In a large number of rare-earth and actinide systems, Kondo effect tends to suppress magnetic order by making the spin singlet between localized and conduction electron spins. In the presence of orbital degrees of freedom, however, there emerge exotic electronic orders induced by Kondo effect. The orbital Kondo effect can collectively make diagonal and off-diagonal (superconducting) orders. With the particle-hole symmetry in conduction bands, these orders are all degenerate, forming a macroscopic SO(5) multiplet. This paper discusses recent theoretical development on these electronic orders which are relevant to Pr$^{3+}$ and U$^{4+}$ systems with even number of $f$ electrons per site. In the superconducting order, each conduction-electron pair is coupled with local degrees of freedom, forming a composite entity with a staggered spatial pattern. The quasi-particle spectrum is best interpreted as virtual hybridization with resonant states at the Fermi level. Possible order parameter for URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the hidden order state is discussed in the context of composite orders. Briefly discussed are related issues such as homogeneous odd-frequency pairing and SO(5) theory for high-temperature superconductors.
We study the spin-$\frac32$ Hubbard-Kondo lattice model by means of the Composite Operator Method, after applying a Holstein-Primakov transformation. The spin and particle dynamics in the ferromagnetic state are calculated by taking into account strong on-site correlations between electrons and antiferromagnetic exchange among $\frac32$ spins, together with usual Hund coupling between electrons and spins.
Goldstone modes emerge associated with spontaneous breakdown of the continuous symmetry in the two-channel Kondo lattice, which describes strongly correlated f-electron systems with a non-Kramers doublet at each site. This paper derives the spectra of these collective modes by the equation of motion method together with the random phase approximation. The diagonal composite order breaks the SU(2) channel symmetry, and the symmetry-restoring collective mode couples with magnetic field. On the other hand, the off-diagonal or superconducting composite order breaks the gauge symmetry of conduction…
Kondo-like effect, namely the upturn of resistivity at low temperatures, has been observed in perovskite manganite when nonmagnetic insulators were doped as the secondary phase. In this paper, the low-temperature resistivity upturn effect was argued to be originated from the interfacial magnetic phase reconstruction. Heisenberg spin lattices have been simulated using Monte Carlo method to reveal the phase competition around the secondary phase boundary, namely the manganite-insulator boundary behaves a weak antiferromagnetic tendency. And the resistor-network model based on the double-exchange…
A magnetic impurity embedded in a metal host is collectively screened by a cloud of conduction electrons to form a Kondo singlet below a characteristic energy scale $T_K$, the Kondo temperature, through the mechanism of the Kondo effect. We have reinvestigated the Kondo singlet by means of the newly developed natural orbitals renormalization group (NORG) method. We find that, in the framework of natural orbitals formalism, the Kondo screening mechanism becomes transparent and simple, while the intrinsic structure of Kondo singlet is clearly resolved. For a single impurity Kondo system, there e…
We analyze a microscopic origin of the Kondo effect-assisted orbital order in heavy-fermion materials. By studying the periodic two-orbital Anderson model with two local electrons, we show that frustration of Hund's rule coupling due to the Kondo effect leads to an incommensurate spiral orbital and magnetic order, which exists only inside the Kondo screened (heavy-electron) phase. This spiral state can be observed in neutron and resonant X-ray scattering measurements in ${\rm U}$- and ${\rm Pr}$-based heavy-fermion compounds, and realized in cold atomic gases, e.g. fermionic ${}^{173}{\rm Yb}$…
We examine Kondo effect in the periodic Anderson model for which the conduction band is of multi-orbital character and subject to mirror symmetry breaking field imposed externally. Taking p-orbital-based toy model for analysis, we find the Kondo pairing symmetry of p-wave character emerges self-consistently over some regions of parameter space and filling factor even though only the on-site Kondo hybridization is assumed in the microscopic Hamiltonian. The band structure in the Kondo-hybridized phase becomes nematic, with only two-fold symmetry, due to the p-wave Kondo coupling. The reduced sy…
We study the Kondo effect of a two-orbital vertical quantum dot (QD) coupled to two ferromagnetic leads by employing an equation of motion method. When the ferromagnetic leads are coupled with parallel spin polarization, we find three peaks in the single-particle excitation spectra. The middle one is the Kondo resonance caused by the orbital degrees of freedom. In magnetic fields, the Kondo effect vanishes. However, at a certain magnetic field new two-fold degenerate states arise and the Kondo effect emerges there. In contrast, when the ferromagnetic leads are coupled with antiparallel spin po…
We investigate, through the density-matrix renormalization group and the Lanczos technique, the possibility of a two-leg Kondo ladder present an incommensurate orbital order. Our results indicate a staggered short-range orbital order at half-filling. Away from half-filling our data are consistent with an incommensurate quasi-long-range orbital order. We also observed that an interaction between the localized spins enhances the rung-rung current correlations.
