We consider the spin-current driven dynamics of a magnetic nanostructure in a conductive magnetic wire under a heat gradient in an open circuit, spin Seebeck effect geometry. It is shown that the spin-current scattering results in a spin-current torque acting on the nanostructure and leading to precession and displacement. The scattering leads also to a redistribution of the spin electrochemical potential along the wire resulting in a break of the polarity-reversal symmetry of the inverse spin Hall effect voltage with respect to the heat gradient inversion.
We study the response of the thermopower of a quantum dot in the Kondo regime to sinusoidal displacement of the dot energy level via a gate voltage using time dependent non-crossing approximation and linear response Onsager relations. Instantaneous thermopower begins to exhibit complex fluctuations when the driving amplitude is increased at constant driving frequency. We also find that the time averaged thermopower decreases steadily until it saturates at constant driving amplitude as a function of inverse driving frequency. On the other hand, time averaged thermopower is found to be quite sen…
We report on temperature dependent measurements of the Longitudinal Spin Seebeck Effect (LSSE) in the mixed valent manganite La$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$. By disentangling the contribution arising due to the Anisotropic Nernst effect, we observe that these two thermally driven phenomena vary disparately with temperature. In a narrow low temperature regime, the LSSE exhibits a $T^{0.55}$ dependence, which matches well with that predicted by the magnon-driven spin current model. Across the double exchange driven paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition, the LSSE exponent is significantly higher than…
Bismuth telluride is a low energy bulk band-gap topological system with conducting surface states. Besides its very good thermoelectric properties, it also makes a very good candidate for broadband photodetectors. Here, we report temperature-dependent photo-Seebeck effect in a bulk single crystalline bismuth telluride. On light illumination, an electrically biased sample shows distinguishable contributions in the measured current due to both the Seebeck effect and the normal photo-generated carriers within a narrow layer of the sample. Detailed experiments are performed to elucidate the distin…
Following the theoretical approach by Xiao et al [Phys. Rev. B 81, 214418 (2010)] to the spin Seebeck effect, we calculate the mean value of the total spin current flowing through a normalmetal/ ferromagnet interface. The spin current emitted from the ferromagnet to the normal metal is evaluated in the framework of the Fokker-Planck approach for the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation. We show that the total spin current depends not only on the temperature difference between the electron and the magnon baths, but also on the external magnetic field and magnetic anisotropy. Apart from t…
The spin-Seebeck effect refers to voltage signals induced in metals by thermally driven spin currents in adjacent magnetic systems. We present a theory of the spin-Seebeck signal in the case where the conductor that supports the voltage signal is the topologically protected two-dimensional surface-state system at the interface between a ferromagnetic insulator (FI) and a topological insulator (TI). Our theory uses a Dirac model for the TI surface-states and assumes Heisenberg exchange coupling between the TI quasiparticles and the FI magnetization. The spin-Seebeck voltage is induced by the TI…
We study the phenomenon of spin-current rectification in a one-dimensional XXZ spin chain in the presence of a thermal drive. In our model a pure spin current is generated by a temperature difference between two harmonic heat baths which in turn creates a spin voltage via the spin-Seebeck effect. Along with a local spin-current operator definition and the nonequilibrium modified Redfield solution we study the spin-rectification ratio as a function of system size and external magnetic field. Intriguing effects are observed at low temperatures such as oscillations with system size and high range…
Using the sensitivity of magneto-induced second harmonic generation to spin currents (SC), we demonstrate in Fe/Au/Fe/MgO(001) pseudo spin valves the generation of 250 fs-long SC pulses. Their temporal profile indicates that superdiffusive hot electron transport across a sub-100~nm Au layer is close to the ballistic limit and the pulse duration is primarily determined by the thermalization time of laser-excited hot carriers in Fe. Considering the calculated spin-dependent Fe/Au interface transmittance we conclude that a non-thermal spin-dependent Seebeck effect is responsible for the generatio…
The tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect is the dependence of the thermopower of magnetic tunnel junctions on the magnetic configuration. It is conventionally interpreted in terms of a thermoelectric generalization of the tunnel magnetoresistance. Here, we investigate the heat-driven electron transport in these junctions associated with electron-magnon scattering, using stochastic Landau-Lifshitz phenomenology and quantum kinetic theory. Our findings challenge the widely accepted single-electron picture of the tunneling thermopower in magnetic junctions.
