We study (non-)integrability and the presence of chaos in gravity dual backgrounds of strongly coupled gauge theories with unquenched flavor, specifically of the four-dimensional N=2 super Yang-Mills theory and the three-dimensional ABJM theory. By examining string motion on the geometries corresponding to backreacted D3/D7 and D2/D6 systems, we show that integrable theories with quenched flavor become non-integrable when the virtual quark loops are taken into account. For the string solutions in the backreacted D3/D7 system, we compute the leading Lyapunov exponent which turns out to saturate to a positive value as the number of flavors increases. The exponent depends very weakly on the number of flavors when they approach the number of colors. This suggests that once a particular flavor number in the theory is reached, a further increase does not lead to more severe chaotic phenomena, implying certain saturation effects on chaos.
We show that certain classical string configurations in AdS_5 x T^{1,1} are chaotic. This answers the question of integrability of string on such backgrounds in the negative. We consider a string localized in the center of AdS_5 that winds around two circles of T^{1,1}. The corresponding dynamical system is equivalent to two coupled gravitational pendula and allows a very intuitive understanding. We find conclusive evidence of chaotic behavior by systematically analyzing the workings of the KAM theorem. We also show that the largest Lyapunov exponent is positive.
We apply a notion of quantum complexity, called "Krylov complexity", to study the evolution of systems from integrability to chaos. For this purpose we investigate the integrable XXZ spin chain, enriched with an integrability breaking deformation that allows one to interpolate between integrable and chaotic behavior. K-complexity can act as a probe of the integrable or chaotic nature of the underlying system via its late-time saturation value that is suppressed in the integrable phase and increases as the system is driven to the chaotic phase. We furthermore ascribe the (under-)saturation of t…
It is known that classical string dynamics in pure AdS_5\times S^5 is integrable and plays an important role in solvability. This is a deep and central issue in holography. Here we investigate similar classical integrability for a more realistic confining background and provide a negative answer. The dynamics of a class of simple string configurations in AdS soliton background can be mapped to the dynamics of a set of non-linearly coupled oscillators. In a suitable limit of small fluctuations we discuss a quasi-periodic analytic solution of the system. However numerics indicates chaotic behavi…
Integrable quantum systems of finite size are generically robust against weak enough integrability-breaking perturbations, but become quantum chaotic and thermalizing if the integrability-breaking is strong enough. We argue that the onset of quantum chaos can be described as a Fock-space delocalization process, with the eigenstates of the integrable system being taken as the "Fock states". The integrability-breaking perturbation introduces hopping in this Fock space, and chaos sets in when this hopping delocalizes the many-body eigenstates in this space. Depending on the range of the dominant …

We explore the \emph{Liouvillian} non-integrability criteria for long quiver gauge theories those preserve $ \mathcal{N}=1 $ SUSY in $ 5d $. We probe type IIB solutions with (an $ AdS_6 $ factor) semi-classical strings which capture the strong coupling dynamics of $ \mathcal{N}=1 $ SCFTs in $ 5d $. Our analysis reveals an underlying non-integrable structure within some sub-sector of these $ 5d $ SCFTs. To solidify our claim, we complement our analytic results through numerics. We estimate various chaos indicators for the phase space which confirm the onset of a \emph{chaotic} motion for these …

We construct and study a chiral Sachdev-Ye (SY) model consisting of $N$ chiral SU$(M)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten (WZW) models with current-current interactions among each other, which generalizes the 0+1d quantum chaotic SY spin model into 1+1d chiral system with anyon excitations. Each WZW model hosts Abelian anyons as charge excitations, and may arise as the chiral edge theory of 2+1d gapped topological phases. We solve the chiral SY model in two limits which show distinct quantum dynamics. The first limit is the case with uniform interactions at any integers $N$ and $M$, which is integrable and …
Motivated by recent studies related to integrability of string motion in various backgrounds via analytical and numerical procedures, we discuss these procedures for a well known integrable string background $(AdS_5\times S^5)_η$. We start by revisiting conclusions from earlier studies on string motion in $(\mathbb{R}\times S^3)_η$ and $(AdS_3)_η$ and then move on to more complex problems of $(\mathbb{R}\times S^5)_η$ and $(AdS_5)_η$. Discussing both analytically and numerically, we deduce that while $(AdS_5)_η$ strings do not encounter any irregular trajectories, string motion in the deformed…

