Recent experiments have examined the impact of a magnetic field on ferroquadrupolar orders in the intermetallic Kondo material PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. Motivated by this, we use extensive Monte Carlo simulations to study a diamond lattice XY model of non-Kramers pseudospin-$1/2$ Pr$^{3+}$ moments which crucially incorporates three-spin interactions. This model supports a thermal $Z_3$ Potts ordering transition upon cooling from the paramagnetic phase into the ferroquadrupolar phase. An applied magnetic field along the [110] direction leads to a thermal Ising transition out of the quadrupolar ordered phase. A magnetic field along the [001] direction leads to only thermal crossovers, but supports a spinodal transition out of metastable domains which could be strongly pinned by coupling to elastic lattice deformations. We propose noise measurements as a potential probe to "hear" the spinodal transition. Our work highlights the importance of multispin interactions in Kondo materials near the small-to-large Fermi surface transition.
The cubic compound PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ is a quadrupolar Kondo lattice system that exhibits quadrupolar ordering due to the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ ground doublet and has strong hybridization between $4f$ and conduction electrons. Our study using high-purity single crystal reveals that PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ exhibits type-II superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} = 200$ mK in the nonmagnetic ferroquadrupolar state. The superconducting critical temperature and field phase diagram suggests moderately enhanced effective mass of $m^*/m_0 \sim 16$.
The ternary uranium compound UCu$_2$Sn with a hexagonal ZrPt$_2$Al-type structure shows a phase transition at 16 K. We reported previously that huge lattice-softening is accompanied by the phase transition, which originates from ferroquadrupolar ordering of the ground state non-Kramers doublet $Γ_5$. A macroscopic strain, which is expected to emerge spontaneously, was not detected by powder X-ray diffraction in the temperature range between 4.2 and 300 K. To search the spontaneous strain, we have carried out thermal expansion measurements on a single-crystalline sample along the $a$, $b$ and $…
We report results of low-temperature heat capacity, magnetocaloric effect and neutron diffraction measurements of TmVO$_{4}$, an insulator that undergoes a continuous ferroquadrupolar phase transition associated with local partially-filled $4f$ orbitals of the thulium (Tm$^{3+}$) ions. The ferroquadrupolar transition, a realization of Ising nematicity, can be tuned to a quantum critical point using a magnetic field oriented along the $c$-axis of the tetragonal crystal lattice, which acts as an effective transverse field for the Ising-nematic order. In small magnetic fields, the thermal phase t…
Negative thermal expansion is an unusual phenomenon appearing in only a handful of materials, but pursuit and mastery of the phenomenon holds great promise for applications across disciplines and industries. Here we report use of X-ray spectroscopy and diffraction to investigate the 4f-electronic properties in Y-doped SmS and employ the Kondo volume collapse model to interpret the results. Our measurements reveal an unparalleled decrease of the bulk Sm valence by over 20% at low temperatures in the mixed-valent golden phase, which we show is caused by a strong coupling between an emergent Kond…
The frustrated magnetism on the Kondo lattice system motivates intriguing Kondo-breakdown beyond the traditional Doniach scenario. Among them, the fractionalized Fermi liquid (FL*) has drawn a particular interest by virtue of its fractionalized nature. Here, we study the phase diagram of $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ Kondo-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice at a quarter filling. Employing the slave-fermion mean-field theory with $d \pm id$ spin liquid ansatz and exact diagonalization, we discuss the emergence of partial Kondo screening in the frustrated regime with comparable $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$, and t…
We report on the low-temperature thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the single-impurity quadrupolar Kondo candidate Y$_{1-x}$Pr$_{x}$Ir$_2$Zn$_{20}$. In the dilute limit, we find a quadrupolar strain that possesses a singular dependence on temperature $T$, $\varepsilon_{\mathrm{u}} \sim H^2 \log 1/T$, for a small but finite magnetic field $H$. Together with the previously reported anomalous specific heat $C$, this implies a quadrupolar Grüneisen ratio $Γ_u = \partial_T \varepsilon_{\mathrm{u}}/C \sim H^2/(T^2 \log 1/T)$ whose divergence for finite $H$ is consistent with the scenario of …
Numerical investigation on the thermodynamic properties of an Ising spin Kondo lattice model on a kagome lattice is reported. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we investigated the magnetic phases at 1/3-filling. We identified two successive transitions from high-temperature paramagnetic state to a Kosterlitz-Thouless-like phase in an intermediate temperature range and to a partially disordered phase at a lower temperature. The partially disordered state is characterized by coexistence of antiferromagnetic hexagons and paramagnetic sites with period $\sqrt3 \times \sqrt3$. We compare the results…
We report measurements of the thermal conductivity $κ$ on single crystalline CeRu$_4$Sn$_6$ in the temperature range between 80mK and 80K, along the main crystallographic directions. $κ$ is phonon-dominated in the whole temperature range and is found to be essentially isotropic. At low temperatures the data are well approximated by $κ\propto T^2$, which is attributed to a predominant scattering of phonons on electrons. We describe the data with a Callaway fit in the whole temperature range giving good agreement at low and high temperatures.
