We discuss cyclic star-autonomous categories; that is, unbraided star- autonomous categories in which the left and right duals of every object p are linked by coherent natural isomorphism. We settle coherence questions which have arisen concerning such cyclicity isomorphisms, and we show that such cyclic structures are the natural setting in which to consider enriched profunctors. Specifically, if V is a cyclic star-autonomous category, then the collection of V-enriched profunctors carries a canonical cyclic structure. In the case of braided star-autonomous categories, we discuss the correspondences between cyclic structures and balances or tortile structures. Finally, we show that every cyclic star-autonomous category is equivalent to one in which the cyclicity isomorphisms are identities.
The topic of this thesis is the application of distributive laws between comonads to the theory of cyclic homology. Explicitly, our main aims are: 1) To study how the cyclic homology of associative algebras and of Hopf algebras in the original sense of Connes and Moscovici arises from a distributive law, and to clarify the role of different notions of bimonad in this generalisation. 2) To extend the procedure of twisting the cyclic homology of a unital associative algebra to any duplicial object defined by a distributive law. 3) To study the universality of Bohm and Stefan's approach to constr…
We replace a ring with a small $\mathbb C$-linear category $\mathcal{C}$, seen as a ring with several objects in the sense of Mitchell. We introduce Fredholm modules over this category and construct a Chern character taking values in the cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal C$. We show that this categorified Chern character is homotopy invariant and is well-behaved with respect to the periodicity operator in cyclic cohomology. For this, we also obtain a description of cocycles and coboundaries in the cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal C$ (and more generally, in the Hopf-cyclic cohomology of a Hopf modul…
We define the Hochschild and cyclic (co)homology groups for superadditive categories and show that these (co)homology groups are graded Morita invariants. We also show that the Hochschild and cyclic homology are compatible with the tensor product of superadditive categories.
Frobenius monoidal functors preserve duals. We show that conversely, (co)monoidal functors between autonomous categories which preserve duals are Frobenius monoidal. We apply this result to linearly distributive functors between autonomous categories.
The self-duality of the paracyclic category is extended to a certain class of homotopy categories of (2,1)-categories. These generalise the orbit category of a group and are associated to certain self-dual preorders equipped with a presheaf of groups and a cosieve. Slice 2-categories of equidimensional submanifolds of a compact manifold without boundary form a particular case, and for $S^1$, one recovers cyclic duality. This provides in particular a visualisation of the results of Böhm and Ştefan on the topic.
*-Autonomous categories were initially defined by M. Barr to describe a type of duality carried by many monoidal closed categories. Later they were generalised by the current author to include *-autonomous promonoidal categories. Together, these structures under "convolution" product give a clear indication of the usefulness of *-autonomy in quantum mathematics and related areas.
Given an additive equational category with a closed symmetric monoidal structure and a potential dualizing object, we find sufficient conditions that the category of topological objects over that category has a good notion of full subcategories of strong and weakly topologized objects and show that each is equivalent to the chu category of the original category with respect to the dualizing object.
This paper presents a coherence theorem for star-autonomous categories exactly analogous to Kelly's and Mac Lane's coherence theorem for symmetric monoidal closed categories. The proof of this theorem is based on a categorial cut-elimination result, which is presented in some detail.
We define a traced pseudomonoid as a pseudomonoid in a monoidal bicategory equipped with extra structure, giving a new characterisation of Cauchy complete traced monoidal categories as algebraic structures in Prof, the monoidal bicategory of profunctors. This enables reasoning about the trace using the graphical calculus for monoidal bicategories, which we illustrate in detail. We apply our techniques to study traced ∗-autonomous categories, proving a new equivalence result between the left ⊗-trace and the right ⅋-trace, and describing a new condition under which traced ͨ…
Let $M$ be an exact symplectic manifold with contact type boundary such that $c_1(M)=0$. In this paper we show that the cyclic cohomology of the Fukaya category of $M$ has the structure of an involutive Lie bialgebra. Inspired by a work of Cieliebak-Latschev we show that there is a Lie bialgebra homomorphism from the linearized contact homology of $M$ to the cyclic cohomology of the Fukaya category. Our study is also motivated by string topology and 2-dimensional topological conformal field theory.
In this paper we show that to a unital associative algebra object (resp. co-unital co-associative co-algebra object) of any abelian monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ endowed with a symmetric $2$-trace, one can attach a cyclic (resp. cocyclic) module, and therefore speak of the cyclic (co)homology of the (co)algebra "with coefficients in $F$". We observe that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a $\mathcal{C}$-bimodule category equipped with a stable central pair then $\mathcal{C}$ acquires a symmetric 2-trace. The dual notions of symmetric $2$-contratraces and stable central contrapairs are derived as well. As …
We study the biclosedness of the monoidal categories of modules and comodules over a (left or right) Hopf algebroid, along with the bimodule category centres of the respective opposite categories and a corresponding categorical equivalence to anti Yetter-Drinfel'd contramodules and anti Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, respectively. This is directly connected to the existence of a trace functor on the monoidal categories of modules and comodules in question, which in turn allows to recover (or define) cyclic operators enabling cyclic cohomology.
