The effect of picosecond acoustic strain pulses (ps-ASP) on a thin layer of (Ga,Mn)As co-doped with phosphorus was probed using magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). A transient MOKE signal followed by low amplitude oscillations was evidenced, with a strong dependence on applied magnetic field, temperature and ps-ASP amplitude. Careful interferometric measurement of the layer's thickness variation induced by the ps-ASP allowed us to model very accurately the resulting signal, and interpret it as the strain modulated reflectivity (differing for $σ_{\pm}$ probe polarizations), independently from dynamic magnetization effects.
We demonstrate selective excitation of a spin wave mode in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As film by picosecond strain pulses. For a certain range of magnetic fields applied in the layer plane only a single frequency is detected for the magnetization precession. We explain this selectivity of spin mode excitation by the necessity of spatial matching of magnon and phonon eigenfunctions, which represents a selection rule analogous to momentum conservation for magnon-phonon interaction in bulk ferromagnetic materials.
Quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse picosecond strain pulses injected into a ferromagnetic (311) (Ga,Mn)As film induce dynamical shear strain in the film, thereby modulating the magnetic anisotropy and inducing resonant precession of the magnetization at a frequency ~10 GHz. The modulation of the out-of-plane magnetization component by the quasitransverse strain reaches amplitudes as large as 10% of the equilibrium magnetization. Our theoretical analysis is in good agreement with the observed results, thus providing a strategy for ultrafast magnetization control in ferromagnetic films by s…

Coherent phonons (CP) generated by laser pulses on the femtosecond scale have been proposed as a means to achieve ultrafast, non-thermal switching in phase-change materials such as Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$(GST). Here we use ultrafast optical pump pulses to induce coherent acoustic phonons and stroboscopically measure the corresponding lattice distortions in GST using 100 ps x-ray pulses from the ESRF storage ring. A linear-chain model provides a good description of the observed changes in the diffraction signal, however, the magnitudes of the measured shifts are too large to be explained by th…
Using femtosecond optical pulses, we have investigated the ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced in a dielectric film of bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi-YIG) buried below a thick Cu/Pt metallic bilayer. We show that exciting the sample from Pt surface launches an acoustic strain pulse propagating into the garnet film. We discovered that this strain pulse induces a coherent magnetization precession in the Bi-YIG at the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance. The observed phenomena can be explain by strain-induced changes of magnetocristalline anisotropy via the inverse magnetos…
By means of a metal opto-acoustic transducer we generate quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse picosecond strain pulses in a (311)-GaAs substrate and monitor their propagation by picosecond acoustic interferometry. By probing at the sample side opposite to the transducer the signals related to the compressive and shear strain pulses can be separated in time. In addition to conventional monitoring of the reflected probe light intensity we monitor also the polarization rotation of the optical probe beam. This polarimetric technique results in improved sensitivity of detection and provides comp…

It is shown theoretically that a giant magnetoelectric susceptibility exceeding 10^-6 s/m may be achieved in the ferromagnetic/ferroelectric epitaxial systems via the magnetization rotation induced by an electric field applied to the substrate. The predicted magnetoelectric anomaly results from the strain-driven spin-reorientation transitions in ferromagnetic films, which take place at experimentally accessible misfit strains in CoFe2O4 and Ni films.
The ferromagnetic properties of epitaxial La$_{0.5}$Sr$_{0.5}$CoO$_3$ thin films have been studied. The magnetic transition is affected by both strain and finite thickness. We have used a series of films of different thickness and on different substrates in order to quantitatively determine the change in Curie temperature contributed by each effect. The phase diagram of T$_C$ versus in-plane strain suggests that the ferromagnetic transition temperature is suppressed by tensile strain and enhanced by compressive strain. The general method of separating strain and finite thickness effects should…
The phenomenon of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) provides fundamental information on the physics of magnetic materials and lies at the heart of a variety of signal processing microwave devices. Here we demonstrate theoretically that substrate-induced lattice strains may change the FMR frequency of an epitaxial ferromagnetic film dramatically, leading to ultralow and ultrahigh resonance frequencies at room temperature. Remarkably, the FMR frequency varies with the epitaxial strain nonmonotonically, reaching minimum at a critical strain corresponding to the strain-induced spin reorientation trans…
We numerically demonstrate an ultrafast method to create $\textit{single}$ skyrmions in a $\textit{collinear}$ ferromagnetic sample by applying a picosecond (effective) magnetic field pulse in the presence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. For small samples the applied magnetic field pulse could be either spatially uniform or nonuniform while for large samples a nonuniform and localized field is more effective. We examine the phase diagram of pulse width and amplitude for the nucleation. Our finding could ultimately be used to design future skyrmion-based devices.
