The initial motivation for this paper is to discuss a more concrete approach to an approximation theorem of Axler and Shields, which says that the uniform algebra on the closed unit disc closure(D) generated by z and h --- where h is a nowhere-holomorphic harmonic function on D that is continuous up to the boundary --- equals the algebra of continuous functions on closure(D). The abstract tools used by Axler and Shields make harmonicity of h an essential condition for their result. We use the concepts of plurisubharmonicity and polynomial convexity to show that, in fact, the same conclusion is reached if h is replaced by h+R, where R is a non-harmonic perturbation whose Laplacian is "small" in a certain sense.
We obtain various general conditions in terms of the balayage and Green's functions under which the sequence of points is the zero set for weighted spaces of holomorphic functions in a domain on the complex plane.
Kalantari's Geometric Modulus Principle describes the local behavior of the modulus of a polynomial. Specifically, if $p(z) = a_0 + \sum_{j=k}^n a_j\left(z-z_0\right)^j,\;a_0a_ka_n \neq 0$, then the complex plane near $z = z_0$ comprises $2k$ sectors of angle $\fracπ{k}$, alternating between arguments of ascent (angles $θ$ where $|p(z_0 + te^{iθ})| > |p(z_0)|$ for small $t$) and arguments of descent (where the opposite inequality holds). In this paper, we generalize the Geometric Modulus Principle to holomorphic and harmonic functions. As in Kalantari's original paper, we use these extensions …
We give an explicit relation between the slope of the trajectory of a semigroup of holomorphic functions and the harmonic measure of the associated planar domain ${\varOmega}$. We use this to construct a semigroup whose slope is an arbitrary interval in $ [π/2,-π/2] $. The same method is used for the slope of a backward trajectory approaching a super-repulsive fixed point.
The tension equation for a mapping $f:{\mathbb C}\to {\mathbb C}$ is the nonlinear second order equation \[ Δf +φ(f) f_z f_{\bar z} = 0\] Solutions are "harmonic" mappings. Here we give a complete description of the solution space of mappings of degree 1 to this equation when $φ$ is entire. Each solution is a quasiconformal surjection and when the set of normalised solutions is endowed with the Teichmüller metric, the solution space is isometric to the hyperbolic plane. More generally, for harmonic mappings $f:Ω\to (\tildeΩ,ρ)$ between domains in ${\mathbb C}$, with $ρ(w)|dw|$ defining a flat …
Let $f$ be a harmonic map from a Riemann surface to a Riemannian $n$-manifold. We prove that if there is a holomorphic diffeomorphism $h$ between open subsets of the surface such that $f\circ h = f$, then $f$ factors through a holomorphic map onto another Riemann surface. If such $h$ is anti-holomorphic, we obtain an analogous statement. For minimal maps, this result is well known and is a consequence of the theory of branched immersions of surfaces due to Gulliver-Osserman-Royden. Our proof relies on various geometric properties of the Hopf differential.

The purpose of this paper is to develop some methods to study Riesz type inequalities, Hardy-Littlewood type theorems and smooth moduli of holomorphic, pluriharmonic and harmonic functions in high-dimensional cases. Initially, we prove some sharp Riesz type inequalities of pluriharmonic functions on bounded symmetric domains. The obtained results extend the main results in (\textit{Trans. Amer. Math. Soc.} {\bf 372} (2019)~ 4031--4051). Furthermore, some Hardy-Littlewood type theorems of holomorphic and pluriharmonic functions on John domains are established. Additionally, we also discuss the …
We completely characterize the mean ergodic composition operators on $H^\infty(\mathbb{B}_n)$. In particular, we show that a composition operator acting on this space is mean ergodic if and only if it is uniformly mean ergodic.
Let \Fc be a holomorphic foliation by curves defined in a neighborhood of 0 in \C^2 having 0 as a hyperbolic singularity. Let T be a harmonic current directed by \Fc which does not give mass to any of the two separatrices. Then we show that the Lelong number of T at 0 vanishes. Next, we apply this local result to investigate the global mass-distribution for directed harmonic currents on singular holomorphic foliations living on compact complex surfaces. Finally, we apply this global result to study the recurrence phenomenon of a generic leaf.
Let $K\backslash G$ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type and $Γ\,\subset\, G$ a closed torsionfree discrete subgroup. Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $ρ\, :\, π_1(X, x_0)\,\longrightarrow\, Γ$ a homomorphism such that the adjoint action of $ρ(π_1(X, x_0))$ on $\text{Lie}(G)$ is completely reducible. A theorem of Corlette associates to $ρ$ a harmonic map $X\, \longrightarrow\, K\backslash G/Γ$. We give a criterion for this harmonic map to be holomorphic. We also give a criterion for it to be anti--holomorphic.
Let $\mathcal{F}$ be a holomorphic foliation by curves defined in a neighborhood of $0$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ ($n\geq 2$) having $0$ as a weakly hyperbolic singularity. Let $T$ be a positive harmonic current directed by $\mathcal{F}$ which does not give mass to any of the $n$ coordinate invariant hyperplanes $\{z_j=0\}$ for $1\leq j\leq n.$ Then we show that the Lelong number of $T$ at $0$ vanishes. Moreover, an application of this local result in the global context is given. We discuss also the relation between several basic notions such as directed positive harmonic currents, directed positive d…
We give a new application of the theory of holomorphic motions to the study the distortion of level lines of harmonic functions and stream lines of ideal planar fluid flow. In various settings, we show they are in fact quasilines - the quasiconformal images of the real line. These methods also provide quite explicit global estimates on the geometry of these curves.
We prove some sharp inequalities for complex harmonic functions on the unit disk. The results extend a M. Riesz conjugate function theorem and some well-known estimates for holomorphic functions. We apply some of results to the isoperimetric inequality for harmonic mappings.