We study both the electrical and thermal transport near the heavy-fermion quantum critical point (QCP), identified with the breakdown of the Kondo effect as an orbital selective Mott transition. We show that the contribution to the electrical conductivity comes mainly from conduction electrons while the thermal conductivity is given by both conduction electrons and localized fermions (spinons), scattered with dynamical exponent $z = 3$. This scattering mechanism gives rise to a quasi-linear temperature dependence of the electrical and thermal resistivity. The characteristic feature of the Kond…
Kondo effect is a prominent quantum phenomenon describing the many-body screening of a local magnetic impurity. Here, we reveal a new type of non-magnetic Kondo behavior generated by gauge fluctuations in strongly-correlated baths. We show that a non-magnetic bond defect not only introduces the potential scattering but also locally enhances the gauge fluctuations. The local gauge fluctuations further mediate a pseudospin exchange interaction that produces an asymmetric Kondo fixed point in low-energy. The gauge-fluctuation-induced Kondo phenomena do not exhibit the characteristic resistivity b…
Entanglement of spin and orbital Kondo effect is investigated on the basis of a Kondo-type exchange model with twofold orbital degeneracy. By using Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method, we examine dynamical and thermal properties respecting the difference in time-reversal property of multipole operators. In the presence of particle-hole symmetry, the model has a new non-Fermi-liquid fixed point with a fractional entropy. The spectral intensity of the quadrupole susceptibility diverges in the zero-frequency limit, while the dipole susceptibility shows a Fermi-liquid-like behavior. Th…
We derive a consistent 2-loop scaling picture for a Kondo dot in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations using the flow equation method. Our analysis incorporates the important decoherence effects from both thermal and non-equilibrium noise in a common setting. We calculate the spin-spin correlation function, the T-matrix, and the magnetization as functions of applied magnetic field, dc-voltage bias and temperature. In all these quantities we observe characteristic non-equilibrium features for a nonvanishing external voltage bias like Kondo splitting and strongly enhanced logarithmic c…
We report on a comprehensive study of CePd$_{1-x}$Rh$_x$ $(0.6 \leq x \leq 0.95)$ poly- and single crystals close to the ferromagnetic instability by means of low-temperature ac susceptibility, magnetization and volume thermal expansion. The signature of ferromagnetism in this heavy-fermion system can be traced from 6.6 K in CePd down to 25 mK for $x=0.87$. Despite pronounced non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) effects in both, specific heat and thermal expansion, the Grüneisen ratio {\it does not} diverge as $T\to 0$, providing evidence for the absence of a quantum critical point. Instead, a peculiar "Kon…
The archetypal two-impurity Kondo problem in a serially-coupled double quantum dot is investigated in the presence of a thermal bias $θ$. The slave-boson formulation is employed to obtain the nonlinear thermal and thermoelectrical responses. When the Kondo correlations prevail over the antiferromagnetic coupling $J$ between dot spins we demonstrate that the setup shows negative differential thermal conductance regions behaving as a thermal diode. Besides, we report a sign reversal of the thermoelectric current $I(θ)$ controlled by $t/Γ$ ($t$ and $Γ$ denote the interdot tunnel and reservoir-dot…
We explore the effect of a (non) magnetic impurity on the thermal transport of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain model. This unique system allows to probe Kondo-type phenomena in a prototype strongly correlated system. Using numerical diagonalization techniques we study the scaling of the frequency dependent thermal conductivity with system size and host-impurity coupling strength as well as the dependence on temperature. We focus in particular on the analysis of cutting-healing of weak links or a magnetic impurity by the host chain via Kondo-like screening as the temperature is lowered.
