For a Lie algebra $L$ and a subalgebra $M$ of $L$ we say that a subalgebra $U$ of $L$ is a {\em supplement} to $M$ in $L$ if $L = M + U$. We investigate those Lie algebras all of whose maximal subalgebras have abelian supplements, those that have nilpotent supplements, those that have nil supplements, and those that have supplements with the property that their derived algebra is inside the maximal subalgebra being supplemented. For the algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero in the last three of these classes we find complete descriptions; for those in the first class partial results are obtained.
A subalgebra $B$ of a Lie algebra $L$ is {\em c-supplemented} in $L$ if there is a subalgebra $C$ of $L$ with $L = B + C$ and $B \cap C \leq B_L$, where $B_L$ is the core of $B$ in $L$. This is analogous to the corresponding concept of a c-supplemented subgroup in a finite group. We say that $L$ is {\em c-supplemented} if every subalgebra of $L$ is c-supplemented in $L$. We give here a complete characterisation of c-supplemented Lie algebras over a general field.
In this paper we initiate the study of the maximal subalgebras of exceptional simple classical Lie algebras \g over algebraically closed fields k of positive characteristic p, such that the prime characteristic is good for \g. In this paper we deal with what is surely the most unnatural case; that is, where the maximal subalgebra in question is a simple subalgebra of non-classical type. We show that only the first Witt algebra can occur as a subalgebra of \g and give explicit details on when it may be maximal in \g.
In this paper, the main objective is to compare the abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension for finite-dimensional supersolvable Lie algebras. We characterise the maximal abelian subalgebras of solvable Lie algebras and study solvable Lie algebras containing an abelian subalgebra of codimension 2. Finally, we prove that nilpotent Lie algebras with an abelian subalgebra of codimension 3 contain an abelian ideal with the same dimension, provided that the characteristic of the underlying field is not two. Throughout the paper, we also give several examples to clarify some results.
Let M be a maximal subalgebra of the Lie algebra L. A subalgebra C of L is said to be a completion for M if C is not contained in M but every proper subalgebra of C that is an ideal of L is contained in M. The set I(M) of all completions of M is called the index complex of M in L. We use this concept to investigate the influence of the maximal subalgebras on the structure of a Lie algebra, in particular finding new characterisations of solvable and supersolvable Lie algebras.
Relationships between certain properties of maximal subalgebras of a Lie algebra $L$ and the structure of $L$ itself have been studied by a number of authors. Amongst the maximal subalgebras, however, some exert a greater influence on particular results than others. Here we study properties of those maximal subalgebras that contain Engel subalgebras, and of those that also have codimension greater than one in $L$.
A chain $S_0 < S_1 < \ldots < S_n = L$ is a {\em maximal chain} if each $S_i$ is a maximal subalgebra of $S_{i+1}$. The subalgebra $S_0$ in such a series is called an {\em $n$-maximal} subalgebra. There are many interesting results concerning the question of what certain intrinsic properties of the maximal subalgebras of a Lie algebra $L$ imply about the structure of $L$ itself. Here we consider whether similar results can be obtained by imposing conditions on the $n$-maximal subalgebras of $L$, where $n>1$.
