The late-time behaviour of the Einstein-dust system is well understood for homogeneous spacetimes. For the case of Bianchi I we have been able to show that the late-time behaviour of the Einstein-Vlasov system is well approximated by the Einstein-dust system assuming that one is close to the unique stationary solution which is the attractor of the Einstein-dust system.
Using the methods developed for different Bianchi class A cosmological models we treat the simplest Bianchi class B model, namely Bianchi type V. The future non-linear stability for solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system is demonstrated and it is shown that these solutions are asymptotically stable to the Milne solution. Within the isotropic solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system the spatially flat Friedmann solution is unstable within this class, and expanding models tend also to the Milne solution.
Using the methods developed for the Bianchi I case we have shown that a boostrap argument is also suitable to treat the future non-linear stability for reflection symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system of Bianchi types II and VI$_0$. These solutions are asymptotic to the Collins-Stewart solution with dust and the Ellis-MacCallum solution respectively. We have thus generalized the results obtained by Rendall and Uggla in the case of locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi II spacetimes to the reflection symmetric case. However we needed to assume small data. For Bianchi VI$_0$ there i…
We investigate the dynamics of spatially homogeneous solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov equations with Bianchi type I symmetry by using dynamical systems methods. All models are forever expanding and isotropize toward the future; toward the past there exists a singularity. We identify and describe all possible past asymptotic states; in particular, on the past attractor set we establish the existence of a heteroclinic network, which is a new type of feature in general relativity. This illustrates among other things that Vlasov matter can lead to quite different dynamics of cosmological models as…
The dynamics of solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system with Bianchi I symmetry is discussed in the case of massive or massless particles. It is shown that in the case of massive particles the solutions are asymptotic to isotropic dust solutions at late times. The initial singularity is more difficult to analyse. It is shown that the asymptotic behaviour there must be one of a small set of possibilities but it is not clear whether all of these possibilities are realized. One solution is exhibited in the case of massless particles which behaves quite differently near the singularity from any Bi…
In a recent paper arXiv:1208.4231 we have treated the future non-linear stability for reflection symmetric solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov system of Bianchi types II and VI$_0$. We have been able now to remove the reflection symmetry assumption, thus treating the non-diagonal case. Apart from the increasing complexity the methods have been essentially the same as in the diagonal case, showing that they are thus quite powerful. Here the challenge was to put the equations in a form that permits the use of the previous results. We are able to conclude that after a possible basis change the futur…
We analyze the dynamics of a class of cosmological solutions of the Einstein-Vlasov equations. These equations describe an ensemble of collisionless particles (which represent galaxies or clusters of galaxies) that interact gravitatively through Einstein's equations of general relativity. The cosmological models we consider are spatially homogeneous, of Bianchi type IX, and locally rotationally symmetric (LRS). We prove that generic solutions exhibit an oscillatory approach toward the singularities (the "big bang" in the past and the "big crunch" in the future); this is in contrast to the beha…
It is shown that the generalized Collins--Stewart radiation and Milne solutions are attractors of the massless Einstein--Vlasov system for Bianchi types II and V spacetimes, respectively. The proof is based on an energy method and bootstrap argument which are used to determine the decay rates of the perturbations away from the attractors.
The dynamics of the Einstein-Vlasov equations for a class of cosmological models with four Killing vectors is discussed in the case of massive particles. It is shown that in all models analysed the solutions with massive particles are asymptotic to solutions with massless particles at early times. It is also shown that in Bianchi types I and II the solutions with massive particles are asymptotic to dust solutions at late times. That Bianchi type III models are also asymptotic to dust solutions at late times is consistent with our results but is not established by them.
