivity, power factor and figure of merit (ZT) as function temperatu…
A magnon Nernst effect, an antiferromagnetic analogue of the magnon Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulators, has been studied experimentally for a layered antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3 in contact with two Pt strips. Thermoelectric voltage in the Pt strips grown on MnPS3 single crystals exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence at low temperatures, which cannot be explained by electronic origins in Pt but can be ascribed to the inverse spin Hall voltage induced by a magnon Nernst effect. Control of antiferromagnetic domains in the MnPS3 crystal by magnetoelectric cooling is found to mod…
Searching for a high anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) is crucial for thermoelectric energy conversion applications because the associated unique transverse geometry facilitates module fabrication. Topological ferromagnets with large Berry curvatures show high ANEs; however, they face drawbacks such as strong magnetic disturbances and low mobility due to high magnetization. Herein, we demonstrate that YbMnBi2, a canted antiferromagnet, has a large ANE conductivity of ~10 Am-1K-1 that surpasses the common high values (i.e. 3-5 Am-1K-1) observed so far in ferromagnets. The canted spin structure of M…
In this article, I study magnetic response of electron wavefunctions in a commensurate collinear antiferromagnet. I show that, at a special set of momenta, hidden anti-unitary symmetry protects Kramers degeneracy of Bloch eigenstates against a magnetic field, pointing transversely to staggered magnetization. Hence a substantial momentum dependence of the transverse g-factor in the Zeeman term, turning the latter into a spin-orbit coupling, that may be present in materials from chromium to borocarbides, cuprates, pnictides, as well as organic and heavy fermion conductors.
Chromium selenide thin films were grown epitaxially on Al${_2}$O${_3}$(0001) and Si(111)-(7${\times}$7) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Sharp streaks in reflection high-energy electron diffraction and triangular structures in scanning tunneling microscopy indicate a flat smooth film growth along the c-axis, and is very similar to that from a hexagonal surface. X-ray diffraction pattern confirms the growth along the c-axis with c-axis lattice constant of 17.39 Å. The grown film is semiconducting, having a small band gap of about 0.034 eV, as calculated from the temperature depend…
It is of fundamental importance but challenging to simultaneously identify atomic and magnetic configurations of two-dimensional van der Waals materials. In this work, we show that the nonreciprocal second-harmonic generation (SHG) can be a powerful tool to answer this challenge. Despite the preserved lattice inversion symmetry, the interlayer antiferromagnetic order and spin-orbit coupling generate enhanced SHG in PT-symmetric bilayer chromium triiodide (CrI3). Importantly, the in-plane polarization-resolved SHG is sensitive to subtly different interlayer structures that cannot be told by lin…
The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) - the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal heat current in conducting ferromagnets or antiferromagnets - is an appealing approach for thermoelectric power generation in spin caloritronics. The ANE in antiferromagnets is particularly convenient for the fabrication of highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles as lateral configurations of thermoelectric modules increase the coverage of heat source without suffering from the stray fields that are intrinsic to ferromagnets. In this work, using first-principles calculations togethe…
The tetragonal phase of chromium (III) oxide, although unstable in the bulk, can be synthesized in epitaxial heterostructures. The theoretical investigation by density functional theory predicts an antiferromagnetic ground state for this compound. We demonstrate experimentally antiferromagnetism up to 40 K in ultrathin films of t-Cr2O3 by electrical measurements exploiting interface effect within a neighboring ultrathin Pt layer. We show that magnetotransport in Pt is affected by both spin-Hall magnetoresistance and magnetic proximity effect while we exclude any role of magnetism for the low-t…
Transverse thermoelectric effects in response to an out-of-plane heat current have been studied in an external magnetic field for ferromagnetic superlattices consisting of La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and SrRuO3 layers. The superlattices were fabricated on SrTiO3 substrates by pulsed laser deposition. We found that the sign of the transverse thermoelectric voltage for the superlattices is opposite to that for La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 and SrRuO3 single layers at 200 K, implying an important role of spin Seebeck effects inside the superlattices. At 10 K, the magnetothermoelectric curves shift from the zero field du…
Using ab-initio methods we calculate thermoelectric and spin thermoelectric properties of silicene nanoribbons with bare, mono-hydrogenated and di-hydrogenated edges. Asymmetric structures, in which one edge is either bare or di-hydrogenated while the other edge is mono-hydrogenated (0H-1H and 2H-1H nanoribbons) have ferromagnetic ground state and display remarkable conventional and spin thermoelectric properties. Strong enhancement of the thermoelectric efficiency, both conventional and spin ones, results from a very specific band structure of such nanoribbons, where one spin channel is block…
Otherwise antiferromagnetic chromium is shown to couple ferromagnetically when doped into GaN irrespective of whether the host is a crystal or a cluster. The results on the doped clusters and crystals are obtained from density functional theory based molecular orbital theory and linearized muffin tin orbital tight binding supercell band structure method respectively. The calculated half metallic behavior of Cr-doped GaN crystal combined with the observed room temperature Curie point make it an ideal candidate for spintronics applications.