We investigate the valence transition in three-dimensional topological Kondo insulator through slave-boson analysis of periodic Anderson model. By including the effect of intra-atomic Coulomb correlation $U_{fc}$ between conduction and local electrons, we find a first-order valence transition from Kondo region to mixed valence upon ascending of local level above a critical $U_{fc}$, and this valence transition usually occurs very close to or simultaneously with a topological transition. Near the parameter region of zero-temperature valence transition, rise of temperature can generate a thermal…
We investigate the 2D ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model for manganites with classical corespins at Hund's rule coupling J_H=6, with antiferromagnetic superexchange 0.03 < J' < 0.05. We employ canonical and grand canonical unbiased Monte Carlo simulations and find paramagnetism, weak ferromagnetism and the Flux phase, depending on doping and on J'. The observed single particle spectrum in the flux phase differs from the idealized infinite lattice case, but agrees well with an idealized finite lattice case with thermal fluctuations.
Quantum entanglement between an impurity and its environment is expected to be central in quantum impurity problems. We develop a method to compute the entanglement in spin-1/2 impurity problems, based on the entanglement negativity and the boundary conformal field theory (BCFT). Using the method, we study the thermal decay of the entanglement in the multichannel Kondo effects. At zero temperature, the entanglement has the maximal value independent of the number of the screening channels. At low temperature, the entanglement exhibits a power-law thermal decay. The power-law exponent equals two…
By combining the results of muon spin rotation and inelastic neutron scattering in the heavy fermion compounds Ce1-xLaxAl3 (0.0 <= x <= 0.2), we show that static magnetic correlations are suppressed above a characteristic temperature, T*, by electronic dissipation rather than by thermal disorder. Below T*, an energy gap opens in the single-ion magnetic response in agreement with the predictions of the Anisotropic Kondo Model. Scaling arguments suggest that similar behavior may underlie the "hidden order" in URu2Si2.
We study the relaxation properties of the Kondo lattice model using the nonequilibrium dynamical mean field formalism in combination with the non-crossing approximation. The system is driven out of equilibrium either by a magnetic field pulse which perturbs the local singlets, or by a sudden quench of the Kondo coupling. For relaxation processes close to thermal equilibrium (after a weak perturbation), the relaxation time increases substantially as one crosses from the local moment regime into the heavy Fermi liquid. A strong perturbation, which injects a large amount of energy, can rapidly tr…
Inelastic neutron scattering investigation on ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compounds belonging to CeSi_{2-x}Ga_{x}, x = 0.7, 1.0 and 1.3, system is reported. The thermal evolution of the quasielastic response shows that the Kondo interactions dominate over the RKKY interactions with increase in Ga concentration from 0.7 to 1.3. This is related to the increase in k-f hybridization with increasing Ga concentration. The high energy response indicates the ground state to be split by crystal field in all three compounds. Using the experimental results we have calculated the crystal field parameters …
Recent experiments on Kondo insulator SmB6 have revealed bulk excitations that could be Fermions without charge. This would lead to a residual linear term in the thermal conductivity that was not observed universally in experiments. To solve this mystery, we introduce a novel symmetric geometry for performing thermal transport measurements under strains. Magnetic-field-independent residual linear terms were found in flux-grown SmB6 at nominal zero strain, and they grew under a tensile strain, which is known to modify Sm valence. A small growth-dependent difference in the Sm valence might expla…
Impurities and defects in Kondo insulators can have an unusual impact on dynamics that blends with effects of intrinsic electron correlations. Such crystal imperfections are difficult to avoid, and their consequences are incompletely understood. Here we study magnetic impurities in Kondo insulators via perturbation theory of the s-d Kondo impurity model adapted to small bandgap insulators. The calculated magnetization and specific heat agree with recent thermodynamic measurements in samarium hexaboride (SmB$_6$). This qualitative agreement supports the physical picture of multi-channel Kondo s…
