We present new mm interferometric and optical integral-field unit (IFU) observations and construct a sample of 12 E and S0 galaxies with molecular gas which have both CO and optical maps. The galaxies contain 2 x 10^7 to 5 x 10^9 M\odot of molecular gas distributed primarily in central discs or rings (radii 0.5 to 4 kpc). The molecular gas distributions are always coincident with distributions of optically-obscuring dust that reveal tightly-wound spiral structures in many cases. The ionised gas always approximately corotates with the molecular gas, evidencing a link between these two gas components, yet star formation is not always the domi- nant ionisation source. The galaxies with less molecular gas tend to have [O III]/Hβ emission-line ratios at high values not expected for star formation. Most E/S0s with molecular gas have young or intermediate age stellar populations based on optical colours, ultraviolet colours and absorption linestrengths. The few that appear purely old lie close to the limit where such populations would be undetectable based on the mass fractions of expected young to observed old stars. The 8μm polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and 24μm emission yield similar star formation rate estimates of E/S0s, but the total infrared overpredicts the rate due to a contribution to dust heating from older stars. The radio-far infrared relation also has much more scatter than for other star-forming galaxies. However, despite these biases and additional scatter, the derived star formation rates locate the E/S0 galaxies within the large range of the Schmidt-Kennicutt and constant efficiency star formation laws. Thus the star formation process in E/S0s is not overwhelmingly different than in other star-forming galaxies, although one of the more reliable tracers (24μm) points to a possible lower star-formation efficiency at a given gas surface density.
Many of the early-type galaxies observed so far at z>1 turned out to have smaller radii with respect to that of a typical present-day early-type galaxy with comparable mass. This has generated the conviction that in the past early-type galaxies were more compact, hence denser, and that as a consequence, they should have increased their radius across the time to reconcile with the present-day ones. However, observations have not yet established whether the population of early-types in the early Universe was fully represented by compact galaxies nor if they were so much more numerous than in the…
The most recent results and some of the open key questions on the evolution of early-type galaxies are reviewed in the general cosmological context of massive galaxy formation.
We present the Evolution of molecular Gas in Normal Galaxies (EGNoG) survey, an observational study of molecular gas in 31 star-forming galaxies from z=0.05 to z=0.5, with stellar masses of (4-30)x10^10 M_Sun and star formation rates of 4-100 M_Sun yr^-1. This survey probes a relatively un-observed redshift range in which the molecular gas content of galaxies is expected to have evolved significantly. To trace the molecular gas in the EGNoG galaxies, we observe the CO(1-0) and CO(3-2) rotational lines using the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA). We detect 24 of 3…
The observation that AGN host galaxies preferentially inhabit the "green valley" between the blue cloud and the red sequence has significant consequences for our understanding of the co-evolution of galaxies and black holes via accretion events. I discuss the interpretation of green valley AGN host galaxy colours with particular focus on early-type galaxies.
I review recent and less recent work on globular cluster systems in early-type galaxies. Explaining their properties and possible assembly scenarios, touches on a variety of astrophysical topics from cluster formation itself to galaxy formation and evolution and even details of observational techniques. The spectacular cluster systems of central galaxies in galaxy clusters may owe their richness to a plethora of less spectacular galaxies and their star formation processes. It seems that dwarf galaxies occupy a particularly important role.