The low-temperature transport properties (resistivity, thermal conductivity, thermoelectric power) are experimentally investigated for the compound YbMn2Sb2. Large Seebeck coefficient and nearly linear temperature dependence of resistivity are obtained. The thermal conductivity is large and has mainly phonon origin. Appreciable anomalies of transport characteristics near the antiferromagnetic transition point are found. Possible influence of pseudo-Kondo scattering is discussed.
We report the Sr substitution effect in an antiferromagnetic insulator LaMnAsO. The Sr doping limit is $x\sim$ 0.10 under the synthesis conditions, as revealed by x-ray diffractions indicate. Upon Sr doping, the room-temperature resistivity drops by five orders of magnitude down to $\sim$0.01 $Ω\cdot$cm, and the temperature dependence of resistivity shows essentially metallic behavior for $x\geq$0.08. Hall and Seebeck measurements confirm consistently that the insulator-to-metal transition is due to hole doping. Strikingly, the room-temperature Seebeck coefficient for the metallic samples is a…
Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal temperature gradient, has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in the thermoelectric power conversion and close relevance to the Berry curvature of the band structure. Avoiding the stray field of ferromagnets, ANE in antiferromagnets (AFM) has the advantage of realizing highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles. Here, we report the observation of ANE in an antiperovskite noncollinear AFM Mn3SnN experimentally, which is triggered by the enhanced Berr…
The interplay of magnetic and semiconducting properties has been in the focus since more than a half of the century. In this introductory article we briefly review the key properties and functionalities of various magnetic semiconductor families, including europium chalcogenides, chromium spinels, dilute magnetic semiconductors, dilute ferromagnetic semiconductors and insulators, mentioning also sources of non-uniformities in the magnetization distribution, accounting for an apparent high Curie temperature ferromagnetism in many systems. Our survey is carried out from today's perspective of fe…
Magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and Hall effect have been investigated on single-crystalline Ce_2PdSi_3. This compound is shown to order antiferromagnetically below N'eel temperature (T_N) \~3 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient far below T_N is found to be about 110 mJ/K^2 mol Ce, which indicates the heavy-fermion character of this compound. The transport and magnetic properties exhibit large anisotropy with an interplay between crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo effects. The sign of thermoelectric power is opposite for different directions at hig…
The Seebeck and Peltier effects have been widely studied and used in various thermoelectric technologies, including thermal energy harvesting and solid-state heat pumps. However, basic and applied studies on the Thomson effect, another fundamental thermoelectric effect in conductors, are limited despite the fact that the Thomson effect allows electronic cooling through the application of a temperature gradient bias rather than the construction of junction structures. In this article, we report the observation of a giant Thomson effect that appears owing to magnetic phase transitions. The Thoms…
Temperature gradient in a ferromagnetic conductor may generate a spontaneous transverse voltage drop in the direction perpendicular to both magnetization and heat current. This anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) has been considered to be proportional to the magnetization, and thus observed only in ferromagnets, while recent theories indicate that ANE provides a measure of the Berry curvature at the Fermi energy $E_{\rm F}$. Here we report the observation of a large ANE at zero field in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn. Despite a very small magnetization $\sim 0.002$ $μ_{\rm B}/$Mn, the transvers…