Magnetic and other unconventional electronic orders are discussed for heavy electrons. In addition to the ordinary Kondo lattice, we consider non-Kramers systems taking the two-channel Kondo lattice, and another lattice that consists of a singlet-triplet f2 configuration. The latter gives a scalar order with staggered sublattices of crystalline-electric-field (CEF) and Kondo singlets, which accounts for the observed order in PrFe4P12. In the two-channel Kondo lattice, an odd-frequency pairing is realized that becomes degenerate at half-filling with a composite order involving both localized an…
We show how to resolve coherent low-energy features embedded in a broad high-energy background by use of a fully self-consistent calculation for composite particle operators. The method generalizes the formulation of Roth, which linearizes the dynamics of composite operators at any energy scale. Self-consistent equations are derived and analyzed in the case of the single-impurity SU(N) Kondo model.
Resolving the heavy fermion band in the conduction electron momentum resolved spectral function of the Kondo lattice model is challenging since, in the weak coupling limit, its spectral weight is exponentially small. In this article we consider a composite fermion operator, consisting of a conduction electron dressed by spin fluctuations that shares the same quantum numbers as the electron operator. Using approximation free auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo simulations we show that for the SU(2) spin-symmetric model on the square lattice at half filling, the composite fermion acts as a magni…
The article reviews recent results for the low energy physics of fast tunneling centers in metallic environments. For strong enough couplings to the environment these tunneling centers display an orbital Kondo effect and give rise to a non-Fermi-liquid behavior. This latter property is explained by establishing a mapping of the tunneling center model to the multichannel Kondo model via the renormalization group transformation combined with a $1/N_f$ expansion. The case of M-state systems, the role of the splittings and the present experimental situation are also discussed.
A recently developed continuous time solver based on an expansion in hybridization about an exactly solved local limit is reformulated in a manner appropriate for general classes of quantum impurity models including spin exchange and pair hopping terms. The utility of the approach is demonstrated via applications to the dynamical mean field theory of the Kondo lattice and two-orbital models. The algorithm can handle low temperatures and strong couplings without encountering a sign problem.