A series of Pr(TM)$_2$X$_{20}$ (with TM=Ti,V,Rh,Ir and X=Al,Zn) Kondo materials, containing non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments on a diamond lattice, have been shown to exhibit intertwined orders such as quadrupolar order and superconductivity. Motivated by these experiments, we propose and study a Landau theory of multipolar order to capture the phase diagram and its field dependence. In zero magnetic field, we show that different quadrupolar states, or the coexistence of quadrupolar and octupolar orderings, may lead to ground states with multiple broken symmetries. Upon heating, such states…
Among heavy fermion materials, there is a set of rare-earth intermetallics with non-Kramers Pr$^{3+}$ $4f^2$ moments which exhibit a rich phase diagram with intertwined quadrupolar orders, superconductivity, and non-Fermi liquid behavior. However, more subtle broken symmetries such as multipolar orders in these Kondo materials remain poorly studied. Here, we argue that multi-spin interactions between local moments beyond the conventional two-spin exchange must play an important role in Kondo materials near the ordered to heavy Fermi liquid transition. We show that this drives a plethora of pha…
We investigate the magnetic field dependent thermopower, thermal conductivity, resistivity and Hall effect in the heavy fermion metal YbRh2Si2. In contrast to reports on thermodynamic measurements, we find in total three transitions at high fields, rather than a single one at 10 T. Using the Mott formula together with renormalized band calculations, we identify Lifshitz transitions as their origin. The predictions of the calculations show that all experimental results rely on an interplay of a smooth suppression of the Kondo effect and the spin splitting of the flat hybridized bands.
We report results of isothermal magnetotransport and susceptibility measurements at elevated magnetic fields B down to very low temperatures T on high-quality single crystals of the frustrated Kondo-lattice system CePdAl. They reveal a B*(T) line within the paramagnetic part of the phase diagram. This line denotes a thermally broadened 'small'-to-'large' Fermi surface crossover which substantially narrows upon cooling. At B_0* = B*(T=0) = (4.6 +/- 0.1) T, this B*(T) line merges with two other crossover lines, viz. Tp(B) below and T_FL(B) above B_0*. Tp characterizes a frustration-dominated spi…
SmB6 is a mixed valence Kondo insulator that exhibits a sharp increase in resistance following an activated behavior that levels off and saturates below 4K. This behavior can be explained by the proposal of SmB6 representing a new state of matter, a Topological Kondo insulator, in which a Kondo gap is developed and topologically protected surface conduction dominates low-temperature transport. Exploiting its non-linear dynamics, a tunable SmB6 oscillator device was recently demonstrated, where a small DC current generates large oscillating voltages at frequencies from a few Hz to hundreds of M…
We investigate theoretically the thermoelectric transport properties of a T-shaped double quantum dot side-coupled to a topological superconducting nanowire hosting Majorana zero-energy modes. The calculations are performed using the numerical renormalization group method focusing on the transport regime, where the system exhibits the two-stage Kondo effect. It is shown that the leakage of Majorana quasiparticles into the double dot system results in a half-suppression of the second stage of the Kondo effect, which is revealed through fractional values of the charge and heat conductances and g…
Hexagonal CeRhSn with paramagnetic $4f$ moments on a distorted Kagome lattice displays zero-field quantum critical behavior related to geometrical frustration. We report high-resolution thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements under multiextreme conditions such as uniaxial stress up to 200 MPa, temperatures down to 0.1 K and magnetic fields up to 10 T. Under uniaxial stress along the $a$-direction, quantum criticality disappears and a complex magnetic phase diagram arises with a sequence of phases below 1.2 K and fields between 0 and 3 T ($\parallel a$). Since the Kondo coupling inc…
We grew the single crystal of stoichiometric Tm5Si2.0Ge2.0 using a Bridgeman method and performed XRD, EDS, magnetization, ac and dc magnetic susceptibilities, specific heat, electrical resistivity and XPS experiments. It crystallizes in orthorhombic Sm5Ge4-type structure. The mean valence of Tm ions in Tm5Si2.0Ge2.0 is almost trivalent. The 4f states is split by the crystalline electric field. The ground state exhibits the long range antiferromagnetic order with the ferromagnetically coupled magnetic moments in the ac plane below 8.01 K, while the exited states exhibit the reduction of magnet…
