In recent years there has been a considerable increase in the publishing of textbooks and monographs covering what was formerly known as random or irregular deterministic motion, now named by the more fashionable term of deterministic chaos. There is still substantial interest in a matter that is included in many graduate and even undergraduate courses on classical mechanics. Based on the Hamiltonian formalism, the main objective of this article is to provide, from the physicist's point of view, an overall and intuitive review of this broad subject (with some emphasis on the KAM theorem and the stability of planetary motions) which may be useful to both students and instructors.
A recent paper by Castagnino, Giacomini and Lara concludes that there is no chaos in a conformally coupled closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe, which is in apparent contradiction with previous works. We point out that although nonchaotic the quoted system is nonintegrable.
We study how perturbations affect dynamics of integrable many-body quantum systems, causing transition from integrability to chaos. Looking at spin transport in the Heisenberg chain with impurities we find that in the thermodynamic limit transport gets diffusive already at an infinitesimal perturbation. Small extensive perturbations therefore cause an immediate transition from integrability to chaos. Nevertheless, there is a remnant of integrability encoded in the dependence of the diffusion constant on the impurity density, namely, at small densities it is proportional to the square root of t…
We study spin glass clusters ("shards") in a random transverse magnetic field, and determine the regime where quantum chaos and random matrix level statistics emerge from the integrable limits of weak and strong field. Relations with quantum phase transition are also discussed.
We show that certain classical string configurations in AdS_5 x T^{1,1} are chaotic. This answers the question of integrability of string on such backgrounds in the negative. We consider a string localized in the center of AdS_5 that winds around two circles of T^{1,1}. The corresponding dynamical system is equivalent to two coupled gravitational pendula and allows a very intuitive understanding. We find conclusive evidence of chaotic behavior by systematically analyzing the workings of the KAM theorem. We also show that the largest Lyapunov exponent is positive.
This thesis presents two descriptions of complexity in dynamical systems. The algebraic approach deals with the differential Galois group theory and its restrictions on integrability. The geometric part is a formulation of dynamics in the language of differential geometry with particular application to Lyapunov exponents and variational equations. The algorithm for calculating the Lyapunov spectrum is illustrated with three examples.
The motion of a stellar compact object around a supermassive black hole can be approximated by the motion of a spinning test particle. The equations of motion describing such systems are in general non-integrable, and therefore, chaotic motion should be expected. This article discusses the integrability issue of the spinning particle for the cases of Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetime, and then it focuses on a canonical Hamiltonian formalism where the spin of the particle is included only up to the linear order.
We study (non-)integrability and the presence of chaos in gravity dual backgrounds of strongly coupled gauge theories with unquenched flavor, specifically of the four-dimensional N=2 super Yang-Mills theory and the three-dimensional ABJM theory. By examining string motion on the geometries corresponding to backreacted D3/D7 and D2/D6 systems, we show that integrable theories with quenched flavor become non-integrable when the virtual quark loops are taken into account. For the string solutions in the backreacted D3/D7 system, we compute the leading Lyapunov exponent which turns out to saturate…
The dynamics of open quantum systems can be described by a Liouvillian, which in the Markovian approximation fulfills the Lindblad master equation. We present a family of integrable many-body Liouvillians based on Richardson-Gaudin models with a complex structure of the jump operators. Making use of this new region of integrability, we study the transition to chaos in terms of a two-parameter Liouvillian. The transition is characterized by the spectral statistics of the complex eigenvalues of the Liouvillian operators using the nearest neighbor spacing distribution and by the ratios between ei…
Out-of-time-order correlators (OTOCs) have been proposed as a probe of chaos in quantum mechanics, on the basis of their short-time exponential growth found in some particular set-ups. However, it has been seen that this behavior is not universal. Therefore, we query other quantum chaos manifestations arising from the OTOCs and we thus study their long-time behavior in systems of completely different nature: quantum maps, which are the simplest chaotic one-body system and spin chains, which are many-body systems without a classical limit. It is shown that studying the long-time regime of the O…
It is proved that the motion of a charge particle on a hyperbolic oriented two-dimensional surface in a magnetic field given by the volume form of the hyperbolic metric is completely integrable on the energy levels E < 1/2 in terms of real-analytic integrals. However it was known that on the level E=1/2 every trajectory is transitive and the restrictions of this flow onto the levels E>1/2 are Anosov flows