In this paper we study the lengths of certain chains of subalgebras of a Lie algebra L: namely, a chief series, a maximal chain of minimal length, a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is modular in L, and a chain of maximal length in which each subalgebra is a quasi-ideal of L. In particular we show that, over a field of characteristic zero, a Lie algebra L with radical R has a maximal chain of subalgebras and a chain of subalgebras all of which are modular in L of the same length if and only if L = R, or $\sqrt{F} \not \subseteq F$ and L/R is a direct sum of isomorphic three-dim…
Let $G$ be an exceptional simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $k$ and suppose that the characteristic $p$ of $k$ is a good prime for $G$. In this paper we classify the maximal Lie subalgebras $\mathfrak{m}$ of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}={\rm Lie}(G)$. Specifically, we show that one of the following holds: $\mathfrak{m}={\rm Lie}(M)$ for some maximal connected subgroup $M$ of $G$, or $\mathfrak{m}$ is a maximal Witt subalgebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, or $\mathfrak{m}$ is a maximal $\it{\mbox{exotic semidirect product}}$. The conjugacy classes of maximal connected subgroups o…
In this thesis we consider the maximal subalgebras of the exceptional Lie algebras in algebraically closed fields of positive characteristic. This begins with a quick recap of the article by Herpel and Stewart which considered the Cartan type maximal subalgebras in the exceptional Lie algebras for good characteristic, and then the article by Premet considering non-semisimple maximal subalgebras in good characteristic. For $p=5$ we give an example of what appears to be a new maximal subalgebra in the exceptional Lie algebra of type $E_8$. We show that this maximal subalgebra is isomorphic to th…
The purpose of this paper is to consider when two maximal subalgebras of a finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebra $L$ are conjugate, and to investigate their intersection.
This paper is a continued investigation of the structure of Lie algebras in relation to their chief factors, using concepts that are analogous to corresponding ones in group theory. The first section investigates the structure of Lie algebras with a core-free maximal subalgebra. The results obtained are then used in section two to consider the relationship of two chief factors of L being L-connected, a weaker equivalence relation on the set of chief factors than that of being isomorphic as L-modules. A strengthened form of the Jordan-Holder Theorem in which Frattini chief factors correspond i…
The purpose of this paper is to continue the study of chief factors of a Lie algebra and to prove a further strengthening of the Jordan-Hölder Theorem for chief series.
The purpose of this paper is to determine all maximal graded subalgebras of the four infinite series of finite-dimensional graded Lie superalgebras of odd Cartan type over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>3$. All maximal graded subalgebras consist of three types (\MyRoman{1}), (\MyRoman{2}) and (\MyRoman{3}). Maximal graded subalgebras of type (\MyRoman{3}) fall into reducible maximal graded subalgebras and irreducible maximal graded subalgebras. In this paper we classify maximal graded subalgebras of types (\MyRoman{1}), (\MyRoman{2}) and reducible maximal g raded subalgebra…
We show that the Poisson centre of truncated maximal parabolic subalgebras of a simple Lie algebra of type B, D and E_6 is a polynomial algebra. In roughly half of the cases the polynomiality of the Poisson centre was already known by a completely different method. For the rest of the cases, our approach is to construct an algebraic slice in the sense of Kostant given by an adapted pair and the computation of an improved upper bound for the Poisson centre.
The maximal subalgebras of the finite dimensional simple special Jordan superalgebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 are studied. This is a continuation of a previous paper by the same authors about maximal subalgebras of simple associative superalgebras, which is instrumental here.
The maximal graded subalgebras for four families of Lie superalgebras of Cartan type over a field of prime characteristic are studied. All maximal reducible graded subalgebras are described completely and their isomorphism classes, dimension formulas are found. The classification of maximal irreducible graded subalgebras is reduced to the classification of the maximal irreducible subalgebras for the classical Lie superalgebras $\frak{gl}(m,n)$, $\frak{sl}(m,n)$ and $\frak{osp}(m,n)$.
Nilpotent Leibniz algebras with isomorphic maximal subalgebras are considered. The algebras are classified for coclass zero, one, and two. The results are field dependent.
We call a subalgebra $U$ of a Lie algebra $L$ a $CAP$-subalgebra of $L$ if for any chief factor $H/K$ of $L$, we have $H \cap U = K \cap U$ or $H+U = K+U$. In this paper we investigate some properties of such subalgebras and obtain some characterizations for a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ to be solvable under the assumption that some of its maximal subalgebras or $2$-maximal subalgebras be $CAP$-subalgebras.
We investigate the structure of maximal commutative subalgebras of the finite dimensional Grassmann algebra over a field of characteristic different from two.
Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and suppose that $p$ is a very good prime for $G$. We prove that any maximal Lie subalgebra $M$ of $\mathfrak{g} = {\rm Lie}(G)$ with ${\rm rad}(M) \ne 0$ has the form $M = {\rm Lie}(P)$ for some maximal parabolic subgroup $P$ of $G$. We show that the assumption on $p$ is necessary by providing a counterexample for groups type ${\rm E}_8$ over fields of characteristic $5$. Our arguments rely on the main results and methods of the classification theory of finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over fi…
In this paper, we compare the abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension for finite-dimensional Zinbiel algebras. We study Zinbiel algebras containing maximal abelian subalgebras of codimension $1$ and supersolvable Zinbiel algebras in which such subalgebras have codimension $2$, and we also analyze the case of filiform Zinbiel algebras. We give examples to clarify some results, including listing the values for $α$ and $β$ for the low dimensional Zinbiel algebras over the complex field that have been classified.
Important subalgebras of a Lie algebra of an algebraic group are its toral subalgebras, or equivalently (over fields of characteristic 0) its Cartan subalgebras. Of great importance among these are ones that are split: their action on the Lie algebra splits completely over the field of definition. While algorithms to compute split maximal toral subalgebras exist and have been implemented [Ryb07, CM09], these algorithms fail when the Lie algebra is defined over a field of characteristic 2 or 3. We present heuristic algorithms that, given a reductive Lie algebra L over a finite field of characte…
In this paper, we compare the abelian subalgebras and ideals of maximal dimension for finite-dimensional Leibniz algebras. We study Leibniz algebras containing abelian subalgebras of codimension 1, solvable and supersolvable Leibniz algebras for codimensions 1 and 2, nilpotent Leibniz algebras in case of codimension 2 and we also analyze the case of k-abelian p-filiform Leibniz algebras. Throughout the paper, we also give examples to clarify some results and the need for restrictions on the underlying field.
In this work we study Leibniz algebras whose second-maximal subalgebras are ideals. We provide a classification based on solvability, nilpotency, and the size of the derived algebra. We give specific descriptions of those Leibniz algebras whose derived algebra has codimension zero or one. This includes several algebras which are only possible over certain fields.
The elaboration of new quantization methods has recently developed the interest in the study of subalgebras of the Lie algebra of polynomial vector fields over a Euclidean space. In this framework, these subalgebras define maximal equivariance conditions that one can impose on a linear bijection between observables that are polynomial in the momenta and differential operators. Here, we determine which finite dimensional graded Lie subalgebras are maximal. In order to characterize these, we make use of results of Guillemin, Singer and Sternberg and Kobayashi and Nagano.
In this paper we prove that the subalgebras of cocommutative elements in the quantized coordinate rings of $M_{n}$, $GL_{n}$ and $SL_{n}$ are the centralizers of the trace $x_{1,1}+\dots+x_{n,n}$ in each algebra, for $q\in\mathbb{C}^{\times}$ being not a root of unity. In particular, it is not only a commutative subalgebra as it was known before, but it is a maximal one.