We study a Co-benzene sandwich molecule bridging the tips of a Cu nanocontact as a realistic model of correlated molecular transport. To this end we employ a recently developed method for calculating the correlated electronic structure and transport properties of nanoscopic conductors. When the molecule is slightly compressed by the tips of the nanocontact the dynamic correlations originating from the strongly interacting Co 3d shell give rise to an orbital Kondo effect while the usual spin Kondo effect is suppressed due to Hund's rule coupling. This non-trivial Kondo effect produces a sharp a…
To clarify a key role of $f$ orbitals in the emergence of antiferro-quadrupole structure in PrPb$_{3}$, we investigate the ground-state property of an orbital-degenerate Kondo lattice model by numerical diagonalization techniques. In PrPb$_{3}$, Pr$^{3+}$ has a $4f^{2}$ configuration and the crystalline-electric-field ground state is a non-Kramers doublet $Γ_{3}$. In a $j$-$j$ coupling scheme, the $Γ_{3}$ state is described by two local singlets, each of which consists of two $f$ electrons with one in $Γ_{7}$ and another in $Γ_{8}$ orbitals. Since in a cubic structure, $Γ_{7}$ has localized na…
We consider Kondo impurity systems with multiple local orbitals, such as rare earth ions in a metallic host or multi--level quantum dots coupled to metallic leads. It is shown that the multiplet structure of the local orbitals leads to multiple Kondo peaks above the Fermi energy $E_F$, and to ``shadow'' peaks below $E_F$. We use a slave boson mean field theory, which recovers the strong coupling Fermi liquid fixed point, to calculate the Kondo peak positions, widths, and heights analytically at T=0, and NCA calculations to fit the temperature dependence of high--resolution photoemission spectr…
A scenario for the formation of symmetry protected non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) Kondo effect (KE) with spin variable enumerating Kondo channels is suggested and worked out. In doubly occupied symmetric triple quantum dot within parallel geometry, the NFL low-energy regime arises provided the device possesses both source-drain and left-right parity. Kondo screening follows a multistage renormalization group mechanism: reduction of the energy scale is accompanied by the change of the relevant symmetry group from SO(8) to SO(5). At low energy, three phases compete: 1) under-screening spin triplet (conv…
We report the first experimental realization of orbital two-channel Kondo (2CK) effect from two-level systems (TLSs) in epitaxial L10-MnAl films with giant perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. The resistivity exhibits a low-temperature (T) upturn with a clear transition from a lnT-dependence to T1/2-dependence and deviation from it in three distinct T regimes, which are independent of applied magnetic fields. The magnitudes of Kondo temperature and energy splitting of the TLSs are greatly enhanced in comparison to those in other systems exhibiting orbital 2CK, suggesting strong coupling between …
We investigate the orbital origin of the Fano-Kondo line shapes measured in STM spectroscopy of magnetic adatoms on metal substrates. To this end we calculate the low-bias tunnel spectra of a Co adatom on the (001) and (111) Cu surfaces with our density functional theory-based ab initio transport scheme augmented by local correlations. In order to associate different $d$-orbitals with different Fano line shapes we only correlate individual $3d$-orbitals instead of the full Co $3d$-shell. We find that Kondo peaks arising in different $d$-levels indeed give rise to different Fano features in the…
We study transport properties of a charge qubit coupling two chiral Luttinger liquids, realized by two antidots placed between the edges of an integer $ν=1$ or fractional $ν=1/3$ quantum Hall bar. We show that in the limit of a large capacitive coupling between the antidots, their quasiparticle occupancy behaves as a pseudo-spin corresponding to an orbital Kondo impurity coupled to a chiral Luttinger liquid, while the inter antidot tunnelling acts as an impurity magnetic field. The latter tends to destabilize the Kondo fixed point for the $ν=1/3$ fractional Hall state, producing an effective i…
We discuss how the properties of a single-channel Kondo lattice model are modified by additional screening channels. Contrary to current wisdom, additional screening channels appear to constitute a relevant perturbation which destabilizes the Fermi liquid. When a heavy Fermi surface develops, it generates zero modes for Kondo singlets to fluctuate between screening channels of different symmetry, producing a divergent composite pair susceptibility. Additional screening channels couple to these divergent fluctuations, promoting an instability into a state with long-range composite order.
