This paper clarifies the microscopic nature of the staggered scalar order, which is specific to even number of f electrons per site. In such systems, crystalline electric field (CEF) can make a singlet ground state. As exchange interaction with conduction electrons increases, the CEF singlet at each site gives way to Kondo singlets. The collective Kondo singlets are identified with itinerant states that form energy bands. Near the boundary of itinerant and localized states, a new type of electronic order appears with staggered Kondo and CEF singlets. We present a phenomenological three-state model that qualitatively reproduces the characteristic phase diagram, which have been obtained numerically with use of the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo combined with the dynamical mean-field theory. The scalar order observed in PrFe_4P_{12} is ascribed to this staggered order accompanying charge density wave (CDW) of conduction electrons. Accurate photoemission and tunneling spectroscopy should be able to probe sharp peaks below and above the Fermi level in the ordered phase.
In this paper, we study a set-up in which quantum dot is tunnel-coupled to Majorana-Kramers pair(MKP) which are the edge modes of time reversal invariant topological superconductor (TRITOPS), which is an experimental realization of time reversal invariant Kitaev chain model. Our motivation is to study the effect of Majorana-Kramers pair on Kondo fixed point and conversely the effect of Kondo interaction on Majorana-Kramers pair. This way we can capture the signatures of Majorana fermions on Kondo effect in quantum dots which can be probed feasibly in experiments. Employing the renormalization …
We discuss possible competition between magnetic and quadrupole Kondo effects in non-Kramers doublet systems under cubic symmetry. The quadrupole Kondo effect leads to non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) ground state, while the magnetic one favors ordinary Fermi liquid (FL). In terms of the $j$-$j$ coupling scheme, we emphasize that the orbital fluctuation must develop in the vicinity of the NFL-FL boundary. We demonstrate a change of behavior in the f-electron entropy by the Wilson's numerical renormalization-group (NRG) method on the basis of the extended two-channel Kondo exchange model. We present impl…
In non-Kramers Kondo systems with a quadrupolar degrees of freedom, an ordinary magnetic Kondo effect can compete with the quadrupolar Kondo effect. We discuss such competition keeping Pr$T_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ ($T$=Ir, Rh) and Pr$T_{2}$Al$_{20}$ ($T$=V, Ti) in mind, where the $Γ_{3}$ non-Kramers crystalline-electric-field (CEF) doublet ground state is realized in Pr$^{3+}$ ion with $(4f)^{2}$ configuration under cubic symmetry. The quadrupolar Kondo effect can be described by the two-channel Kondo model, which leads to the local non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) ground state, while the magnetic Kondo effect fa…
Acoustic signatures of the single-site quadrupolar Kondo effect in Y$_{0.966}$Pr$_{0.034}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ are presented. The elastic constant ($C_{11}-C_{12}$)/2, corresponding to the $Γ_3$(E)-symmetry electric-quadrupolar response, reveals a logarithmic temperature dependence of the quadrupolar susceptibility in the low-magnetic-field region below $\sim$0.3 K. Furthermore, the Curie-type divergence of the elastic constant down to $\sim$1 K indicates that the Pr ions in this diluted system have a non-Kramers ground-state doublet. These observations evidence the single-site quadrupolar Kondo ef…
We performed ultrasonic measurement on the rare-earth intermetallic compound PrInAg_2 to examine the quadrupolar Kondo effect associated with the non-Kramers Gamma_3 doublet ground state. The characteristic softening of the elastic constant (c_{11}-c_{12})/2 below 10 K in PrInAg_2 is attributed to a Curie term in quadrupolar susceptibility for the quadrupole O_2^2=J_x^2-J_y^2 of the stable Gamma_3 ground state. (c_{11}-c_{12})/2 turns to a slight increase with the -lnT dependence below 0.1 K, which suggests the quenching of the quadrupolar moment in the quadrupolar Kondo state. Under applied m…
