We present a new theoretical approach to describe X-Ray absorption and Magnetic Circular Dichroism spectra in the presence of e-e correlation. Our approach provides an unified picture to include correlations in both charged and neutral excitations, namely in direct / inversion photoemission where electrons are removed/added, and photo absorption where electrons are promoted from core levels to empty states. We apply this approach to the prototypical case of L$_{2,3}$ edge of 3$d$ transition metals and we show that the inclusion of many body effects in the core level excitations is essential to reproduce, together with satellite structures in core level photoemission, the observed asymmetric line shapes in X-ray absorption and dichroic spectra.
X-ray absorption and its dependence on the polarization of light is a powerful tool to investigate the orbital and spin moments of magnetic materials and their orientation relative to crystalline axes. Here, we present a program for the calculation of dichroic spectra from first principles. We have implemented the calculation of x-ray absorption spectra for left and right circularly polarized light into the Wien2k code. In this package, spin-density functional theory is applied in an all-electron scheme that allows to describe both core and valence electrons on the same footing. The matrix ele…
Dichroic signals derived from the Borrmann effect and a twisted photon beam with topological charge l = 1 are formulated with an effective wavevector. The unification applies for non-magnetic and magnetic materials. Electronic degrees of freedom associated with an ion are encapsulated in multipoles previously used to interpret conventional dichroism and Bragg diffraction enhanced by an atomic resonance. A dichroic signal exploiting the Borrmann effect with a linearly polarized beam presents charge-like multipoles that include a hexadecapole. A difference between dichroic signals obtained with …
We determine the structural relaxations around paramagnetic impurities (Ti, Cr, Fe) in corundum (alpha-Al2O3), by combining x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) experiments and ab initio calculations. The structural relaxations are found to be very local. We then show that XANES is sensitive to small variations in interatomic distances within the coordination shell of the absorbing atom. The experiments were carried out on single crystals of ruby and sapphires. Linear dichroic signals are essential to characterize the geometry of the impurity site. The calculations were performed withi…
X-ray absorption spectra calculated within an effective one-electron approach have to be broadened to account for the finite lifetime of the core hole. For Green's function based methods this can be achieved either by adding a small imaginary part to the energy or by convoluting the spectra on the real axis with a Lorentzian. We demonstrate on the case of Fe K and L2,3 spectra that these procedures lead to identical results only for energies higher than few core level widths above the absorption edge. For energies close to the edge, spurious spectral features may appear if too much weight is p…
The resonant magnetic reflectivity of Co/Mg multilayers around the Co L2,3 absorption edge is simulated then measured on a specifically designed sample. The dichroic signal is obtained when making the difference between the two reflectivities measured with the magnetic field applied in two opposite directions parallel to the sample surface. The simulations show that the existence of magnetic dead layers at the interfaces between the Co and Mg layers leads to an important increase of the dichroic signal measured in the vicinity of the third Bragg peak that otherwise should be negligible. The me…
Recent x-ray absorption experiments have demonstrated the possibility to accurately monitor the magnetism of metallic hetero-structures controlled via a time-independent perturbation caused for example by a static electric field. Using a first-principles, non-equilibrium Green function scheme, we show how the measured dichroic signal for the corresponding steady-state situation can be related to the underlying electronic structure and its response to the external stimulus. The suggested approach works from the infinitesimal limit of linear response to the regime of strong electric field effect…
We determined the crystal-field split Hund's rule ground state of the non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt3Si with polarization dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and polarized neutron scattering. We are also able to give the sequence of the crystal-field states from the temperature evolution of the linear dichroic signal in the XAS. The quantitative analysis of the XAS temperature dependence together with the neutron transition energies complete the identification of the crystal-field level scheme.

