A slip model for gas flows in micro/nano-channels induced by external body forces is derived based on Maxwell's collision theory between gas molecules and the wall. The model modifies the relationship between slip velocity and velocity gradient at the walls by introducing a new parameter in addition to the classic Tangential Momentum Accommodation Coefficient. Three-dimensional Molecular Dynamics simulations of helium gas flows under uniform body force field between copper flat walls with different channel height are used to validate the model and to determine this new parameter.
We study slip boundary conditions for simple fluids at surfaces with nanoscale chemical heterogeneities. Using a perturbative approach, we examine the flow of a Newtonian fluid far from a surface described by a heterogeneous Navier slip boundary condition. In the far-field, we obtain expressions for an effective slip boundary condition in certain limiting cases. These expressions are compared to numerical solutions which show they work well when applied in the appropriate limits. The implications for experimental measurements and for the design of surfaces that exhibit large slip lengths are d…
This research paper is intended to study the nanoparticles shapes on peristalsis of Casson fluid in a channel flow by considering Joule heating effects. The study of such flows has various relevance applications in biomedical engineering and industries. Slip conditions is maintained at the velocity, temperature and nanoparticle concentration. The problem is modeled in terms of partial differential equations with suitable slip boundary conditions and then computed by using semi analytical technique known as Homotopy Analysis Method with Mathematica software. The influences of nanoparticles shap…
We employ micro-particle image velocimetry ($μ$-PIV) to investigate laminar micro-flows in hydrophobic microstructured channels, in particular the slip length. These microchannels consist of longitudinal micro-grooves, which can trap air and prompt a shear-free boundary condition and thus slippage enhancement. Our measurements reveal an increase of the slip length when the width of the micro-grooves is enlarged. The result of the slip length is smaller than the analytical prediction by Philip et al. [1] for an infinitely large and textured channel comprised of alternating shear-free and no-sli…
We performed non-equilibrium Molecular Dynamics simulations of water flow in nano-channels with the aim of discriminating {\it static} from {\it dynamic} contributions of the solid surface to the slip length of the molecular flow. We show that the regularization of the slip length divergence at high shear rates, formerly attributed to the wall dynamics, is controlled instead by its static properties. Surprisingly, we find that atomic displacements at the Angstrom scale are sufficient to remove the divergence of the slip length and realize the no-slip condition. Since surface thermal fluctuatio…
Although many molecular dynamics simulations have been conducted on slip flow on graphene, experimental efforts remain very limited and our understanding of the flow friction on graphene remains far from sufficient. Here, to accurately measure the slip length in rectangular nanochannels, we develop a 3D capillary flow model that fully considers the nonuniform cross-section velocity profile, slip boundary conditions, and the dynamic contact angle. We show that the 3D analysis is necessary even for a channel with a width/height ratio of 100. We fabricated graphene nanochannels with 45-nm depth a…
In this paper, we applied the Shan-Chen multiphase Lattice Boltzmann method to simulate two different parameters, contact angle (a static parameter) and slip length (a dynamic parameter), and we proposed a relationship between them by fitting those numerical simulation results. By changing the values of the strength of interaction between fluid particles (SIF) and the strength of interaction between fluid and solid surface (SIFS), we simulated a series of contact angles and slip lengths. Our numerical simulation results show that both SIF and SIFS have little effects on the relationship betwee…
On microstructured hydrophobic surfaces, geometrical patterns may lead to the appearance of a superhydrophobic state, where gas bubbles at the surface can have a strong impact on the fluid flow along such surfaces. In particular, they can strongly influence a detected slip at the surface. We present two-phase lattice Boltzmann simulations of a flow over structured surfaces with attached gas bubbles and demonstrate how the detected slip depends on the pattern geometry, the bulk pressure, or the shear rate. Since a large slip leads to reduced friction, our results allow to assist in the optimiza…