We consider the simplest variant of a Kondo insulator where a doublet of localized $f$-electrons hybridizes with spin-degenerate conduction electrons. We analyse the symmetries of $f$-orbitals involved in the hybridization and point out that the effective four-band model of such systems is adiabatically connected with one that possesses chiral symmetry, which provides further descriptions of clean Kondo insulators. We obtain general conditions for the appearance of topological non-trivial states and discuss implications for rare-earth based compounds. As an example, we derive the full phase di…
Ferromagnetic contacts put in proximity with carbon nanotubes induce spin and orbital polarizations. These polarizations affect dramatically the Kondo correlations occurring in quantum dots formed in a carbon nanotube, inducing effective fields in both spin and orbital sectors. As a consequence, the carbon nanotube quantum dot spectral density shows a four-fold split SU(4) Kondo resonance. Furthermore, the presence of spin-orbit interactions leads to the occurrence of an additional polarization among time-reversal electronic states (polarization in the time-reversal symmetry or Kramers sector)…
Goldstone modes emerge associated with spontaneous breakdown of the continuous symmetry in the two-channel Kondo lattice, which describes strongly correlated f-electron systems with a non-Kramers doublet at each site. This paper derives the spectra of these collective modes by the equation of motion method together with the random phase approximation. The diagonal composite order breaks the SU(2) channel symmetry, and the symmetry-restoring collective mode couples with magnetic field. On the other hand, the off-diagonal or superconducting composite order breaks the gauge symmetry of conduction…
Notable non-Fermi liquid and quantum critical behaviors are observed in rare-earth metallic systems with non-Kramers local moments supporting a number of different multipolar moments. A prominent example is $\text{Pr(Ti,V)}_{2}\text{Al}_{20}$, where the non-Kramers doublet of the $\text{Pr}^{3+}$ ion allows quadrupolar and octupolar moments, but lacks a dipolar moment. Previous theoretical studies show that a single impurity Kondo problem with such an unusual local moment leads to novel non-Fermi liquid states. In this work, we investigate possible quantum critical behaviors arising from the c…
Adding a second Kondo channel to heavy fermion materials reveals new exotic symmetry breaking phases associated with the development of Kondo coherence. In this paper, we review two such phases, the "hastatic order" associated with non-Kramers doublet ground states, where the two-channel nature of the Kondo coupling is guaranteed by virtual valence fluctuations to an excited Kramers doublet, and "composite pair superconductivity," where the two channels differ by charge 2e and can be thought of as virtual valence fluctuations to a pseudo-isospin doublet. The similarities and differences betwee…
Materials with non-Kramers doublet ground states naturally manifest the two-channel Kondo effect, as the valence fluctuations are from a non-Kramers doublet ground state to an excited Kramers doublet. Here, the development of a heavy Fermi liquid requires a channel symmetry breaking spinorial hybridization that breaks both single and double time-reversal symmetry, and is known as hastatic order. Motivated by cubic Pr-based materials with $Γ_3$ non-Kramers ground state doublets, this paper provides a survey of cubic hastatic order using the simple two-channel Kondo-Heisenberg model. Hastatic or…
CeRhSi$_{3}$ is a superconductor under pressure coexisting with a weakly antiferromagnetic phase characterized by a Bragg peak at $\vec{q}_{0}$=($\sim$ 0.2, 0, 0.5) (N. Aso et al. J. Magn. Magn. Mater. 310, 602 (2007)). The compound is also a heavy fermion material with a large specific heat coefficient $γ$=110 mJ $\cdot$ mol$^{-1}$ $\cdot$ K$^{-2}$ and a high Kondo temperature of $T_{K}$=50 K indicative that CeRhSi$_{3}$ is in a strongly Kondo screened state. We apply high resolution neutron spectroscopy to investigate the magnetic fluctuations in the normal phase, at ambient pressures, and a…
The thermodynamic Bethe ansatz equations for the N = 6 Coqblin-Schrieffer model with crystal fields have been solved numerically. The realistic case of three Kramers doublets with arbitrary splittings has been studied for the first time. The specific heat has been calculated for representative combinations of the ionic energy splittings providing ample material for comparison with experimental results for Cerium impurities and compounds.
