Recent x-ray absorption experiments have demonstrated the possibility to accurately monitor the magnetism of metallic hetero-structures controlled via a time-independent perturbation caused for example by a static electric field. Using a first-principles, non-equilibrium Green function scheme, we show how the measured dichroic signal for the corresponding steady-state situation can be related to the underlying electronic structure and its response to the external stimulus. The suggested approach works from the infinitesimal limit of linear response to the regime of strong electric field effects, which is realized in present experimental high sensitivity investigations.
In a recent article, A. Chen et al. claimed that they have switched (rotated by ~90 degrees) the magnetization of the soft layer of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) in a non-volatile way with volatile strain by exploiting dipole interaction with the hard layer. I show that dipole interaction cannot cause this effect and the authors' explanation cannot be correct. An alternate explanation is offered.
We demonstrate that magnetic properties of ultra-thin Co films adjacent to Gd2O3 gate oxides can be directly manipulated by voltage. The Co films can be reversibly changed from an optimally-oxidized state with a strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy to a metallic state with an in-plane magnetic anisotropy, or to an oxidized state with nearly zero magnetization, depending on the polarity and time duration of the applied electric fields. Consequently, an unprecedentedly large change of magnetic anisotropy energy up to 0.73 erg/cm2 has been realized in a nonvolatile manner using gate voltages …
Voltage modulation of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with compactness, high speed response, energy efficiency and both practical/theoretical siginificances can be widely applied to various YIG based spintronics such as spin Hall, spin pumping, spin Seeback effects. Here we initial an ionic modulation of interfacial magnetism process on YIG/Pt bilayer heterostructures, where the Pt capping would influence the ferromagnetic (FMR) field position significantly, and realize a significant magnetism enhancement in bilayer system. A large voltage induced FMR field shifts of 690 Oe has been achieved in YIG …
We study in this paper the edge polarizations and their consequences for a biased Bernal stacked bilayer graphene nanoribbon with zigzag termination. The magnetic states are classified according to the interlayer and intralayer couplings between the edge polarizations, and the magnetic phase diagram of doping versus bias voltage is given. Coplanar magnetic phase is found and the variation of its magnetic structure with the bias voltage is investigated. For all the magnetic states, we also discuss the possibility of the half-metallicity, and for a ribbon with perfect zigzag edges we predict sev…
Voltage control of magnetism (VCM) is attracting increasing interest and exciting significant research activity driven by its profound physics and enormous potential for application. This review article aims to provide a comprehensive review of recent progress in VCM in different thin films. We first present a brief summary of the modulation of magnetism by electric fields and describe its discovery, development, classification, mechanism, and potential applications. In the second part, we focus on the classification of VCM from the viewpoint of materials, where both the magnetic medium and di…
In metal/oxide heterostructures, rich chemical, electronic, magnetic and mechanical properties can emerge from interfacial chemistry and structure. The possibility to dynamically control interface characteristics with an electric field paves the way towards voltage control of these properties in solid-state devices. Here we show that electrical switching of the interfacial oxidation state allows for voltage control of magnetic properties to an extent never before achieved through conventional magnetoelectric coupling mechanisms. We directly observe, for the first time, in situ voltage driven O…
Materials with continuous dissipation can exhibit responses and functionalities that are not possible in thermodynamic equilibrium. While this concept is well-known, a major challenge has been the implementation: how to rationally design materials with functional non-equilibrium states and quantify the dissipation? Here we address these questions for the widely used colloidal nanoparticles that convey several functionalities. We propose that useful non-equilibrium states can be realised by creating and maintaining steady-state nanoparticle concentration gradients by continuous injection and di…
We have grown epitaxial films a few atomic layers thick of iron oxides on ruthenium. We characterize the growth by low energy electron microscopy. Using selected area diffraction and intensity vs. voltage spectroscopy, we detect two distinct phases which are assigned to wustite and magnetite. Spin polarized low energy electron microscopy shows magnetic domain patterns in the magnetite phase at room temperature.
