Measurements of x-ray emission and absorption spectra of the constituents of MgB$_2$ are presented. The results obtained are in good agreement with calculated x-ray spectra, with dipole matrix elements taken into account. The comparison of x-ray emission spectra of graphite, AlB$_2$, and MgB$_2$ in the binding energy scale supports the idea of charge transfer from $σ$ to $π$ bands, which creates holes at the top of the bonding $σ$ bands and drives the high-T$_c$
Electronic and lattice properties of MgB{$_2$} under uniaxial and hydrostatic compression are calculated. Lattice properties are optimized automatically by using the first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) method. Features of the electronic band structures under uniaxial and hydrostatic compression are quite different each other.
Possible candidates for the Mg2B3Ox nanostructures observed in bulk of polycrystalline MgB2 (Ref.1) have been studied using a combination of Z-contrast imaging, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and first-principles calculations. The electronic structures, phonon modes, and electron phonon coupling parameters are calculated for two oxygen-ordered MgB2 compounds of composition Mg2B3O and Mg2B3O2, and compared with those of MgB2. We find that the density of states for both Mg2B3Ox structures show very good agreement with EELS, indicating that they are excellent candidates to explain the o…
We present the results of fully-relaxed, full-potential electronic structure calculations for the new superconductor MgB2, and BeB2, NaB2, and AlB2, using density-functional-based methods. Our results described in terms of (i) density of states (DOS), (ii) band-structure, and (iii) the DOS and the charge density around the Fermi energy EF, clearly show the importance of B p-band for superconductivity. In particular, we show that around EF, the charge density in MgB2, BeB2 and NaB2 is planar and is associated with the B plane. For BeB2 and NaB2, our results indicate qualitative similarities but…
In order to understand the unexpected superconducting behavior of MgB$_2$ compound we have made electronic structure calculations for MgB$_2$ and closely related systems. Our calculated Debye temperature from the elastic properties indicate that the average phonon frequency is very large in MgB$_2$ compared with other superconducting intermetallics and the exceptionally high $T_c$ in this material can be explained through BCS mechanism only if phonon softening occurs or the phonon modes are highly anisotropic. We identified a doubly-degenerate quasi-two dimensional key-energy band in the vicin…
Raman spectra of the MgB2 ceramic samples were measured as a function of pressure up to 32 GPa at room temperature. The spectrum at normal conditions contains a very broad peak at ~590 cm-1 related to the E2g phonon mode. The frequency of this mode exhibits a strong linear dependence in the pressure region from 5 to 18 GPa, whereas beyond this region the slope of the pressure-induced frequency shift is reduced by about a factor of two. The pressure dependence of the phonon mode up to ~ 5GPa exhibits a change in the slope as well as a "hysteresis" effect in the frequency vs. pressure behavior. …
Non-resonant microwave absorption(NRMA) studies of superconducting MgB_2 at a frequency of 9.43 GHz in the field range -50 Gauss to 5000 Gauss are reported. The NRMA results indicate near absence of intergranular weak links. A linear temperature dependence of the lower critical field H_c1 is observed indicating a non s-wave superconductivity. However, the phase reversal of the NRMA signal which could suggest d-wave symmetry is also not observed.
Infrared absorption measurements in the range of 125 to 700 cm^(-1) have been carried out as a function of temperature upto 5 K in MgB2. The absorption spectrum is characterised by a broad band centred at 485 cm^{-1}, with shoulders at 333 and 387 cm^{-1}. Studies on the temperature dependence of absorption, indicate that these modes initially harden with the lowering of temperature, and this trend is arrested at ~ 100 K, below which they soften. Further, in the case of the mode at 333 cm^{-1}, there is a distinct softening associated with the superconducting transition at 39 K. The implicatio…
We review the current situation in the theory of superconducting and transport properties of MgB2. First principle calculations of of the electronic structure and electron-phonon coupling are discussed and compared with the experiment. We also present a brief description of the multiband effects in superconductivity and transport, and how these manifest themselves in MgB2. We also mention some yet open questions.
Electronic band structure of boron-rich low-temperature superconductors UB12-like dodecaboride YB12 and CaB6-like hexaboride YB6 are investigated using the first-principle FLMTO calculations and compared with one for layered YB2 and the new "medium-Tc" superconductor MgB2 diborides.