We introduce a new matter action principle, with a wide range of applicability, for the Vlasov equation in terms of a conjugate pair of functions. Here we apply this action principle to the study of matter in Bianchi cosmological models in general relativity. The Bianchi models are spatially-homogeneous solutions to the Einstein field equations, classified by the three-dimensional Lie algebra that describes the symmetry group of the model. The Einstein equations for these models reduce to a set of coupled ordinary differential equations. The class A Bianchi models admit a Hamiltonian formulati…
The dynamics of a class of cosmological models with collisionless matter and four Killing vectors is studied in detail and compared with that of corresponding perfect fluid models. In many cases it is possible to identify asymptotic states of the spacetimes near the singularity or in a phase of unlimited expansion. Bianchi type II models show oscillatory behaviour near the initial singularity which is, however, simpler than that of the mixmaster model.
We consider the late time behaviour of non-tilted perfect fluid Bianchi VII_0 models when the source is a radiation fluid, thereby completing the analysis of the Bianchi VII_0 models initiated by Wainwright et al in a recent paper. The models exhibit the phenomena of asymptotic self-similarity breaking and Weyl-curvature dominance at late times. The late time dynamics of the VII_0 perfect fluid models, and in particular that of the radiation fluid, is a prime example of the complexity inherent in the field equations of general relativity.
In this paper we give, for the first time, a complete description of the late-time evolution of non-tilted spatially homogeneous cosmologies of Bianchi type VIII. The source is assumed to be a perfect fluid with equation of state $p = (γ- 1)μ$, where $γ$ is a constant which satisfies $1 \leq γ\leq 2$. Using the orthonormal frame formalism and Hubble-normalized variables, we rigorously establish the limiting behaviour of the models at late times, and give asymptotic expansions for the key physical variables. The main result is that asymptotic self-similarity breaking occurs, and is accompanied …
A dynamical study of the generalised scalar-tensor theory in the empty Bianchi type I model is made. We use a method from which we derive the sign of the first and second derivatives of the metric functions and examine three different theories that can all tend towards relativistic behaviours at late time. We determine conditions so that the dynamic be in expansion and decelerated at late time.
Einstein Gravitational Field Equations (EFE) of Chaplygin gas dominated Bianchi-type models are obtained by using metric approximation. The solutions of equations for a special case, namely Bianchi I model which is a generalization of isotropic Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology, are obtained. The early and late behaviours of some kinematic parameters in model are presented in graphically.
We derive the late-time behaviour of tilted Bianchi VII_0 cosmologies with an irrotational radiation fluid as source, and give the asymptotic form of the general solution as $t \to +\infty$, making comparisons with the dust-filled models. At first sight the radiation-filled models appear to approximate the flat FL model at late times, since the Hubble-normalized shear and the tilt tend to zero and the density parameter tends to one. The Hubble-normalized Weyl curvature diverges, however, indicating that physically significant anisotropy remains. We also discuss the influence of a cosmological …
Bianchi type V viscous fluid cosmological model for barotropic fluid distribution with varying cosmological term $Λ$ is investigated. We have examined a cosmological scenario proposing a variation law for Hubble parameter $H$ in the background of homogeneous, anisotropic Bianchi type V space-time. The model isotropizes asymptotically and the presence of shear viscosity accelerates the isotropization. The model describes a unified expansion history of the universe indicating initial decelerating expansion and late time accelerating phase. Cosmological consequences of the model are also discusse…
We study the generalized scalar tensor theory with a potential in the Bianchi type I model by using the ADM formalism. We examine the conditions for the Universe to be in expansion, isotropic and with a positive potential at late time in the Brans-Dicke and Einstein frames. In particular, we analyse the two important cases where metric functions tend, in an asymptotic way, toward power or exponential laws in the Einstein frame.