We study the low-temperature thermodynamics of a spin-S magnetic impurity coupled to m degenerate bands of interacting electrons in one dimension. By exploiting boundary conformal field theory techniques, we derive exact results for the possible impurity thermal and magnetic response. The leading behavior of the impurity magnetic susceptibility is shown to be insensitive to the electron-electron interaction. In contrast, there are two types of scaling behavior of the impurity specific heat consistent with the symmetries of the problem: Either it remains the same as for the ordinary multichanne…
We investigate the thermal and transport properties of CexLa1-xRu2Al10 to clarify the origin of the recently discovered mysterious phase below T0=27 K in CeRu2Al10 where a large magnetic entropy is released, however, the existence of an internal magnetic field is ruled out by 27Al-NQR measurement. We find that T0 decreases with decreasing x and disappears at x~0.45. T0 of CeRu2Al10 is suppressed down to 26 K under H=14.5 T along the a-axis. These results clearly indicate that the transition has a magnetic origin and is ascribed to the interaction between Ce ions. Considering the results of spe…
Magnetization, heat capacity, electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power, and Hall effect have been investigated on single-crystalline Ce_2PdSi_3. This compound is shown to order antiferromagnetically below N'eel temperature (T_N) \~3 K. The Sommerfeld coefficient far below T_N is found to be about 110 mJ/K^2 mol Ce, which indicates the heavy-fermion character of this compound. The transport and magnetic properties exhibit large anisotropy with an interplay between crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo effects. The sign of thermoelectric power is opposite for different directions at hig…
We measured the polarized optical conductivity of URu$_2$Si$_2$ from room temperature down to 5 K, covering the Kondo state, the coherent Kondo liquid regime, and the hidden-order phase. The normal state is characterized by an anisotropic behavior between the ab plane and c axis responses. The ab plane optical conductivity is strongly influenced by the formation of the coherent Kondo liquid: a sharp Drude peak develops and a hybridization gap at 12 meV leads to a spectral weight transfer to mid-infrared energies. The c axis conductivity has a different behavior: the Drude peak already exists a…
CeRh2As2 has recently been reported to be a rare case of multi-phase unconventional superconductor [S. Khim et al., arXiv:2101.09522] close to a quantum critical point (QCP). Here, we present a comprehensive study of its normal state properties and of the phase (I) below To ~ 0.4 K which preempts superconductivity at Tc = 0.26 K. The 2nd-order phase transition at To presents signatures in specific heat and thermal expansion, but none in magnetization and ac-susceptibility, indicating a non-magnetic origin of phase I. In addition, an upturn of the in-plane resistivity at To points to a gap open…
The thermal conductivity $κ$ of the Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ was measured at low temperature, down to 70 mK, in magnetic fields up to 15 T, on single crystals grown using both the floating-zone and the flux methods. The residual linear term $κ_0/T$ at $T \to 0$ is found to be zero in all samples, for all magnetic fields, in agreement with previous studies. There is therefore no clear evidence of fermionic heat carriers. In contrast to some prior data, we observe a large enhancement of $κ(T)$ with increasing field. The effect of field is anisotropic, depending on the relative orientation of fiel…
We report on the electronic band structure, structural, magnetic and thermal properties of Ce$_2$Rh$_3$Sn$_5$. Ce $L_{\mathrm{III}}$-edge XAS spectra give direct evidence for an intermediate valence behaviour. Thermodynamic measurements reveal magnetic transitions at $T_{\mathrm{N1}}\approx$ 2.9 K and $T_{\mathrm{N2}}\approx$ 2.4 K. Electrical resistivity shows behaviour typical for Kondo lattices. The coexistence of magnetic order and valence fluctuations in a Kondo lattice system we attribute to a peculiar crystal structure in which Ce ions occupy two distinct lattice sites. Analysis of the …
Magnetic and electronic properties of a Kondo lattice model with Ising localized spins are studied on an isotropic triangular lattice. By using Monte Carlo simulation, we present that the model shows a rich phase diagram with four dominant states: two-sublattice stripe, three-sublattice ferrimganetic, partially disordered, and Kosterlitz-Thouless like quasi-long-range ordered states. Among them, the partially disordered state and Kosterlitz-Thouless like state are intermediate phases induced by thermal fluctuations in the phase competing regime; they are present only at finite temperatures and…