We consider the flow of a Newtonian fluid in a nano or microchannel with walls that have patterned variations in slip length. We formulate a set of equations to describe the effects on an incompressible Newtonian flow of small variations in slip, and solve these equations for slow flows. We test these equations using molecular dynamics simulations of flow between two walls which have patterned variations in wettability. Good qualitative agreement and a reasonable degree of quantitative agreement is found between the theory and the molecular dynamics simulations. The results of both analyses sh…
Many experiments have shown large flow enhancement ratios (up to 10^5) in carbon nanotubes (CNT) with diameters larger than 5nm. However, molecular dynamics simulations have never replicated these results maintaining a three-order-of-magnitude gap with measurements. Our study provides a generic model of nanofluidics for continuum slip flow (diameter>3nm) that fills this significant gap and sheds light on its origin. Compared to 140 literature cases, the model explains the entire range of experimental flow enhancements by changes of nanotube diameters and finite variations of interfacial energi…
The motion of the three-phase contact line between two immiscible fluids and a solid surface arises in a variety of wetting phenomena and technological applications. One challenge in continuum theory is the effective representation of molecular phenomena close to the contact line. Here, we characterize the molecular processes of the moving contact line to assess the accuracy of two different continuum two-phase models. Specifically, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a two-dimensional droplet between two moving plates are used to create reference data for different capillary numbers and co…
The influence of periodic and random surface textures on the flow structure and effective slip length in Newtonian fluids is investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We consider a situation where the typical pattern size is smaller than the channel height and the local boundary conditions at wetting and nonwetting regions are characterized by finite slip lengths. In case of anisotropic patterns, transverse flow profiles are reported for flows over alternating stripes of different wettability when the shear flow direction is misaligned with respect to the stripe orientation. The ang…
We study hydrodynamics, heat transfer and entropy generation in pressure-driven microchannel flow of a power-law fluid. Specifically, we address the effect of asymmetry in the slip boundary condition at the channel walls. Constant, uniform but unequal heat fluxes are imposed at the walls in this thermally developed flow. The effect of asymmetric slip on the velocity profile, on the wall shear stress, on the temperature distribution, on the Bejan number profiles, and on the average entropy generation and the Nusselt number are established through the numerical evaluation of exact analytical exp…
This work investigates electroviscous effects in presence of charge-dependent slip in steady pressure-driven laminar flow of a symmetric (1:1) electrolyte liquid through a uniformly charged slit contraction - expansion (4:1:4) microfluidic device. The mathematical model comprising Poisson's, Nernst-Planck, Navier-Stokes, and current continuity equations are solved numerically using finite element method (FEM). The flow fields (electrical potential, charge, induced electric field strength, pressure drop, and electroviscous correction factor) have been obtained and presented for a wide range of …
We investigate the dynamics of pressure driven transient flows of incompressible Newtonian fluids through circular microtubes having thin elastic walls under the long-wavelength and small deformation assumptions, which are valid for many industrial and biological processes. An analytical solution of the coupled fluid and solid equations is found using Navier slip boundary conditions and is shown to include some existing Womersley solutions as limiting cases. The effect of the slip length at the fluid-solid interface is analyzed for oscillatory pressure gradients using a range of slip ratio and…
In this work, the laminar decaying inlet swirl flow in a straight micro-pipe with wall slip is solved analytically and the solution verified numerically. Based on a fully developed parabolic axial velocity profiles, the swirl velocity equation is solved by the separation of variable technique. The solution is expressed as a function of the flow Reynolds number, the axial distance within the micro-pipe from the inlet, the wall slip and the inlet swirl velocity profile. The effects of the parameters on the swirl velocity distribution and the swirl decay are analyzed along the flow. Addition of a…
Cerebral aneurysms and microaneurysms are abnormal vascular dilatations with high risk of rupture. An aneurysmal rupture could cause permanent disability and even death. Finding and treating aneurysms before their rupture is very difficult since symptoms can be easily attributed mistakenly to other common brain diseases. Mathematical models could highlight possible mechanisms of aneurismal development and suggest specialized biomarkers for aneurysms. Existing mathematical models of intracranial aneurysms focus on mechanical interactions between blood flow and arteries. However, these models ca…