The optical conductivity in a Kondo lattice system is presented in terms of the memory function formalism. I use Kondo-lattice Hamiltonian for explicit calculations. I compute the frequency dependent imaginary part of the memory function ($M^{\p\p}(\om)$), and the real part of the memory function $M^{\p}(\om)$ by using the Kramers-Kronig transformation. Optical conductivity is computed using the generalized Drude formula. I find that high frequency tail of the optical conductivity scales as $σ(\om) \sim \frac{1}{\om}$ instead of the Drude $\frac{1}{\om^2}$ law. Such a behaviour is seen in stra…
Peculiar property of electronic order is clarified for the two-channel Kondo lattice. With two conduction electrons per site, the order parameter is a composite quantity involving both local and itinerant degrees of freedom. In contrast to the ordinary Kondo lattice, a heavy electron band is absent above the transition temperature, but is rapidly formed below it. The change of entropy associated with the ordering is found to be close to $\ln \sqrt 2$ per site. This entropy corresponds to the residual entropy in a two-channel Kondo impurity, which has been regarded as due to localized free Majo…
Cubic Pr-based compounds with $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet ground states can realize a novel heavy Fermi liquid with spinorial hybridization ('hastatic' order) that breaks time reversal symmetry. Several Pr-"1-2-20" materials exhibit a suggestive heavy Fermi liquid stabilized in intermediate magnetic fields; these provide key insight into the quadrupolar Kondo lattice. We develop a simple, yet realistic microscopic model of ferrohastatic order, and elaborate its experimental signatures and behavior in field, where it is a good candidate to explain the observed heavy Fermi liquids at intermediate …
Ultrasonic investigations of the single-site quadrupolar Kondo effect in diluted Pr system Y$_{0.966}$Pr$_{0.034}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ are reported. The elastic constant $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$ is measured down to ~40 mK using ultrasound for the dilute system Y$_{0.966}$Pr$_{0.034}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$ and the pure compound YIr$_2$Zn$_{20}$. We found that the elastic constant $(C_{11}-C_{12})/2$ of the Pr-dilute system exhibits a logarithmic temperature dependence below $T_0$ ~0.3 K, where non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior in the specific heat and electrical resistivity is observed. This logarithmic temperatu…
Among heavy fermion materials, there is a set of rare-earth intermetallics with non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments which exhibit a rich phase diagram with intertwined quadrupolar orders, superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior. However, more subtle broken symmetries such as multipolar orders in these Kondo materials remain poorly studied. Here, we argue that multi-spin interactions between local moments beyond the conventional two-spin exchange must play an important role in Kondo materials near the ordered to heavy Fermi liquid transition. We show that this drives a plethora of pha…
On the basis of Bethe ansatz solution of one dimensional Kondo model with electronic interaction, the thermodynamics equilibrium of the system in finite temperature is studied in terms of the strategy of Yang and Yang. The string hypothesis in the spin rapidity is discussed extensively. The thermodynamics quantities, such as specific heat and magnetic susceptibility, are obtained.