Maximal abelian subalgebras of one of the classical real inhomogeneous Lie algebras are constructed, namely those of the pseudoeuclidean Lie algebra e(p,q). Use is made of the semidirect sum structure of e(p,q) with the translations T(p+q) as an abelian ideal. We first construct splitting MASAs that are themselves direct sums of abelian subalgebras of o(p,q) and of subalgebras of T(p+q). The splitting subalgebras are used to construct the complementary nonsplitting ones. We present general decomposition theorems and construct indecomposable MASAs for all algebras e(p,q), p \geq q \geq 0. The c…
We study maximal subalgebras of an arbitrary finite dimensional algebra over a field, and obtain full classification/description results of such algebras. This is done by first obtaining a complete classification in the semisimple case, and then lifting to non-semisimple algebras. The results are sharpest in the case of algebraically closed fields, and take special forms for algebras presented by quivers with relations. We also relate representation theoretic properties of the algebra and its maximal and other subalgebras, and provide a series of embeddings between quivers, incidence algebras …
Let $M_n(K)$ denote the algebra of $n \times n$ matrices over a field $K$ of characteristic zero. A nonunital subalgebra $N \subset M_n(K)$ will be called a nonunital intersection if $N$ is the intersection of two unital subalgebras of $M_n(K)$. Appealing to recent work of Agore, we show that for $n \ge 3$, the dimension (over $K$) of a nonunital intersection is at most $(n-1)(n-2)$, and we completely classify the nonunital intersections of maximum dimension $(n-1)(n-2)$. We also classify the unital subalgebras of maximum dimension properly contained in a parabolic subalgebra of maximum dimens…
For every field $F$ which has a quadratic extension $E$ we show there are non-metabelian infinite-dimensional thin graded Lie algebras all of whose homogeneous components, except the second one, have dimension $2$. We construct such Lie algebras as $F$-subalgebras of Lie algebras $M$ of maximal class over $E$. We characterise the thin Lie $F$-subalgebras of $M$ generated in degree $1$. Moreover we show that every thin Lie algebra $L$ whose ring of graded endomorphisms of degree zero of $L^3$ is a quadratic extension of $F$ can be obtained in this Lie algebra of maximal class over $E$ which are…
We give tables of noncompact real forms of maximal reductive subalgebras of complex simple Lie algebras of rank up to 8. These were obtained by computational methods that we briefly describe. We also discuss applications in theoretical physics of these embeddings.
The maximal dimension of a commutative subalgebra of the Grassmann algebra is determined. It is shown that for any commutative subalgebra there exists a commutative subalgebra which is spanned by monomials and has the same dimension. It follows that the maximal dimension of a commutative subalgebra can be expressed in terms of the maximal size of an intersecting system of subsets of odd size in a finite set.
In one of his last papers, Boris Weisfeiler proved that if modular semisimple Lie algebra possesses a solvable maximal subalgebra which defines in it a long filtration, then associated graded algebra is isomorphic to one constructed from the Zassenhaus algebra tensored with the divided powers algebra. We completely determine such class of algebras, calculating in process low-dimensional cohomology groups of Zassenhaus algebra tensored with any associative commutative algebra.
Let $k$ be an algebraically-closed field, and let $B = kQ/I$ be a basic, finite-dimensional associative $k$-algebra with $n := \dim_kB < \infty$. Previous work shows that the collection of maximal subalgebras of $B$ carries the structure of a projective variety, denoted by $\operatorname{msa} (Q)$, which only depends on the underlying quiver $Q$ of $B$. The automorphism group $\operatorname{Aut}_k(B)$ acts regularly on $\operatorname{msa} (Q)$. Since $\operatorname{msa} (Q)$ does not depend on the admissible ideal $I$, it is not necessarily easy to tell when two points of $\operatorname{msa} (…
Using Wederburn's main theorem and a result of Gerstenhaber we prove that, over a field of characteristic zero, the maximal dimension of a proper unital subalgebra in the $n \times n$ matrix algebra is $n^2 - n + 1$ and furthermore this upper bound is attained for the so-called parabolic subalgebras. We also investigate the corresponding notion of parabolic coideals for matrix coalgebras and prove that the minimal dimension of a non-zero coideal of the matrix coalgebra ${\mathcal M}^n (k)$ is $n-1$.
It has been conjectured by Gene Freudenburg that for a polynomial ring, the triangular Lie algebra is the maximal Lie algebra which lies in the set of locally nilpotent derivations of the ring. Also it was conjectured that each other maximal Lie algebra which lies in the set of locally nilpotent derivations of the polynomial ring is conjugated to the triangular Lie algebra. In the present work we prove the first part of this conjecture and provide the counterexample to the second part. Also we show that the second part of the conjecture holds for the maximal Lie algebras among locally nilpoten…

Let $n=4k+1$ and $k\geq 4$. We show that there exists maximal commutative subalgebras (with respect to inclusion) of dimension less that $3\cdot 2^{n-2}$.