Structures for realizing hole-doped MgB$_2$ without appealing to chemical substitutions are proposed. These structures which consist of alternating MgB$_2$ and graphene layers have small excess energy compared to bulk graphite and MgB$_2$. Density functional theory based first-principles electronic structure calculations show significant charge transfer from the MgB$_2$ layer to graphene, resulting in effectively hole-doped MgB$_2$. Substantial enhancement in the density of states at the Fermi level of the proposed structure is predicted.
First principles FLMTO-GGA electronic structure calculations of the new medium-$T_C$ superconductor (MTSC) $MgB_2$ and related diborides indicate that superconductivity in these compounds is related to the the existence of $p_{x,y}$-band holes at the $Γ$ point. Based on these calculations, we explain the absence of medium-$T_C$ superconductivity for $BeB_2$, $AlB_2$ $ScB_2$ and $YB_2$. The simulation of a number of $MgB_2$-based ternary systems using a supercell approach demonstrates that (i) the electron doping of $MgB_2$ (i.e., $MgB_{2-y}X_y$ with X=Be, C, N, O) and the creation of isoelectr…
This paper contains both recently published and original results concerning the electronic structure, bonding and relevant properties of (Mg-Al)B2. We analyse the electronic structure formation of bulk and surface states, study the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates, compare the theoretical and experimental estimates of the density of states at the Fermi level, and review the electron-phonon coupling calculations. The analysis of optical properties of MgB2 and AlB2 is also provided.
We show how intrinsic material properties modify light transmission through subwavelength hole arrays on thin metallic films in the THz regime. We compare the temperature-dependent transmittance of Au films and MgB$_{2}$ films. The experimental data is consistent with analytical calculations, and is attributed to the temperature change of the conductivity of both films. The transmission versus conductivity is interpreted within the open resonator model when taking the skin depth into consideration. We also show that the efficiency of this temperature control depends on the ratio of the transmi…
We present a comparison of electronic structure of MgB2 and TaB2, the two new superconductors, as well as VB2, calculated using full-potential, density- functional-based methods in P6/mmm crystal structure. Our results, described in terms of (i) density of states (DOS), (ii) band-structure, and (iii) the DOS and the electronic charge density in a small energy window around the Fermi energy EF. In particular, the charge density around EF in MgB2 and TaB2 show striking similarity as far as the B plane is concerned. A comparison of their band-structures, coupled with l-character analysis, indicat…
The lattice parameters of MgB2 up to pressures of 8 GPa were determined using high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction in a diamond anvil cell. The bulk modulus, B0, was determined to be 151 +-5 GPa. Both experimental and first-principles calculations indicate nearly isotropic mechanical behavior under pressure. This small anisotropy is in contrast to the 2 dimensional nature of the boron pi states. The pressure dependence of the density of states at the Fermi level and a reasonable value for the average phonon frequency account within the context of BCS theory for the reduction of Tc under pr…
We analyze the qualitative features in the transition spectra of a model superconductor with multiple energy gaps, using a simple extension of the Mattis-Bardeen expression for probes with case I and case II coherence factors. At temperature T = 0, the far infrared absorption edge is, as expected, determined by the smallest gap. However, the large thermal background may mask this edge at finite temperatures and instead the secondary absorption edges found at Delta_i+Delta_j may become most prominent. At finite T, if certain interband matrix elements are large, there may also be absorption peak…
We report a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) study of the electronic structure of Al doped crystals of MgB$_2$. We have measured crystals with $\sim 7.5$% Al which have a $T_c$ of 33.6 K, ($\sim 14$% lower than pure MgB$_2$). dHvA frequencies for the $σ$ tube orbits in the doped samples are lower than in pure MgB$_2$, implying a $16\pm2%$ reduction in the number of holes in this sheet of Fermi surface. The mass of the quasiparticles on the larger $σ$ orbit is lighter than the pure case indicating a reduction in electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$. These observations are compared with band structure…
Understanding the superconducting properties of MgB_2 is based strongly on knowledge of its electronic structure. In this paper we review experimental measurements of the Fermi surface parameters of pure and Al-doped MgB_2 using the de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect. In general, the measurements are in excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions of the electronic structure, including the strength of the electron-phonon coupling on each Fermi surface sheet. For the Al doped samples, we are able to measure how the band structure changes with doping and again these are in excellent agreem…
