We compute numerically the full retarded Green's functions for conserved currents in the shear channel of a (2+1)-dimensional field theory at non-zero temperature and density. This theory is assumed to be holographically dual to a non-extremal, electric Reissner-Nordstr\om AdS4 black hole with planar horizon. Using the holographic description we obtain results for arbitrary frequencies and momenta and survey the detailed structure of these correlators. In particular, we demonstrate the `repulsion' and `clover-leaf crossing' of their poles and stress the importance of the residues at the poles beyond the hydrodynamic regime. As a consistency check, we show that our results agree precisely with existing literature for the appropriate quasinormal frequencies of the bulk theory.
We study the propagation of a massless minimally coupled scalar in the near horizon geometry of non-extremal NS5-branes. Using the holographic principle for dilatonic backgrounds we compute the two-point function of an operator in Little String Theory at the Hagedorn temperature. We then comment on relations with correlation functions in two dimensional string theory.

We use dimensional reduction techniques to relate real time finite T correlation functions in (2+1) dimensional QCD to bound state parameters in a generalized 't Hooft model with an infinite number of heavy quark and adjoint scalar fields. While static susceptibilities and correlation functions of the DeTar type can be calculated using only the light (static) gluonic modes, the dynamical correlators require the inclusion of the heavy modes. In particular we demonstrate that the leading T perturbative result can be understood in terms of the bound states of the 2d model and that consistency req…
We consider a (2+1)-dimensional field theory, assumed to be holographically dual to the extremal Reissner-Nordstrom AdS(4) black hole background, and calculate the retarded correlators of charge (vector) current and energy-momentum (tensor) operators at finite momentum and frequency. We show that, similar to what was observed previously for the correlators of scalar and spinor operators, these correlators exhibit emergent scaling behavior at low frequency. We numerically compute the electromagnetic and gravitational quasinormal frequencies (in the shear channel) of the extremal Reissner-Nordst…
We use AdS/QCD duality to compute the finite temperature Green's function G(omega,k;T) of the shear operator T_12 for all omega,k in hot Yang-Mills theory. The goal is to assess how the existence of scales like the transition temperature and glueball masses affects the correlator computed in the scalefree conformal N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We observe sizeable effects for T close to T_c which rapidly disappear with increasing T. Quantitative agreement of these predictions with future lattice Monte Carlo data would suggest that QCD matter in this temperature range is strongly intera…
We investigate the behavior of energy momentum tensor correlators in strongly coupled large-N_c Yang-Mills theory at nonzero temperature, working within the Improved Holographic QCD model. In particular, we determine the spectral functions and corresponding imaginary time correlators in the bulk and shear channels, and compare the results to recent perturbative and lattice calculations where available. For the bulk channel imaginary time correlator, for which all three results exist, lattice data is seen to favor the holographic prediction over the perturbative one over a wide range of tempera…
The shear viscosity of QED plasma at finite temperature and density is calculated by solving Boltzmann equation with variational approach. The result shows the small chemical potential enhances the viscosity in leading-log order by adding a chemical potential quadratic term to the viscosity for the pure temperature environment.
We use AdS/CFT duality to compute in N=4 Yang-Mills theory the finite temperature spatial correlator G(r) of the scalar operator F^2, integrated over imaginary time. The computation is carried out both at zero frequency and integrating the spectral function over frequencies. The result is compared with a perturbative computation in finite T SU(N_c) Yang-Mills theory.