Within condensed-matter systems, strong electronic interactions often lead to exotic quantum phases. A recent manifestation of this is the unexpected observation of magnetic quantum oscillations and metallic thermal transport, both properties of systems with Fermi surfaces of itinerant quasiparticles, in the Kondo insulators SmB6 and YbB$_{12}$. To understand these phenomena, it is informative to study their evolution as the energy gap of the Kondo-Insulator state is closed by a large magnetic field. We show here that both the quantum-oscillation frequency and the cyclotron mass display a stro…
We report specific heat ($C$) and magnetization ($M$) of single crystalline Ce$_4$Pt$_{12}$Sn$_{25}$ at temperature down to $\sim$50mK and in fields up to 3T. $C/T$ exhibits a sharp anomaly at 180mK, with a large $ΔC/T\sim$30J/molK$^2$-Ce, which, together with the corresponding cusp-like magnetization anomaly, indicates an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state with a Néel temperature $T_N$=180mK. Numerical calculations based on a Heisenberg model reproduce both zero-field $C$ and $M$ data, thus placing Ce$_4$Pt$_{12}$Sn$_{25}$ in the weak exchange coupling $J<J_c$ limit of the Doniach diagram, …
We have investigated a single crystal of CeAgSb2 using low field ac-susceptibility, thermal expansion and magnetostriction measurements in the temperature range 1.5K to 90K. The ac-susceptibility exhibits a sharp peak at 9.7K for both B//c and B perp c due to the magnetic ordering of the Ce moment. The thermal expansion coefficient alpha, exhibits highly anisotropic behaviour between 3K and 80K : alpha is positive for dL/L perp c, but negative for dL/L // c. Furthermore, alpha (for dL/L) perp c (i.e. in ab-plane) exhibits a sharp peak at TN followed by a broad maximum at 20K, while a sharp neg…
We investigate the necessary conditions for the emergence of complex, noncoplanar magnetic configurations in a Kondo lattice model with classical local moments on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice and their evolution in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that topologically nontrivial spin textures, including a new canted flux state, with nonzero scalar chirality arise dynamically from realistic short-range interactions. Our results establish that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is necessary for the emergence of these novel magnetic states when the …
The search for a Fermi surface in the absence of a conventional Fermi liquid has thus far yielded very few potential candidates. Among promising materials are spin-frustrated Mott insulators near the insulator-metal transition, where theory predicts a Fermi surface associated with neutral low energy excitations. Here we reveal another route to experimentally realise a Fermi surface in the absence of a Fermi liquid by the experimental study of a Kondo insulator SmB$_6$ positioned close to the insulator-metal transition. We present experimental signatures down to low temperatures ($\ll 1$ K) ass…
The new Kondo material YbIr$_3$Si$_7$, similar to other Kondo insulators, has been reported to exhibit charge-neutral fermionic excitations through measurements of specific heat and thermal conductivity at low temperatures. We performed $^{29}$Si-NMR on YbIr$_3$Si$_7$ to investigate the magnetic response of charge-neutral fermions from a microscopic perspective. In low magnetic fields parallel to the $c$ axis, a single NMR peak in the paramagnetic state splits into three peaks below $T_{\rm N}$. In contrast, only a slight shift of the single NMR peak was observed in high magnetic fields. This …
The interplay of disorder and competing interactions is investigated in the carrier-induced ferromagnetic state of the Kondo lattice model within a numerical finite-size study in which disorder is treated exactly. Competition between impurity spin couplings, stability of the ferromagnetic state, and magnetic transition temperature are quantitatively investigated in terms of magnon properties for different models including dilution, disorder, and weakly-coupled spins. A strong optimization is obtained for T_c at hole doping p << x, highlighting the importance of compensation in diluted magnetic…
Probing the universal low temperature magnetic field scaling of Kondo-correlated quantum dots via electrical conductance has proved to be experimentally challenging. Here, we show how to probe this in nonlinear thermocurrent spectroscopy applied to a molecular quantum dot in the Kondo regime. Our results demonstrate that the bias-dependent thermocurrent is a sensitive probe of universal Kondo physics, directly measures the splitting of the Kondo resonance in a magnetic field, and opens up possibilities for investigating nanosystems far from thermal and electrical equilibrium.