We study the electronic structure of a Pauli paramagnetic compound, La(2)CoSi(3) using photoemission spectroscopy and ab initio band structure calculations. Experimental valence band spectra exhibit signature of electron correlation induced feature around 2.5 eV - the correlation strength among Co 3d electrons is estimated to be close to 3 eV. The Co 2p core level spectra also exhibit correlation induced satellite features consistent with the scenario in the valence band spectra suggesting importance of conduction electron correlation in addition to the local moment in Kondo lattice systems. T…
We show that Ce- and Yb-based Kondo-lattice ferromagnets order mainly along the magnetically hard direction of the ground state Kramers doublet determined by crystalline electric field (CEF). Here we argue that this peculiar phenomenon, that was believed to be rare, is instead the standard case. Moreover, it seems to be independent on the Curie temperature $T_\mathrm{C}$, crystalline structure, size of the ordered moment and type of ground state wave function. On the other hand, all these systems show the Kondo coherence maximum in the temperature dependence of the resistivity just above $T_\m…
Novel electronic order is found theoretically for a system where even number of localized electrons per site are coupled with conduction electrons. For precise quantitative study, a variant of the Kondo lattice model is taken with crystalline electric field (CEF) singlet and triplet states for each site. Using the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method, a staggered order with alternating Kondo and CEF singlets is identified for a case with one conduction electron per site being distributed in two conduction bands each of which is quarter-filled…
We study the quasiparticle spectrum in an underscreened Kondo-lattice (KL) model that involves a single spin degenerate conduction band and two crystalline-electric-field (CEF) split Kramers doublets coupled by both orbital-diagonal and non-diagonal exchange interactions. We find the three quasiparticle bands of the model using a constrained fermionic mean field approach. While two bands are similar to the one-orbital model a new genuinely heavy band inside the main hybridization gap appears in the quasiquartet model. Its dispersion is due to effective hybridization with conduction states but …
Recent experiments have examined the impact of a magnetic field on ferroquadrupolar orders in the intermetallic Kondo material PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. Motivated by this, we use extensive Monte Carlo simulations to study a diamond lattice XY model of non-Kramers pseudospin-$1/2$ Pr$^{3+}$ moments which crucially incorporates three-spin interactions. This model supports a thermal $Z_3$ Potts ordering transition upon cooling from the paramagnetic phase into the ferroquadrupolar phase. An applied magnetic field along the [110] direction leads to a thermal Ising transition out of the quadrupolar ordered…
We present calculations for the temperature-dependent electronic structure and magnetic properties of thin ferromagnetic EuO films. The treatment is based on a combination of a multiband-Kondo lattice model with first-principles TB-LMTO band structure calculations. The method avoids the problem of double-counting of relevant interactions and takes into account the correct symmetry of the atomic orbitals. We discuss the temperature-dependent electronic structures of EuO(100) films in terms of quasiparticle densities of states and quasiparticle band structures. The Curie temperature T_C of the E…
We report temperature-dependent polarized optical conductivity [$σ(ω)$] spectra of CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, which is a reference material for CeRu$_2$Al$_{10}$ and CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ with an anomalous magnetic transition at 28 K. The $σ(ω)$ spectrum along the b-axis differs greatly from that in the $ac$-plane, indicating that this material has an anisotropic electronic structure. At low temperatures, in all axes, a shoulder structure due to the optical transition across the hybridization gap between the conduction band and the localized $4f$ states, namely $c$-$f$ hybridization, appears at 55 meV. Ho…