In this paper, we are concerned with the bicomplex analog of the well-known result asserting that real-valued harmonic functions, on simply connected domains, are the real parts of holomorphic functions. We show that this assertion, word for word, fails for bc-harmonic functions and we provide a complete characterization of bc-harmonic functions that are the hyperbolic real parts of a specific kind of bc-holomorphic functions. Moreover, we extend the result to bicomplex polyharmonic functions, which implies the introduction of specific classes of bc-polyholomorphic functions.
Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^n$ be a bounded domain and let $\mathcal{A} \subset \mathcal{C}(\barΩ)$ be a uniform algebra generated by a set $F$ of holomorphic and pluriharmonic functions. Under natural assumptions on $Ω$ and $F$ we show that the only obstruction to $\mathcal{A} = \mathcal{C}(\barΩ)$ is that there is a holomorphic disk $D \subset \barΩ$ such that all functions in $F$ are holomorphic on $D$, i.e., the only obstruction is the obvious one. This generalizes work by A. Izzo. We also have a generalization of Wermer's maximality theorem to the (distinguished boundary of the) bidisk.
We study subharmonic functions whose Laplacian is supported on a null set and in connected components of of the complement to the support admit harmonic extensions to larger sets. We prove that if such a function has a piecewise holomorphic derivative, then it is locally piecewise harmonic. In generic cases it coincides locally with the maximum of finitely many harmonic functions. Moreover, we describe the support when the holomorphic derivative satisfies a global algebraic equation. The proofs follow classical patterns and our methods may also be of independent interest.
We prove some isoperimetric type inequalities for real harmonic functions in the unit disk belonging to the Hardy space $h^p$, $p>1$ and for complex harmonic functions in $h^4$. The results extend some recent results on the area. Further we discus some Riesz type results for holomorphic functions.
Let D be a bounded domain in the complex plane whose boundary consists of m pairwise disjoint simple closed curves where m is greater than one. Let A(bD) be the algebra of all continuous functions on bD which extend holomorphically through D. We show that a continuous function f on bD belongs to A(bD) if for each g in A(bD) the harmonic extension of Re(fg) to D has a single valued conjugate.
In this paper, we prove necessary and sufficient conditions for a sense-preserving harmonic function to be absolutely convex in the open unit disk. We also estimate the coefficient bound and obtain growth, covering and area theorems for absolutely convex harmonic mappings. A natural generalization of the classical Bernardi type operator for harmonic functions is considered and its connection between certain classes of uniformly starlike harmonic functions and uniformly convex harmonic functions is also investigated. At the end, as applications, we present a number of results connected with hyp…
D. Khavinson and G. Swiatek proved that harmonic polynomials p(z)+q(z), where p is holomorphic, q is antiholomorphic, and deg p = n > 1 = deg q, can have at most 3n-2 complex zeros. We show that this bound is sharp for all n by proving a conjecture of Sarason and Crofoot about the existence of holomorphic polynomials p which map all critical points to their complex conjugates. We also count the number of equivalence classes of real polynomials solving this system of equations. The methods employed rely on Thurston's characterization of post-critically finite rational maps, in particular the re…
We study several new invariants associated to a holomorphic projective structure on a Riemann surface of finite analytic type: the Lyapunov exponent of its holonomy which is of probabilistic/dynamical nature and was introduced in our previous work; the degree which measures the asymptotic covering rate of the developing map; and a family of harmonic measures on the Riemann sphere, previously introduced by Hussenot. We show that the degree and the Lyapunov exponent are related by a simple formula and give estimates for the Hausdorff dimension of the harmonic measures in terms of the Lyapunov ex…
We show that, if $f$ is an outer function and $a\in[0,1)$, then the set of functions $\{\log |(f\circψ)^*|: ψ:\mathcal{D}\to\mathcal{D} \text{ holomorphic}, |ψ(0)|\le a\}$ is uniformly integrable on the unit circle. As an application, we derive a simple proof of the fact that, if $f$ is outer and $ϕ:\mathcal{D}\to\mathcal{D}$ is holomorphic, then $f\circϕ$ is outer.
Let $(ϕ_t)_{t \geq 0}$ be a semigroup of holomorphic functions in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ and $K$ a compact subset of $\mathbb{D}$. We investigate the conditions under which the backward orbit of $K$ under the semigroup exists. Subsequently, the geometric characteristics, as well as, potential theoretic quantities for the backward orbit of $K$ are examined. More specifically, results are obtained concerning the asymptotic behavior of its hyperbolic area and diameter, the harmonic measure and the capacity of the condenser that $K$ forms with the unit disk.
For a harmonic diffeomorphism between the Poincaré disks, Wan showed the equivalence between the boundedness of the Hopf differential and the quasi-conformality. In this paper, we will generalize this result from quadratic differentials to $r$-differetials. We study the relationship between bounded holomorphic $r$-differentials and the induced curvature of the associated harmonic maps from the unit disk to the symmetric space $SL(r,\mathbb R)/SO(r)$ arising from cyclic/subcyclic harmonic Higgs bundles. Also, we show the equivalences between the boundedness of holomorphic differentials and havi…
Let F be a holomorphic foliation of P^2 by Riemann surfaces. Assume all the singular points of F are hyperbolic. If F has no algebraic leaf, then there is a unique positive harmonic $(1,1)$ current $T$ of mass one, directed by F. This implies strong ergodic properties for the foliation. We also study the harmonic flow associated to the current $T.$
Let $E$ be a holomorphic vector bundle endowed with a singular Hermitian metric $H$. In this paper, we develop the harmonic theory on $(E,H)$. Then we extend several canonical results of J. Kollár and K. Takegoshi to this situation. In the end, we generalise Nakano's vanishing theorem.