We consider a strongly interacting quantum dot connected to two leads held at quite different temperatures. Our aim is to study the behavior of the Kondo effect in the presence of large thermal biases. We use three different approaches, namely, a perturbation formalism based on the Kondo Hamiltonian, a slave-boson mean-field theory for the Anderson model at large charging energies and a truncated equation-of-motion approach beyond the Hartree-Fock approximation. The two former formalisms yield a suppression of the Kondo peak for thermal gradients above the Kondo temperature, showing a remarkab…
The thermal expansion and heat capacity of FeSb2 at ambient pressure agrees with a picture of a temperature induced spin state transition within the Fe t_{2g} multiplet. However, high pressure powder diffraction data show no sign of a structural phase transition up to 7GPa. A bulk modulus B=84(3)GPa has been extracted and the temperature dependence of the Gruneisen parameter has been determined. We discuss here the relevance of a Kondo insulator description for this material.
Magnetic and electronic states of an Ising-spin Kondo lattice model on a kagome lattice are investigated by a Monte Carlo simulation. In addition to the conventional ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic orders, we show that this model exhibits several thermally-induced phases, such as partially disordered, Kosteritz-Thouless-like, and loop-liquid states. In the partially disordered state, we show that the magnetic transition is associated with the charge-gap formation. We find that the density of state shows characteristic peaks reflecting the underlying spin texture. In the loop-liquid state, we a…
Crystalline solids are generally known as excellent heat conductors, amorphous materials or glasses as thermal insulators. It has thus come as a surprise that certain crystal structures defy this paradigm. A prominent example are type-I clathrates and other materials with guest-host structures. They sustain low-energy Einstein-like modes in their phonon spectra, but are also prone to various types of disorder and phonon-electron scattering and thus the mechanism responsible for their ultralow thermal conductivities has remained elusive. While recent ab initio lattice dynamics simulations show …
We study the thermal transport through a Majorana island connected to multiple external quantum wires. In the presence of a large charging energy, we find that the Wiedemann-Franz law is nontrivially violated at low temperature, contrarily to what happens for the overscreened Kondo effect and for nontopological junctions. For three wires, we find that the Lorenz ratio is rescaled by a universal factor 2/3 and we show that this behavior is due to the presence of localized Majorana modes on the island.
We report thermal expansion and magnetostriction of the cubic non-Kramers system PrIr$_2$Zn$_{20}$ with a non-magnetic $\varGamma_{3}$ ground state doublet. In previous experiments, antiferroquadrupolar order at \hbox{$T_{\mathrm{Q}}=0.11$\,K} and a Fermi liquid state around $B_{\mathrm{c}}\approx5$\,T for \hbox{$\boldsymbol{B}\parallel[001]$}, indicative of possible ferrohastatic order, were discovered. For magnetic fields \hbox{$\boldsymbol{B}\parallel[001]$}, the low temperature longitudinal and transverse thermal expansion and magnetostriction are highly anisotropic. The resulting volume s…
Proximity of two different materials leads to an intricate coupling of quasiparticles so that an unprecedented electronic state is often realized at the interface. Here, we demonstrate a resonance-type many-body ground state in graphene, a non-magnetic two-dimensional Dirac semimetal, when grown on SmB6, a Kondo insulator, via thermal decomposition of fullerene molecules. This ground state is typically observed in three-dimensional magnetic materials with correlated electrons. Above the characteristic Kondo temperature of the substrate, the electron band structure of pristine graphene remains …
The physical properties of an intermetallic compound CeRh2Ga2 have been investigated by magnetic susceptibility χ(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), heat capacity C_p(T), electrical resistivity ρ(T), thermal conductivity κ(T) and thermopower S(T) measurements. CeRh2Ga2 is found to crystallize with CaBe2Ge2-type primitive tetragonal structure (space group P4/nmm). No evidence of long range magnetic order is seen down to 1.8 K. The χ(T) data show paramagnetic behavior with an effective moment μ_eff ~ 2.5 μ_B/Ce indicating Ce^3+ valence state of Ce ions. The ρ(T) data exhibit Kondo lattice behavi…