We study the late time evolution of a class of exact anisotropic cosmological solutions of Einstein's equations, namely spatially homogeneous cosmologies of Bianchi type VII$_0$ with a perfect fluid source. We show that, in contrast to models of Bianchi type VII$_h$ which are asymptotically self-similar at late times, Bianchi VII$_0$ models undergo a complicated type of self-similarity breaking. This symmetry breaking affects the late time isotropization that occurs in these models in a significant way: if the equation of state parameter $γ$ satisfies $γ\leq 4/3$ the models isotropize as regar…
An LRS Bianchi I model is considered with constant deceleration parameter, $q=α-1$, where $α\geq0$ is a constant. The physical and kinematical behaviour of the models for $α=0$ and $α\neq0$ is studied in detail. The model with $α=0$ describes late time acceleration, but eternal inflation demands a violation of the NEC and WEC. The acceleration is caused by phantom matter which approaches a cosmological constant at late times. The solutions with a scalar field also show that the model is compatible with a phantom field only. A comparison with the observational outcomes indicates that the univer…
We look for necessary isotropisation conditions of Bianchi class $A$ models with curvature in presence of a massive and minimally coupled scalar field when a function $\ell$ of the scalar field tends to a constant, diverges monotonically or with sufficiently small oscillations. Isotropisation leads the metric functions to tend to a power or exponential law of the proper time $t$ and the potential respectively to vanish as $t^{-2}$ or to a constant. Moreover, isotropisation always requires late time accelerated expansion and flatness of the Universe.
In this work we investigate a model for the early Universe in a Bianchi type-I metric, where the sources of the gravitational field are a fermionic and a bosonic field, interacting through a Yukawa potential, following the standard model of elementary particles. It is shown that the fermionic field has a negative pressure, while the boson has a small positive pressure. The fermionic field is the responsible for an accelerated regime at early times, but since the total pressure tends to zero for large times, a transition to a decelerated regime occurs. Here the Yukawa potential answers for the …
We obtain a general exact solution of the Einstein field equations for the anisotropic Bianchi type I universes filled with an exponential-potential scalar field and study their dynamics. It is shown, in agreement with previous studies, that for a wide range of initial conditions the late-time behaviour of the models is that of a power-law inflating FRW universe. This property, does not hold, in contrast, when some degree of inhomogeneity is introduced, as discussed in our following paper II.
We investigate the future asymptotics of spatially homogeneous space-times with a positive cosmological constant by using and further developing geometric conformal methods in General Relativity. For a large class of source fields, including fluids with anisotropic stress, we prove that the space-times are future asymptotically simple and geometrically conformally regular. We use that result in order to show the global conformal regularity of the Einstein-Maxwell system as well as the Einstein-radiation, Einstein-dust, massless Einstein-Vlasov and particular Einstein-scalar field systems for B…
Within the scope of Bianchi type-VI cosmological model we study the role of spinor field in the evolution of the Universe. It is found that due to the spinor affine connections the energy-momentum tensor of the spinor field possesses non-diagonal components. The non-triviality of non-diagonal components of the energy-momentum tensor imposes some severe restrictions either on the spinor field or on the metric functions or on both of them. But unlike in cases of Bianchi type-I or $VI_0$, in case of Bianchi type-VI model it does not lead to the elimination of spinor field nonlinearity or mass ter…
In this paper we give, for the first time, a qualitative description of the asymptotic dynamics of a class of non-tilted spatially homogeneous (SH) cosmologies, the so-called exceptional Bianchi cosmologies, which are of Bianchi type VI$_{-1/9}$. This class is of interest for two reasons. Firstly, it is generic within the class of non-tilted SH cosmologies, being of the same generality as the models of Bianchi types VIII and IX. Secondly, it is the SH limit of a generic class of spatially inhomogeneous $G_{2}$ cosmologies. Using the orthonormal frame formalism and Hubble-normalized variables, …
The behaviour of expanding cosmological models with collisionless matter and a positive cosmological constant is analysed. It is shown that under the assumption of plane or hyperbolic symmetry the area radius goes to infinity, the spacetimes are future geodesically complete, and the expansion becomes isotropic and exponential at late times. This proves a form of the cosmic no hair theorem in this class of spacetimes.
