An index theorem for gauge-invariant families: The case of solvable groups

We define the gauge-equivariant index of a family of elliptic operators invariant with respect to the free action of a family $\GR \to B$ of Lie groups (these families are called ``gauge-invariant families'' in what follows). If the fibers of $\GR \to B$ are simply-connected and solvable, we compute the Chern character of the gauge-equivariant index, the result being given by an Atiyah-Singer type formula that incorporates also topological information about the bundle $\GR \to B$. Intersections of finite families of finite index subfactors

We prove that finiteness of the index of the intersection of a finite set of finite index subalgebras in a von Neumann algebra (with small centre) is equivalent to the finite dimensionality of the algebra generated by the conditional expectations onto the subalgebras.

Multi-indexed p-orthogonal sums in non-commutative Lebesgue spaces

In this paper we extend a recent Pisier's inequality for p-orthogonal sums in non-commutative Lebesgue spaces. To that purpose, we generalize the notion of p-orthogonality to the class of multi-indexed families of operators. This kind of families appear naturally in certain non-commutative Khintchine type inequalities associated with free groups. Other p-orthogonal families are given by the homogeneous operator-valued polynomials in the Rademacher variables or the multi-indexed martingale difference sequences. As in Pisier's result, our tools are mainly combinatorial.

Index theory for actions of compact Lie groups on C*-algebras

We study the index theory for actions of compact Lie groups on C*-algebras with an emphasis on principal actions. Given an invariant semifinite trace on the C*-algebra we obtain semifinite spectral triples. For circle actions we consider the relation to the dual Pimsner-Voiculescu sequence. On the way we show that the notions ``saturated'' and ``principal'' are equivalent for actions by compact Lie groups.

Subfactors of index less than 5, part 1: the principal graph odometer

In this series of papers we show that there are exactly ten subfactors, other than $A_\infty$ subfactors, of index between 4 and 5. Previously this classification was known up to index $3+\sqrt{3}$. In the first paper we give an analogue of Haagerup's initial classification of subfactors of index less than $3+\sqrt{3}$, showing that any subfactor of index less than 5 must appear in one of a large list of families. These families will be considered separately in the three subsequent papers in this series.