We have experimentally studied the role of thermoelectric effects in nanoscale nonlocal spin valve devices. A finite element thermoelectric model is developed to calculate the generated Seebeck voltages due to Peltier and Joule heating in the devices. By measuring the first, second and third harmonic voltage response non locally, the model is experimentally examined. The results indicate that the combination of Peltier and Seebeck effects contributes significantly to the nonlocal baseline resistance. Moreover, we found that the second and third harmonic response signals can be attributed to Jo…
We theoretically study the nonequilibrium thermoelectric transport properties of a strongly-correlated molecule (or quantum dot) embedded in a tunnel junction. Assuming that the coupling of the molecule to the contacts is asymmetric, we determine the nonlinear current driven by the voltage and temperature gradients by using the perturbation theory. However, the subsystem consisting of the molecule strongly coupled to one of the contacts is solved by using the numerical renormalization group method, which allows for accurate description of Kondo correlations. We study the temperature gradient a…
We theoretically investigate effect of a transverse electric field generated by side gates and a vertical electric field generated by top, back gates on energy bands and transport properties of zigzag bilayer graphene ribbons (Bernal stacking). Using atomistic Tight Binding calculations and Green function formalism we demonstrate that bandgap is opened when either field is applied and even enlarged under simultaneous influence of the two fields. Interestingly, although vertical electric fields are widely used to control bandgap in bilayer graphene, here we show that transverse fields exhibit m…
We report time-resolved magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect driven by an interfacial temperature difference between itinerant electrons and magnons. The measured time-evolution of spin accumulation induced by laser-excitation indicates transfer of angular momentum across Au/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ and Cu/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ interfaces on a picosecond time-scale. The product of spin-mixing conductance and interfacial spin Seebeck coefficient determined is of the order of $10^8$ A m$^{-2}$ K$^{-1}$.
The interplay between spin and heat currents at magnetic insulator|nonmagnetic metal interfaces has been a subject of much scrutiny because of both fundamental physics and the promise for technological applications. While ferrimagnetic and, more recently, antiferromagnetic systems have been extensively investigated, a theory generalizing the heat-to-spin interconversion in noncollinear magnets is still lacking. Here, we establish a general framework for thermally-driven spin transport at the interface between a noncollinear magnet and a normal metal. Modeling the interfacial coupling between l…
The angular dependence of the thermal transport in insulating or conducting ferromagnets is derived on the basis of the Onsager reciprocity relations applied to a magnetic system. It is shown that the angular dependence of the temperature gradient takes the same form as that of the anisotropic magnetoresistance, including anomalous and planar Hall contributions. The measured thermocouple generated between the extremities of the non-magnetic electrode in thermal contact to the ferromagnet follows this same angular dependence. The sign and amplitude of the magneto-voltaic signal is controlled by…
We consider a spin-orbit-coupled two-dimensional electron system under the influence of a thermal gradient externally applied to two attached reservoirs. We discuss the generated voltage bias (charge Seebeck effect), spin bias (spin Seebeck effect) and magnetization-dependent thermopower (magneto-Seebeck effect) in the ballistic regime of transport at linear response. We find that the charge thermopower is an oscillating function of both the spin-orbit strength and the quantum well width. We also observe that it is always negative for normal leads. We carefully compare the exact results for th…
We investigate thermoelectric transport through interfaces with inelastic scatterings by developing a quantum theory, which has been extensively validated by existing theories. We find that under temperature bias, while a two-terminal conductor-insulator interface behaves only as a thermal resistor, a three-terminal conductor-insulator-conductor interface can function as an electricity generator caused by phonon-mediated electron scatterings with heat-charge current separation. Unlike conventional thermoelectrics which is a property of a bulk caused by the Seebeck effect, this thermoelectric b…
We investigate the rectification and negative differential effects of full-counting statistics of conjugate thermal spin transport in a spin Seebeck engine. The engine is made by an electron/magnon interface diode driven by a temperature bias, of which the scaled cumulant generating function is formulated in the framework of nonequilibrium Green's function. The strongly fluctuating interfacial electron density of states induced by quantum dot is responsible for these intriguing properties. This work is relevant for designing efficient spin caloritronic engine and can broaden our view in nonequ…
We present a theory of the Seebeck effect in nanomagnets with dimensions smaller than the spin diffusion length, showing that the spin accumulation generated by a temperature gradient strongly affects the thermopower. We also identify a correction arising from the transverse temperature gradient induced by the anomalous Ettingshausen effect and an induced spin-heat accumulation gradient. The relevance of these effects for nanoscale magnets is illustrated by ab initio calculations on dilute magnetic alloys.