We study the shear momentum diffusion and related modes of a strongly coupled $(2+1)$-dimensional conformal field theory at finite temperature and chemical potential, using a dual holographic description. We consider a space-time filling charged black brane solution of Einstein's gravity in $(3+1)$-dimensional asymptotically Anti-de Sitter space coupled to a $U(1)$ gauge field via a Dirac-Born-Infeld action. In addition to temperature and chemical potential, the holographic model has two other parameters: the tension of the brane, and the non-linearity parameter controlling the higher-derivati…
The temperature of the chiral restoration phase transition at 130 MeV as well as the temperature of the center symmetry ("deconfinement") phase transition in a pure glue theory at 300 MeV are two independent temperatures and their interplay determines a structure of different regimes of hot QCD. Given a chiral spin symmetry of the color charge and of the chromoelectric interaction we can conclude from observed symmetries of spatial and temporal correlators of N_F=2 QCD with domain wall Dirac operator at physical quark masses that above the chiral symmetry restoration crossover around T_pc but …
We calculate the expectation values of the stress-energy bitensor defined at two different spacetime points $x, x'$ of a massless, minimally coupled scalar field with respect to a quantum state at finite temperature $T$ in a flat $N$-dimensional spacetime by means of the generalized zeta-function method. These correlators, also known as the noise kernels, give the fluctuations of energy and momentum density of a quantum field which are essential for the investigation of the physical effects of negative energy density in certain spacetimes or quantum states. They also act as the sources of the …
We study a bottom-up holographic model of large-Nc Yang-Mills theory, in which conformal invariance is broken through the introduction of a dilaton potential on the gravity side. We use the model to calculate the spectral densities of the shear and bulk channels at finite temperature. In the shear channel, we compare our results to those derived in strongly coupled N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory as well as in weakly coupled ordinary Yang-Mills. In the bulk channel, where the conformal result is trivial, we make comparisons with both perturbative and lattice QCD. In both channels, we pay particula…
Starting from the Kubo formula we calculate the shear viscosity in hot phi**4 theory nonperturbatively by resumming ladders with a real-time version of the Bethe-Salpeter equation at finite temperature. In the weak coupling limit, the generalized Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem is shown to decouple the Bethe-Salpeter equations for the different real-time components of the 4-point function. The resulting scalar integral equation is identical with the one obtained by Jeon using diagrammatic ``cutting rules'' in the Imaginary Time Formalism.
In this thesis, we study the physics of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) using holographic methods borrowed from string theory. We start our discussion by motivating the use of such machinery, explaining how recent experimental results from the LHC and RHIC colliders suggests that the created QGP should be described as a strongly coupled liquid with small but nonvanishing bulk and shear viscosities. We argue that holographic dualities are a very efficient framework for studying transport properties in such a medium. Next, we introduce the underlying physics behind all holographic dualities, the Ad…
Previous studies of high-energy jet stopping in strongly-coupled plasmas have lacked a clear gauge-theory specification of the initial state. We show how to set up a well-defined gauge theory problem to study jet stopping in pure {\cal N}=4 super Yang Mills theory (somewhat analogous to Hofman and Maldacena's studies at zero temperature) and solve it by using gauge-gravity duality for real-time, finite-temperature 3-point correlators. Previous studies have found that the stopping distance scales with energy as E^{1/3} (with disagreement on the gauge coupling dependence). We do find that none o…
Within the closed time path formalism a general nonperturbative expression is derived which resums through the Bethe-Salpter equation all leading order contributions to the shear viscosity in hot scalar field theory. Using a previously derived generalized fluctuation-dissipation theorem for nonlinear response functions in the real-time formalism, it is shown that the Bethe-Salpeter equation decouples in the so-called (r,a) basis. The general result is applied to scalar field theory with pure lambda*phi**4 and mixed g*phi**3+lambda*phi**4 interactions. In both cases our calculation confirms the…
We calculate the thermal Euclidean correlators and the spectral functions of the energy-momentum tensor for pure gauge theories, including at non-zero spatial momentum, at leading order in perturbation theory. Our goal is to improve the extraction of transport properties from Euclidean correlators that are computable in lattice QCD. Based on our results and the predictions of hydrodynamics for the structure of the spectral functions at low frequencies, we show that the shear and bulk viscosities can advantageously be extracted from the Euclidean correlators of the conserved charges, energy and…
In lattice QCD, the Maximum Entropy Method can be used to reconstruct spectral functions from euclidean correlators obtained in numerical simulations. We show that at finite temperature the most commonly used algorithm, employing Bryan's method, is inherently unstable at small energies and give a modification that avoids this. We demonstrate this approach using the vector current-current correlator obtained in quenched QCD at finite temperature. Our first results indicate a small electrical conductivity above the deconfinement transition.
Correlation functions of the FF and F\tilde{F} operators in hot SU(3) Yang-Mills theory have recently been studied both on the lattice and in perturbation theory, and the results subsequently compared to the strong coupling limit of large-N_c N=4 Super Yang-Mills theory, available through the AdS/CFT correspondence. Here, we review the perturbative calculations, covering both Euclidean spatial correlators and the UV limit of spectral densities, and comment on the emerging physical picture as well as on possible extensions of the present studies.