We present a simple, empirically motivated model that simultaneously predicts the evolution of the mean size and the comoving mass density of massive early-type galaxies from z=2 to the present. First we demonstrate that some size evolution of the population can be expected simply due to the continuous emergence of early-type galaxies. SDSS data reveal that in the present-day universe more compact early-type galaxies with a given dynamical mass have older stellar populations. In contrast, at a given stellar velocity dispersion, SDSS data show that there is no relation between size and age, whi…
Powerful radio-AGN are normally hosted by massive elliptical galaxies which are usually very poor in molecular gas. Nevertheless the gas is needed in the very center to feed the nuclear activity. Thus it is important to study the origin, the distribution and the kinematics of the molecular gas in such objects. We have performed at the IRAM-30m telescope a survey of the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission in the most powerful radio galaxies of the Local Universe, selected only on the basis of their radio-continuum fluxes. The main result of this survey is the very low content in molecular gas of such …
We have measured the radio continuum emission of 396 early-type galaxies brighter than K = 9, using 1.4 GHz imagery from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey, Green Bank 300-ft Telescope and 64-m Parkes Radio Telescope. For M_K < -24 early-type galaxies, the distribution of radio powers at fixed absolute magnitude spans 4 orders of magnitude and the median radio power is proportional to K-band luminosity to the power 2.78\pm0.16. The measured flux densities of M_K < -25.5 early-type galaxies are greater than zero in all cases. It is thus highly likely that the most massive galaxies always host an active ga…
Present-day massive galaxies are composed mostly of early-type objects. It is unknown whether this was also the case at higher redshifts. In a hierarchical assembling scenario the morphological content of the massive population is expected to change with time from disk-like objects in the early Universe to spheroid-like galaxies at present. In this paper we have probed this theoretical expectation by compiling a large sample of massive (M_{stellar}>10^{11} h_{70}^{-2} M_{Sun}$) galaxies in the redshift interval 0 < z < 3. Our sample of 1082 objects comprises 207 local galaxies selected from SD…
I have combined the Emsellem et al. ATLAS3D rotation measures of a large sample of early-type galaxies with HST-based classifications of their central structure to characterize the rotation velocities of galaxies with cores. "Core galaxies" rotate slowly, while "power-law galaxies" (galaxies that lack cores) rotate rapidly, confirming the analysis of Faber et al. Significantly, the amplitude of rotation sharply discriminates between the two types in the -19 > Mv > -22 domain over which the two types coexist. The slow rotation in the small set of core galaxies with Mv > -20, in particular, brin…
We use high-resolution K-band VLT/HAWK-I imaging over 0.25 square degrees to study the structural evolution of massive early-type galaxies since z~1. Mass-selected samples, complete down to log(M/M_sun)~10.7 such that `typical' L* galaxies are included at all redshifts, are drawn from pre-existing photometric redshift surveys. We then separated the samples into different redshift slices and classify them as late- or early-type galaxies on the basis of their specific star-formation rate. Axis-ratio measurements for the ~400 early-type galaxies in the redshift range 0.6<z<1.8 are accurate to 0.1…
We present the second of two papers concerning the origin and evolution of local early-type galaxies exhibiting dust features. We use optical and radio data to examine the nature of active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity in these objects, and compare these with a carefully constructed control sample. We find that dust lane early-type galaxies are much more likely to host emission-line AGN than the control sample galaxies. Moreover, there is a strong correlation between radio and emission-line AGN activity in dust lane early-types, but not the control sample. Dust lane early-type galaxies show …
The results of photometric decomposition of surface brightness distributions in 85 early-type unbarred galaxies are presented. The SDSS r-images are analysed. Double-tiered exponential disks are found in all galaxies which are studied; the statistics of the disk parameters is derived.
The influence of environment on the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies is, as yet, an unresolved issue. Constraints can be placed on models of early-type galaxy formation and evolution by examining their stellar populations as a function of environment. We present a catalogue of galaxies well suited to such an investigation. The magnitude-limited (b_J<19.45) sample was drawn from four clusters (Coma, A1139, A3558, and A930 at <z>=0.04) and their surrounds. The catalogue contains luminosities, redshifts, velocity dispersions and Lick line strengths for 416 galaxies, of which 245 are…
We measure the evolution in the intrinsic shape distribution of early-type galaxies from z~1 to z~0 by analyzing their projected axis-ratio distributions. We extract a low-redshift sample (0.04 < z < 0.08) of early-type galaxies with very low star-formation rates from the SDSS, based on a color-color selection scheme and verified through the absence of emission lines in the spectra. The inferred intrinsic shape distribution of these early-type galaxies is strongly mass dependent: the typical short-to-long intrinsic axis-ratio of high-mass early-type galaxies (>1e11 M_sun) is 2:3, where as at m…
Many of the fundamental properties of early-type galaxies (ellipticals and lenticulars) can only be accessed by venturing beyond their oft-studied centers into their large-radius halo regions. Advances in observations of kinematical tracers allow early-type halos to be increasingly well probed. This review focuses on recent findings on angular momentum and dark matter content, and discusses some possible implications for galaxy structure and formation.
