We are concerned with the Cauchy problem for the KdV equation on the whole line with an initial profile V_0 which is decaying sufficiently fast at +\infty and arbitrarily enough (i.e., no decay or pattern of behavior) at -\infty. We show that this system is completely integrable in a very strong sense. Namely, the solution V(x,t) admits the Hirota τ-function representation
V(x,t)=-2\partial_{x}^2 logdet(I+M_{x,t})
where M_{x,t} is a Hankel integral operator constucted from certain scattering and spectral data suitably defined in terms of the Titchmarsh-Weyl m-functions associated with the two half-line Schrödinger operators corresponding to V_0. We show that V(x,t) is real meromorphic with respect to x for any t>0. We also show that under a very mild additional condition on V_0 representation implies a strong well-posedness of the KdV equation with such V_0's. Among others, our approach yields some relevant results due to Cohen, Kappeler, Khruslov, Kotlyarov, Venakides, Zhang and others.
In this paper, some notes of the homogeneous balance (HB) method are discussed by a kind of general fifth-order KdV (fKdV) equation. Frist, the auto-Bäcklund transformation and lax represents of the higher-order KdV equation(a specific forms of fKdV equation) are obtained by the HB method. Then, the connection of the Hirota transformation and the HB method is discussed by two specific fKdV equations: the Sawada-Kotera equation and the Lax's equation. At the same time, the solitary wave solution of the general fifth-order KdV equation is obtained.
It has been unknown whether Hirota's discrete Korteweg-de Vries equation and the lattice sine-Gordon equation have the consistency around a cube (CAC) property. In this paper, we show that they have the CAC property. Moreover, we also show that they can be extended to systems on the 3-dimensional integer lattice.
We study the integrability of a family of birational maps obtained as reductions of the discrete Hirota equation, which are related to travelling wave solutions of the lattice KdV equation. In particular, for reductions corresponding to waves moving with rational speed N/M on the lattice, where N,M are coprime integers, we prove the Liouville integrability of the maps when N + M is odd, and prove various properties of the general case. There are two main ingredients to our construction: the cluster algebra associated with each of the Hirota bilinear equations, which provides invariant (pre)sym…
Writing the Hirota-Satsuma (HS) system of equations in a symmetrical form we find its local and new nonlocal reductions. It turns out that all reductions of the HS system are Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), complex KdV, and new nonlocal KdV equations. We obtain one-soliton solutions of these KdV equations by using the method of Hirota bilinearization.
We consider a system of two coupled KdV equations (one for left-movers, the other for right-movers) and investigate its ultra-relativistic and non-relativistic limits in the sense of BMS$_3$/GCA$_2$ symmetry. We show that there is no local ultra-relativistic limit of the system with positive energy, regardless of the coupling constants in the original relativistic Hamiltonian. By contrast, local non-relativistic limits with positive energy exist, provided there is a non-zero coupling between left- and right-movers. In these limits, the wave equations reduce to Hirota-Satsuma dynamics (of type …
In this work, we mainly consider the Cauchy problem for the reverse space-time nonlocal Hirota equation with the initial data rapidly decaying in the solitonless sector. Start from the Lax pair, we first construct the basis Riemann-Hilbert problem for the reverse space-time nonlocal Hirota equation. Furthermore, using the approach of Deift-Zhou nonlinear steepest descent, the explicit long-time asymptotics for the reverse space-time nonlocal Hirota is derived. For the reverse space-time nonlocal Hirota equation, since the symmetries of its scattering matrix are different with the local Hirota …
We study to unify soliton systems, KdV/mKdV/sinh-Gordon, through SO(2,1) $\cong$ GL(2,$\mathbb R$) $\cong$ Möbius group point of view, which might be a keystone to exactly solve some special non-linear differential equations. If we construct the $N$-soliton solutions through the KdV type Bäcklund transformation, we can transform different KdV/mKdV/sinh-Gordon equations and the Bäcklund transformations of the standard form into the same common Hirota form and the same common Bäcklund transformation except the equation which has the time-derivative term. The difference is only the time-dependenc…
In order to find higher dimensional integrable models, we study differential equations of hyperelliptic $\wp$ functions up to genus four. For genus two, differential equations of hyperelliptic $\wp$ functions can be written in the Hirota form. If the genus is more than one, we have KdV equation. If the genus is more than two, we have KdV and another KdV equations. If the genus becomes more than three, there appear differential equations which cannot be written in the Hirota form, which means that the Hirota form is not enough to characterize the integrable differential equations. We have shown…
Hirota's discrete KdV equation is an integrable partial difference equation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$, which approaches the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation in a continuum limit. In this paper, we show that its multiplicative-discrete versions have the special solutions given by the solutions of $q$-Painlevé equations of types $A_J^{(1)}$ $(J=3,4,5,6)$.
