Investigating the off-diagonal components of the conductivity and thermoelectric tensor of materials hosting complex antiferromagnetic structures has become a viable method to reveal the effects of topology and chirality on the electronic transport in these systems. In this respect, Mn$_5$Si$_3$ is an interesting metallic compound that exhibits several antiferromagnetic phases below 100 K with different collinear and noncollinear arrangements of Mn magnetic moments. Previous investigations have shown that the transitions between the various phases give rise to large changes of the anomalous Hall effect. Here, we report measurements of the anomalous Nernst effect of Mn$_5$Si$_3$ single crystals. Below 25 K we observe a sign change of the zero-field Nernst signal with a concomitant decrease of the Hall signal and a gradual reduction of the remanent magnetization which we attribute to a subtle rearrangement of the magnetic moment configuration at low temperatures.
Noncollinear antiferromagnets have recently been attracting considerable interest partly due to recent surprising discoveries of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in them and partly because they have promising applications in antiferromagnetic spintronics. Here we study the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), a phenomenon having the same origin as the AHE, and also the spin Nernst effect (SNE) as well as AHE and the spin Hall effect (SHE) in noncollinear antiferromagnetic Mn$_3X$ ($X$ = Sn, Ge, Ga) within the Berry phase formalism based on {\it ab initio} relativistic band structure calculations. For…
We investigate the intrinsic magnon spin current in a noncollinear antiferromagnetic insulator. We introduce a definition of the magnon spin current in a noncollinear antiferromagnet and find that it is in general non-conserved, but for certain symmetries and spin polarizations the averaged effect of non-conserving terms can vanish. We formulate a general linear response theory for magnons in noncollinear antiferromagnets subject to a temperature gradient and analyze the effect of symmetries on the response tensor. We apply this theory to single-layer potassium iron jarosite KFe$_3$(OH)$_6$(SO…
The anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) - the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal heat current in conducting ferromagnets or antiferromagnets - is an appealing approach for thermoelectric power generation in spin caloritronics. The ANE in antiferromagnets is particularly convenient for the fabrication of highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles as lateral configurations of thermoelectric modules increase the coverage of heat source without suffering from the stray fields that are intrinsic to ferromagnets. In this work, using first-principles calculations togethe…
Anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), the generation of a transverse electric voltage by a longitudinal temperature gradient, has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in the thermoelectric power conversion and close relevance to the Berry curvature of the band structure. Avoiding the stray field of ferromagnets, ANE in antiferromagnets (AFM) has the advantage of realizing highly efficient and densely integrated thermopiles. Here, we report the observation of ANE in an antiperovskite noncollinear AFM Mn3SnN experimentally, which is triggered by the enhanced Berr…
Noncollinear antiferromagnets have promising potential to replace ferromagnets in the field of spintronics as high-density devices with ultrafast operation. To take full advantage of noncollinear antiferromagnets in spintronics applications, it is important to achieve efficient manipulation of noncollinear antiferromagnetic spin. Here, using the anomalous Hall effect as an electrical signal of the triangular magnetic configuration, spin-orbit torque switching with no external magnetic field is demonstrated in noncollinear antiferromagnetic antiperovskite manganese nitride Mn$_3$GaN at room tem…
The nonlinear absorption of radio waves (200 - 800 MHz) in a noncollinear cubic antiferromagnet Mn3Al2Ge3O12 in an external magnetic field H || [001] has been studied in the temperature range of 1.2 - 4.2 K. We attribute the observed dissipation of the electromagnetic energy to the parametric excitation of inhomogeneous surface waves at the boundaries of antiferromagnetic domains.