The remarkable field dependence of the electronic thermal conductivity observed in MgB_2 can be explained as a consequence of multi-gap superconductivity. A key point is that for moderately clean samples, the mean free path becomes comparable to coherence length of the smaller gap over its entire Fermi surface. In this case, quasiparticle excitations bound in vortex cores can easily be delocalized causing a rapid rise in the thermal conductivity at low magnetic fields. This feature is in marked contrast to that for anisotropic or nodal gaps, where delocalization occurs only on part of the Ferm…
The first angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy results from MgB$_2$ single crystals are reported. Close to the $Γ$K and $Γ$M directions, three distinct dispersions are observed approaching the Fermi energy, as can be assigned to the theoretically predicted $σ$ (B $2p_{x,y}$) and $π$ (B $2p_z$) bands. In addition, we also observed a small parabolic-like band centered around $Γ$, and attributed it to a surface-derived state. Good agreement between our results and the band calculations suggests that the electronic structure of MgB$_2$ is of a conventional nature, thus implying that electron …
The electronic properties of the carbon substituted MgB$_2$ single crystals are reported. The carbon substitution drops T$_c$ below 2 K. In-plane resistivity shows a remarkable increase in residual resistivity by C-substitution, while the change of in-plane/out-of-plane Hall coefficients is rather small. Raman scattering spectra indicate that the E$_{2g}$-phonon frequency radically hardens with increasing the carbon-content, suggesting the weakening of electron-phonon coupling. Another striking C-effect is the increases of the second critical fields in both in-plane and out-of-plane directions…
We report measurements of the superconducting critical temperature Tc of polycrystalline MgB2 samples containing isotopically pure (10)B and (11)B under quasi-hydrostatic pressure conditions in He pressure media up to 44 GPa. Measurements to volume compressions V/V_0 ~ 0.82 allow us to observe a kink in the volume dependence of Tc for Mg(10)B2 (at 20 GPa) and Mg(11)B2 (at 15 GPa). The pressure dependence of the E(2g) mode also changes abruptly around 20 GPa for the Mg(10)B2 sample. The anharmonic character of the E(2g) phonon mode and anomalies in Tc pressure dependence are interpreted as the …
We report a detailed study of the electronic and structural properties of the 39K superconductor \mgbtwo and of several related systems of the same family, namely \mgalbtwo, \bebtwo, \casitwo and \cabesi. Our calculations, which include zone-center phonon frequencies and transport properties, are performed within the local density approximation to the density functional theory, using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) and the norm-conserving pseudopotential methods. Our results indicate essentially three-dimensional properties for these compounds; however, strongly two-…
NMR spectra and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ of $^{11}$B have been measured in superconducting polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ with $T_C^{ons}\cong 39.5K$. It is shown that $(T_{1}T)^{-1}$ and the Knight shift $K_{s}$ are independent of temperature and nearly isotropic above $T_C$. Both of these quantities are decreased gradually in going to superconducting state. According NMR data the density of states (DOS) near the Fermi level is flat at the scale $\approx$ 500K. Some conclusions on the orbital content of the DOS at the Fermi level was done and compared with the results of the…
We investigate the vortex state in a two-band superconductor with strong intraband and weak interband electronic scattering rates. Coupled Usadel equations are solved numerically and the distributions of the pair potentials and local densities of states are calculated for two bands at different values of magnetic fields. The existence of two distinct length scales corresponding to different bands is demonstrated. The results provide qualitative interpretation of recent STM experiments on vortex structure imaging in MgB_2.
Polarisation-resolved Raman scattering measurements were performed on MgB_2 single crystals to determine the magnitude, symmetry and temperature dependence of the superconducting gap. A single sharp peak due to Cooper pair breaking appears in the electronic continuum below Tc, reaching an average maximum Raman shift of 105 +/- 1 cm^{-1} (2 Delta(0) / k_{B}Tc = 3.96 +/- 0.09) and showing up to 5 cm^{-1} anisotropy between polarised and depolarised spectra. The temperature dependence of 2 Delta follows that predicted from BCS theory, while the anisotropy decreases with decreasing temperature. It…
The effect of electron correlation (EC) on the electronic structure in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$, is studied by examining the partial density of states (PDOS) of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ orbitals using the polarization dependence of x-ray emission and absorption spectra. The discrepancies between observed and calculated PDOSs cannot be attributed to EC effects. The present results suggest that the EC effect is less than the experimental error ($\sim$ 0.2 eV), which indirectly supports a scenario that electron-phonon interaction plays an essential role in the occurrence of superconductivity.