A micro-patterned spin Seebeck device is fabricated using an on-chip heater. Current is driven through a Au heater layer electrically isolated from a bilayer consisting of Fe$_3$O$_4$ (insulating ferrimagnet) and a spin detector layer. It is shown that through this method it is possible to measure the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (SSE) for small area magnetic devices, equivalent to traditional macroscopic SSE experiments. Using a lock-in detection technique it is possible to more sensitively characterize both the SSE and the anomalous Nernst effect (ANE), as well as the inverse spin Hall e…
In this work, we study the conductance and the thermoelectric properties of a quantum dot embedded between two metallic leads with a side-coupled triple quantum dot molecule under a magnetic field. We focus on the spin polarization and thermoelectric quantities. Our results show the possibility of design an efficient spin filter device besides a noticeable enhancement of the Seebeck coefficient driven by the asymmetry in the quantum dots energy levels and a tunable pure spin Seebeck effect is obtained. This behavior also holds in the interacting case, where a pure spin Seebeck effect can be ob…
We study the transverse spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) thin film, such as Bi$_2$Se$_3$, which is sandwiched between two normal metal leads. The temperature bias $ΔT$ applied between the leads generates surface charge current which becomes spin-polarized due to strong spin-orbit coupling on the TI surface, with polarization vector acquiring a component $P_x \simeq 60%$ {\em parallel to the direction of transport}. When the third nonmagnetic voltage probe is attached to the portion of the TI surface across its width $L_y$, pure spin cur…
The spin Seebeck effect has recently been demonstrated as a viable method of direct energy conversion that has potential to outperform energy conversion from the conventional Seebeck effect. In this study, a computational transport model is developed and validated that predicts the spin Seebeck voltage in spin-polarized materials using material parameter obtain from first principle ground state density functional calculations. The transport model developed is based on a 1D effective mass description coupled with a microscopic inverse spin Hall relationship. The model can predict both the spin …
We theoretically propose a nonreciprocal spin Seebeck effect, i.e., nonreciprocal spin transport generated by a temperature gradient, in antiferromagnetic insulators with broken inversion symmetry. We find that nonreciprocity in antiferromagnets has rich properties not expected in ferromagnets. In particular, we show that polar antiferromagnets, in which the crystal lacks the spatial inversion symmetry, exhibit perfect nonreciprocity --- one-way spin current flow irrespective of the direction of the temperature gradient. We also show that nonpolar centrosymmetric crystals can exhibit nonrecipr…

We theoretically consider the spin Seebeck effect, the charge Seebeck coefficient, and the thermoelectric figure of merit in superconducting hybrid structures including either magnetic textures or intrinsic spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate that large magnitudes for all these quantities are obtainable in Josephson-based systems with either zero or a small externally applied magnetic field. This provides an alternative to the thermoelectric effects generated in high-field ($\sim 1$ T) superconducting hybrid systems, which were recently experimentally demonstrated. The systems studied contain …
We report the observation of longitudinal spin Seebeck effects (LSSE) in an all-oxide bilayer system comprising an IrO$_2$ film and an Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ film. Spin currents generated by a temperature gradient across the IrO$_2$/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ interface were detected as electric voltage via the inverse spin Hall effect in the conductive IrO$_2$ layer. This electric voltage is proportional to the magnitude of the temperature gradient and its magnetic field dependence is well consistent with the characteristic of the LSSE. This demonstration may lead to the realization of low-cost, stable,…