We report electrical current switching of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$GaN/Pt bilayers at room temperature. The Hall resistance of these bilayers can be manipulated by applying a pulse current of $1.5\times10^6$~A/cm$^2$, whereas no significant change is observed up to $\sim10^8$~A/cm$^2$ in Mn$_3$GaN single films, indicating that the Pt layer plays an important role. In comparison with ferrimagnetic Mn$_3$GaN/Pt bilayers, a lower electrical current switching of noncollinear AFM Mn$_3$GaN is demonstrated, with a critical current density two orders of magnitude smaller. Our result…
Magneto-optical Kerr effect, normally found in magnetic materials with nonzero magnetization such as ferromagnets and ferrimagnets, has been known for more than a century. Here, using first-principles density functional theory, we demonstrate large magneto-optical Kerr effect in high temperature noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn$_{3}X$ ($X$ = Rh, Ir, or Pt), in contrast to usual wisdom. The calculated Kerr rotation angles are large, being comparable to that of transition metal magnets such as bcc Fe. The large Kerr rotation angles and ellipticities are found to originate from the lifting of the…
Spintronic phenomena to date have been established in magnets with collinear moments, where the spin injection through the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) is always along the out-of-plane direction. Here, we report the observation of a vector SSE in a noncollinear antiferromagnet (AF) LuFeO$_3$, where temperature gradient along the out-of-plane and also the in-plane directions can both inject a pure spin current and generate a voltage in the heavy metal via the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE). We show that the thermovoltages are due to the magnetization from canted spins in LuFeO$_3$. Furthermore, i…
The 55Mn nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum of noncollinear 12-sublattice antiferromagnet Mn3Al2Ge3O12 has been studied in the frequency range of 200 - 640 MHz in the external magnetic field H || [001]} at T=1.2 K. Three absorption lines have been observed in fields less than the field of the reorientation transition Hc at the polarization h||H of the rf field. Two lines have been observed at H > Hc and h_|_H. The spectral parameters indicate that the magnetic structure of manganese garnet differs slightly from the exchange triangular 120-degree structure. The anisotropy of the spin reduction…
Magnetotransport is at the center of the spintronics. Mn3Sn, an antiferromagnet that has a noncollinear 120° spin order, exhibits large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature. But such a behavior has been remained elusive in Mn3Sn films. Here we report the observation of robust AHE up to room temperature in quasi-epitaxial Mn3Sn thin films, prepared by magnetron sputtering. The growth of both (11-20)- and (0001)-oriented Mn3Sn films provides a unique opportunity for comparing AHE in three different measurement configurations. When the magnetic field is swept along (0001) plane, such a…
Here we present the tetragonal stoichiometric Heusler compound Pt$_2$MnGa with the noncollinear AFM order stable up to 350 K. It is resolved by the neutron diffraction as a helical spiral propagating along the tetragonal axis. Ab-initio calculations suggest a pure exchange origin of the spiral and explain its helical character being stabilized by a large basal plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA). Together with the inversion-symmetric crystal structure, this provides a bi-stability of a spiral with respect to the right- and left-handed magnetic helices. Despite the large MCA, the long per…
We predict a large anomalous Nernst effect in the inverse Heusler compensated ferrimagnets Ti$_2$Mn$X$ ($X$=Al,Ga,In) with vanishing net magnetic moments. Though the net magnetic moment is zero, the Weyl points in these systems lead to a large anomalous Nernst conductivity (ANC) due to the lack of a magnetic sublattice that inverses the sign of the Berry curvature. In comparison to the noncollinear antiferromagnets Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge, the high ANC stems almost entirely from the Weyl points in this class of compounds, and thus, it is topologically protected. This work shows for the first tim…
Metallic antiferromagnets with noncollinear orientation of magnetic moments provide a playground for investigating spin-dependent transport properties by analysis of the anomalous Hall effect. The intermetallic compound Mn5Si3 is an intinerant antiferromagnet with collinear and noncollinear magnetic structures due to Mn atoms on two inequivalent lattice sites. Here, magnetotransport measurements on polycrystalline thin films and a single crystal are reported. In all samples, an additional contribution to the anomalous Hall effect attributed to the noncollinear arrangment of magnetic moments is…