In this work we study various aspects of six-dimensional ${\cal N}=(1,0)$ SCFTs. We consider the construction of their string duals in Massive IIA and discuss some observables in given examples. We study the dynamics of string solitons wrapping and rotating on the Massive IIA background and show that the associated Hamiltonian system is both non-integrable and chaotic, implying the non-integrability of the dual CFT. Our procedure is analytic, using well developed mathematical techniques, and numerical, by the explicit calculation of power spectra, Lyapunov coefficients and Poincaré sections.
We show that the $AdS_5 \times L^{a,b,c}$ solution in type IIB theory is non-integrable. To do so, we consider a string embedding and study its fluctuations which do not admit Liouville integrable solutions. We, also, perform a numerical analysis to study the time evolution of the string and compute the largest Lyapunov exponent. This analysis indicates that the string motion is chaotic. Finally, we consider the point-like limit of the string that corresponds to BPS mesons of the quiver theory.
We consider a circular string in $\hatγ$ deformed $AdS_5 \times T^{1,1}$ which is localized in the center of $AdS_5$ and winds around the two circles of deformed $T^{1,1}$. We observe chaos in the phase space of the circular string implying non-integrability of string dynamics. The chaotic behaviour in phase space is controlled by energy as well as the deforming parameter $\hatγ$. We further show that the point like object exhibits non-chaotic behaviour. Finally we calculate the Lyapunov exponent for both extended and point like object in support of our first result.

Recently, Arutyunov, Bassi and Lacroix have shown that 2D non-linear sigma model with a deformed $T^{1,1}$ background is classically integrable [arXiv:2010.05573 [hep-th]]. This background includes a Kalb-Ramond two-form with a critical value. Then the sigma model has been conjectured to be non-integrable when the two-form is off critical. We confirm this conjecure by explicitly presenting classical chaos. With a winding string ansatz, the system is reduced to a dynamical system described by a set of ordinary differential equations. Then we find classical chaos, which indicates non-integrabili…
In this manuscript we study Liouvillian non-integrability of strings in $AdS_{6}\times S^{2}\timesΣ$ background. We consider soliton strings and look for simple solutions in order to reduce the equations to only one linear second order differential equation called Normal Variation Equation (NVE). We study truncations in $η$ and $σ$ variables showing their applicability or not to catch (non) integrability of models. With this technique we are able to study many recent cases considered in the literature: the abelian and non-abelian T-duals, the $(p,q)$-5-brane system, the T$_{N}$, $+_{MN}$ theor…
The geodesic equation in the five-dimensional singly rotating black ring is non-integrable unlike the case of the Myers-Perry black hole. In the Newtonian limit of the black ring, its geodesic equation agrees with the equation of motion of a particle in the Newtonian potential due to a homogeneous ring gravitational source. In this paper, we show that the Newtonian equation of motion allows the separation of variables in the spheroidal coordinates, providing an non-trivial constant of motion quadratic in momenta. This shows that the Newtonian limit of a black ring recovers the symmetry of its …
There is good evidence that full general relativity is non-integrable or even chaotic. We point out the severe repercussions: differentiable Dirac observables and a reduced phase space do not exist in non-integrable constrained systems and are thus unlikely to occur in a generic general relativistic context. Instead, gauge invariant quantities generally become discontinuous, thus not admitting Poisson-algebraic structures and posing serious challenges to a quantization. Non-integrability also renders the paradigm of relational dynamics cumbersome, thereby straining common interpretations of th…