We develop a theoretical framework to study the influences of coupling asymmetry on the thermoelectrics of a strongly coupled SU($N$) Kondo impurity based on a local Fermi liquid theory. Applying non-equilibrium Keldysh formalism, we investigate charge current driven by the voltage bias and temperature gradient in the strong coupling regime of an asymmetrically coupled SU($N$) quantum impurity. The thermoelectric characterizations are made via non-linear Seebeck effects. We demonstrate that the beyond particle-hole (PH) symmetric SU($N$) Kondo variants are highly desirable with respect to the …
We probe the spin Seebeck effect in Gd$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$/Pt hybrid structures as a function of temperature and observe two sign changes of the spin Seebeck signal with decreasing temperature. A first sign change occurs at a temperature close to the Gd$_{3}$Fe$_{5}$O$_{12}$ magnetic compensation point at around 280 K. There the spin Seebeck signal changes sign abruptly with unaltered amplitude, indicating that the spin current is mainly caused by the magnetic Fe sub-lattices, which reorient their directions at this temperature. A second, more gradual sign change takes place around the order…
We report the observation of magnon spin currents generated by the Spin Seebeck effect (SSE) in a bulk single crystal of the easy-plane antiferromagnet NiO. A magnetic field induces a non-degeneracy and thereby an imbalance in the population of magnon modes with opposite spin. A temperature gradient then gives rise to a non-zero magnon spin current. This SSE is measured both in a local and a non-local geometry at 5$\,$K in bulk NiO. The magnetic field dependence of the obtained signal is modelled by magnetic field splitting of the low energy magnon modes, affecting the spin Seebeck coefficient…
We study the nonequilibrium transport for the asymmetric and negative differential magnon tunneling driven by temperature bias. We demonstrate that the many-body magnon interaction that makes the magnonic spectrum temperature-dependent is the crucial factor for the emergence of rectification and negative differential spin Seebeck effects in magnon tunneling junctions. When magnonic junctions have temperature-dependent density of states, reversing the temperature bias is able to give asymmetric spin currents and increasing temperature bias could give an anomalously decreasing magnonic spin curr…

We investigate the spin-dependent Seebeck coefficient and the tunneling magneto thermopower of CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJ) in the presence of thermal gradients across the MTJ. Thermal gradients are generated by an electric heater on top of the nanopillars. The thermo power voltage across the MTJ is found to scale linearly with the heating power and reveals similar field dependence as the tunnel magnetoresistance. The amplitude of the thermal gradient is derived from calibration measurements in combination with finite element simulations of the heat flux. Based on this, larg…
We investigate the spin-dependent thermoelectric effects in magnetic graphene in both diffusive and ballistic regimes. Employing the Boltzmann and Landauer formalisms we calculate the spin and charge Seebeck coefficients (thermopower) in magnetic graphene varying the spin splitting, temperature, and doping of the junction. It is found that while in normal graphene the temperature gradient drive a charge current, in the case of magnetic graphene a significant spin current is also established. In particular we show that in the undoped magnetic graphene in which different spin carriers belong to …
We study the spin transport theoretically in heterostructures consisting of a ferromagnetic metallic thin film sandwiched between heavy-metal and oxide layers. The spin current in the heavy metal layer is generated via the spin Hall effect, while the oxide layer induces at the interface with the ferromagnetic layer a spin-orbital coupling of the Rashba type. Impact of the spin Hall effect and Rashba spin-orbit coupling on the spin Seebeck current is explored with a particular emphasis on nonlinear effects. Technically, we employ the Fokker-Planck approach and contrast the analytical expression…
The spin-Seebeck effect (SSE) in platinum (Pt) and tantalum (Ta) on yttrium iron garnet (YIG) has been investigated by both externally heating the sample (using an on-chip Pt heater on top of the device) as well as by current-induced heating. For SSE measurements, external heating is the most common method to obtain clear signals. Here we show that also by current-induced heating it is possible to directly observe the SSE, separate from the also present spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) signal, by using a lock-in detection technique. Using this measurement technique, the presence of additional…
