We give a superconnection proof of the cohomological form of Mathai-Melrose-Singer index theorem for the family of twisted Dirac operators under relaxed conditions.
Mathai, Melrose, and Singer introduced the notion of projective elliptic operators on manifolds equipped with an Azumaya bundle. In this note we compute the equivariant index of transversally elliptic operators that are the pullback of projective elliptic operators on the trivialization of the Azumaya bundle. It encompasses the fractional index formula of projective elliptic operator by Mathai-Melrose-Singer.
We calculate the equivariant index formula for an infinite dimensional Clifford module canonically associated to any Riemannian manifold. It encompasses the fractional index formula of the projective Dirac operator by Mathai--Melrose--Singer.
A families index theorem in K-theory is given for the setting of Atiyah, Patodi and Singer of a family of Dirac operators with spectral boundary condition. This result is deduced from such a K-theory index theorem for the calculus of cusp, or more generally fibred cusp, pseudodifferential operators on the fibres (with boundary) of a fibration; a version of Poincare duality is also shown in this setting, identifying the stable Fredholm families with elements of a bivariant K-group.
We construct a canonical noncommutative spectral triple for every oriented closed Riemannian manifold, which represents the fundamental class in the twisted K-homology of the manifold. This so-called "projective spectral triple" is Morita equivalent to the well-known commutative spin spectral triple provided that the manifold is spin-c. We give an explicit local formula for the twisted Chern character for K-theories twisted with torsion classes, and with this formula we show that the twisted Chern character of the projective spectral triple is identical to the Poincaré dual of the A-hat genus …
An index theory for projective families of elliptic pseudodifferential operators is developed. The topological and the analytic index of such a family both take values in twisted K-theory of the parametrizing space, X. The main result is the equality of these two notions of index when the twisting class is in the torsion subgroup of H^3(X;Z). The Chern character of the index class is then computed.
An index theory for projective families of elliptic pseudodifferential operators is developed when the twisting, i.e. Dixmier-Douady, class is decomposable. One of the features of this special case is that the corresponding Azumaya bundle can be realized in terms of smoothing operators. The topological and the analytic index of a projective family of elliptic operators both take values in the twisted K-theory of the parameterizing space. The main result is the equality of these two notions of index. The twisted Chern character of the index class is then computed by a variant of Chern-Weil theo…
We characterize the first min-max width of real projective spaces of any dimension. The width is the minimum area over the Clifford hypersurfaces. We also compute the Morse index of the Clifford hypersurfaces in the complex and quaternionic projective spaces.
We estimate the dimensions of the spaces of holomorphic sections of certain line bundles to give improved lower bounds on the index of complex isotropic harmonic maps to complex projective space from the sphere and torus, and in some cases from higher genus surfaces.
In this note the fractional analytic index, for a projective elliptic operator associated to an Azumaya bundle, of DG/0402329 is related to the equivariant index of Atiyah and Singer for an associated transversally elliptic operator.
We define a geometric invariant and an index (+1 or -1) for projective umbilics of smooth surfaces. We prove that the sum of the indices of the projective umbilics inside a connected component H of the hyperbolic domain remains constant in any 1-parameter family of surfaces if the topological type of H does not change. We prove the same statement for any connected component E of the elliptic domain. We give formulas for the invariant and for the index which do not depend on any normal form.
We show that the Clifford torus and the totally geodesic real projective plane RP^2 in the complex projective plane CP^2 are the unique Hamiltonian stable minimal Lagrangian compact surfaces of CP^2 with genus less than or equal to 4, when the surface is orientable, and with Euler characteristic greater than or equal to -1, when the surface is nonorientable. Also we characterize RP^2 in CP^2 as the least possible index minimal Lagrangian compact nonorientable surface of CP^2.
The paper is grown from the lecture course "Metric projective geometry" which I hold at the summer school "Finsler geometry with applications" at Karlovassi, Samos, in 2014, and at the workshop before the 8th seminar on Geometry and Topology of the Iranian Mathematical society at the Amirkabir University of Technology in 2015. The goal of this lecture course was to show how effective projectively invariant objects can be used to solve natural and named problems in differential geometry, and this paper also does it: I give easy new proofs to many known statements, and also prove the following n…
The main two families of real hypersurfaces in complex space forms are Hopf and ruled. However, very little is known about real hypersurfaces in the indefinite complex projective space $\cpn$. In a previous work, Kimura and the second author introduced Hopf real hypersurfaces in $\cpn$. In this paper, ruled real hypersurfaces in the indefinite complex projective space are introduced, as those whose maximal holomorphic distribution is integrable, and such that the leaves are totally geodesic holomorphic hyperplanes. A detailed description of the shape operator is computed, obtaining two main di…
Extending ideas of Atiyah--Bott--Shapiro and Quillen, we construct a model for differential $\rm KO$-theory whose cocycles are families of Clifford modules with superconnection. The model is built to accommodate an analytic pushforward for bundles of spin manifolds, affording a differential refinement of Atiyah and Singer's families index.
We apply the equivariance --> families principle to a geometric family of Clifford module bundles with an action of a compact Lie group G to prove an equivariant version of Bismut's families index theorem on the differential Borel quotient of the geometric family.
We prove the index theorem for elliptic operators acting on sections of bundles where fiber is equal to a projective module over a C*-algebra, in the situation of action of a compact Lie group on this algebra as well as on the total space commuting with symbol. As an application the equivariant index theorem for families over the direct product of base by the space of parameters is obtained.