In this paper we give, for the first time, a complete description of the dynamics of tilted spatially homogeneous cosmologies of Bianchi type II. The source is assumed to be a perfect fluid with equation of state $p = (γ-1) μ$, where $γ$ is a constant. We show that unless the perfect fluid is stiff, the tilt destabilizes the Kasner solutions, leading to a Mixmaster-like initial singularity, with the tilt being dynamically significant. At late times the tilt becomes dynamically negligible unless the equation of state parameter satisfies $γ> {10/7}$. We also find that the tilt does not destabili…
The results on local existence and continuation criteria obtained by G. Rein in [4] are extended to the case with a non-zero cosmological constant. It is also shown that for the spherically symmetric case and a positive cosmological constant there is a large class of initial data with global existence and inflationary asymptotics in the future as in the case of plane or hyperbolic symmetry treated in [7]. Furthermore we analyze the behaviour of the energy-momentum tensor at late times.
We apply the dynamical systems approach to ever-expanding Bianchi type VIII cosmologies filled with a tilted $γ$-fluid undergoing velocity diffusion on a scalar field. We determine the future attractors and investigate the late-time behaviour of the models. We find that at late times the normalized energy density $Ω$ tends to zero, while the scalar potential $Φ$ approaches 1 and dominates the evolution. Moreover, we demonstrate that in presence of diffusion fluids with $γ<3/2$, which includes physically important cases of dust $(γ=1)$ and radiation $(γ=4/3)$, are asymptotically non-tilted; the…
We use the dynamical systems approach to investigate the Bianchi type VIII models with a tilted $γ$-law perfect fluid. We introduce expansion-normalised variables and investigate the late-time asymptotic behaviour of the models and determine the late-time asymptotic states. For the Bianchi type VIII models the state space is unbounded and consequently, for all non-inflationary perfect fluids, one of the curvature variables grows without bound. Moreover, we show that for fluids stiffer than dust ($1<γ<2$), the fluid will in general tend towards a state of extreme tilt. For dust ($γ=1$), or for …
We use expansion-normalised variables to investigate the Bianchi type VII$_0$ model with a tilted $γ$-law perfect fluid. We emphasize the late-time asymptotic dynamical behaviour of the models and determine their asymptotic states. Unlike the other Bianchi models of solvable type, the type VII$_0$ state space is unbounded. Consequently we show that, for a general non-inflationary perfect fluid, one of the curvature variables diverges at late times, which implies that the type VII$_0$ model is not asymptotically self-similar to the future. Regarding the tilt velocity, we show that for fluids wi…
We study tilted perfect fluid cosmological models with a constant equation of state parameter in spatially homogeneous models of Bianchi type VI$_{-1/9}$ using dynamical systems methods and numerical simulations. We study models with and without vorticity, with an emphasis on their future asymptotic evolution. We show that for models with vorticity there exists, in a small region of parameter space, a closed curve acting as the attractor.
In this paper we study the future global existence and late-time behaviour of the Einstein-Boltzmann system with Bianchi I symmetry and a positive cosmological constant $Λ>0$. For the Boltzmann equation we consider the scattering kernel of Israel particles which are the relativistic counterpart of Maxwellian particles. Under a smallness assumption on initial data in a suitable norm we show that solutions exist globally in time and isotropize at late times.
We study the evolution of Bianchi-I space-times filled with a global unidirectional electromagnetic field $F_{mn}$ interacting with a massless scalar dilatonic field according to the law Ψ(ϕ) F^{mn} F_{mn} where Ψ(ϕ) > 0 is an arbitrary function. A qualitative study, among other results, shows that (i) the volume factor always evolves monotonically, (ii) there exist models becoming isotropic at late times and (iii) the expansion generically starts from a singularity but there can be special models starting from a Killing horizon preceded by a static stage. All these features are confirmed for …
Assuming that the space-time is close to isotropic in the sense that the shear parameter is small and that the maximal velocity of the particles is bounded, we have been able to show that for non-diagonal Bianchi I-symmetric spacetimes with collisionless matter the asymptotic behaviour at late times is close to the special case of dust. We also have been able to show that all the Kasner exponents converge to 1/3 and an asymptotic expression for the induced metric has been obtained. The key was a bootstrap argument.