We present angle-resolved photoemission studies on the rare-earth hexaboride YbB$_6$, which has recently been predicted to be a topological Kondo insulator. Our data do not agree with the prediction and instead show that YbB$_6$ exhibits a novel topological insulator state in the absence of a Kondo mechanism. We find that the Fermi level electronic structure of YbB$_6$ has three 2D Dirac cone like surface states enclosing the Kramers' points, while the f-orbital which would be relevant for the Kondo mechanism is $\sim1$ eV below the Fermi level. Our first-principles calculation shows that the …
In a large number of rare-earth and actinide systems, Kondo effect tends to suppress magnetic order by making the spin singlet between localized and conduction electron spins. In the presence of orbital degrees of freedom, however, there emerge exotic electronic orders induced by Kondo effect. The orbital Kondo effect can collectively make diagonal and off-diagonal (superconducting) orders. With the particle-hole symmetry in conduction bands, these orders are all degenerate, forming a macroscopic SO(5) multiplet. This paper discusses recent theoretical development on these electronic orders wh…
The Kondo insulator SmB6 has long been known to exhibit low temperature transport anomalies whose origin is of great interest. Here we uniquely access the surface electronic structure of the anomalous transport regime by combining state-of-the-art laser- and synchrotron-based angle-resolved photoemission techniques. We observe clear in-gap states (up to 4 meV), whose temperature dependence is contingent upon the Kondo gap formation. In addition, our observed in-gap Fermi surface oddness tied with the Kramers' points topology, their coexistence with the two-dimensional transport anomaly in the …
We report the anisotropic changes in the electronic structure of a Kondo semiconductor CeOs$_2$Al$_{10}$ across an anomalous antiferromagnetic ordering temperature ($T_0$) of 29 K, using optical conductivity spectra. The spectra along the $a$- and $c$-axes indicate that a $c$-$f$ hybridization gap emerges from a higher temperature continuously across $T_0$. Along the b-axis, on the other hand, a different energy gap with a peak at 20 meV appears below 39 K, which is higher temperature than $T_0$, because of structural distortion. The onset of the energy gap becomes visible below $T_0$. Our obs…
We have investigated the low temperature quadrupolar phenomena of the non-Kramers system PrRh2Zn20 under magnetic fields in the [100] and [110] directions. Our experiments reveal the B-T phase diagram of PrRh2Zn20 involving four electronic states regardless of the field direction, namely, a non-Fermi liquid (NFL) state, an antiferro-quadrupolar (AFQ) ordered state, a novel heavy-fermion (HF) state, and a field-induced singlet (FIS) state. In the wide range of the NFL state, the resistivity can be well scaled by a characteristic temperature, suggesting the realization of the quadrupole Kondo ef…
We report thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the cubic non-Kramers system PrIr$_2$Zn$_{20}$ with a non-magnetic $\varGamma_{3}$ ground state doublet. In previous experiments, antiferroquadrupolar order at \hbox{$T_{\mathrm{Q}}=0.11$\,K} and a Fermi liquid state around $B_{\mathrm{c}}\approx5$\,T for \hbox{$\boldsymbol{B}\parallel[001]$}, indicative of possible ferrohastatic order, were discovered. For magnetic fields \hbox{$\boldsymbol{B}\parallel[001]$}, the low temperature longitudinal and transverse thermal expansion and magnetostriction are highly anisotropic. The resulting volume s…
Ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compounds are far less common than their antiferromagnetic analogs. In this work, we report the discovery of a new ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound, YbIr3Ge7. Like almost all ferromagnetic Kondo lattice systems, YbIr3Ge7 shows magnetic order with moments aligned orthogonal to the crystal electric field (CEF) easy axis. YbIr3Ge7 is unique in that it is the only member of this class of compounds that crystallizes in a rhombohedral structure with a trigonal point symmetry of the magnetic site, and it lacks broken inversion symmetry at the local moment site. AC magn…
A one-dimensional time-reversal-invariant topological superconductor hosts a Majorana Kramers pair at each end, where time-reversal symmetry acts as a supersymmetry that flips local fermion parity. We examine the transport anomaly of such a superconductor, floating and tunnel-coupled to normal leads at its two ends. We demonstrate the realization of a topologically-protected, channel-symmetric, two-channel Kondo effect without fine-tuning. Whereas the nonlocal teleportation vanishes, a lead present at one end telecontrols the universal transport through the other end.