In this paper we show that each non-zero ideal of a twisted generalized Weyl algebra (TGWA) $A$ intersects the centralizer of the distinguished subalgebra $R$ in $A$ non-trivially. We also provide a necessary and sufficient condition for the centralizer of $R$ in $A$ to be commutative, and give examples of TGWAs associated to symmetric Cartan matrices satisfying this condition. By imposing a certain finiteness condition on $R$ (weaker than Noetherianity) we are able to make an Ore localization which turns out to be useful when investigating simplicity of the TGWA. Under this mild assumption we…
The main purpose of this paper is to study the finite-dimensional solvable Lie algebras described in its title, which we call {\em minimal non-${\mathcal N}$}. To facilitate this we investigate solvable Lie algebras of nilpotent length $k$, and of nilpotent length $\leq k$, and {\em extreme} Lie algebras, which have the property that their nilpotent length is equal to the number of conjugacy classes of maximal subalgebras. We characterise the minimal non-${\mathcal N}$ Lie algebras in which every nilpotent subalgebra is abelian, and those of solvability index $\leq 3$.
We compare the maximal dimension of abelian subalgebras and the maximal dimension of abelian ideals for finite-dimensional Lie algebras. We show that these dimensions coincide for solvable Lie algebras over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We compute this invariant for all complex nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension n less than 8. Furthermore we study the case where there exists an abelian subalgebra of codimension 2. Here we explicitly construct an abelian ideal of codimension 2 in case of nilpotent Lie algebras.
A finite-dimensional Lie algebra $L$ over a field $F$ is called an $A$-algebra if all of its nilpotent subalgebras are abelian. This is analogous to the concept of an $A$-group: a finite group with the property that all of its Sylow subgroups are abelian. These groups were first studied in the 1940s by Philip Hall, and are still studied today. Rather less is known about $A$-algebras, though they have been studied and used by a number of authors. The purpose of this paper is to obtain more detailed results on the structure of solvable Lie $A$-algebras. It is shown that they split over each term…
A Majorana algebra is a commutative nonassociative real algebra generated by a finite set of idempotents, called Majorana axes, that satisfy some of the properties of the $2A$-axes of the Monster Griess algebra. The term was introduced by A. A. Ivanov in 2009 inspired by the work of S. Sakuma and M. Miyamoto. In the present paper, we revisit Mayer and Neutsch's theorem on associative subalgebras of the Griess algebra in the context of Majorana theory. We apply this result to determine all the maximal associative subalgebras of some low-dimensional Majorana algebras; namely, the Majorana algebr…
Engel subalgebras of finite-dimensional Leibniz algebras are shown to have similar properties to those of Lie algebras. Using these, it is shown that a left Leibniz algebra, all of whose maximal subalgebras are right ideals, is nilpotent. A primitive Leibniz algebra is shown to split over its minimal ideal and that all the complements to its minimal ideal are conjugate. A subalgebra is shown to be a Cartan subalgebra if and only if it is minimal Engel, provided that the field has sufficiently many elements. Cartan subalgebras are shown to have a property analogous to intravariance.
Engel subalgebras of finite-dimensional n-Lie algebras are shown to have similar properties to those of Lie algebras. Using these, it is shown that an n-Lie algebra, all of whose maximal subalgebras are ideals, is nilpotent. A primitive 2-soluble n-Lie algebra is shown to split over its minimal ideal and that all the complements to its minimal ideal are conjugate. A subalgebra is shown to be a Cartan subalgebra if and only if it is minimal Engel, provided that the field has sufficiently many elements. Cartan subalgebras are shown to have a property analogous to intravariance.
Let $Λ$ be a row-finite higher-rank graph with no sources. We identify a maximal commutative subalgebra $\mathcal{M}$ inside the Kumjian-Pask algebra ${\rm KP}_R(Λ)$. We also prove a generalized Cuntz-Krieger uniqueness theorem for Kumjian-Pask algebras which says that a representation of ${\rm KP}_R(Λ)$ is injective if and only if it is injective on $\mathcal{M}$.