We study tilted perfect fluid cosmological models with a constant equation of state parameter in spatially homogeneous models of Bianchi type VI_h using dynamical systems methods and numerical experimentation, with an emphasis on their future asymptotic evolution. We determine all of the equilibrium points of the type VI_h state space (which correspond to exact self-similar solutions of the Einstein equations, some of which are new), and their stability is investigated. We find that there are vacuum plane-wave solutions that act as future attractors. In the parameter space, a `loophole' is sho…
We show that the homogeneous, massless Einstein-Vlasov system with toroidal spatial topology and diagonal Bianchi type I symmetry for initial data close to isotropic data isotropizes towards the future and in particular asymptotes to a radiative Einstein-deSitter model. We use an energy method to obtain quantitative estimates on the rate of isotropization in this class of models.
In this paper we study the Einstein-Boltzmann system for Israel particles with a positive cosmological constant. We consider spatially homogeneous solutions of Bianchi types except IX and obtain future global existence and asymptotic behaviour of solutions to the Einstein-Boltzmann system. The result shows that the solutions converge to the de Sitter solution at late times.
An LRS Bianchi-I space-time model is studied with constant Hubble parameter in $f(R,T)=R+2λT$ gravity. Although a single (primary) matter source is considered, an additional matter appears due to the coupling between matter and $f(R,T)$ gravity. The constraints are obtained for a realistic cosmological scenario, i.e., one obeying the null and weak energy conditions. The solutions are also extended to the case of a scalar field (normal or phantom) model, and it is found that the model is consistent with a phantom scalar field only. The coupled matter also acts as phantom matter. The study shows…
We study the late-time behaviour of tilted perfect fluid Bianchi type III models using a dynamical systems approach. We consider models with dust, and perfect fluids stiffer than dust, and eludicate the late-time behaviour by studying the centre manifold which dominates the behaviour of the model at late times. In the dust case, this centre manifold is 3-dimensional and can be considered as a double bifurcation as the 2 parameters ($h$ and $γ$) of the type VI$_h$ model are varied. We calculate the decay rates and show that for dust or stiffer the models approach a vacuum spacetime, however, it…
We consider a rather simple method for the description of the Big Bang - Big Crunch cosmological singularity crossing. For the flat Friedmann universe this method gives the same results as more complicated methods, using Weyl symmetry or the transitions between the Jordan and Einstein frames. It is then easily generalized for the case of a Bianchi-I anisotropic universe. We also present early-time and late-time asymptotic solutions for a Bianchi-I universe, filled with a conformally coupled massless scalar field.
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and a matter fluid with a barotropic Equation of State (EoS) with barotropic index $γ$ for Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi III metric and open Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric are investigated. Methods from the theory of averaging of nonlinear dynamical systems are used to prove that time-dependent systems and their corresponding time-averaged versions have the same late-time dynamics. Therefore, simple time-averaged systems determine the future asymptotic behavior. Depending on values of barotropic in…
We investigate the three types of class B Bianchi cosmologies filled with a tilted perfect fluid undergoing velocity diffusion in a scalar field background. We consider the two most importantcases: dust and radiation. A complete numerical integration of the Einstein field equations coupled with the diffusion equations is done to demonstrate how the presence of diffusion can affect the dynamics of cosmological evolution, where the most attention is paid to changes to the late-time behaviour. We show that aside from quantitative effects, diffusion can result in significant qualitative difference…
We use a dynamical systems approach to analyse the tilting spatially homogeneous Bianchi models of solvable type (e.g., types VI$_h$ and VII$_h$) with a perfect fluid and a linear barotropic $γ$-law equation of state. In particular, we study the late-time behaviour of tilted Bianchi models, with an emphasis on the existence of equilibrium points and their stability properties. We briefly discuss the tilting Bianchi type V models and the late-time asymptotic behaviour of irrotational Bianchi VII$_0$ models. We prove the important result that for non-inflationary Bianchi type VII$_h$ models vacu…