Peculiarity of the Kondo effect in Ce$_x$La$_{1-x}$B$_6$ is investigated on the basis of the scaling equations up to third order. For the case where the $f^1$-$f^2$ charge fluctuation enters in addition to the $f^1$-$f^0$ one, the effective exchange interaction becomes anisotropic with respect to the orbital pseudospins which represent the two different orbitals in the $Γ_8$ ground state. Because of different characteristic energies for electric and magnetic tensors, scaling with the single Kondo temperature does not apply to physical quantities such as the resistivity and magnetic susceptibil…
A novel type of symmetry breaking is reported for the two-channel Kondo lattice where conduction electrons have spin and orbital (channel) degrees of freedom. Using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo and the dynamical mean-field theory, a spontaneous breaking of the orbital symmetry is observed. The tiny breakdown of orbital occupation number, however, vanishes if the conduction electrons have the particle-hole symmetry. The proper order parameter instead is identified as a composite quantity representing the orbital-selective Kondo effect. The single-particle spectrum of the selected orb…
The experimental existence and stability of the quantum criticality point of the two-channel Kondo (2CK) effect displaying exotic non-Fermi liquid physics has been buried in persistent confusion despite the intensive theoretical and experimental efforts in past three decades. Here we report an experimental realization of the two-level system scattering-induced orbital 2CK effect in a ferromagnetic L10-MnGa film, which is signified by a magnetic field-independent resistivity upturn that has a logarithmic and square-root temperature dependence beyond and below the Kondo temperature of ~14.5 K, r…
We investigate the electronic structure of cobalt atoms on a copper surface and in a copper host by combining density functional calculations with a numerically exact continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo treatment of the five-orbital impurity problem. In both cases we find low energy resonances in the density of states of all five Co $d$-orbitals. The corresponding self-energies indicate the formation of a Fermi liquid state at low temperatures. Our calculations yield the characteristic energy scale -- the Kondo temperature -- for both systems in good agreement with experiments. We quantify the…
Emergence of odd-frequency s-wave superconductivity is demonstrated in the two-channel Kondo lattice by means of the dynamical mean-field theory combined with the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. Around half filling of the conduction bands, divergence of an odd-frequency pairing susceptibility is found, which signals instability toward the superconductivity. The corresponding order parameter is equivalent to a staggered composite-pair amplitude with even frequencies, which involves both localized spins and conduction electrons. A model wave function is constructed for the composite …
The heavy fermion state with Kondo-hybridization (KH), usually manifested in f-electron systems with lanthanide or actinide elements, was recently discovered in several 3d transition metal compounds without f-electrons. However, KH has not yet been observed in 4d/5d transition metal compounds, since more extended 4d/5d orbitals do not usually form flat bands that supply localized electrons appropriate for Kondo pairing. Here, we report a doping- and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission study on 4d Ca2-xSrxRuO4, which shows the signature of KH. We observed a spectral weight transf…
The optical conductivity of the double exchange and the orbital degenerate Kondo lattice Hamiltonian (orbital t-J model) are invetigated by means of finite temperature diagonalization for different doping concentrations. The temperature dependence of sum rules, kinetic energy and Drude weight are studied. In particular it is shown that the double exchange model cannot explain the anomalous absorption in the uniform ferromagnetic phase of manganites discovered Okimoto et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 75, 109 (1995)]. The orbital t-J model explains the increase of the anomalous absorption with decreasin…
We show that a Kondo-type model with an orbital degeneracy has a new non-Fermi-liquid fixed point. Near the fixed point the spin degrees of freedom are completely quenched, and the residual charge degrees of freedom lead to the multi-channel Kondo effect. Anomalous behavior appears in electric and thermal properties, but the magnetic susceptibility should show the local Fermi-liquid behavior. The non-Fermi-liquid fixed point becomes unstable against perturbations breaking the particle-hole symmetry. We derive these results using the third-order scaling for a spherically symmetric model with a …