We present a study of the ionized gas in a sample of 65 nearby early-type galaxies, for which we have acquired optical intermediate-resolution spectra. Emission lines are detected in ~89 % of the sample. The incidence of emission appears independent from the E or S0 morphological classes. According to classical diagnostic diagrams, the majority of the galaxies are LINERs. However, the galaxies tend to move toward the "Composites" region (at lower [NII]/Halpha values) as the emission lines are measured at larger galacto-centric distances. This suggests that different ionization mechanisms may b…
Early-type galaxies are characterized by many scaling relations. One of them, the so-called fundamental plane is a relatively tight correlation between three variables, and has resisted a clear physical understanding despite many years of intensive research. Here, we show that the correlation between the three variables of the fundamental plane can be the artifact of the effect of another parameter influencing all, so that the fundamental plane may be understood as a confounding correlation. Indeed, the complexity of the physics of galaxies and of their evolution suggests that the main confoun…
We present optical through radio observations of the host galaxies of two dust obscured, luminous quasars selected in the mid-infrared, at z=2.62 and z=2.99, including a search for CO emission. Our limits on the CO luminosities are consistent with these objects having masses of molecular gas <~10^10 solar masses, several times less than those of luminous submillimeter-detected galaxies (SMGs) at comparable redshifts. Their near-infrared spectral energy distributions, however, imply that these galaxies have high stellar masses (~10^11-12 solar masses). The relatively small reservoirs of molecul…
Powerful radio-AGN are hosted by massive elliptical galaxies which are usually very poor in molecular gas. Nevertheless gas is needed in the very center to feed the nuclear activity. We aim to study the molecular gas properties (mass, kinematics, distribution, origin) in such objects, and to compare them with results of other known samples. We have performed at the IRAM-30m telescope a survey of the CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) emission in the most powerful radio galaxies of the Local Universe, selected only on the basis of their radio continuum fluxes. The main result of our survey is the very low con…
I review some recent results about the molecular content of galaxies, obtained essentially from the CO lines, but also dense tracers, or the dust continuum emission. New results have been obtained on molecular cloud physics, and their efficiency to form stars, shedding light on the Kennicutt-Schmidt law as a function of surface density and galaxy type. Large progress has been made on galaxy at moderate and high redshifts, allowing to interprete the star formation history and star formation efficiency as a function of gas content, or galaxy evolution. In massive galaxies, the gas fraction was h…
The sizes of galaxies are known to be closely related with their masses, luminosities, redshifts and morphologies. However, when we fix these quantities and morphology, we still find large dispersions in the galaxy size distribution. We investigate the origin of these dispersions for red early-type galaxies, using two SDSS-based catalogs. We find that the sizes of faint galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) < 10.3 or M_r > -19.5, where M_r is the r-band absolute magnitude, k-corrected to z = 0.1) are affected more significantly by luminosity, while the sizes of bright galaxies (log(M_dyn/M_sun) > 11.4 or…
We examine the fraction of early-type (and spiral) galaxies found in groups and clusters of galaxies as a function of dark matter halo mass. We use morphological classifications from the Galaxy Zoo project matched to halo masses from both the C4 cluster catalogue and the Yang et al (2007) group catalogue. We find that the fraction of early-type (or spiral) galaxies remains constant (changing by less than 10%) over three orders of magnitude in halo mass (13<log MH/Msol/h<15.8). This result is insensitive to our choice of halo mass measure, from velocity dispersions or summed optical luminosity.…
Based on two models, we investigate the molecular-to-atomic gas ratio in Virgo cluster galaxies in comparison with field galaxies. We show that the enhanced metallicity for cluster members and the ram pressure stripping of atomic gas from the disk periphery cannot fully explain the observed gas component ratios. The additional environmental factors affecting the interstellar medium and leading to an increase in the molecular gas fraction should be taken into account for cluster galaxies.