We report on the observation of the spin Seebeck effect in antiferromagnetic MnF$_2$. A device scale on-chip heater is deposited on a bilayer of Pt (4 nm)/MnF$_2$ (110) (30 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a MgF$_2$ (110) substrate. Using Pt as a spin detector layer it is possible to measure thermally generated spin current from MnF$_2$ through the inverse spin Hall effect. The low temperature (2 - 80 K) and high magnetic field (up to 140 kOe) regime is explored. A clear spin flop transition corresponding to the sudden rotation of antiferromagnetic spins out of the easy axis is observed …
We propose, for the first time, a valley Seebeck effect in gate tunable zigzag graphene nanoribbons as a result of the interplay between thermal gradient and valleytronics. A pure valley current is further generated by the thermal gradient as well as the external bias. In a broad temperature range, the pure valley current is found to be linearly dependent on the temperature gradient while it increases with the increasing temperature of one lead for a fixed thermal gradient. A valley field effect transistor (FET) driven by the temperature gradient is proposed that can turn on and off the pure v…
We present measurements of the spin Seebeck effect (SSE) by a technique that combines alternating currents (AC) and direct currents (DC). The method is applied to a ferrimagnetic insulator/heavy metal bilayer, Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$(YIG)/Pt. Typically, SSE measurements use an AC current to produce an alternating temperature gradient and measure the voltage generated by the inverse spin-Hall effect in the heavy metal at twice the AC frequency. Here we show that when Joule heating is associated with AC and DC bias currents, the SSE response occurs at the frequency of the AC current drive and can be…
The influence of an asymmetric in-plane magnetic anisotropy on the thermally activated spin current is studied theoretically for two different systems; (i) the system consisting of a ferromagnetic insulator in a direct contact with a nonmagnetic metal, and the sandwich structure consisting of a ferromagnetic insulating part sandwiched between two nonmagnetic metals. It is shown that when the difference between the temperatures of the two nonmagnetic metals in a structure is not large, the spin pumping currents from the magnetic part to the nonmagnetic ones are equal in amplitude and have oppos…
We have studied thermally driven magnon spin transport (spin Seebeck effect, SSE) in heterostructures of antiferromagnetic $α$-$\mathrm{Cr_2O_3}$ and Pt at low temperatures. Monitoring the amplitude of the local and nonlocal SSE signals as a function of temperature, we found that both decrease with increasing temperature and disappear above 100 K and 20 K, respectively. Additionally, both SSE signals show a tendency to saturate at low temperatures. The nonlocal SSE signal decays exponentially for intermediate injector-detector separation, consistent with magnon spin current transport in the re…
Understanding the transfer of spin angular momentum is essential in modern magnetism research. A model case is the generation of magnons in magnetic insulators by heating an adjacent metal film. Here, we reveal the initial steps of this spin Seebeck effect with <27fs time resolution using terahertz spectroscopy on bilayers of ferrimagnetic yttrium-iron garnet and platinum. Upon exciting the metal with an infrared laser pulse, a spin Seebeck current $j_\textrm{s}$ arises on the same ~100fs time scale on which the metal electrons thermalize. This observation highlights that efficient spin transf…
We present a theory of the spin Seebeck effect driven by subthermal non-local phonon heat transfer and spectral non-uniform temperature distribution. The theory explains the non-local behavior of the effect arising from the fact that phonons that store the energy (thermal) and the phonons that transfer it (subthermal) are located in different parts of the spectrum and have very different kinetics. This gives rise to a spectral phonon distribution function that deviates from local equilibrium along the substrate and is sensitive to boundary conditions. The theory also predicts a non-magnon orig…