Using dynamical systems theory and a detailed numerical analysis, the late-time behaviour of tilting perfect fluid Bianchi models of types IV and VII$_h$ are investigated. In particular, vacuum plane-wave spacetimes are studied and the important result that the only future attracting equilibrium points for non-inflationary fluids are the plane-wave solutions in Bianchi type VII$_h$ models is discussed. A tiny region of parameter space (the loophole) in the Bianchi type IV model is shown to contain a closed orbit which is found to act as an attractor (the Mussel attractor). From an extensive nu…
A plane symmetric Bianchi I model is considered with constant deceleration parameter, $q=α-1$, where $α\geq0$. The model with $α=0$ violates the NEC throughout the evolution, and hence provides a physically unrealistic scenario. The model with $α\neq0$ obeys the NEC and WEC at late times, which shows that the models in this case can render a physical realistic cosmological scenario, though for a restricted period of time. It is also shown that the physical and kinematical behaviour of both models remain similar to an LRS Bianchi I model.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the Bianchi type VI$_0$ universes with a tilted $γ$-law perfect fluid. The late-time attractors are found for the full 7-dimensional state space and for several interesting invariant subspaces. In particular, it is found that for the particular value of the equation of state parameter, $γ=6/5$, there exists a bifurcation line which signals a transition of stability between a non-tilted equilibrium point to an extremely tilted equilibrium point. The initial singular regime is also discussed and we argue that the initial behaviour is chaotic for $γ<2$.
This paper is devoted to investigate the anisotropic locally rotationally symmetric (LRS) Bianchi type-I space-time in the context of the recently proposed $f(Q)$ gravity in which $Q$ is the non-metricity scalar. For this purpose, we consider a linear form of $f\left( Q\right) $ gravity model, specifically, $f\left( Q\right) =αQ+β$, where $α$ and $% β$ are free parameters and we analyzed the exact solutions of LRS Bianchi type-I space-time. The modified Friedmann equations are solved by presuming an expansion scalar $θ\left( t\right) $ is proportional to the shear scalar $σ\left( t\right) $ wh…
Due to the numerical complexities of studying evolution in an anisotropic quantum spacetime, in comparison to the isotropic models, the physics of loop quantized anisotropic models has remained largely unexplored. In particular, robustness of bounce and the validity of effective dynamics have so far not been established. Our analysis fills these gaps for the case of vacuum Bianchi-I spacetime. To efficiently solve the quantum Hamiltonian constraint we perform an implementation of the Cactus framework which is conventionally used for applications in numerical relativity. Using high performance …
In this work we construct an effective four-dimensional model by compactifying a ten-dimensional theory of gravity coupled with a real scalar dilaton field on a time-dependent torus. This approach is applied to anisotropic cosmological Bianchi type I model for which we study the classical coupling of the anisotropic scale factors with the two real scalar moduli produced by the compactification process. Under this approach, we present an isotropization mechanism for the Bianchi I cosmological model through the analysis of the ratio between the anisotropic parameters and the volume of the Univer…
Exact electromagnetic wave solutions to Maxwell equations on anisotropic Bianchi I cosmological spacetime backgrounds are studied. The waves evolving on Bianchi I spacetimes exhibit birefringence (associated to linear polarization) and dispersion. The particular case of a vacuum--dominated anisotropic Universe, which reproduces a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe (for late times) while for earlier times it matches a Kasner Universe, is studied. The electromagnetic waves do not, in general, follow null geodesics. This produces a modification of the cosmological redshift, which is now dependen…
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and a matter fluid with a barotropic Equation of State (EoS) with barotropic index $γ$ for the Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi I and flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics are investigated. Methods from the theory of averaging of nonlinear dynamical systems are used to prove that time-dependent systems and their corresponding time-averaged versions have the same late-time dynamics. Therefore, the simplest time-averaged system determines the future asymptotic behavior. Depending on the values of $γ$, th…