We present the Fundamental Plane (FP) of field early-type galaxies at 0.5<z<1.0. Our project is a continuation of our efforts to understand the formation and evolution of early-type galaxies in different environments. The target galaxies were selected from the comprehensive and homogeneous data set of the Gemini/HST Galaxy Cluster Project. The distant field early-type galaxies follow a steeper FP relation compared to the local FP. The change in the slope of the FP can be interpreted as a mass-dependent evolution. Similar results have been found for cluster early-type galaxies in high redshift …
We present the results of 12CO(J = 1-0) mapping observations toward four interacting galaxies in early and mid stages of the interaction to understand the behavior of molecular gas in galaxy-galaxy interaction. The observations were carried out using the 45-m telescope at Nobeyama Radio Observatory (NRO). We compared our CO total flux to those previously obtained with single-dish observations and found that there are no discrepancy between them. Applying a typical CO-H2 conversion factor, all constituent galaxies have molecular gas mass more than 10^9 M_sun. Comparisons to HI, Ks and tracers o…
We present a study of the cold gas contents of the Atlas3D early-type galaxies, in the context of their optical colours, near-UV colours, and Hβ absorption line strengths. Early-type (elliptical and lenticular) galaxies are not as gas-poor as previously thought, and at least 40% of local early-type galaxies are now known to contain molecular and/or atomic gas. This cold gas offers the opportunity to study recent galaxy evolution through the processes of cold gas acquisition, consumption (star formation), and removal. Molecular and atomic gas detection rates range from 10% to 34% in red sequenc…
We introduced a semi-analytic model to study the detail of radial related processes on galaxy disks. Based on this recipe, we can calculate neutral and molecular gas in interstellar medium, and include the molecular phase into star formation recipes. From our model, we reproduced the radial surface density profiles and mass functions shown in the observational results. We can also give some predictions and explanations to the scale relations of neutral and molecular gas in disk galaxies.
We present the detection of molecular gas from galaxies located in nearby voids using the CO line emission as a tracer. The observations were done using the 45m Nobeyama Radio Telescope. Void galaxies lie in the most under dense parts of our universe and a significant fraction of them are gas rich, late type spiral galaxies. Although isolated, they have ongoing star formation but appear to be slowly evolving compared to galaxies in denser environments. Not much is known about their star formation properties or cold gas content. In this study we searched for molecular gas in five void galaxies.…
The gravitational lensing of Bullet Clusters and early-type galaxies pose serious challenges on the validity of MOND. Recently, Finslerian MOND, a generalization of MOND in the framework of Finsler gravity, has been proposed to explain the mass discrepancy problem of Bullet Cluster 1E 0657\ 558. In this paper, we check the validity of the Finslerian MOND in describing the strong gravitational lensing of early-type galaxies. The investigation on ten strong lenses of the CASTLES samples shows that there is no strong evidence for the existence of dark matter.