This paper gives a simple presentation of the free star-autonomous category over a category, based on Eilenberg-Kelly-MacLane graphs and Trimble rewiring, yielding a full coherence theorem: the commutativity of diagrams of canonical maps is decidable.
We introduce a new way to encode semicyclic structures using a stack of broken cycles. (We also prove an analogue for paracyclic structures.) This was motivated not only by higher algebra but also by Fukaya-categorical considerations. We also openly speculate about some Fukaya-categorical implications. For example, this stack sees moduli of stopped Liouville disks, and hence yields another platform for gluing together Fukaya categories. We also see that Lagrangian cobordisms with multiple ends may not only serve to detect $K_0$ groups of Fukaya categories, but higher $K$-theory groups as well.…
We study the question when a *-autonomous (Mix-)category has a representation as a $*$-autonomous category of a compact one. We prove that necessary and sufficient condition is that weak distributivity maps are monic (or, equivalently epic). For a Mix-category, this condition is, in turn, equivalent to the requirement that Mix-maps be monic (or epic). We call categories satisfying this property torsion-free. An important side result is that torsion-free categories have canonical partial traces.
We introduce twisted arrow categories of operads and of algebras over operads. Up to equivalence of categories, the simplex category $Δ$, Segal's category $Γ$, Connes cyclic category $Λ$, Moerdijk-Weiss dendroidal category $Ω$, and categories similar to graphical categories of Hackney-Robertson-Yau are twisted arrow categories of symmetric or cyclic operads. Twisted arrow categories of operads admit Segal presheaves and 2-Segal presheaves, or decomposition spaces. Twisted arrow category of an operad $P$ is the $(\infty, 1)$-localization of the corresponding category $Ω/P$ by the boundary prese…
We develop an alternative approach to star-autonomous comonads via linearly distributive categories. It is shown that in the autonomous case the notions of star-autonomous comonad and Hopf comonad coincide.
We give a historical perspective on the role of the cyclic category in the development of cyclic theory. This involves a continuous interplay between the extension in characteristic one and in S-algebras, of the traditional development of cyclic theory, and the geometry of the toposes associated with several small categories involved. We clarify the link between various existing presentations of the cyclic and the epicyclic categories and we exemplify the role of the absolute coefficients by presenting the ring of the integers as polynomials in powers of 3, with coefficients in the spherical g…
Let $H$ be a Hopf algebra and let $\mathcal D_H$ be a Hopf-module category. We describe the cocycles and coboundaries for the Hopf cyclic cohomology of $\mathcal D_H$, which correspond respectively to categorified cycles and vanishing cycles over $\mathcal D_H$. An important role in our work is played by semicategories, which are categories that may not contain identity maps. In particular, a cycle over $\mathcal D_H$ consists of a differential graded $H$-module semicategory equipped with a trace on endomorphism groups satisfying some conditions. Using a pairing on cycles, we obtain a pairing …
The goal of this paper is to classify fusion categories $\otimes$-generated by a $K$-normal object (defined in this paper) of Frobenius-Perron dimension less than 2. This classification has recently become accessible due to a result of Morrison and Snyder, showing that any such category must be a cyclic extension of a category of adjoint $ADE$ type. Our main tools in this classification are the results of Etingof, Ostrik, and Nikshych, classifying cyclic extensions of a given category in terms of data computed from the Brauer-Picard group, and Drinfeld centre of that category, and the results …
It is known that the quantale of sup-preserving maps from a complete lattice to itself is a Frobenius quantale if and only if the lattice is completely distributive. Since completely distributive lattices are the nuclear objects in the autonomous category of complete lattices and sup-preserving maps, we study the above statement in a categorical setting. We introduce the notion of Frobenius structure in an arbitrary autonomous category, generalizing that of Frobenius quantale. We prove that the monoid of endomorphisms of a nuclear object has a Frobenius structure. If the environment category i…
We present the notion of "cyclic double multicategory", as a structure in which to organise multivariable adjunctions and mates. The classic example of a 2-variable adjunction is the hom/tensor/cotensor trio of functors; we generalise this situation to n+1 functors of n variables. Furthermore, we generalise the mates correspondence, which enables us to pass between natural transformations involving left adjoints to those involving right adjoints. While the standard mates correspondence is described using an isomorphism of double categories, the multivariable version requires the framework of "…
Toy models have been used to separate important features of quantum computation from the rich background of the standard Hilbert space model. Category theory, on the other hand, is a general tool to separate components of mathematical structures, and analyze one layer at a time. It seems natural to combine the two approaches, and several authors have already pursued this idea. We explore *categorical comprehension construction* as a tool for adding features to toy models. We use it to comprehend quantum propositions and probabilities within the basic model of finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces.…
We exhibit the simplex category $Δ$ and Segal's category $Γ$ as $\infty$-categorical localizations of the dendroidal categories $Ω_π$ and $Ω$ introduced by Moerdijk and Weiss. As an application we obtain an equivalence of $\infty$-categories between invertible $\infty$-operads and the $2$-Segal spaces of Dyckerhoff and Kapranov. Finally, we describe a cyclic version of the dendroidal category and explain how it $\infty$-localizes to Connes's cyclic category $Λ$.