The evolution of the electronic absorption edge of type I, II and III kerogen is studied by diffuse reflectance UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy. The functional form of the electronic absorption edge for all kerogens measured is in excellent agreement with the "Urbach tail" phenomenology. The Urbach decay width extracted from the exponential fit within the visible range is strongly correlated with the aliphatic/aromatic ratio in isolated kerogen, regardless of the kerogen type. No correlation is found between the decay width and the average size of aromatic clusters, which is explained in te…
Using density functional theory with the inclusion of van der Waals (vdW) interaction, we have investigated electronic energy bands, density of states, effective masses of charge carriers, and photo absorption coefficients of pseudo-cubic CH$_3$NH$_3$PbX$_3$ (X=I, Br). Our results confirm the direct bandgap of 1.49 (1.92) eV for X=I (Br) in the pseudo-cubic $Pm$ phase with lattice constant of 6.324 (5.966) Å, being agreed well with experiment and indicating the necessity of vdW correction. The calculated photo absorption coefficients for X=I (Br) have the onset at red (orange) color and the fi…
The electronic structure of high-quality van der Waals NiPS$_3$ crystals was studied using near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy (ResPES) in combination with density functional theory (DFT) approach. The experimental spectroscopic methods, being element specific, allow to discriminate between atomic contributions in the valence and conduction band density of states and give direct comparison with the results of DFT calculations. Analysis of the NEXAFS and ResPES data allows to identify the NiPS$_3$ material as a charge-transfer insulator. Obta…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the L-edge probes transitions of 2p-electrons into unoccupied d-states. Applied to transition metal atoms, this experimental technique can provide valuable information about the electronic structure of d-states. However, multiplet effects, spin-orbit coupling, a large number of possible transitions can cause a rather involved nature of 2p XAS spectra, which can often complicate extracting of information directly from them. Here, artificial neural networks trained on simulated spectra of a 2p XAS model Hamiltonian are presented that can directly determine inform…
We report on a resonant soft X-ray spectroscopy study of the electronic and magnetic structure of the cuprate-manganite interface. Polarized X-ray spectroscopy measurements taken at the Cu L edge reveal up to a five-fold increase in the dichroic signal as compared to past experimental and theoretical values. Furthermore an increase in the degree of interlayer charge transfer up to 0.25e (where e is charge of an electron) per copper ion is observed leading to a profound reconstruction in the orbital scheme for these interfacial copper ions. It is inferred that these enhancement are related to a…
Electronic structures of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O have been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Co 3d states are found to lie near the top of the O $2p$ valence band, with a peak around $\sim 3$ eV binding energy. The Co $2p$ XAS spectrum provides evidence that the Co ions in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O are in the divalent Co$^{2+}$ ($d^7$) states under the tetrahedral symmetry. Our finding indicates that the properly substituted Co ions for Zn sites will not produce the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor property.
The local electronic structure of N atoms in a diluted GaAs1-xNx (x=3%) alloy, in view of applications in optoelectronics, is determined for the first time using soft-X-ray absorption (SXA) and emission (SXE). Deviations from crystalline GaN, in particular in the conduction band, are dramatic. Employing the orbital character and elemental specificity of the SXE/SXA spectroscopies, we identify a charge transfer from the N atoms at the valence band maximum, reducing the overlap with the wavefunction in conduction band minimum, as the main factor limiting the optical efficiency of GaAs1-xNx alloy…
Long-lived photoinduced absorption and dichroism in the Ca_3Ga_{2-x}Mn_xGe_3O_{12} garnets with x < 0.06 were examined versus temperature and pumping intensity. Unusual features of the kinetics of photoinduced phenomena are indicative of the underlying electronic processes. The comparison with the case of Ca_3Mn_2Ge_3O_{12}, explored earlier by the authors, permits one to finally establish the main common mechanisms of photoinduced absorption and dichroism caused by random electric fields of photoproduced charges (hole polarons). The rate of their diffusion and relaxation through recombination…
Soft-X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies with their elemental specificity are used to determine the local electronic structure of N atoms in Ga(In)AsN diluted semiconductor alloys (N concentrations about 3%) in view of applications of such materials in optoelectronics. Deviations of the N local electronic structure in Ga(In)AsN from the crystalline state in GaN are dramatic in both valence and conduction bands. In particular, a depletion of the valence band maximum in the N local charge, taking place at the N impurities, appears as one of the fundamental origins of reduced optical eff…
X-ray absorption by matter has long been described by the famous Beer-Lambert law. Here we show how this fundamental law needs to be modified for high-intensity coherent x-ray pulses, now available at x-ray free electron lasers, due to the onset of stimulated elastic forward scattering. We present an analytical expression for the modified polarization-dependent Beer-Lambert law for the case of resonant core-to-valence electronic transitions and incident transform limited x-ray pulses. Upon transmission through a solid, the absorption and dichroic contrasts are found to vanish with increasing x…