Voltage control of magnetism and spintronics have been highly desirable, but rarely realized. In this work, we show voltage-controlled spin-orbit torque (SOT) switching in W/CoFeB/MgO films with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) with voltage administered through SrTiO3 with a high dielectric constant. We show that a DC voltage can significantly lower PMA by 45%, reduce switching current by 23%, and increase the damping-like torque as revealed by the first and second-harmonic measurements. These are characteristics that are prerequisites for voltage-controlled and voltage-select SOT switc…
This review article aims at illustrating the recent progresses in the electrical control of magnetism in oxides with profound physics and enormous potential applications. In the first part, we provide a comprehensive summary of the electrical control of magnetism in the classic multiferroic heterostructures and clarify their various mechanisms lying behind. The second part focuses on the novel route of electric double layer gating for driving a significantly electronic phase transition in magnetic oxides by a small voltage. The electric field applied on the ordinary dielectric oxide in the thi…
The steady current-voltage characteristics of ferromagnet-silicon-ferromagnet channels with tunable emitter and collector polarizations are investigated in the presence of spin blockade generalizing the model developed by Pershin Yu V and Di Ventra M (2008 {\it Phys. Rev.} B {\bf 77} 073301). The dependence of the critical current on both collector and emitter polarizations is obtained analytically. It is found that the current amplitude in the channel can be effectively tuned by varying the difference between the collector and emitter ferromagnet polarizations which allows to perform the magn…
Multiferroics offer exciting opportunities for electric-field control of magnetism. Unfortunately, single-phase multiferroics suitable for such applications at room temperature has not been discovered. Here, we propose the concept of a new type of multiferroics, namely, "asymmetric multiferroic". In asymmetric multiferroics, two locally stable ferroelectric states are not symmetrically equivalent, leading to different magnetic properties between these two states. Furthermore, we predict from first-principles that a Fe-Cr-Mo superlattice with the LiNbO3-type structure is such an asymmetric mult…
Electric-field control of magnetism provides a promising route towards ultralow power information storage and sensor technologies. The effects of magneto-ionic motion have so far been prominently featured in the direct modification of interface chemical and physical characteristics. Here we demonstrate magnetoelectric coupling moderated by voltage-driven oxygen migration beyond the interface limit in relatively thick AlOx/GdOx/Co (15 nm) films. Oxygen migration and its ramifications on the Co magnetization are quantitatively mapped with polarized neutron reflectometry under thermal and electro…
Electric control of magnetism is a prerequisite for efficient and low power spintronic devices. More specifically, in heavy metal/ ferromagnet/ insulator heterostructures, voltage gating has been shown to locally and dynamically tune magnetic properties like interface anisotropy and saturation magnetization. However, its effect on interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction (DMI), which is crucial for the stability of magnetic skyrmions, has been challenging to achieve and has not been reported yet for ultrathin films. Here, we demonstrate 130% variation of DMI with electric field in Ta/FeCo…
We present a quantitative analysis of the steady state electronic transport in a resistive switching device. The device is composed of a thin film of Ag$_{2}$S (solid electrolyte) contacted by a Pt nano-contact acting as ion-blocking electrode, and a large area Ag reference electrode. When applying a bias voltage both ionic and electronic transport occurs, and depending on the polarity it causes an accumulation of ions around the nano-contact. At small applied voltages (pre-switching) we observed this as a strongly nonlinear current-voltage curve, which have been modeled using the Hebb-Wagner …
The control of magnetic properties by means of an electric field is an important aspect in magnetism and magnetoelectronics. We here utilize magnetoelastic coupling in ferromagnetic/piezoelectric hybrids to realize a voltage control of magnetization orientation at room temperature. The samples consist of polycrystalline nickel thin films evaporated onto piezoelectric actuators. The magnetic properties of these multifunctional hybrids are investigated at room temperature as a function of the voltage controlled stress exerted by the actuator on the Ni film. Ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy s…
We have stabilized the α-Fe1.6Ga0.4O3 (Ga doped α-Fe2O3) system in rhombohedral structure. The system has shown magnetically canted ferromagnetic state and ferroelectric properties at room temperature. In first time, we confirm the existence of magneto-electric coupling and multiferro-electric properties at room temperature in the Ga doped α-Fe2O3 system based on the experimental observation of magnetic field controlled electric polarization and electric field controlled magnetization. The α-Fe2O3 system does not exhibit electric field controlled magnetic exchange bias effect, where as Ga dope…
Determination of the device performance parameters of perovskite solar cells is far from trivial as transient effects may cause large discrepancies in current-voltage measurements as a function of scan rate and pre-conditioning. Maximum power point tracking, MPPT, enables to determine the steady-state maximum power conversion efficiency. However, the MPPT does not provide any information on the device performance parameters, which are reliable only if extracted from current-voltage curves collected under steady-state conditions. We show that is possible to determine the shorter settling or del…