We have investigated the interplay between magnetic and structural degrees of freedom in elemental Mn. The equilibrium volume is shown to depend critically on the magnetic interactions between the Mn atoms. While the standard generalized-gradient-approximation underestimates the equilibrium volume, a more accurate treatment of the effects of electronic localization and magnetism is found to solve this longstanding problem. We capture well the complexity of the large 58 atoms per unit cell $α$-Mn system for the first time, including its charge and spin patterns and the canting of spins with res…
Cubic materials host high crystal symmetry and hence are not expected to support anisotropy in transport phenomena. In contrast to this common expectation, here we report an anomalous anisotropy of spin current can emerge in the (001) film of Mn${_3}$Pt, a noncollinear antiferromagnetic spin source with face-centered cubic structure. Such spin current anisotropy originates from the intertwined time reversal-odd ($T$-odd) and time reversal-even ($T$-even) spin Hall effects. Based on symmetry analyses and experimental characterizations of the current-induced spin torques in Mn${_3}$Pt-based hete…
When magnons and phonons, the fundamental quasiparticles of the solid, are coupled to one another, they form a new hybrid quasi-particle, leading to novel phenomena and interesting applications. Despite its wide-ranging importance, however, detailed experimental studies on the underlying Hamiltonian is rare for actual materials. Moreover, the anharmonicity of such magnetoelastic excitations remains largely unexplored although it is essential for a proper understanding of their diverse thermodynamic behaviour as well as intrinsic zero-temperature decay. Here we show that in noncollinear antifer…
In most conductors current flow perpendicular to electric field direction (Hall current) can be explained in terms of the Lorentz forces present when charged particles flow in an external magnetic field. However, as established in the very early work of Edwin Hall, ferromagnetic conductors such as Fe, Co, and Ni have an anomalous Hall conductivity contribution that cannot be attributed to Lorentz forces and therefore survives in the absence of a magnetic field. Although the anomalous Hall effect is experimentally strong, it has stood alone among metallic transport effects for much of the last …
Antiferromagnetic spintronics is one of the leading candidates for next-generation electronics. Among abundant antiferromagnets, noncollinear antiferromagnets are promising for achieving practical applications due to coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic merits. In this perspective, we briefly review the recent progress in the emerging noncollinear antiferromagnetic spintronics from fundamental physics to device applications. Current challenges and future research directions for this field are also discussed.
The antiferromagnet Mn$_5$Si$_3$ has recently attracted attention because a noncollinear spin arrangement has been shown to produce a topological anomalous Hall effect and an inverse magnetocaloric effect. Here we synthesize single crystals of Mn$_5$Si$_3$ using flux growth. We determine the phase diagram through magnetization and measure the magnetoresistance and the Hall effect. We find the collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnetic phases at low temperatures and, in addition, a third magnetic phase, in between the two antiferromagnetic phases which has ferromagnetic character. The latter …
Combining magnetism with band topology provides various novel phases that are otherwise impossible. Among several cases, noncollinear metallic antiferromagnets can reveal particularly rich topological physics due to their diverse magnetic ground states. However, there are only a few experimental studies due to the lack of suitable materials, especially with triangular lattice antiferromagnets. Here, we report that metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co1/3TaS2 exhibits a substantial anomalous Hall effect (AHE) related to its noncollinear magnetic order. Our first-principles calculations found t…
Noncollinear antiferromagnets (AFMs) have recently attracted a lot of attention owing to the potential emergence of exotic spin orders on geometrically frustrated lattices, which can be characterized by corresponding spin chiralities. By performing first-principles density functional calculations together with group-theory analysis and tight-binding modelling, here we systematically study the spin-order dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and magneto-optical effect (MOE) in representative noncollinear AFMs Mn$_{3}X$N ($X$ = Ga, Zn, Ag, and Ni). The symmetry-related tensor shape of the intrin…