We review recent dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations of electrolyte flow in nanochannels. A method is presented by which the slip length $delta_B$ at the channel boundaries can be tuned systematically from negative to infinity by introducing suitably adjusted wall-fluid friction forces. Using this method, we study electroosmotic flow (EOF) in nanochannels for varying surface slip conditions and fluids of different ionic strength. Analytic expressions for the flow profiles are derived from the Stokes equation, which are in good agreement with the numerical results. Finally, we inves…
Interaction of motile microrganisms with a nearby solid substrate is a well studied phenomenon. However, the effects of hydrodynamic slippage on the substrate have received a little attention. In the present study, within the framework of the squirmer model, we impose a tangential velocity at the swimmer surface as a representation of the ciliatory propulsion and subsequently obtain exact solution of the Stokes equation based on a combined analytical-numerical approach. We illustrate how the near-wall swimming velocities are non-trivially altered by the interaction of wall slip and hydrodynami…
Surface roughness becomes relevant if typical length scales of the system are comparable to the scale of the variations as it is the case in microfluidic setups. Here, an apparent boundary slip is often detected which can have its origin in the assumption of perfectly smooth boundaries. We investigate the problem by means of lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulations and introduce an ``effective no-slip plane'' at an intermediate position between peaks and valleys of the surface. Our simulations show good agreement with analytical results for sinusoidal boundaries, but can be extended to arbitrary geo…
Nanofluidic systems show great promises for applications in energy conversion, where their performance can be enhanced by nanoscale liquid-solid slip. However, efficiency is also controlled by surface charge, which is known to reduce slip. Combining molecular dynamics simulations and analytical developments, we show the dramatic impact of surface charge distribution on the slip-charge coupling. Homogeneously charged graphene exhibits a very favorable slip-charge relation (rationalized with a new theoretical model correcting some weaknesses of the existing ones), leading to giant electrokinetic…
The ability to predict and/or control wall slip is a fundamental problem in the hydrodynamics of yield stress fluids, which is poorly understood to date and has important applications in bio- and micro-fluidic systems. Systematic measurements of steady flows of a simple yield stress fluid (Carbopol Ultrez 10) in a plane acrylic micro-channel are used to establish rigorous scaling laws for the wall velocity gradient and the slip velocity. By means of epi-fluorescent microscopy combined with a custom developed Digital Particle Image Velocimetry (DPIV) technique, times series of velocity fields w…
Substantial experimental, theoretical, as well as numerical effort has been invested to understand the effect of boundary slippage in microfluidic devices. However, even though such devices are becoming increasingly important in scientific, medical, and industrial applications, a satisfactory understanding of the phenomenon is still lacking. This is due to the extremely precise experiments needed to study the problem and the large number of tunable parameters in such systems. In this paper we apply a recently introduced algorithm to implement hydrophobic fluid-wall interactions in the lattice …
On the micro- and nanoscale, classical hydrodynamic boundary conditions such as the no-slip condition no longer apply. Instead, the flow profiles exhibit ``slip`` at the surface, which is characterized by a finite slip length (partial slip). We present a new, systematic way of implementing partial-slip boundary conditions with arbitrary slip length in coarse-grained computer simulations. The main idea is to represent the complex microscopic interface structure by a spatially varying effective viscous force. An analytical equation for the resulting slip length can be derived for planar and for …
Various experiments have found a boundary slip in hydrophobic microchannel flows, but a consistent understanding of the results is still lacking. While Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations cannot reach the low shear rates and large system sizes of the experiments, it is often impossible to resolve the needed details with macroscopic approaches. We model the interaction between hydrophobic channel walls and a fluid by means of a multi-phase lattice Boltzmann model. Our mesoscopic approach overcomes the limitations of MD simulations and can reach the small flow velocities of known experiments. We…