We determine the shear viscosity of a hot and dense Yukawa-Fermi gas, using the standard Green-Kubo relation, according to which the shear viscosity is given by the retarded correlator of the traceless part of viscous energy-momentum tensor. We approximate this retarded correlator using a one-loop skeleton expansion, and express the bosonic and fermionic shear viscosities, $η_{b}$ and $η_{f}$, in terms of bosonic and fermionic spectral widths, $Γ_{b}$ and $Γ_{\pm}$. Here, the subscripts $\pm$ correspond to normal and collective (plasmino) excitations of fermions. We study, in particular, the e…
We study the viscosity spectral function of a holographic 2+1 dimensional fluid with Schroedinger symmetry. The model is based on a twisted compactification of $Ads_5\times S_5$. We numerically compute the spectral function of the stress tensor correlator for all frequencies, and analytically study the limits of high and low frequency. We compute the shear viscosity, the viscous relaxation time, and the quasi-normal mode spectrum in the shear channel. We find a number of unexpected results: The high frequency behavior is governed by a fractional 1/3 power law, the viscous relaxation time is ne…
A sum rule which relates a stress-energy tensor correlator to thermodynamic functions is examined within the context of a simple non-conformal gravity dual. Such a sum rule was previously derived using AdS/CFT for conformal $\mathcal{N} = 4$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, but we show that it does not generalize to the non-conformal theory under consideration. We provide a generalized sum rule and numerically verify its validity. A useful byproduct of the calculation is the computation of the spectral density in a strongly coupled non-conformal theory. Qualitative features of the spectral de…
We holographically compute supercharge diffusion constants in supersymmetric field theories, dual to AdS black brane solutions of arbitrary dimension. This includes the extension of earlier work by Kontoudi and Policastro for D3-branes to M2- and M5-brane theories. We consider the case of vanishing chemical potential. In particular, we relate the product of a diffusion constant and the energy density to a universal result for the fermionic absorption cross section. This relation is analogous to the famous proof of universality of $η/ s$. We calculate the diffusion constants in two different wa…
We show how to compute transport coefficients in gauge theories by considering the expansion of the Kubo formulas in terms of ladder diagrams in the imaginary time formalism. All summations over Matsubara frequencies are performed and the analytical continuation to get the retarded correlators is done. As an illustration of the procedure, we present a derivation of the transport equation for the shear viscosity in the scalar theory. Assuming the Hard Thermal Loop approximation for the screening of distant collisions of the hard particles in the plasma, we derive a couple of integral equations …
The shear viscosity $η$ has been calculated by using the Green-Kubo relation in the framework of a partonic transport approach solved at cascade level. We compare the numerical results for $η$ obtained from the Green-Kubo correlator with the analytical formulas in both the Relaxation Time Approximation (RTA) and the Chapman-Enskog approximation (CE). We investigate and emphasize the differences between the isotropic and anisotropic cross sections and between the massless and massive particles. We show that in the range of temperature explored in a Heavy Ion collision and for pQCD-like cross se…
Building on our earlier work and that of Son, we construct string theory duals of non-relativistic critical phenomena at finite temperature and density. Concretely, we find black hole solutions of type IIB supergravity whose asymptotic geometries realize the Schroedinger group as isometries. We then identify the non-relativistic conformal field theories to which they are dual. We analyze the thermodynamics of these black holes, which turn out to describe the system at finite temperature and finite density. The strong-coupling result for the shear viscosity of the dual non-relativistic field th…
Shear viscosity is a measure of the amount of dissipation in a simple fluid. In kinetic theory shear viscosity is related to the rate of momentum transport by quasi-particles, and the uncertainty relation suggests that the ratio of shear viscosity eta to entropy density s in units of hbar/k_B is bounded by a constant. Here, hbar is Planck's constant and k_B is Boltzmann's constant. A specific bound has been proposed on the basis of string theory where, for a large class of theories, one can show that eta/s is greater or equal to hbar/(4 pi k_B). We will refer to a fluid that saturates the stri…