A magnon Nernst effect, an antiferromagnetic analogue of the magnon Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulators, has been studied experimentally for a layered antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3 in contact with two Pt strips. Thermoelectric voltage in the Pt strips grown on MnPS3 single crystals exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence at low temperatures, which cannot be explained by electronic origins in Pt but can be ascribed to the inverse spin Hall voltage induced by a magnon Nernst effect. Control of antiferromagnetic domains in the MnPS3 crystal by magnetoelectric cooling is found to mod…
Predictions of the anisotropic magnetic susceptibility chi below the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering temperatures TN of local moment Heisenberg AFMs have been made previously using molecular field theory (MFT) but are very limited in their applicability. Here a MFT calculation of chi(T<=TN) is presented for a wide variety of collinear and noncollinear Heisenberg AFMs containing identical crystallographically equivalent spins without recourse to magnetic sublattices. The results are expressed in terms of directly measurable experimental parameters and are fitted with no adjustable parameters t…
Antiferromagnets with tunable phase transitions are promising for future spintronics applications. We investigated spin-dependent transport properties of FeRh thin films, which show a temperature driven antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic phase transition. Epitaxial FeRh films grown on MgO (001) substrates exhibit a clear magnetic and electronic phase transition. By performing anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst effect measurements over a wide range of temperatures, we demonstrate that the thermally driven transition shows distinctly different transverse transport on both side of the phase tran…
The ac spin pumping of noncollinear antiferromagnets is theoretically investigated. Starting from an effective action description of the spin system, we derive the Onsager coefficients connecting the spin pumping and spin-transfer torque associated with the dynamics of the SO(3)-valued antiferromagnetic order parameter. Our theory is applied to a kagome antiferromagnet resonantly driven by a uniform external magnetic field. We demonstrate that the reactive (dissipative) spin-transfer torque parameter can be extracted from the pumped ac spin current in-phase (in quadrature) with the driving fie…
One of the main bottleneck issues for room-temperature antiferromagnetic spintronic devices is the small signal read-out owing to the limited anisotropic magnetoresistance in antiferromagnets. However, this could be overcome by either utilizing the Berry-curvature-induced anomalous Hall resistance in noncollinear antiferromagnets or establishing tunnel junction devices based on effective manipulation of antiferromagnetic spins. In this work, we demonstrate the giant piezoelectric strain control of the spin structure and the anomalous Hall resistance in a noncollinear antiferromagnetic metal - …
We report the growth of noncollinear antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mn$_3$Ni$_{0.35}$Cu$_{0.65}$N films and the orientation-dependent anomalous Hall effect (AHE) of (001) and (111) films due to nonzero Berry curvature. We found that post-annealing at 500$^\circ$C can significantly improve the AHE signals, though using the appropriate post-annealing conditions is important. The AHE and magnetization loops show sharp flipping at the coercive field in (111) films, while (001) films are hard to saturate by a magnetic field. The anomalous Hall conductivity of (111) films is an order of magnitude larger th…
Novel noncollinear antiferromagnets with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking, nontrivial band topology, and unconventional transport properties have received immense research interest over the past decade due to their rich physics and enormous promise in technological applications. One of the central focuses in this emerging field is exploring the relationship between the microscopic magnetic structure and exotic material properties. Here, the nanoscale imaging of both spin-orbit-torque-induced deterministic magnetic switching and chiral spin rotation in noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn…
$\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$ has recently been established as an intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator and predicted to be an ideal platform to realize quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulator and axion insulator states. We performed comprehensive studies on the structure, nontrivial surface state and magnetotransport properties of this material. Our results reveal an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect arising from a non-collinear spin structure for the magnetic field parallel to the $c$-axis. We also observed remarkable negative magnetoresistance under arbitrary field orientation below …