Due to the separation between the spin and the orbital screening scales, the normal state of Hund's metals at ambient temperature can be loosely characterized as a partially coherent state with fluctuating spins and quenched orbital moments. With the aim to characterize this situation more precisely, we investigate the Kondo-Kanamori impurity model that describes the low-energy local physics of three-orbital Hund's metals occupied by two or four electrons. Within this model one can diminish the mixed spin-orbital terms and thereby enhance the separation between the two screening scales, allowi…
Peculiar property of electronic order is clarified for the two-channel Kondo lattice. With two conduction electrons per site, the order parameter is a composite quantity involving both local and itinerant degrees of freedom. In contrast to the ordinary Kondo lattice, a heavy electron band is absent above the transition temperature, but is rapidly formed below it. The change of entropy associated with the ordering is found to be close to $\ln \sqrt 2$ per site. This entropy corresponds to the residual entropy in a two-channel Kondo impurity, which has been regarded as due to localized free Majo…
Entanglement of spin and orbital Kondo effect is investigated on the basis of a Kondo-type exchange model with twofold orbital degeneracy. By using Wilson's numerical renormalization-group method, we examine dynamical and thermal properties respecting the difference in time-reversal property of multipole operators. In the presence of particle-hole symmetry, the model has a new non-Fermi-liquid fixed point with a fractional entropy. The spectral intensity of the quadrupole susceptibility diverges in the zero-frequency limit, while the dipole susceptibility shows a Fermi-liquid-like behavior. Th…
It has been a great challenge to explore many-body effects in heavy fermion systems with $ab$-$initio$ approaches. We computed the electronic structure of UTe$_{2}$ without purposive judgements, such as intentional selection of on-site Coulomb interaction and disregarding spin-orbit coupling. We show that U-5$f$ electrons are highly localized in the paramagnetic normal state, giving rise to the Kondo effect. It is also found that the hybridization between U-5$f$ and U-6$d$ predominantly in the orthorhombic $ab$-plane is responsible for the high-temperature Kondo effect. In contrast, the hybrid…
Many correlated metallic materials are described by Landau Fermi-liquid theory at low energies, but for Hund metals the Fermi-liquid coherence scale $T_{\text{FL}}$ is found to be surprisingly small. In this Letter, we study the simplest impurity model relevant for Hund metals, the three-channel spin-orbital Kondo model, using the numerical renormalization group (NRG) method and compute its global phase diagram. In this framework, $T_{\text{FL}}$ becomes arbitrarily small close to two new quantum critical points (QCPs) which we identify by tuning the spin or spin-orbital Kondo couplings into t…
We study an impurity Anderson model to describe an iron phthalocyanine (FePc) molecule on Au(111), motivated by previous results of scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and theoretical studies. The model hybridizes a spin doublet consisting in one hole at the $3d_{z^2}$ orbital of iron and two degenerate doublets corresponding to one hole either in the $3d_{xz}$ or in the $3d_{yz}$ orbital (called $π$ orbitals) with two degenerate Hund-rule triplets with one hole in the $3d_{z}$ orbital and another one in a $π$ orbital. We solve the model using a slave-boson mean-field approximation (SBMFA). …
A particle-hole symmetric Anderson impurity model with a metallic host of narrow bandwidth is studied within the framework of the local moment approach. The resultant single-particle spectra are compared to unrestricted Hartree-Fock, second order perturbation theory about the noninteracting limit, and Lanczos spectra by Hofstetter and Kehrein. Rather accurate analytical results explain the spectral evolution over almost the entire range of interactions. These encompass, in particular, a rationale for the four-peak structure observed in the low-energy sector of the Lanczos spectra in the modera…
We investigate the thermopower due to the orbital Kondo effect in a single quantum dot system by means of the noncrossing approximation. It is elucidated how the asymmetry of tunneling resonance due to the orbital Kondo effect affects the thermopower under gate-voltage and magnetic-field control.