This paper reports the development of a methodology combining microstrip ferromagnetic resonance (MS-FMR) and digital image correlation (DIC) in order to silmuteanously measure the voltage-induced strains and the magnetic resonance in artificial magnetoelectric heterostructures (magnetic films/piezoelectric substrate? or magnetic films/flexible substrate/piezoelectric actuator ?). The overall principle of the technique and the related analytical modelling are described. It is powerful to estimate the magnetostriction coefficient of ferromagnetic thin films and can be used to determine the effe…
We show that applying strain on half-doped manganites makes it possible to tune the system to the proximity of a metal-insulator transition and thereby generate a colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) response. This phase competition not only allows control of CMR in ferromagnetic metallic manganites but can be used to generate CMR response in otherwise robust insulators at half-doping. Further, from our realistic microscopic model of strain and magnetotransport calculations within the Kubo formalism, we demonstrate a striking result of strain engineering that, under tensile strain, a ferromagnetic…
A small fraction of phosphorus (up to 10 %) was incorporated in ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As epilayers grown on a GaAs substrate. P incorporation allows reducing the epitaxial strain or even change its sign, resulting in strong modifications of the magnetic anisotropy. In particular a reorientation of the easy axis toward the growth direction is observed for high P concentration. It offers an interesting alternative to the metamorphic approach, in particular for magnetization reversal experiments where epitaxial defects stongly affect the domain wall propagation.
We investigate different approaches towards a nonvolatile switching of the remanent magnetization in single-crystalline ferromagnets at room temperature via elastic strain using ferromagnetic thin film/piezoelectric actuator hybrids. The piezoelectric actuator induces a voltage-controllable strain along different crystalline directions of the ferromagnetic thin film, resulting in modifications of its magnetization by converse magnetoelastic effects. We quantify the magnetization changes in the hybrids via ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy and superconducting quantum interference device magn…
Fe doping in Ni$_2$Mn$_{1.5}$In$_{0.5}$ results in suppression of the martensitic phase via two contrasting routes. In Ni$_2$Mn$_{1.5-x}$Fe$_{x}$In$_{0.5}$, the martensitic phase is converted to a strain glassy phase, while in Ni$_{2-y}$Fe$_y$Mn$_{1.5}$In$_{0.5}$, a cubic ferromagnetic phase results at the expense of the martensite. Careful studies of magnetic and structural properties reveal the presence of the impurity $γ-$(Fe,Ni) phase as the reason for the emergence of non-ergodic strain glassy phase when Fe is sought to be doped at Y/Z (Mn) sites of X$_2$YZ Heusler alloy. Whereas attempts…
We report on theoretical and experimental investigation of A-site driven ferroelectricity in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 thin films grown on SrTiO3 substrates. Structural analysis and density functional theory calculations show that epitaxial strain stretches the rhombohedral La2NiMnO6 crystal lattice along the [111]cubic direction, triggering a displacement of the A-site La ions in the double perovskite lattice. The lattice distortion and the A-site displacements stabilize a ferroelectric polar state in ferromagnetic La2NiMnO6 crystals. The ferroelectric state only appears in the rhombohedral La2…
The direct magnetoelectric (ME) effect resulting from the polarization changes induced in a ferroelectric film by the application of a magnetic field to a ferromagnetic substrate is described using the nonlinear thermodynamic theory. It is shown that the ME response strongly depends on the initial strain state of the film. The ME polarization coefficient of the heterostructures involving Terfenol-D substrates and compressively strained lead zirconate titanate (PZT) films, which stabilize in the out-of-plane polarization state, is found to be comparable to that of bulk PZT/Terfenol-D laminate c…
The magnetic anisotropy of a FeCuNbSiB (Finemet) film deposited on Kapton has been studied by micro-strip ferromagnetic resonance technique. We have shown that the flexibility of the substrate allows a good transmission of elastic strains generated by a piezoelectric actuator. Following the resonance field angular dependence, we also demonstrate the possibility of controlling the magnetic anisotropy of the film by applying relatively small voltages to the actuator. Moreover, a suitable model taking into account the effective elastic strains measured by digital image correlation and the effecti…