For the first time, the dielectric response of a BaTiO3 thin film under an AC electric field is investigated using time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ti K-edge to clarify correlated contributions of each constituent atom on the electronic states. Intensities of the pre-edge eg peak and shoulder structure just below the main edge increase with an increase in the amplitude of the applied electric field, whereas that of the main peak decreases in an opposite manner. Based on the multiple scattering theory, the increase and decrease of the eg and main peaks are simulated for differ…
We present a first-principles study of electronic and magnetic properties of thin Co films on a BaTiO$_3$(001) single crystal. The crystalline structure of 1, 2, and 3 monolayer thick Co films was determined and served as input for calculations of the electronic and magnetic properties of the films. The estimation of exchange constants indicates that the Co films are ferromagnetic with a high critical temperature, which depends on the film thickness and the interface geometry. In addition, we calculated x-ray absorption spectra, related magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and linear dichroism (…
Encoded in the transient x-ray absorption (XAS) and magnetic circular (MCD) response functions resides a wealth of information of the microscopic processes of ultrafast demagnetisation. Employing state of the art first principles dynamical simulations we show that the experimentally observed energy shift of the L3 XAS peak in Ni, and the absence of a corresponding shift in the dichroic MCD response, can be explained in terms of laser induced changes in band occupation. Strikingly, we predict that for the same ultrashort pump pulse applied to Co the opposite effect will occur: a substantial shi…
As a possible alternative to organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite halide, inorganic Cs2SnI6 has drawn more and more research attention recently. In order to find more Cs2SnI6 derivatives as the potential solar cell absorber materials, I- ions in Cs2SnI6 are replaced by other halogen ions and forms the Cs2SnI6-nXn (X=F, Cl, Br; n=1~6) compounds, whose atomic structures, electronic structures and optical absorption are investigated by first principles calculation. When the alloying level n increases, the mean lattice constants, the weighted Sn-X and Cs-X bond lengths all decreases linearly; the b…
We have constructed maximally-localized Wannier functions for prototype structures of solid molecular hydrogen under pressure, starting from LDA and tight-binding Bloch wave functions. Each occupied Wannier function can be associated with two paired protons, defining a ``Wannier molecule''. The sum of the dipole moments of these ``molecules'' always gives the correct macroscopic polarization, even under strong compression, when the overlap between nearby Wannier functions becomes significant. We find that at megabar pressures the contributions to the dipoles arising from the overlapping tails …
Resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) is a spectroscopy where both the power of site selective diffraction and the power of local absorption spectroscopy regarding atomic species are combined. By virtue of the dependence on the core level state energy and the three dimensional electronic structure of the intermediate state, this technique is specially suited to study charge, orbital or spin orderings and associated crystal distortions. In the case of charge ordering, we exploit the fact that atoms with closely related site symmetries but with small charge differences exhibit resonances at slightly d…
The dielectric function of heteroepitaxial YBiO$_3$ grown on $a$-Al$_2$O$_3$ single crystals via pulsed laser deposition is determined in the spectral range from 0.03 eV to 4.5 eV by simultaneous modeling of spectroscopic ellipsometry and optical transmission data of YBiO$_3$ films of different thickness. The (111)-oriented YBiO$_3$ films are nominally unstrained and crystallize in a defective fluorite-type structure with $Fm\bar{3}m$ space group. From the calculated absorption spectrum, a direct electronic bandgap energy of 3.6(1) eV and the signature of an indirect electronic transition arou…
Influence of composition and external hydrostatic pressure on the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the CuGa1-xAlxS2 (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) chalcopyrite semiconductor was analyzed by means of the first-principles calculations. Dielectric functions and optical absorption spectra were calculated for all considered aluminum concentrations. The pressure coefficients of the calculated band gaps and position of the lowest in energy absorption peaks were extracted from the calculated results. One of the main results is that substitution of 25% of gallium by aluminum (thus forming…
We combine the effect of the electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions to study the electronic and optical properties of zb-GaN. We show that only by treating the two effects at the same time it is possible to obtain an unprecedented agreement of the zero and finite-temperature electronic gaps and absorption spectra with the experimental results. Compared to the state-of-the-art results our calculations predict a large effect on the main absorption peak position and width as well as on the overall absorption lineshape. These important modifications are traced back to the combined elec…
The popular dual electronic (Mott) and structural (Peierls) transitions in VO2 are explored using x-ray absorption spectromicroscopy with high spatial and spectral resolutions. It is found that during both heating and cooling, the electronic transition always precedes the structural Peierls transition. Between the two transitions, there are intermediate states that are spectrally isolated here.