Two-level systems (TLS) interacting with conduction electrons are possibly described by the two-channel Kondo Hamiltonian. In this case the channel degeneracy is due to the real spin of the electrons. The possibility of breaking that degeneracy has interest on his own. In fact, we show that the interaction of the conduction electrons with a spin-orbit scatterer nearby the TLS leads to the breaking of the channel degeneracy only in the case of electron-hole symmetry breaking. The generated channel symmetry breaking TLS-electron couplings are, however, too weak to result in any observable effect…
Motivated by a collection of experimental results indicating the strongly correlated nature of the ferromagnetic metallic state of $CrO_{2}$, we present results based on a combination of the actual bandstructure [3] with dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) for the multi-orbital case. In striking contrast with LSDA(+U) [3] and model many-body approaches [14], much better semiquantitative agreement with (i) recent photoemission results, (ii) domain of applicability of the half-metal concept, and (iii) thermodynamic and dc transport data, is obtained within a single picture. Our approach has broad…
We study the Kondo effect in a single quantum dot system with two or three orbitals by using the Bethe-ansatz exact solution at zero temperature and the non-crossing approximation at finite temperatures. For the two-orbital Kondo effect, the conductance is shown to be constant at absolute zero in any magnetic fields, but decrease monotonically with increasing fields at finite temperatures. In the case with more orbitals, the conductance increases at absolute zero, while it features a maximum structure as a function of the magnetic field at finite temperatures. We discuss how these characterist…
We study the quasiparticle spectrum in an underscreened Kondo-lattice (KL) model that involves a single spin degenerate conduction band and two crystalline-electric-field (CEF) split Kramers doublets coupled by both orbital-diagonal and non-diagonal exchange interactions. We find the three quasiparticle bands of the model using a constrained fermionic mean field approach. While two bands are similar to the one-orbital model a new genuinely heavy band inside the main hybridization gap appears in the quasiquartet model. Its dispersion is due to effective hybridization with conduction states but …
We consider spin and orbital Kondo effect in a parallel arrangement of two strongly electrostatically coupled quantum dots. Increasing the exchange of electrons between the dots through the attached leads induces a smooth crossover between SU(4) spin- and orbital Kondo effect and SU(2) spin Kondo effect. Being the same for the SU(4) and SU(2) symmetry points, the Kondo temperature drops slightly in the intermediate regime. Experimentally, two kinds of Kondo effect can be discriminated by the sensitivity to the suppression of the spin Kondo effect by Zeeman field. The dependence of the Kondo te…
We discuss the possibility of a co-operative Kondo effect driven by channel interference in a Kondo lattice where local moments are coupled to a single Fermi sea via two orthogonal scattering channels. In this situation, the channel quantum number is not conserved. We argue that the absence of channel conservation causes the Kondo effect in the two channels to constructively interfere, giving rise to a superconducting condensate of composite pairs, formed between the local moments and the conduction electrons. Our arguments are based on the observation that a heavy Fermi surface gives rise to …
We study the thermopower and some related transport quantities due to the orbital Kondo effect in a single quantum dot system with a finite value of Coulomb repulsion by means of the noncrossing approximation applied to the multiorbital impurity Anderson model. It is elucidated how the asymmetry of the renormalized tunneling resonance due to the two-orbital Kondo effect causes characteristic behavior of the thermopower at finite temperatures under gate-voltage and magnetic-field control, which is compared with that of the ordinary spin Kondo effect.