We report on measurements of the specific heat of the recently discovered superconductor MgB$_2$ in the temperature range between 3 and 220 K. Based on a modified Debye-Einstein model, we have achieved a rather accurate account of the lattice contribution to the specific heat, which allows us to separate the electronic contribution from the total measured specific heat. From our result for the electronic specific heat, we estimate the electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$ to be of the order of 2, significantly enhanced compared to common weak-coupling values $\leq 0.4$. Our data also indicate …
We consider a model Hamiltonian fitted on the ab-initio band structure to describe the electron-phonon coupling between the electronic $σ-$bands and the phonon E$_{2g}$ mode in MgB$_2$. The model allows for analytical calculations and numerical treatments using very large k-point grids. We calculate the phonon self-energy of the E$_{2g}$ mode along two high symmetry directions in the Brillouin zone. We demonstrate that the contribution of the $σ$ bands to the Raman linewidth of the E$_{2g}$ mode via the electron-phonon coupling is zero. As a consequence the large resonance seen in Raman experi…
We report on study of the electronic anisotropy of the newly discovered MgB2 superconductor using the in-plane resistivity measurements in magnetic field applied perpendicular and parallel to Mg and B planes of MgB2 single crystals. The results show temperature dependent anisotropy of the upper critical field with anisotropy ratio increasing from 2.2 close to Tc up to about 3 below 30K. Our estimation of the in-plane and out-of-plane coherence length of about 68A and 23A and electronic mean-free path 240A and 60A respectively indicates MgB2 single crystal as approaching clean limit type-II sup…
In present study, we report an inter-comparison of various physical and electronic properties of MgB2 and AlB2. Interestingly, the sign of S(T) is +ve for MgB2 the same is -ve for AlB2. This is consistent our band structure plots. We fitted the experimental specific heat of MgB2 to Debye Einstein model and estimated the value of Debye temperature (theta) and Sommerfeld constant (gamma) for electronic specific heat. Further, from gamma the electronic density of states (DOS) at Fermi level N(EF) is calculated. From the ratio of experimental N (EF) and the one being calculated from DFT, we obtain…
In systems having an anisotropic electronic structure, such as the layered materials graphite, graphene and cuprates, impulsive light excitation can coherently stimulate specific bosonic modes, with exotic consequences for the emergent electronic properties. Here we show that the population of E$_{2g}$ phonons in the multiband superconductor MgB$_2$ can be selectively enhanced by femtosecond laser pulses, leading to a transient control of the number of carriers in the σ-electronic subsystem. The nonequilibrium evolution of the material optical constants is followed in the spectral region sensi…
The effect of high pressure on structural and electronic properties of the novel superconductor \MB has been calculated using the full-potential linearized augmented-plane-wave method. Despite the layered crystal structure of \MB nearly isotropic compression (bulk modulus $B_0=140.1(6)$ GPa) is found with only a 1.2% decrease of the $c/a$ ratio at 10 GPa. The effect of pressure on the critical temperature has been estimated on the basis of BCS theory and good agreement with experimental data is found. Our results suggest that it is a combination of increasing phonon frequency and decreasing el…
We have studied the changes in the electronic structure and the superconducting transition temperature T_c of Mg(B_{1-x}C_{x})_{2} alloys as a function of x with 0\leq x\leq 0.3. Our density-functional-based approach uses coherent-potential approximation to describe the effects of disorder, Gaspari-Gyorffy formalism to estimate the electron-phonon matrix elements and Allen-Dynes equation to calculate T_c in these alloys. We find that the changes in the electronic structure of Mg(B_{1-x}C_{x})_{2} alloys, especially near the Fermi energy E_F, come mainly from the outward movement of E_F with in…
We report self-consistent {\it ab initio} calculations of structural and electronic properties for the B- and Mg-terminated MgB$_{2}$ (0001) surfaces. We employ ultra-soft pseudopotentials and plane wave basis sets within the generalized gradient approximation. The surface relaxations are found to be small for both B- and Mg-terminated surfaces. For the B-terminated surface, both B $σ$ and $π$ surface bands appear, while only one B $π$ surface band exists near the Fermi level for the Mg-terminated surface. The superconductivity of the MgB$_2$ surfaces is discussed. The work function is predict…