Based on first-principles calculations, we investigated the topological transport properties of Mn$_3$GaN with coplanar noncollinear magnetic structures. The intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity (IAHC) displays a significant dependence with respect to the in-plane magnetization direction between the $Γ_{5g}$ and $Γ_{4g}$ magnetic configurations, where large anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) can be induced by tailoring the magnetization direction. Moreover, we observed strong piezospintronic effect in Mn$_3$GaN, where large IAHC can be induced by moderate epitaxial strain. Symmetry analysis reveal…
Spin-polarized currents play a key role in spintronics. Recently, it has been found that antiferromagnets with a non-spin-degenerate band structure can efficiently spin-polarize electric currents, even though their net magnetization is zero. Among the antiferromagnetic metals with magnetic space group symmetry supporting this functionality, the noncollinear antiferromagnetic antiperovskites ANMn$_3$ (A = Ga, Ni, Sn, and Pt) are especially promising. This is due to their high Néel temperatures and a good lattice match to perovskite oxide substrates, offering possibilities of high structural qua…

These forefront studies are crucial for unraveling the underlying mechanisms at play, which may prove beneficial in designing cutting edge multifunctional materials for future applications. In this context, Mn5Si3 has regained scientific interest since it displays an unusual and complex ground state, which is considered to be the origin of the anomalous transport and thermodynamic properties that it exhibits. Here, we report the …
Magnon excitations in antiferromagnetic materials and their physical implications enable novel device concepts not available in ferromagnets, emerging as a new area of active research. A unique characteristic of antiferromagnetic magnons is the coexistence of opposite spin polarization, which mimics the electron spin in a variety of transport phenomena. Among them, the most prominent spin-contrasting phenomenon is the magnon spin Nernst effect (SNE), which refers to the generation of transverse pure magnon spin current through a longitudinal temperature gradient. We introduce selected recent p…
In a collinear antiferromagnet with easy-axis anisotropy, symmetry guarantees that the spin wave modes are doubly degenerate. The two modes carry opposite spin angular momentum and exhibit opposite chirality. Using a honeycomb antiferromagnet in the presence of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we show that a longitudinal temperature gradient can drive the two modes to opposite transverse directions, realizing a spin Nernst effect of magnons with vanishing thermal Hall current. We find that magnons around the Γ-point and the K-point contribute oppositely to the transverse spin transport, …
We propose a new type of spin-valley locking (SVL), named $\textit{C}$-paired SVL, in antiferromagnetic systems, which directly connects the spin/valley space with the real space, and hence enables both static and dynamical controls of spin and valley to realize a multifunctional antiferromagnetic material. The new emergent quantum degree of freedom in the $\textit{C}$-paired SVL is comprised of spin-polarized valleys related by a crystal symmetry instead of the time-reversal symmetry. Thus, both spin and valley can be accessed by simply breaking the corresponding crystal symmetry. Typically, …
Antiferromagnetic antiperovskites, of the form Mn$_3B$N ($B$ = Ni, Cu, Zn, Sn, Ir, and Pt), have shown an outstanding behavior in which, giant negative thermal expansion and chiral magnetic structures are intertwined. As such, aiming to shed light on the magnetostructural behavior, related to the magnetic ordering and structure of this type of materials, we studied by theoretical first-principles calculations the spin-phonon coupling in the Manganese-based antiperovskite Mn$_3$NiN, as a prototype in the Mn$_3B$N family. We found a strong spin-lattice coupling by means of the understanding of t…
Out-of-plane spin polarization σ_z has attracted increasing interests of researchers recently, due to its potential in high-density and low-power spintronic devices. Noncollinear antiferromagnet (AFM), which has unique 120° triangular spin configuration, has been discovered to possess σ_z. However, the physical origin of σ_z in noncollinear AFM is still not clear, and the external magnetic field-free switching of perpendicular magnetic layer using the corresponding σ_z has not been reported yet. Here, we use the cluster magnetic octupole in antiperovskite AFM Mn3SnN to demonstrate the generati…