Hirota bilinear form and soliton solutions for super-KdV of Kuperschmidt (Kuper-KdV) are given. It is shown that even though the collision of supersolitons is more complicated than in the case of supersymmetric KdV of Manin-Radul, the asymptotic effect of the interaction is simpler. As a physical application it is shown that the well known FPU problem having a phonon-mediated interaction of some internal degrees of freedom expressed through grassmann fields, goes to the Kuper-KdV equation in a multiple-scale approach.
We study the nonlocal modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equations obtained from AKNS scheme by Ablowitz-Musslimani type nonlocal reductions. We first find soliton solutions of the coupled mKdV system by using the Hirota direct method. Then by using the Ablowitz-Musslimani reduction formulas, we find one-, two-, and three-soliton solutions of local and nonlocal complex mKdV and mKdV equations. The soliton solutions of these equations are of two types. We give one-soliton solutions of both types and present only first type of two- and three-soliton solutions. We illustrate our soliton solutions …

The celebrated (1+1)-dimensional Korteweg de-Vries (KdV) equation and its (2+1)-dimensional extention, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation, are two of the most important models in physical science. The KP hierarchy is explicitly written out by means of the linearized operator of the KP equation. A novel (2+1)-dimensional KdV extension, the cKP3-4 equation, is obtained by combining the third member (KP3, the usual KP equation) and the fourth member (KP4) of the KP hierarchy. The integrability of the cKP3-4 equation is guaranteed by the existence of the Lax pair and dual Lax pair. The cKP3-…
Acoustic solitons obtained through a reductive perturbation scheme are normally governed by a Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation. In multispecies plasmas at critical compositions the coefficient of the quadratic nonlinearity vanishes. Extending the analytic treatment then leads to a modified KdV (mKdV) equation, which is characterized by a cubic nonlinearity and is even in the electrostatic potential. The mKdV equation admits solitons having opposite electrostatic polarities, in contrast to KdV solitons which can only be of one polarity at a time. A Hirota formalism has been used to derive the t…
We establish a bilinear framework for elliptic soliton solutions which are composed by the Lamé-type plane wave factors. $τ$ functions in Hirota's form are derived and vertex operators that generate such $τ$ functions are presented. Bilinear identities are constructed and an algorithm to calculate residues and bilinear equations is formulated. These are investigated in detail for the KdV equation and sketched for the KP hierarchy. Degenerations by the periods of elliptic functions are investigated, giving rise to the bilinear framework associated with trigonometric/hyperbolic and rational func…
A new transformation $u=4 ({\rm ln}f)_x$ that can formulate a quintic linear equation and a pair of Hirota's bilinear equations for the (2+1)-dimensional Sawada-Kotera (2DSK) equation is reported firstly, which enables one to obtain a new hierarchy of multiple soliton solutions of the 2DSK equation. It tells a crucial fact that a nonlinear partial differential equation could possess two hierarchies of multiple soliton solutions and the 2DSK equation is the first and only one found in this paper. The quintic linear equation is solved by a pair of Hirota's bilinear equations, of which one is the…
In this letter we show that the results of degree growth (algebraic entropy) calculations for lattice equations strongly depend on the initial value problem that one chooses. We consider two problematic types of initial value configurations, one with problems in the past light-cone, the other one causing interference in the future light-cone, and apply them to Hirota's discrete KdV equation and to the discrete Liouville equation. Both of these initial value problems lead to exponential degree growth for Hirota's dKdV, the quintessential integrable lattice equation. For the discrete Liouville e…
This is an introductory course on nonlinear integrable partial differential and differential-difference equ\-a\-ti\-ons based on lectures given for students of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Higher School of Economics. The typical examples of Korteweg-de Vries (KdV), Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) and Toda lattice equations are studied in detail. We give a detailed description of the Lax representation of these equations and their hierarchies in terms of pseudo-differential or pseudo-difference operators and also of different classes of the solutions including famous soliton solut…