Manifolds with fibered hyperbolic cusp metrics include hyperbolic manifolds with cusps and locally symmetric spaces of Q-rank one. We extend Vaillant's treatment of Dirac-type operators associated to these metrics by weaking the hypotheses on the boundary families through the use of Fredholm perturbations as in the family index theorem of Melrose and Piazza and by treating the index of families of such operators. We also extend the index theorem of Moroianu and Leichtnam-Mazzeo-Piazza to families of perturbed Dirac-type operators associated to fibered cusp metrics (sometimes known as fibered b…
This is the final part of the work started in math.DG/0611281 and math.DG/0703916. Here the question of double fibration ois adressed both for relative k-theory and free multiplicative K-theory. In the case of relative and ``nonfree'' multiplicative K-theory, the direct image is proved to be functorial for double submersions.
We study families of Dirac-type operators, with compatible perturbations, associated to wedge metrics on stratified spaces. We define a closed domain and, under an assumption of invertible boundary families, prove that the operators are self-adjoint and Fredholm with compact resolvents and trace-class heat kernels. We establish a formula for the Chern character of their index.
We develop a categorical index calculus for elliptic symbol families. The categorified index problems we consider are a secondary version of the traditional problem of expressing the index class in K-theory in terms of differential-topological data. They include orientation problems for moduli spaces as well as similar problems for skew-adjoint and self-adjoint operators. The main result of this paper is an excision principle which allows the comparison of categorified index problems on different manifolds. Excision is a powerful technique for actually solving the orientation problem; applicat…
It is shown that moduli spaces of complete families of compact complex hypersurfaces in complex manifolds often come equipped canonically with projective structures satisfying some natural integrability conditions.
We compute explicitly, and without any extra regularity assumptions, the large time limit of the fibrewise heat operator for Bismut-Lott type superconnections in the L^2-setting. This is motivated by index theory on certain non-compact spaces (families of manifolds with cocompact group action) where the convergence of the heat operator at large time implies refined L^2-index formulas. As applications, we prove a local L^2-index theorem for families of signature operators and an L^2-Bismut-Lott theorem, expressing the Becker-Gottlieb transfer of flat bundles in terms of Kamber-Tandeur classes. …
This is the sequel of the first part math.DG/0611281. Here, the procedure of transgressing the families index theorem (the so-called $η$-form) is adapted to take in account the case of Dirac type operators with kernels of varying dimension. The constructed form is then used to define the direct image under proper submersions of the ``free multiplicative'' $K$-theory which was defined in the first part, the behaviour of the characteristic classes on free multiplicative $K$-theory under submersion is studied. Some universal caracterisation of the forms is provided. Finally, combining our result …
Using heat kernel methods developed by Vaillant, a local index formula is obtained for families of d-bar operators on the Teichmuller universal curve of Riemann surfaces of genus g with n punctures. The formula also holds on the moduli space M{g,n} in the sense of orbifolds where it can be written in terms of Mumford-Morita-Miller classes. The degree two part of the formula gives the curvature of the corresponding determinant line bundle equipped with the Quillen connection, a result originally obtained by Takhtajan and Zograf.
In this paper, we first prove a Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau theorem over projective normal varieties smooth in codimension two. As a consequence we deduce the polystability of (dual) tensor products of stable reflexive sheaves, and we give a new proof of the Bogomolov-Gieseker inequality, along with a precise characterization of the case of equality. This also improves several previously known algebro-geometric results on normalized tautological classes. We study the limiting behavior of semistable bundles over a degenerating family of projective normal varieties. In the case of a family of stable…
We define the equivariant family index of a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the free action of a bundle $\GR$ of Lie groups. If the fibers of $\GR \to B$ are simply-connected solvable, we then compute the Chern character of the (equivariant family) index, the result being given by an Atiyah-Singer type formula. We also study traces on the corresponding algebras of pseudodifferential operators and obtain a local index formula for such families of invariant operators, using the Fedosov product. For topologically non-trivial bundles we have to use methods of non-commutative…
For a finite rank projective bundle over a compact manifold, so associated to a torsion, Dixmier-Douady, 3-class, w, on the manifold, we define the ring of differential operators `acting on sections of the projective bundle' in a formal sense. In particular, any oriented even-dimensional manifold carries a projective spin Dirac operator in this sense. More generally the corresponding space of pseudodifferential operators is defined, with supports sufficiently close to the diagonal, i.e. the identity relation. For such elliptic operators we define the numerical index in an essentially analytic …
We prove an index theorem for families of linear periodic Hamiltonian systems, which is reminiscent of the Atiyah-Singer index theorem for selfadjoint elliptic operators. For the special case of one-parameter families, we compare our theorem with a classical result of Salamon and Zehnder. Finally, we use the index theorem to study bifurcation of branches of periodic solutions for families of nonlinear Hamiltonian systems.
The goal of this paper is to apply the universal gerbe of \cite{CMi1} and \cite{CMi2} to give an alternative, simple and more unified view of the relationship between index theory and gerbes. We discuss determinant bundle gerbes \cite{CMMi1} and the index gerbe of \cite{L} for the case of families of Dirac operators on odd dimensional closed manifolds. The method also works for a family of Dirac operators on odd dimensional manifolds with boundary, for a pair of Melrose-Piazza's $Cl(1)$-spectral sections for a family of Dirac operators on even dimensional closed manifolds with vanishing index …