We perform the first-principles many-body GW and Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) calculations on the two-dimensional hexagonal boron nitride (2D-hBN) to explore the effects of opposite atoms on the electronic structure and linear one-photon absorption (OPA). Five AA- and AB-stacked bilayer and eight AAB-stacked trilayer structures are considered. The AAB-stacked trilayer hBN (TL-BN) structures are constructed by mixing the AA- and AB-stacked bilayer hBN (BL-BN). We show that the GW approximation gives rise to different types (i.e., indirect or direct) of fundamental band gaps from the independen…
Toxic-free metal halide perovskites have become forefront for commercialization of the perovskite solar cells and optoelectronic devices. In the present study, for the first time we show that particular metal doping in CsGeCl3 halide can considerably enhance the absorbance both in the visible and ultraviolet light energy range. By using DFT based first principles method Mn and Ni is doped at the Ge-site of CsGeCl3 halide. We investigate the detailed structural, optical, electronic and mechanical properties of all the doped compositions theoretically. The study of optical properties exhibits th…
Ab initio calculations within the density-functional theory formalism are performed to investigate the chemical functionalization of a graphene-like monolayer of silicon - silicene - with B, N, Al or P atoms. The structural, electronic, magnetic and vibrational properties are reported. The most preferable adsorption sites are found to be valley, bridge, valley and hill site for B, N, Al and P adatoms, respectively. All the relaxed systems with adsorbed/substituted atoms exhibit metallic behaviour with strongly bonded B, N, Al, and P atoms accompanied by an appreciable electron transfer from si…
The ultrafast time-dependence of the energy absorption of covalent solids upon excitation with femtosecond laser pulses is theoretically analyzed. We use a microscopic theory to describe laser induced structural changes and their influence on the electronic properties. We show that from the time evolution of the energy absorbed by the system important information on the electronic and atomic structure during ultrafast phase transitions can be gained. Our results reflect how structural changes affect the capability of the system to absorb external energy.
Effects of coupling between an molecular exciton and a surface plasmon (exciton-plasmon coupling) on the luminescence properties of the molecule and the surface plasmons are investigated using nonequilibrium Green's function method. Molecular absorption and enhancement by molecular electronic and vibrational modes (molecular modes) lead to dip and peak structures in the luminescence spectra of the surface plasmons. The re-absorption by the surface plasmons leads to a dent structure in their luminescence spectra. It is found that the processes of the molecular absorption and the re-absorption b…
The electronic structure of few-layer graphene (FLG) samples with crystalline order was investigated experimentally by infrared absorption spectroscopy for photon energies ranging from 0.2 - 1 eV. Distinct optical conductivity spectra were observed for different samples having precisely the same number of layers. The different spectra arise from the existence of two stable polytypes of FLG, namely, Bernal (AB) stacking and rhombohedral (ABC) stacking. The observed absorption features, reflecting the underlying symmetry of the two polytypes and the nature of the associated van Hone singularitie…
We present an accurate, first-principles study of the electronic structure and absorption spectrum of bulk copper within Density Functional Theory in the Local Density Approximation (DFT-LDA), including the study of intraband transitions. We construct norm-conserving pseudopotentials (PPs) including the 3d shell (and optionally the underlying 3s and 3p shells) in the valence, and requiring a relatively small plane-waves basis (60 and 140 Rydbergs cutoff, respectively). As a consequence, these PPs are strongly non-local, yielding to macroscopically wrong results in the absorption spectrum when …
The electronic structure of the conjugated polymer, polyaniline, has been studied by resonant and nonresonant X-ray emission spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation for the excitation. The measurements were made on polyaniline and a few doped (protonated) phases for both the carbon and nitrogen contents. The resonant X-ray emission spectra show depletion of the π electron bands due to the selective excitation which enhances the effect of symmetry selection rules. The valence band structures in the X-ray emission spectra attributed to the π bands show unambiguous changes of the electronic stru…