Thermoelectric effects in magnetic tunnel junctions are currently an attractive research topic. Here, we demonstrate that the tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect (TMS) in CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB tunnel junctions can be switched on to a logic 1 state and off to 0 by simply changing the magnetic state of the CoFeB electrodes. We enable this new functionality of magnetic tunnel junctions by combining a thermal gradient and an electric field. This new technique unveils the bias-enhanced tunnel magneto-Seebeck effect, which can serve as the basis for logic devices or memories in a green information technology wi…
We identify and investigate thermal spin transport phenomena in sputter-deposited Pt/NiFe$_2$O$_{\textrm{4-x}}$ ($4\geq x \geq 0$) bilayers. We separate the voltage generated by the spin Seebeck effect from the anomalous Nernst effect contributions and even disentangle the intrinsic anomalous Nernst effect (ANE) in the ferromagnet (FM) from the ANE produced by the Pt that is spin polarized due to its proximity to the FM. Further, we probe the dependence of these effects on the electrical conductivity and the band gap energy of the FM film varying from nearly insulating NiFe$_2$O$_4$ to metalli…
The interplay of charge, spin and heat transport is investigated in the fascinating research field of spin caloritronics, the marriage of spintronics and thermoelectrics. Here, many new spin-dependent thermal transport phenomena in magnetic nanostructures have been explored in the recent years. One of them is the tunnel magneto-Seebeck (TMS) effect in magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs) that has large potential for future nanoelectronic devices, such as nanostructured sensors for three-dimentional thermal gradients, or scanning tunneling microscopes driven by temperature differences. The TMS desc…
Several experimental efforts such as material investigation and structure improvement have been made recently to find a large anomalous Nernst effect in ferromagnetic metals. Here, we develop a theory of spin transport driven by the anomalous Nernst effect in a diffusive ferromagnetic/nonmagnetic multilayer. Starting from a phenomenological formula of a spin-dependent electric current, the theoretical formulas of electric voltage and spin torque generated by the anomalous Nernst effect are derived. The magnitude of the electric voltage generated from the spin current via the inverse spin Hall …
Creating, manipulating and detecting spin polarized carriers are the key elements of spin based electronics. Most practical devices use a perpendicular geometry in which the spin currents, describing the transport of spin angular momentum, are accompanied by charge currents. In recent years, new sources of pure spin currents, i.e., without charge currents, have been demonstrated and applied. In this paper, we demonstrate a conceptually new source of pure spin current driven by the flow of heat across a ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metal (FM/NM) interface. This spin current is generated because t…
The spin Seebeck effect (SSE) has generated interest in the thermoelectric and magnetic communities for potential high efficiency energy harvesting applications, and spintronic communities as a source of pure spin current. To understand the underlying mechanisms requires characterisation of potential materials across a range of temperatures, however, for thin films the default measurement of an applied temperature gradient (across the sample) has been shown to be compromised by the presence of thermal resistances. Here, we demonstrate a method to perform low temperature SSE measurements where …
We studied the transient behavior of the spin current generated by the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect (LSSE) in a set of platinum-coated yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films of different thicknesses. The LSSE was induced by means of pulsed microwave heating of the Pt layer and the spin currents were measured electrically using the inverse spin Hall effect in the same layer. We demonstrate that the time evolution of the LSSE is determined by the evolution of the thermal gradient triggering the flux of thermal magnons in the vicinity of the YIG/Pt interface. These magnons move ballistically within …