We investigate the quantum transport through Kondo impurity assuming both a large number of orbital channels $\mathcal K$$\gg $$1$ for the itinerant electrons and a semi-classical spin ${\cal S}$ $\gg $ $1$ for the impurity. The non-Fermi liquid regime of the Kondo problem is achieved in the overscreened sector $\mathcal K>2\mathcal{S}$. We show that there exist two distinct semiclassical regimes for the quantum transport through impurity: i) $\mathcal K$ $\gg$ $\mathcal S$ $\gg$ $1$, differential conductance vanishes and ii) $\mathcal S$$/$$\mathcal K{=}\mathcal C$ with $ 0$$<$$\mathcal C$$<$…
The interaction between an atom moving in a model double-well potential and the conduction electrons is treated using renormalization group methods in next-to-leading logarithmic order. A large number of excited states is taken into account and the Kondo temperature $T_K$ is computed as a function of barrier parameters. We find that for special parameters $T_K$ can be close to $1 {\rm K}$ and it can be of the same order of magnitude as the renormalized splitting $Δ$. However, in the perturbative regime we always find that $T_K \alt Δ$ with a $T_K \alt 1 {\rm K}$ [Aleiner {\em et al.}, Phys. Re…
We discuss a role of the localized $π$ orbital, which exists around the defect, on the defect-induced Kondo effect in graphene by a numerical renormalization group study. We find that the localized $π$ orbital assists this Kondo effect, and the Kondo temperature is sensitive to the broadening of the localized $π$ orbital. Secondly, we focus on the negative magnetoresistance of this Kondo effect. In the experimental result, it has been shown that the negative magnetoresistance is ten times larger than the usual Kondo effect. In order to clarify the mechanism of the "magnetic sensitive" Kondo ef…
Novel electronic phenomena frequently form in heavy fermions as a consequence of the mutual nature of localization and itineracy of f electrons. On the magnetically ordered side of the heavy fermion phase diagram, f moments are expected to be localized and decoupled from the Fermi surface. It remains ambiguous whether a Kondo lattice can develop inside the magnetically ordered phase. Using spectroscopic imaging with the scanning tunneling microscope, complemented by neutron scattering, x ray absorption spectroscopy, and dynamical mean field theory, we probe the electronic states in the antifer…
Using the natural orbitals renormalization group, we studied the problem of a localized spin- 1/2 impurity coupled to two helical liquids via the Kondo interaction in a quantum spin Hall insulator, based on the Kane-Mele model defined in a finite zigzag graphene nanoribbon. We investigated the influence of the Kondo couplings with the helical liquids on both the static and dynamic properties of the ground state. The number and distinct spatial structures of the active natural orbitals (ANOs), which play essential roles in constructing the ground-state wave function, were first analyzed. Our nu…
Orbital Kondo effect in a system of two single-level quantum dots attached to external electron reservoirs is considered theoretically. The dots are coupled via direct hoping term and Coulomb interaction. The Kondo temperature is evaluated from the scaling approach and slave boson technique. The later method is also used to calculate linear conductance of the system. Nonlinear conductance, in turn, is calculated in terms of the nonequilibrium Green function formalism.
The enhanced spin Hall effect in Au metal due to the resonant skew scattering is studied with first-principles band structure calculations. Especially the gigantic spin Hall angle $γ_S \cong 0.1$ observed recently (T.Seki et al., Nature Materials {\bf 7}, 125 (2008)) is attributed to the orbital-dependent Kondo effect of Fe in the Au host metal, where the $t_{2g}$-orbitals are in the mixed-valence region while $e_g$-orbitals are in the Kondo limit. The enhanced spin-orbit interaction by the electron correlation in the $t_{2g}$-orbitals leads to the gigantic spin Hall effect. Impurities with 5d…
We study the Kondo effect and related transport properties in orbitally degenerate vertical quantum dot systems with plural electrons. Applying the non-crossing approximation to the three-orbital Anderson impurity model with the finite Coulomb interaction and Hund-coupling, we investigate the magnetic-field dependence of the conductance and thermopower. We also introduce an additional orbital splitting to take account of the realistic many-body effect in the vertical quantum dot system. It is clarified how the three-orbital Kondo effect influences the transport properties via the modulation of…
We study the three-orbital Kondo effect in quantum dot (QD) systems by applying the non-crossing approximation to the three-orbital Anderson impurity model. By investigating the tunneling conductance through a QD, we show that the competition between the Hund-coupling and the orbital level-splitting gives rise to characteristic behavior in transport properties. It is found that the Hund-coupling becomes more important in the three-orbital case than in the two-orbital case. We also show that the enhancement of Kondo temperature due to the singlet-triplet mechanism suggested for the two-orbital …