Femtosecond core-level transient absorption spectroscopy is utilized to investigate photoinduced dynamics of the charge density wave in 1T-TiSe2 at the Ti M2,3 edge (30-50 eV). Photoexcited carriers and phonons are found to primarily induce spectral red-shifts of core-level excitations, and a carrier relaxation time and phonon heating time of approximately 360 fs and 1.0 ps are extracted, respectively. Pronounced oscillations in delay-dependent absorption spectra are assigned to coherent excitations of the optical $A_{1g}$ phonon (6.0 THz) and the $A_{1g}^*$ charge density wave amplitude mode …
We present the GGA+U calculations to investigate the electronic structure and visible light absorption of the N, B-codoped anatase TiO2. The NsBi (substitutional N, interstitial B) codoped TiO2 produces significant Ti 3d and N 2p mid-gap states when the distance of N and B atoms is far, and the NiBi (interstitial N and B) and NsBs (substitutional N and B) codoped TiO2 prefer to form localized p states at 0.3-1.2 eV above the valence band maximum. Further, the optical band edges of the three codoped systems shift slightly to the visible region, but only the far distance NsBi codoped TiO2 shows …
Measurements of x-ray emission and absorption spectra of the constituents of MgB$_2$ are presented. The results obtained are in good agreement with calculated x-ray spectra, with dipole matrix elements taken into account. The comparison of x-ray emission spectra of graphite, AlB$_2$, and MgB$_2$ in the binding energy scale supports the idea of charge transfer from $σ$ to $π$ bands, which creates holes at the top of the bonding $σ$ bands and drives the high-T$_c$
Carbon nanotubes are a fraction of the size of transistors used in today's best microchips, as it could reduce power demands and heating in next electronics revolution. Present study investigates the electronic and magnetic structure of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) synthesized by chemical vapor deposition technique using near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS) measurement at C K-edge and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at Co and Fe $L_{3,2}$ -edges. NEXAFS at C K-edge shows significant $π$-bonding, and Fe(Co) L-edge proves the presence of Co$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ in o…
Fast and inexpensive characterization of materials properties is a key element to discover novel functional materials. In this work, we suggest an approach employing three classes of Bayesian machine learning (ML) models to correlate electronic absorption spectra of nanoaggregates with the strength of intermolecular electronic couplings in organic conducting and semiconducting materials. As a specific model system, we consider PEDOT:PSS, a cornerstone material for organic electronic applications, and so analyze the couplings between charged dimers of closely packed PEDOT oligomers that are at …
We have studied the electronic structure of Li$_{1+x}$[Mn$_{0.5}$Ni$_{0.5}$]$_{1-x}$O$_2$ ($x$ = 0.00 and 0.05), one of the promising cathode materials for Li ion battery, by means of x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopy. The results show that the valences of Mn and Ni are basically 4+ and 2+, respectively. However, the Mn$^{3+}$ component in the $x$ = 0.00 sample gradually increases with the bulk sensitivity of the experiment, indicating that the Jahn-Teller active Mn$^{3+}$ ions are introduced in the bulk due to the site exchange between Li and Ni. The Mn$^{3+}$ component gets neg…
A first-principles study on the quasiparticles energy and optical absorption spectrum of fluorographene is presented by employing the GW + Bethe-Salpeter Equation (BSE) method with many-electron effects included. The calculated band gap is increased from 3.0 eV to 7.3 eV by the GW approximation. Moreover, the optical absorption spectrum of fluorographene is dominated by enhanced excitonic effects. The prominent absorption peak is dictated by bright resonant excitons around 9.0 eV that exhibit a strong charge transfer character, shedding light on the exciton condensation and relevant optoelectr…
We report the electronic structure studies of well characterized polycrystalline Zn_{1-x}Fe_xO (x = 0.0, 0.01, 0.03, and 0.05) nanorods synthesized by a co-precipitation method through x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that Fe doped ZnO crystallizes in a single phase wurtzite structure without any secondary phase. From the XRD pattern, it is observed that peak positions shift towards lower 2θvalue with Fe doping. The change in the peak positions with increase in Fe contents clearly indicates that Fe ions are replacing Zn ions in the ZnO matrix. Linear comb…