Two-dimensional (2D) intrinsic ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductors are crucial to develop low-dimensional spintronic devices. Using density functional theory, we show that single-layer chromium trihalides (SLCTs) (CrX$_3$,X=F, Cl, Br and I) constitute a series of stable 2D intrinsic FM semiconductors. A free-standing SLCT can be easily exfoliated from the bulk crystal, due to a low cleavage energy and a high in-plane stiffness. Electronic structure calculations using the HSE06 functional indicate that both bulk and single-layer CrX$_3$ are half semiconductors with indirect gaps and their valence…
We have studied a nearly stoichiometric insulating Y$_{0.97(2)}$Cr$_{0.98(2)}$O$_{3.00(2)}$ single crystal by performing measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction. Albeit that the YCrO$_3$ compound behaviors like a soft ferromagnet with a coersive force of $\sim$ 0.05 T, there exist strong antiferromagnetic (AFM) interactions between Cr$^{3+}$ spins due to a strongly negative paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, i.e., -433.2(6) K. The coexistence of ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism may indicate a canted AFM structure. The AFM phase transition occurs at $T_\tex…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental study of a novel quaternary Heusler system CoFeVSb from the view point of room temperature spintronics and thermoelectric applications. It crystallizes in cubic structure with small DO$_3$-type disorder. The presence of disorder is confirmed by room temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction(XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) measurements. Magnetization data reveal high ordering temperature with a saturation magnetization of 2.2 $μ_B$/f.u. Resistivity measurements reflect half-metallic nature. Double hysteresis loop along …
The thermopower and Nernst effect were investigated for undoped parent compounds LaFeAsO and LaNiAsO. Both thermopower and Nernst signal in iron-based LaFeAsO are significantly larger than those in nickel-based LaNiAsO. Furthermore, abrupt changes in both thermopower and Nernst effect are observed below the structural phase transition temperature and spin-density wave (SDW) type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order temperature in Fe-based LaFeAsO. On the other hand, Nernst effect is very small in the Ni-based LaNiAsO and it is weakly temperature-dependent, reminiscent of the case in normal metals. We…
Barium ruthenate Ba$_{4}$Ru$_{3}$O$_{10}$, in which Ru$_{3}$O$_{12}$ trimers are connected together to form a chequered two-dimensional framework, has been synthesised and its structural, magnetic and transport properties studied between 300 K and 2 K. The paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N \sim 105$ K evidenced on the susceptibility curve coincides with an increase of electron localization in transport measurements. Thermoelectric power and Hall coefficient measurements both exhibit dramatic changes at $T_N$, characteristic of a reconstruction of the bands structure near the…
Sodium cobaltate Na_xCoO_2 as dopable strongly correlated layered material with a triangular sublattice still poses a challenging problem in condensed matter. The intriguing interplay between lattice, charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom leads to a complex phase diagram bounded by a nominal Mott (x=0) regime and a band-insulating (x=1) phase. By means of the charge self-consistent density functional theory (DFT) plus dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) scheme, built on a pseudopotential framework combined with a continuous-time quantum Monte-Carlo solver, we here study the one-particle s…
Cr0.68Se single crystals with two-dimensional (2D) character have been grown, and the detailed magnetization M(T), electrical transport properties (including longitudinal resistivity and Hall resistivity and thermal transport ones (including heat capacity Cp(T) and thermoelectric power (TEP) S(T)) have been measured. There are some interesting phenomena: (i) Cr0.68Se presents a non-collinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconducting behavior with the Neel temperature TN = 42 K and the activated energy Eg=3.9 meV; (ii) It exhibits the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) below TN and large negative magneto…