Tidal debris around galaxies can yield important clues on their evolution. We have identified tidal debris in 11 early type galaxies (T \leq 0) from a sample of 65 early types drawn from the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G). The tidal debris includes features such as shells, ripples and tidal tails. A variety of techniques, including two-dimensional decomposition of galactic structures, was used to quantify the residual tidal features. The tidal debris contributes ~3 - 10% to the total 3.6 μm luminosity of the host galaxy. Structural parameters of the galaxies were estimat…
We report on a study of the isophotal shapes of early-type galaxies, to very faint levels reaching ~ 0.1% of the sky brightness. The galaxies are from the Large Format Camera (LFC) fields obtained using the Palomar 5 m Hale telescope, with integrated exposures ranging from 1 to 4 hours in the SDSS r, i and z bands. The shapes of isophotes of early-type galaxies are important as they are correlated with the physical properties of the galaxies and are influenced by galaxy formation processes. In this paper we report on a sample of 132 E and SO galaxies in one LFC field. We have redshifts for 53 …
We analyze $Chandra$ observations of the hot atmospheres of 40 early spiral and elliptical galaxies. Using new temperature, density, cooling time, and mass profiles, we explore relationships between their hot atmospheres and cold molecular gas. Molecular gas mass correlates with atmospheric gas mass and density over four decades from central galaxies in clusters to normal giant ellipticals and early spirals. The mass and density relations follow power laws: $M_{\rm mol} \propto M_{\rm X}^{1.4\pm0.1}$ and $M_{\rm mol} \propto n_{\rm e}^{1.8\pm0.3}$, respectively, at 10 kpc. The ratio of molecul…
The globular cluster systems of galaxies are well-known to extend to large galactocentric radii. Here we quantify the size of GC systems using the half number radius of 22 GC systems around early-type galaxies from the literature. We compare GC system sizes to the sizes and masses of their host galaxies. We find that GC systems typically extend to 4$\times$ that of the host galaxy size, however this factor varies with galaxy stellar mass from about 3$\times$ for M$^{\ast}$ galaxies to 5$\times$ for the most massive galaxies in the universe. The size of a GC system scales approximately linearly…
We have investigated the radial g-r color gradients of early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR6 in the redshift range 0.00<z<0.06. The majority of massive early-type galaxies show a negative color gradient (red-cored) as generally expected for early-type galaxies. On the other hand, roughly 30 per cent of the galaxies in this sample show a positive color gradient (blue-cored). These "blue-cored" galaxies often show strong H beta absorption line strengths and/or emission line ratios that are indicative of the presence of young stellar populations. Combining the optical dat…
Compact groups (CGs) provide an environment in which interactions between galaxies and with the intra-group medium enable and accelerate galaxy transitions from actively star forming to quiescent. Galaxies in transition from active to quiescent can be selected, by their infrared (IR) colors, as canyon or infrared transition zone (IRTZ) galaxies. We used a sample of CG galaxies with IR data from the Wide Field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) allowing us to calculate the stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR) for each galaxy. Furthermore, we present new CO(1-0) data for 27 galaxies and colle…
The hierarchical galaxy formation scenario in the Cold Dark Matter cosmogony with a non-vanishing cosmological constant and geometrically flat space has been very successful in explaining the large-scale distribution of galaxies. However, there have been claims that the scenario predicts too many satellite galaxies associated with massive galaxies compared to observations, called the missing satellite galaxy problem. Isolated groups of galaxies hosted by passively evolving massive early-type galaxies are ideal laboratories for finding the missing physics in the current theory. Here we report f…
We have carried out a systematic, homogeneous comparison of optical and near-infrared dispersions. Our magnitude-limited sample of early-type galaxies in the Fornax cluster comprises 11 elliptical and 11 lenticular galaxies more luminous than MB = -17. We were able to determine the central dispersions based on the near-infrared CO absorption band head for 19 of those galaxies. The velocity dispersions range from less than 70 km/s to over 400 km/s. We compare our near-infrared velocity dispersions to the optical dispersions measured by Kuntschner (2000). Contrary to previous studies, we find a …
I briefly review what has been recently learned from determinations of mean stellar ages and abundances from integrated light studies of early-type galaxies, and discuss some new questions posed by recent data. A short discussion of spectroscopic ages is presented, but the main focus of this review is on the abundances of Fe, Mg, Ca, N, and C, obtained from comparisons of measurements taken in integrated spectra of galaxies with predictions from stellar population synthesis models.
Many star-forming galaxies and those hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN) show evidence of massive outflows of material in a variety of phases including ionized, neutral atomic, and molecular. Molecular outflows in particular have been the focus of recent interest as they may be responsible for removing gas from the galaxy, thereby suppressing star formation. As material is ejected from the cores of galaxies, interactions of the outflowing material with the interstellar medium can accelerate cosmic rays and produce high-energy gamma rays. In this work, we search for gamma-ray emission from a s…