We calculated a spin-polarized conductance in the almost unexplored nanostructure "high temperature ferromagnetic insulator/ graphene/ ferroelectric film" with a special attention to the impact of electric polarization rotation in a strained multiaxial ferroelectric film. The rotation and value of polarization vector are controlled by a misfit strain. We proposed a phenomenological model, which takes into account the shift of the Dirac point due to the proximity of ferromagnetic insulator and uses the Landauer formula for the conductivity of the graphene channel. We derived analytical expressi…
We demonstrate sensitivity of the Mn 3d valence states to strain in the ferromagnetic semiconductors (Ga,Mn)As and (Al,Ga,Mn)As, using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The spectral shape of the Mn $L_{2,3}$ XMCD is dependent on the orientation of the magnetization, and features with cubic and uniaxial dependence are distinguished. Reversing the strain reverses the sign of the uniaxial anisotropy of the Mn $L_3$ pre-peak which is ascribed to transitions from the Mn 2p core level to p-d hybridized valence band hole states. With increasing carrier localization, the $L_3$ pre-peak intensi…
By density functional theory calculations, we predict a stable two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic semiconductor Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Se$_6$, where the Curie temperature $T$$_c$ can be dramatically enhanced beyond room temperature by applying a few percent strain. In addition, the anomalous Hall conductivity in 2D Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Se$_6$ and Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$ is predicted to be comparable to that in ferromagnetic metals of Fe and Ni, and is an order of magnitude larger than that in diluted magnetic semiconductor Ga(Mn,As). Based on superexchange interactions, the enhanced $T$$_c$ in 2D Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Se$_6$ by…
Inertial magnetization dynamics have been predicted at ultrahigh speeds, or frequencies approaching the energy relaxation scale of electrons, in ferromagnetic metals. Here we identify inertial terms to magnetization dynamics in thin Ni$_{79}$Fe$_{21}$ and Co films near room temperature. Effective magnetic fields measured in high-frequency ferromagnetic resonance (115-345 GHz) show an additional stiffening term which is quadratic in frequency and $\sim$ 80 mT at the high frequency limit of our experiment. Our results extend understanding of magnetization dynamics at sub-picosecond time scales.
The interaction between strain and spin has received intensive attention in the scientific community due to its abundant physical phenomena and huge technological impact. Until now, there is no experimental report on ultra-high frequency magnetic resonance through the strain-spin coupling for any technologically relevant perpendicular magnetic material. Here we report the experimental detection of the acoustic strain waves that have a response time on the order of 10 picoseconds in perpendicular magnetic [Co/Pd]n multilayers via a femtosecond laser pulse excitation. Through direct measurements…
Bulk magnetization in Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_3 thin films with tensile (SrTiO_3) and compressive (LaAlO_3) substrate-induced strain is compared to the magnetooptical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements. In the absence of an external magnetic field, in both films, a stable ferromagnetic insulating majority phase coexists with an antiferromagnetic insulating phase below ~120K. MOKE measurements indicate that at 5K a metastable ferromagnetic metallic (FM) phase is formed at the surface of the stretched film in a magnetic field below 1.1T already, while in the bulk the FM phase starts to form in the fiel…
Using density functional theory calculations we establish the hitherto unknown compound CrCTe$_3$ to be a stable anti-ferromagnetic semiconductor in the R$\bar{3}$ crystal structure with an indirect fundamental gap . Successive layers in the bulk compound are weakly bound by van der Waals forces so that individual layers can be easily exfoliated. A monolayer of CrCTe$_3$ is also an anti-ferromagnetic semiconductor. The monolayer is structurally stable over a large range of compressive and tensile strains, and the anti-ferromagnetic state is robust over this strain range. Band gap of the monola…
We report a femtosecond response in photoinduced magnetization rotation in the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs, which allows for detection of a four-state magnetic memory at the femtosecond time scale. The temporal profile of this cooperative magnetization rotation exhibits a discontinuity that reveals two distinct temporal regimes, marked by the transition from a highly non-equilibrium, carrier-mediated regime within the first 200 fs, to a thermal, lattice-heating picosecond regime.