Geodesic dynamics is regular in the fields of isolated stationary black holes. However, due to the presence of unstable periodic orbits, it easily becomes chaotic under various perturbations. Here we examine what amount of chaoticity is induced in Schwarzschild space-time by a presence of an additional source. Following astrophysical motivation, we specifically consider thin rings or discs lying symmetrically around the hole, and describe the total field in terms of exact static and axially symmetric solutions of Einstein's equations. The growth of chaos in time-like geodesic motion is illustr…

We derive and analyze a three dimensional model of a figure skater. We model the skater as a three-dimensional body moving in space subject to a non-holonomic constraint enforcing movement along the skate's direction and holonomic constraints of continuous contact with ice and pitch constancy of the skate. For a static (non-articulated) skater, we show that the system is integrable if and only if the projection of the center of mass on skate's direction coincides with the contact point with ice and some mild (and realistic) assumptions on the directions of inertia's axes. The integrability is …
It is known that classical string dynamics in pure AdS_5\times S^5 is integrable and plays an important role in solvability. This is a deep and central issue in holography. Here we investigate similar classical integrability for a more realistic confining background and provide a negative answer. The dynamics of a class of simple string configurations in AdS soliton background can be mapped to the dynamics of a set of non-linearly coupled oscillators. In a suitable limit of small fluctuations we discuss a quasi-periodic analytic solution of the system. However numerics indicates chaotic behavi…
We study the transition between integrable and chaotic behaviour in dissipative open quantum systems, exemplified by a boundary driven quantum spin-chain. The repulsion between the complex eigenvalues of the corresponding Liouville operator in radial distance $s$ is used as a universal measure. The corresponding level spacing distribution is well fitted by that of a static two-dimensional Coulomb gas with harmonic potential at inverse temperature $β\in[0,2]$. Here, $β=0$ yields the two-dimensional Poisson distribution, matching the integrable limit of the system, and $β=2$ equals the distribut…

We continue the study of time-like geodesic dynamics in exact static, axially and reflection symmetric space-times describing the fields of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by thin discs or rings. In the previous paper, the rise (and decline) of geodesic chaos with ring/disc mass and position and with test particle energy was revealed on Poincaré sections, on time series of position or velocity and their power spectra, and on time evolution of the orbital `latitudinal action'. In agreement with the KAM theory of nearly integrable dynamical systems and with the results observed in similar …
Energy spectra of a particle with mass $m$ and charge $e$ in the cubic Aharonov-Bohm billiard containing around $10^4$ consecutive levels starting from the ground state have been analysed. The cubic Aharonov-Bohm billiard is a plane billiard defined by the cubic conformal mapping of the unit disc pervaded by a point magnetic flux through the origin perpendicular to the plane of the billiard. The magnetic flux does not influence the classical dynamics, but breaks the antiunitary symmetry in the system, which affects the statistics of energy levels. By varying the shape parameter $\lam$ the clas…