We report a detailed study of the electronic structure of the MgB$_{2}$ with different lattice constants by using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave(FPLAPW) method. It is found that the lattice parameters have great effect on the $σ$ band of Boron. Our results indicate that increasing lattice constant along the {\it c} axis will increase the density of states(DOS) at the Fermi level, making the $σ$ band upward shift, and increasing hole number in the $σ$ band. So, the superconducting transition temperature T$_{c}$ will be raised correspondingly. Changing the lattice constant al…
Angle-resolved soft x-ray measurements made at the boron K-edge in single crystal MgB2 provide new insights into the B-2p local partial density of both unoccupied and occupied band states. The strong variation of absorption with incident angle of exciting x-rays permits the clear separation of contributions from σstates in the boron plane and πstates normal to the plane. A careful comparison with theory accurately determines the energy of selected critical $k$ points in the conduction band. Resonant inelastic x-ray emission at an incident angle of 15 degrees shows a large enhancement of the em…
The results of first principles calculations of the electronic structure and the electron-phonon interaction in MgB2 are used to study theoretically the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic field penetration depth. The effects of impurity scattering are essential for a proper description of the experimental results. We compare our results with experimental data and we argue that the two-band model describes the data rather well.
We present a comparison of electron-phonon interaction in NbB_2 and MgB_2, calculated using full-potential, density-functional-based methods in P6/mmm crystal structure. Our results, described in terms of (i) electronic structure, (ii) phonon density of states F(ω), (iii) Eliashberg function α^2F(ω), and (iv) the solutions of the isotropic Eliashberg gap equation, clearly show significant differences in the electron-phonon interaction in NbB_2 and MgB_2. We find that the average electron-phonon coupling constant λis equal to 0.59 for MgB_2 and 0.43 for NbB_2, leading to superconducting transit…
We report first-principles calculations of the electronic band structure and lattice dynamics for the new superconductor MgB$_{2}$. The excellent agreement between theory and our inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the phonon density of states gives confidence that the calculations provide a sound description of the physical properties of the system. The numerical results reveal that the in-plane boron phonons (with E$_{2g}$ symmetry) near the zone-center are very anharmonic, and are strongly coupled to the partially occupied planar B $σ$ bands near the Fermi level. This giant anharmo…
Soft X-ray absorption and fluorescence measurements are reported for the K-edge of B in MgB2. The measurements confirm a high density of B pxy(sigma)-states at the Fermi edge and extending to approximately 0.9 eV above the edge. A strong resonance is observed in elastic scattering through a core-exciton derived from out-of-plane pz(pi*)-states. Another strong resonance, observed in both elastic and inelastic spectra, is identified as a product of surface boron oxides.
The electronic structure of electron-doped polycrystalline Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$(B$_{1-y}$C$_{y}$)$_2$ was examined by electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) in a scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) and first-principle electronic structure calculations. We found significant changes in the boron $K$ edge fine structure, suggesting the two bands of the B $K$ edge, the $σ$ and the $π$ band are being simultaneously filled as the electron doping concentration of Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$(B$_{1-y}$C$_{y}$)$_2$ was increased. Our density-functional theory calculations confirm the filling of the …
Recent reports on quantum oscillations in MgB2 provide valuable information on three important aspects of this material: (1) electronic structure near the Fermi level, (2) disparity of the electron-phonon interaction between the two systems of bands (3) renormalization of spin susceptibility. However, extraction of most of this information requires highly accurate band structure calculations of the relevant quantities. In this paper we provide such calculations and use them to analyze the experimental data.