We report on the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of a monolayer of GdAg2, forming a moiré pattern on Ag(111). Combining scanning tunneling microscopy and ab-initio spin-polarized calculations, we show that the electronic band structure can be shifted linearly via thermal dependent strain of the intra-layer atomic distance in a range between 1-7%, leading to lateral hetero-structuring. Furthermore, the coupling of the incommensurable GdAg2 alloy layer to the Ag(111) substrate leads to spatially varying atomic relaxation causing subsurface layer buckling, texturing of the electron…
The modification of single layer graphene due to intense, picoseconds near-infrared laser pulses is investigated. We monitor the stable changes introduced to graphene upon photoexcitation using Raman spectroscopy. We find that photoexcitation leads to both a local increase in hole doping and a reduction in compressive strain. Possible explanations for these effects, due to photo-induced oxygenation and photo-induced buckling of the graphene, are discussed.
In this paper we have created a strain driven single crystal like ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state in a PLD grown thin film of low doped LCMO(X = 0.15)on NGO(100) substrate and make a thorough study of strain effects on the electric and magnetic transport of this film. We have studied and compared the FMI state, ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC), ferromagnetic insulating temperature (TFMI) and the resistivity of the film in details with bulk single crystals of X=0.18 to 0.22 doping region. We have found that TFMI and the localisation length of the carriers are increased and there i…
We report on a systematic study of strain effects on the transport properties and the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{c}$ of high-quality La$_{0.9}$Sr$_{0.1}$MnO$_{3}$ thin films epitaxially grown on (100) SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates. Both the magnetization and the resistivity are critically dependent on the film thickness. $T_{c}$ is enhanced with decreasing the film thickness due to the compressive stain produced by lattice mismatch. The resistivity above 165 K of the films with various thicknesses is consistent with small polaronic hopping conductivity. The polaronic formation energy $E…
We investigate the effect of an applied uniaxial strain on the ferromagnetic instability due to long- range Coulomb interaction between Dirac fermions in graphene. In case of undeformed graphene the ferromagnetic exchange instability occurs at sufficiently strong interaction within the Hartree- Fock approximation. In this work we show that using the same theoretical framework but with an additional applied uniaxial strain, the transition can occur for much weaker interaction, within the range in suspended graphene. We also study the consequence of strain on the formation of localized magnetic …
Using first-principles calculations, we investigated the magnetic, electronic, and structural properties of oxygen-substituted NaMnF3 (NaMnF1.5O1.5) with in-plane biaxial strain. For simplicity, a structure containing an oxygen octahedron is used to explore the underlying physical mechanism. We found that the oxygen octahedron induces a transition from an insulating antiferromagnet to a high-temperature half-metallic ferromagnet. More importantly, the Curie temperature can be significantly enhanced and even might reach room temperature by applying tensile strain. The changing trends of exchang…
With local density approximation + Hubbard $U$ (LDA+$U$) calculations, we show that the ferromagnetic (FM) insulating state observed in tensile-strained LaCoO$_3$ epitaxial thin films is most likely a mixture of low-spin (LS) and high-spin (HS) Co, namely, a HS/LS mixture state. Compared with other FM states, including the intermediate-spin (IS) state (\textit{metallic} within LDA+$U$), which consists of IS Co only, and the insulating IS/LS mixture state, the HS/LS state is the most favorable one. The FM order in HS/LS state is stabilized via the superexchange interactions between adjacent LS …
Transition metal dichalcogenides are promising candidates to show long-range ferromagnetic order in the single-layer limit. Based on ab initio calculations, we report the emergence of a charge density wave (CDW) phase in monolayer 1T-CrTe$_2$. We demonstrate that this phase is the ground state in the single-layer limit at any strain value. We obtain an optical phonon mode of $1.96$ THz that connects CDW phase with the undistorted 1T phase. Localization of the $a_{1g}$ orbital of CrTe$_2$ produces an out-of-plane orientation of the magnetic moments, circumventing the restrictions of the Mermin-…