We study the question when a $*$-autonomous Mix-category has a representation as a $*$-autonomous Mix-subcategory of a compact one. We define certain partial trace-like operation on morphisms of a Mix-category, which we call a mixed trace, and show that any structure preserving embedding of a Mix-category into a compact one induces a mixed trace on the former. We also show that, conversely, if a Mix-category ${\bf K}$ has a mixed trace, then we can construct a compact category and structure preserving embedding of ${\bf K}$ into it, which induces the same mixed trace. Finally, we find a specif…
We introduce a variant on the graphical calculus of Cockett and Seely for monoidal functors and illustrate it with a discussion of Tannaka reconstruction, some of which is known and some of which is new. The new portion is: given a separable Frobenius functor F: A --> B from a monoidal category A to a suitably complete or cocomplete braided autonomous category B, the usual formula for Tannaka reconstruction gives a weak bialgebra in B; if, moreover, A is autonomous, this weak bialgebra is in fact a weak Hopf algebra.
We introduce and study Hopf monads on autonomous categories (i.e., monoidal categories with duals). Hopf monads generalize Hopf algebras to a non-braided (and non-linear) setting. Indeed, any monoidal adjunction between autonomous categories gives rise to a Hopf monad. We extend many fundamental results of the theory of Hopf algebras (such as the decomposition of Hopf modules, the existence of integrals, Maschke's criterium of semisimplicity, etc...) to Hopf monads. We also introduce and study quasitriangular and ribbon Hopf monads (again defined in a non-braided setting).
We investigate monoidal categories of formal contexts, in which states correspond to formal concepts. In particular we examine the category of bonds or Chu correspondences between contexts, which is known to be equivalent to the *-autonomous category of complete sup-lattices. We show that a second monoidal structure exists on both categories, corresponding to the direct product of formal contexts defined by Ganter and Wille, and discuss the use of these categories as compositional models of meaning.
The purpose of this work is to provide details about the construction of the Chern character for categorical sheaves mentioned in our previous work "Chern character, loop spaces and derived algebraic geometry". For this, we introduce and study the notion of rigid symmetric monoidal \infty-category. We show how trace maps can be constructed in this higher categorical setting, and using a recent work of Hopkins-Lurie we prove the existence of a "cyclic trace", which is the main ingredient in the construction of the Chern character. Our Chern character is then constructed for any pair (T,A), cons…
A useful general concept of bialgebroid seems to be resolving itself in recent publications; we give a treatment in terms of modules and enriched categories. We define the term "quantum category". The definition of antipode for a bialgebroid is less resolved in the literature. Our suggestion is that the kind of dualization occurring in Barr's star-autonomous categories is more suitable than autonomy (= compactness = rigidity). This leads to our definition of quantum groupoid intended as a "Hopf algebra with several objects".
We show that the category of finite-length generalized modules for the singlet vertex algebra $\mathcal{M}(p)$, $p\in\mathbb{Z}_{>1}$, is equal to the category $\mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{M}(p)}$ of $C_1$-cofinite $\mathcal{M}(p)$-modules, and that this category admits the vertex algebraic braided tensor category structure of Huang-Lepowsky-Zhang. Since $\mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{M}(p)}$ includes the uncountably many typical $\mathcal{M}(p)$-modules, which are simple $\mathcal{M}(p)$-module structures on Heisenberg Fock modules, our results substantially extend our previous work on tensor categories of…
We show existence of a natural rational structure on periodic cyclic homology, conjectured by L. Katzarkov, M. Kontsevich, T. Pantev, for several classes of dg-categories, including proper connective $\mathbb{C}$-dg-algebras and dg-categories of local systems. The main ingredient is derived nilpotent invariance of A. Blanc's semi-topological K-theory, which we establish along the way.
We study the duplicial objects of Dwyer and Kan, which generalize the cyclic objects of Connes. We describe duplicial objects in terms of the decalage comonads, and we give a conceptual account of the construction of duplicial objects due to Bohm and Stefan. This is done in terms of a 2-categorical generalization of Hochschild homology. We also study duplicial structure on nerves of categories, bicategories, and monoidal categories.