MgB$(p^{n_σ}p^{n_π})_{2}$ is classified as a system with strongly interacting $σ$-electrons and non-correlated $π$-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interaction V between the orbitally degenerated $σ$-electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of s*-wave symmetry. The critical temperature $T_c$ has a non-monotonic dependence on the distance r between the centers of gravity of $σ$- and $π$-bands. MgB$_2$ corresponds to r=0.085 eV and V=0.45 eV in our model with flat bands. The derived superconducting density of electronic states is in good agreement wit…
Electronic heat capacity was calculated for a mesoscopically disordered s-wave superconductor treated as a spatial ensemble of domains with a continuously varying superconducting properties. The domains are assumed to have sizes larger than the coherence length. Each domain is characterized by a certain critical temperature. The averaging over the superconducting gap distribution leads to quadratic temperature dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures, whereas its anomaly at the critical temperature is substantially smeared. The results explain well the heat capacity data for MgB$_{2…
The evidence for the key role of the $σ$ bands in the electronic properties of MgB$_2$ points to the possibility of nonadiabatic effects in the superconductivity of these materials. These are governed by the small value of the Fermi energy due to the vicinity of the hole doping level to the top of the $σ$ bands. We show that the nonadiabatic theory leads to a coherent interpretation of $T_c = 39$ K and the boron isotope coefficient $α_{\rm B} = 0.30$ without invoking very large couplings and it naturally explains the role of the disorder on $T_c$. It also leads to various specific predictions …
Heavy carbon doping of MgB$_2$ is studied by first principles electronic structure studies of two types, an ordered supercell (Mg(B$_{1-x}$C$_{x}$)$_{2}$,x=0.0833) and also the coherent potential approximation method that incorporates effects of B-C disorder. For the ordered model, the twofold degenerate $σ$-bands that are the basis of the high temperature superconductivity are split by 60 meV (i.e.7 meV/%C) and the $σ$ Fermi cylinders contain 0.070 holes/cell, compared to 0.11 for MgB$_2$. A virtual crystal treatment tends to overestimate the rate at which $σ$ holes are filled by substitution…
We have measured the Raman spectra of polycrystalline MgB$_{2}$ from 25 {\cm} to 1200 {\cm}. When the temperature was decreased below the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$, we observed a superconductivity-induced redistribution in the electronic Raman continuum. Two pair-breaking peaks appear in the spectra, suggesting the presence of two superconducting gaps. Furthermore, we have analyzed the measured spectra using a quasi two-dimensional model in which two s-wave superconducting gaps open on two sheets of Fermi surface. For the gap values we have obtained $Δ_1 = 22 cm^{-1}$ (2.7 m…
Small Fermi energy effects are induced in MgB$_2$ by the low hole doping in the $σ$ bands which are characterized by a Fermi energy $E_{\rm F}^σ\sim 0.5$ eV. We show that, due to the particularly strong deformation potential relative to the $E_{2g}$ phonon mode, lattice fluctuations are reflected in strong fluctuations in the electronic band structure. Quantum fluctuations associated to the zero-point lattice motion are responsible for an uncertainty of the Fermi energy of the order of the Fermi energy itself, leading to the breakdown of the adiabatic principle underlying the Born-Oppenheimer …
A reasonable cause of absence of hump structure in thermal conductivity of MgB2 below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) lies in the appearance of multigap structure. The gaps of lower magnitude can be suppressed by defects so that this system becomes effectively a single gap superconductor. When such a situation is created, it is hoped that thermal conductivity will show hump below Tc. Proceeding along these lines, a sample of MgB2 with a relatively higher residual resistivity (33.3 mili-Ohm-cm)has been found to show a hump structure below Tc. The actual electronic thermal conduc…
Series of $I(V)$ characteristic and bias-dependent differential resistance $dV/dI(V)$ for point-contacts on the single crystals of two-band superconductor MgB$_2$ were measured in magnetic field up to 9 T. We have obtained magnetic field dependences of the excess current on the $I(V)$ curves and analyzed them using Koshelev and Golubov (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 90}, 177002 (2003)) theoretical results for the mixed state of a dirty two-band superconductor. Introducing a simple model for the excess current in the point contact in the mixed state our data can be qualitatively described utilizing the…