We study a one-dimensional gas of hard rods trapped in a harmonic potential, which breaks integrability of the hard-rod interaction in a non-uniform way. We explore the consequences of such broken integrability for the dynamics of a large number of particles and find three distinct regimes: initial, chaotic, and stationary. The initial regime is captured by an evolution equation for the phase-space distribution function. For any finite number of particles, this hydrodynamics breaks down and the dynamics become chaotic after a characteristic time scale determined by the inter-particle distance …
An elementary application of Algorithmic Complexity Theory to the polygonal approximations of curved billiards-integrable and chaotic-unveils the equivalence of this problem to the procedure of quantization of classical systems: the scaling relations for the average complexity of symbolic trajectories are formally the same as those governing the semi-classical limit of quantum systems. Two cases-the circle, and the stadium-are examined in detail, and are presented as paradigms.
In this paper we deal with the well-known nonlinear Lorenz system that describes the deterministic chaos phenomenon. We consider an interesting problem with time-varying phenomena in quantum optics. Then we establish from the motion equations the passage to the Lorenz system. Furthermore, we show that the reduction to the third order non linear equation can be performed. Therefore, the obtained differential equation can be analytically solved in some special cases and transformed to Abel, Dufing, Painlevé and generalized Emden-Fowler equations. So, a motivating technique that permitted a compl…
It is traditionally believed that the macroscopic randomness has nothing to do with the micro-level uncertainty. Besides, the sensitive dependence on initial condition (SDIC) of Lorenz chaos has never been considered together with the so-called continuum-assumption of fluid (on which Lorenz equations are based), from physical and statistic viewpoints. A very fine numerical technique (Liao, 2009) with negligible truncation and round-off errors, called here the "clean numerical simulation" (CNS), is applied to investigate the propagation of the micro-level unavoidable uncertain fluctuation (caus…
We continue the study of time-like geodesic dynamics in exact static, axially and reflection symmetric space-times describing the fields of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by thin discs or rings. In the first paper of this series, the rise (and decline) of geodesic chaos with ring/disc mass and position and with test particle energy was revealed on Poincaré sections and on time series of position or velocity and their power spectra. In the second paper we compared these results with those obtained by two recurrence methods, focusing on "sticky" orbits whose different parts show different…
The non-integrability of quantum systems, often associated with chaotic behavior, is a concept typically applied to cases with a high-dimensional Hilbert space Among different indicators signaling this behavior, the study of the long-time oscillations of the out-of-time-ordered correlator (OTOC) appears as a versatile tool, that can be adapted to the case of systems with a small number of degrees of freedom. Using such an approach, we consider the oscillations observed after the scrambling time in the measurement of OTOCs of local operators for an Ising spin chain on a nuclear magnetic resonan…
First-order integrability-breaking phase transitions in dynamical systems

The dynamical system studied in previous papers of this series, namely a bound time-like geodesic motion in the exact static and axially symmetric space-time of an (originally) Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin disc or ring, is considered to test whether the often employed "pseudo-Newtonian" approach (resorting to Newtonian dynamics in gravitational potentials modified to mimic the black-hole field) can reproduce phase-space properties observed in the relativistic treatment. By plotting Poincaré surfaces of section and using two recurrence methods for similar situations as in the r…
There is a long tradition of studying chaotic trajectories in systems whose integrability is broken by means of an external perturbation. Here we explore a different route to chaos, in the dynamics of extended bodies, which arises due to finite-size corrections to the otherwise integrable motion of a test particle. We find that cyclic changes in the overall shape of the body may lead to the onset of chaos. This is applied to the Duffing and Yukawa potentials. For Kepler's potential, periodic deviations from spherical symmetry give rise to chaotic regions around the unperturbed parabolic orbit.
We consider two special types of double pendula, with the motion of masses restricted to various surfaces. In order to get quick insight into the dynamics of the considered systems the Poincaré cross sections as well as bifurcation diagrams have been used. The numerical computations show that both models are chaotic which suggest that they are not integrable. We give an analytic proof of this fact checking the properties of the differential Galois group of the system's variational equations along a particular non-equilibrium solution.

In classical statistical mechanics there is a clear correlation between relaxation to equilibrium and chaos. In contrast, for isolated quantum systems this relation is -- to say the least -- fuzzy. In this work we try to unveil the intricate relation between the relaxation process and the transition from integrability to chaos. We study the approach to equilibrium in two different many body quantum systems that can be parametrically tuned from regular to chaotic. We show that a universal relation between relaxation and delocalization of the initial state in the perturbed basis can be establish…
A necessary condition for the emergence of chaos is given. It is well known that the emergence of chaos requires a positive exponent which entails diverging trajectories. Here we show that this is not enough. An additional necessary condition for the emergence of chaos in the region where the trajectory of the system goes through, is that the product of the maximal positive exponent times the duration in which the system configuration point stays in the unstable region should exceed unity. We give a theoretical analysis justifying this result and a few examples.