We investigate the effect of strain and film thickness on the orbital and magnetic properties of LaSrCrO$_3$ (LSCO)/LaSrMnO$_3$ (LSMO) heterostructures using bulk magnetometry, soft X-ray magnetic spectroscopy, first-principles density functional theory, high-resolution electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. We observe an anti-parallel ordering of the magnetic moments between the ferromagnetic LSMO layers and the LSCO spacers leading to a strain-independent ferromagnetic ground state of the LSCO/LSMO heterostructures for LSMO layers as thin as 2 unit cells. As the LSMO thickness is increas…
It has been well established that both in bulk at ambient pressure and for films under modest strains, cubic SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ ($δ< 0.2$) is a ferromagnetic metal. Recent theoretical work, however, indicates that a magnetic phase transition to an antiferromagnetic structure could occur under large strain accompanied by a metal-insulator transition. We have observed a strain-induced ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic phase transition in SrCoO$_{3-δ}$ films grown on DyScO$_3$ substrates, which provide a large tensile epitaxial strain, as compared to ferromagnetic films under lower tensile strain on …
A monolayer of CrI$_3$ is a two-dimensional crystal that in its equilibrium configuration is a ferromagnetic semiconductor, however, two coupled layers can be ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic depending on the stacking. We study the magnetic phase diagram upon the strain of the antiferromagnetically coupled bilayer with C2/m symmetry. We found that strain may be an efficient tool to tune the magnetic phase of the structure. A tensile strain stabilizes the antiferromagnetic phase, while a compressive strain turns the system ferromagnetic. We understood that behavior by looking at the relative …
The stoichiometric Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{25}$In$_{25}$ Heusler alloy transforms from a stable ferromagnetic austenitic ground state to an incommensurate modulated martensitic ground state with a progressive replacement of In with Mn without any pre-transition phases. The absence of pre-transition phases like strain glass in Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{25+x}$In$_{25-x}$ alloys is explained to be the ability of the ferromagnetic cubic structure to accommodate the lattice strain caused by atomic size differences of In and Mn atoms. Beyond the critical value of $x$ = 8.75, the alloys undergo martensitic transformation …
It is important to spintronics to achieve fully-spin-polarized magnetic materials that are stable and can be easily fabricated. Here, through systematical density-functional-theory investigations, we achieve high and even full spin polarization for carriers in the ground-state phase of CrTe by applying tensile biaxial stress. The resulting strain is tensile in the xy plane and compressive in the z axis. With the in-plane tensile strain increasing, the ferromagnetic order is stable against antiferromagnetic fluctuations, and a half-metallic ferromagnetism is achieved at an in-plane strain of 4.…
Artificially engineered superlattices were designed and fabricated to induce different growth mechanisms and structural characteristics. DC sputtering was used to grow ferromagnetic (La$_{0.8}$Ba$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$) / ferroelectric (Ba$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$TiO$_3$ or BaTiO$_3$) superlattices. We systematically modified the thickness of the ferromagnetic layer to analyze dimensional and structural effects on the superlattices with different structural characteristics. The crystalline structure was characterized by X-Ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The magnetic and electronic pro…
We study the temperature dependence of strain under constant magnetic-fields in Ni-Mn based ferromagnetic Heusler alloys in the form Ni-Mn-$X$ ($X$: Ga, In, Sn, Sb) which undergo a martensitic transformation. We discuss the influence of the applied magnetic-field on the nucleation of ferromagnetic martensite and extract information on the easy-axis of magnetization in the martensitic state.