With x-ray absorption spectroscopy we investigated the orbital reconstruction and the induced ferromagnetic moment of the interfacial Cu atoms in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7}$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (YBCO/LCMO) and La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$/La$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ (LSCO/LCMO) multilayers. We demonstrate that these electronic and magnetic proximity effects are coupled and are common to these cuprate/manganite multilayers. Moreover, we show that they are closely linked to a specific interface termination with a direct Cu-O-Mn bond. We furthermore show that the intrinsic hole doping of the cuprat…
We have investigated the temperature-dependent changes in the near-$E$$_F$ occupied and unoccupied states of Pr$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ which shows the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The temperature-dependent changes in the charge and orbital degrees of freedom and associated changes in the Mn 3$d$ - O 2$p$ hybridization result in varied O 2$p$ contributions to the valence band. A quantitative estimate of the charge transfer energy ($E$$_{CT}$) shows a larger value compared to the earlier reported estimates. The charge localization causing the large $E$$_{CT}$ is di…
Chemical interaction and changes in local electronic structure of Cr, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu transition metals (TMs) upon formation of an $Al_{8}Co_{17}Cr_{17}Cu_{8}Fe_{17}Ni_{33}$ compositionally complex alloy (CCA) have been studied by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that upon CCA formation, occupancy of the Cr, Co and Ni 3d states changes and the maximum of the occupied and empty Ni 3d states density shifts away from Fermi level ($E_f$) by 0.5 and 0.6 eV, respectively, whereas the Cr 3d empty states maximum shifts towards $E_f$ by 0.3 eV, compared…
We develop the tight-binding model to study electronic and optical properties of graphane. The strong sp3 chemical bondings among the carbon and hydrogen atoms induce a special band structure and thus lead to the rich optical excitations. The absorption spectrum hardly depends on the direction of electric polarization. It ex- hibits a lot of shoulder structures and absorption peaks, which arise from the extreme points and the saddle points of the parabolic bands, respectively. The threshold op- tical excitations, only associated with the 2px and 2py orbitals of the carbon atoms, are revealed i…
The electronic structure of the magnetic semiconductor Ga$_{1-x}$Cr$_{x}$N and the effect of Si doping on it have been investigated by photoemission and soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We have confirmed that Cr in GaN is predominantly trivalent substituting for Ga, and that Cr 3$d$ states appear within the band gap of GaN just above the N 2$p$-derived valence-band maximum. As a result of Si doping, downward shifts of the core levels (except for Cr 2$p$) and the formation of new states near the Fermi level were observed, which we attribute to the upward chemical potential shift and the form…
We have examined the local 3d electronic structures of Co-Au multinuclear complexes with the medicinal molecules D-penicillaminate (D-pen) [Co{Au(PPh3)(D-pen)}2]ClO4 and [Co3{Au3(tdme)(D-pen)3}2] by Co L_2,3-edge soft X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy, where PPh3 denotes triphenylphosphine and tdme stands for 1,1,1-tris[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]ethane. The Co L_2,3-edge XAS spectra indicate the localized ionic 3d electronic states in both materials. The experimental spectra are well explained by spectral simulation for a localized Co ion under ligand fields with the full multiplet theory, w…
The effects of random distribution of magnetic impurities with concentration $x$ in a semiconductor alloy multilayer at a paramagnetic temperature are investigated by means of coherent potential approximation and tight-binding model. The change in the electronic states and the optical absorption spectrum with $x$ is calculated for weak and strong exchange interactions between carrier spins and localized spin moments on magnetic ions. We find that the density of states and optical absorption are strongly layer-dependent due to the quantum size effects. The electronic and optical spectra are bro…
Principal Hugoniot and K-shell X-ray absorption spectra of warm dense KCl are calculated using the first-principles molecular dynamics method. Evolution of electronic structures as well as the influence of the approximate description of ionization on pressure (caused by the underestimation of the energy gap between conduction bands and valence bands) in the first-principles method are illustrated by the calculation. Pressure ionization and thermal smearing are shown as the major factors to prevent the deviation of pressure from global accumulation along the Hugoniot. In addition, cancellation …