Magnetic and other unconventional electronic orders are discussed for heavy electrons. In addition to the ordinary Kondo lattice, we consider non-Kramers systems taking the two-channel Kondo lattice, and another lattice that consists of a singlet-triplet f2 configuration. The latter gives a scalar order with staggered sublattices of crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo singlets, which accounts for the observed order in PrFe4P12. In the two-channel Kondo lattice, an odd-frequency pairing is realized that becomes degenerate at half-filling with a composite order involving both localized an…
The electronic structure of small Hubbard molecules coupled between two non-interacting semi-infinite leads is studied in the low bias-voltage limit. To calculate the finite-temperature Green's function of the system, each lead is simulated by a small cluster, so that the problem is reduced to that of a finite-size system comprising the molecule and clusters on both sides. The Hamiltonian parameters of the lead clusters are chosen such that their embedding potentials coincide with those of the semi-infinite leads on Matsubara frequencies. Exact diagonalization is used to evaluate the effect of…
Replacing a magnetic atom by a spinless atom in a heavy fermion compound generates a quantum state often referred to as a 'Kondo-hole'. No experimental imaging has been achieved of the atomic-scale electronic structure of a Kondo-hole, or of their destructive impact (Lawrence JM, et al. (1996) Kondo hole behavior in Ce0. 97La0. 03Pd3. Phys Rev B 53:12559-12562; Bauer ED, et al. (2011) Electronic inhomogeneity in a Kondo lattice. Proc Natl Acad Sci. 108:6857-6861) on the hybridization process between conduction and localized electrons which generates the heavy fermion state. Here we report visu…
Motivated by recent success of local electron tunneling into heavy fermion materials, we study the local electronic structure around a single Kondo hole in an Anderson lattice model and the Fano interference pattern relevant to STM experiments. Within the Gutzwiller method, we find that an intragap bound state exists in the heavy Fermi liquid regime. The energy position of the intragap bound state is dependent on the on-site potential scattering strength in the conduction and $f$-orbital channels. Within the same method, we derive a new $dI/dV$ formulation, which includes explicitly the renorm…
We show the three-dimensional electronic structure of the Kondo lattice CeIn3 using soft x-ray angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy in the paramagnetic state. For the first time, we have directly observed the three-dimensional topology of the Fermi surface of CeIn3 by photoemission. The Fermi surface has a complicated hole pocket centred at the Γ-Z line and an elliptical electron pocket centred at the R point of the Brillouin zone. Polarization and photon-energy dependent photoemission results both indicate the nearly localized nature of the 4f electrons in CeIn3, consistent with the theo…
The Kondo insulator SmB6 has long been known to exhibit low temperature (T < 10K) transport anomaly and has recently attracted attention as a new topological insulator candidate. By combining low-temperature and high energy-momentum resolution of the laser-based ARPES technique, for the first time, we probe the surface electronic structure of the anomalous conductivity regime. We observe that the bulk bands exhibit a Kondo gap of 14 meV and identify in-gap low-lying states within a 4 meV window of the Fermi level on the (001)-surface of this material. The low-lying states are found to form ele…
A series of Pr(TM)$_2$X$_{20}$ (with TM=Ti,V,Rh,Ir and X=Al,Zn) Kondo materials, containing non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments on a diamond lattice, have been shown to exhibit intertwined orders such as quadrupolar order and superconductivity. Motivated by these experiments, we propose and study a Landau theory of multipolar order to capture the phase diagram and its field dependence. In zero magnetic field, we show that different quadrupolar states, or the coexistence of quadrupolar and octupolar orderings, may lead to ground states with multiple broken symmetries. Upon heating, such states…
We studied the evolution of the electronic structure across the quantum critical point in V doped Cr employing high resolution photoemission spectroscopy. Experimental results exhibit signatures of pseudogap and orbital Kondo resonance peak at low temperatures for all the compositions studied suggesting a scenario of spin density wave quantum criticality corresponding to orbital Kondo effect. The pseudogap and the Kondo peak gradually reduces with V doping but remains finite at the quantum critical point indicating their relevance in widely discussed quantum phases in correlated electron syste…