We present a mesoscopic model of the fluid-wall interactions for flows in microchannel geometries. We define a suitable implementation of the boundary conditions for a discrete version of the Boltzmann equations describing a wall-bounded single phase fluid. We distinguish different slippage properties on the surface by introducing a slip function, defining the local degree of slip for mesoscopic molecules at the boundaries. The slip function plays the role of a renormalizing factor which incorporates, with some degree of arbitrariness, the microscopic effects on the mesoscopic description. We …
Experiments on fluid systems in micro-/nano-scale solid conveyors have shown a violation of the no-slip assumption that have been adopted by the classical fluid mechanics. To correct this mechanics for the fluid slip, various approaches have been proposed to determine the slip boundary conditions. However, these approaches have revealed contradictory results for a variety of systems, and a debate on the mechanisms and the conditions of the fluid slip/no-slip past solid surfaces is sustained for a long time. In this paper, we establish the hybrid continuum-molecular modeling (HCMM) as a general…
When a capillary is inserted into a liquid, the liquid will rapidly flow into it. This phenomenon, well studied and understood on the macroscale, is investigated by Molecular Dynamics simulations for coarse-grained models of nanotubes. Both a simple Lennard-Jones fluid and a model for a polymer melt are considered. In both cases after a transient period (of a few nanoseconds) the meniscus rises according to a $\sqrt{\textrm{time}}$-law. For the polymer melt, however, we find that the capillary flow exhibits a slip length $δ$, comparable in size with the nanotube radius $R$. We show that a cons…
This article presents a computational approach for determining the optimal slip velocities on any given shape of an axisymmetric micro-swimmer suspended in a viscous fluid. The objective is to minimize the power loss to maintain a target swimming speed, or equivalently to maximize the efficiency of the micro-swimmer. Owing to the linearity of the Stokes equations governing the fluid motion, we show that this PDE-constrained optimization problem reduces to a simpler quadratic optimization problem, whose solution is found using a high-order accurate boundary integral method. We consider various …
A type of super-hydrophobic surface consists of a solid plane boundary with an array of grooves which, due to the effect of surface tension, prevent a complete wetting of the wall. The effect is greatest when the grooves are aligned with the flow. The pressure difference between the liquid and the gas in the grooves causes a curvature of the liquid surface resisted by surface tension. The effects of this surface deformation are studied in this paper. The corrections to the effective slip length produced by the curvature are analyzed theoretically and a comparison with available data and relate…
The phenomenon of apparent slip in micro-channel flows is analyzed by means of a two-phase mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann model including non-ideal fluid-fluid and fluid-wall interactins. The weakly-inhomogeneous limit of this model is solved analytically. The present mesoscopic approach permits to access much larger scales than molecular dynamics, and comparable with those attained by continuum methods. However, at variance with the continuum approach, the existence of a gas layer near the wall does not need to be postulated a priori, but emerges naturally from the underlying non-ideal mesoscop…
This paper studies the nature of the effective velocity boundary conditions for liquid flow over a plane boundary on which small free-slip islands are randomly distributed. It is found that, to lowest order in the area fraction $β$ covered by free-slip regions with characteristic size $a$, a macroscopic Navier-type slip condition emerges with a slip length of the order of $aβ$. The study is motivated by recent experiments which suggest that gas nano-bubbles may form on solid walls and may be responsible for the appearance of a partial slip boundary conditions for liquid flow. The results are a…
Further improvements are made to the non-linear data analysis algorithm for the atomic force microscope [P. Attard, arXiv:1212.3019v2 (2012)]. The algorithm is required when there is curvature in the compliance region due to photo-diode non-linearity. Results are obtained for the hydrodynamic drainage force, for three surfaces: hydrophilic silica (symmetric, Si-Si), hydrophobic dichlorodimethylsilane (symmetric, DCDMS-DCDMS), and hydrophobic octadecyltrichlorosilane (asymmetric, Si-OTS). The drainage force was measured in the viscous liquid di-n-octylphthalate. The slip-lengths are found to be…