We report a detailed first-principles study of the structural, electronic and vibrational properties of the superconducting C$_{32}$ phase of the ternary alloy CaAl$_{2-x}$Si$_x$, both in the experimental range $0.6 \leq x \leq 1.2$, for which the alloy has been synthesised, and in the theoretical limits of high aluminium and high silicon concentration. Our results indicate that, in the experimental range, the dependence of the electronic bands on composition is well described by a rigid-band model, which breaks down outside this range. Such a breakdown, in the (theoretical) limit of high alum…
Based on electronic structure calculations, we have found that noble metal diborides, AgB2 and AuB2, are potential candidates for conventional BCS-type high temperature superconductors. B 2p density of states dominates at the Fermi level in comparison with Ag 4d and Au 5d states. Furthermore, the electron-phonon coupling constant λis much larger in AgB2 and AuB2 than in MgB2. Estimated transition temperatures for AgB2 and AuB2 are T_c = 59 K and 72 K, respectively. These are about 2 ~ 3 times higher than the estimated T_c = 27 K in MgB2 and almost comparable to those in cuprate superconductors…
X-ray emission (XES) and absorption (XAS) spectra near the B-$K$ edge were measured on single-crystalline AlB$_2$ compound which is an isostructural diboride of superconducting MgB$_2$. The partial density of states (PDOS) of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ orbitals were derived from the polarization dependence of XES and XAS spectra. There are considerable amounts of PDOS near the Fermi energy in AlB$_2$ similarly to that in MgB$_2$, but there are almost no PDOS in $pσ$ orbitals of AlB$_2$ near the Fermi energy, i.e., a pseudo-gap in $pσ$ state and a broad metallic state in $pπ$ state are observed. The pres…
We present a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a two-band superconductor with emphasis on MgB$_{2}$. Experiments are proposed which lead to identification of the possible scenarios: whether both $σ$- and $π$-bands superconduct or $σ$% -alone. According to the second scenario a microscopic theory of superconducting MgB$_{2}$ is proposed based on the strongly interacting $% σ$-electrons and non-correlated $π$-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interactions of $σ$% -electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of $s$% *-wave symmetry. The critical temperature $T_{c…
Results of FLMTO-GGA (full-potential linear muffin-tin orbital -- generalized gradient approximation) calculations of the band structure and boron electric field gradients (EFG) for the new medium-T$_c$ superconductor (MTSC), MgB$_2$, and related diborides MB$_2$, M=Be, Al, Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mo and Ta are reported. The boron EFG variations are found to be related to specific features of their band structure and particularly to the M-B hybridization. The strong charge anisotropy at the B site in MgB$_2$ is completely defined by the valence electrons - a property which sets MgB$_2$ apart from other…
We present electronic structure calculations together with resistivity, susceptibility, and specific heat measurements for TaB$_2$ to search for the recently contradictorily reported superconductivity and to study related normal state properties. We ascribe the absence of superconductivity down to 1.5 K for our TaB$_2$ samples to the generally weak electron phonon coupling derived from comparison of the calculated and measured specific heat constants. For the E$_{2g}$ and the B$_{1g}$ $Γ$ point phonons we derive from the calculated deformation potentials very small electron phonon couplings fo…
X-ray diffraction multipole refinements of single-crystalline Mg$_x$Al$_{1-x}$B$_2$ and polarization-dependent near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure at the B 1$s$ edge reveal a strongly anisotropic electronic structure. Comparing the data for superconducting compounds ($x= 0.8$, 1.0) with those for the non-superconductor ($x=0$) gives direct evidence for a rearrangement of the hybridizations of the boron $p_z$ bonds and underline the importance of holes in the $σ$-bonded covalent $sp^2$ states for the superconducting properties of the diborides. The data indicate that Mg is approximately d…
Our results indicate essentially three-dimensional properties for these compounds; however, strongly two-…
Using electronic structure calculation we study the superconducting properties of the theoretically-devised superconductor MS1-LiB (LiB). We calculate the electron-phonon coupling ($λ=0.62$) and the phonon frequency logarithmic average ($<ω>_{log}=54.6$ meV) and show that the LiB critical temperature is in the range of 10-15 K, despite the frozen-phonon deformation potential being of the same order of MgB$_2$. As a consequence, LiB captures some of the essential physics of MgB$_2$ but (i) the electron-phonon coupling due to $σ$ states is smaller and (ii) the precious contribution of the $π$ ca…