The exact diagonalization and the variational cluster approximation (VCA) are used to study the nature of a novel Mott insulator induced by a strong spin-orbit coupling for a two-dimensional three-band Hubbard model consisting of the $t_{2g}$ manifold of $5d$ orbitals. To characterize the ground state, we introduce a local Kramer's doublet which can represent a state with effective angular momentum $J_{\rm eff}=|{\bm S}-{\bm L}|=1/2$ as well as spin $S=1/2$. Our systematic study of the pseudo-spin structure factor defined by the Kramer's doublet shows that the $J_{\rm eff}=1/2$ Mott insulator …
The temperature-dependent evolution of the Kondo lattice is a long-standing topic of theoretical and experimental investigation and yet it lacks a truly microscopic description of the relation of the basic $f$-$d$ hybridization processes to the fundamental temperature scales of Kondo screening and Fermi-liquid lattice coherence. Here, the temperature-dependence of $f$-$d$ hybridized band dispersions and Fermi-energy $f$ spectral weight in the Kondo lattice system CeCoIn$_5$ is investigated using $f$-resonant angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) with sufficient detail to allow direct comparison…
We clarify the two-channel Kondo effect in the seven-orbital Anderson model hybridized with $Γ_8$ conduction electrons by employing a numerical renormalization group method. From the numerical analysis for the case with two local $f$ electrons, corresponding to Pr$^{3+}$ or U$^{4+}$ ion, we confirm that a residual entropy of $0.5\log 2$, a characteristic of two-channel Kondo phenomena, appears for the local $Γ_3$ non-Kramers doublet state. For further understanding on the $Γ_3$ state, the effective model is constructed on the basis of a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme. Then, we rediscover the two-channe…
The understanding of magnetic and electronic properties of rare-earth intermetallics is summarized. The properties of NdNi5 or ErNi5 are understood by considering a few electronic subsystems like the f electronic subsystem and the conduction-electron subsystem. The localized f electrons can give a substantial contribution to the low temperature specific heat with the entropy of R ln2 in case of Kramers ions. In this view the heavy-fermion behaviour is related with the removal of the Kramers degeneracy of the ground state of the f electronic subsystem.
The topology and spin-orbital polarization of two-dimensional (2D) surface electronic states have been extensively studied in this decade. One major interest in them is their close relationship with the parities of the bulk (3D) electronic states. In this context, the surface is often regarded as a simple truncation of the bulk crystal. Here we show breakdown of the bulk-related in-plane rotation symmetry in the topological surface states (TSSs) of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) performed on the vicinal SmB$_6$(001)-$p$(2$\times$2) surface showed…
An one dimensional model of a Kondo impurity with arbitrary spin in the presence of electronic correlations is solved exactly. The Bethe ansatz equations are obtained for the case of quadratic dispersion. The ground state is studied in the thermodynamic limit, and the magnetic susceptibility at zero temperature is calculated.
Electronic transport through a quantum dot strongly coupled to electrodes is studied within a model with two conduction channels. It is shown that multiple scattering and interference of transmitted waves through both channels lead to Fano resonance associated with Kondo resonance. Interference effects are also pronouncedly seen in transport through the Aharonov-Bohm ring with the Kondo dot, where the current characteristics continuously evolve with the magnetic flux.
We study Kondo physics of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ impurity in electronic matter with strong spin-orbit interaction, which can be realized by depositing magnetic adatoms on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator. We show that magnetic properties of topological surface states and the very existence of Kondo screening strongly depend on details of the bulk material, and specifics of surface preparation encoded in time-reversal preserving boundary conditions for electronic wavefunctions. When this tunable Kondo effect occurs, the impurity spin is screened by purely orbital motion of…
Although the single-impurity Kondo physics has already been well understood, the understanding of the Kondo lattice problem where a dense array of local moments couples to the conduction electrons is still far from complete. The ability of creating and tuning the Kondo lattice in non-f-electron systems will be great helpful for further understanding the Kondo lattice behavior. Here we show that the Pb intercalation in the charge-density-wave-driven narrow-electronic-band system 1T-TaS2 induces a transition from the insulating gap to a sharp Kondo resonance in the scanning tunneling microscopy …