In spintronics, one of the long standing questions is why the MgO-based magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) is almost the only option to achieve a large tunnelling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio at room temperature (RT) but not as large as the theoretical prediction. This study focuses on the development of an almost strain-free MTJ using metastable bcc CoxMn100-x ferromagnetic films. We have investigated the degree of crystallisation in MTJ consisting of CoxMn100-x/MgO/CoxMn100-x (x = 66, 75, 83 and 86) in relation to their TMR ratios. Cross-sectional high resolution transmission electron microscop…
Oriented, single phase thin films of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} have been deposited onto (100)-oriented LaAlO_{3} (0.1<x<0.5) substrates using the Pulsed Laser Deposition technique. While for some compositions the physical properties (transport and magnetization) of the as-grown films are higher than the bulk values, for other calcium contents the optimized properties are obtained only after annealing under oxygen. These data can be partly explained by changes in oxygen content, resulting in cationic vacancies and thus self-doping effects - accompanying structural changes, may be the cause of prope…
We investigate coherent phonon propagation in a thin film of ferroelectric PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) by ultrafast x-ray diffraction (UXRD) experiments, which are analyzed as time-resolved reciprocal space mapping (RSM) in order to observe the in- and out-of-plane structural dynamics simultaneously. The mosaic structure of the PZT leads to a coupling of the excited out-of-plane expansion to in-plane lattice dynamics on a picosecond timescale, which is not observed for out-of-plane compression.
Above-bandgap femtosecond optical excitation of a ferroelectric/dielectric BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattice leads to structural responses that are a consequence of the screening of the strong electrostatic coupling between the component layers. Time-resolved x-ray free-electron laser diffraction shows that the structural response to optical excitation includes a net lattice expansion of the superlattice consistent with depolarization-field screening driven by the photoexcited charge carriers. The depolarization-field-screening-driven expansion is separate from a photoacoustic pulse launched from the…
At ambient pressure, bulk SrCoO$_{3}$ is a ferromagnetic (FM) metal in cubic perovskite structure. By contrast, magnetic properties of epitaxial SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films, especially at high tensile strain ($\varepsilon \gtrsim 3$\%), remain unclear: Previous calculations had predicted antiferromagnetic (AFM) states more energetically favorable in this regime, but recent experiments indicated a FM insulating state. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we perform an extensive search for the structural, spin, magnetic, and orbital states of SrCoO$_{3}$ thin films. Our calculations ind…
The alpha-beta magneto-structural phase transition in MnAs/GaAs(111) epilayers is investigated by elastic neutron scattering. The in-plane parameter of MnAs remains almost constant with temperature from 100 K to 420 K, following the thermal evolution of the GaAs substrate. This induces a temperature dependent biaxial strain that is responsible for an alpha-beta phase coexistence and, more important, for the stabilization of the ferromagnetic alpha-phase at higher temperature than in bulk. We explain the premature appearance of the beta-phase at 275 K and the persistence of the ferromagnetic al…
Ferromagnetic insulators play a crucial role in the development of low-dissipation quantum magnetic devices for spintronics. Epitaxial LaCoO3 thin film is a prominent ferromagnetic insulator, in which the robust ferromagnetic ordering emerges owing to epitaxial strain. Whereas it is evident that strong spin-lattice coupling induces ferromagnetism, the reported ferromagnetic properties of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films were highly consistent. For example, even under largely modulated degree of strain, the reported Curie temperatures of epitaxially strained LaCoO3 thin films lie within 8…
We investigate the influence of a well-defined reversible biaxial strain <=0.12 % on the magnetization (M) of epitaxial ferromagnetic manganite films. M has been recorded depending on temperature, strain and magnetic field in 20 - 50 nm thick films. This is accomplished by reversibly compressing the isotropic in-plane lattice parameter of the rhombohedral piezoelectric 0.72PMN-0.28PT (001) substrates by application of an electric field E <= 12 kV cm-1. The magnitude of the total variable in-plane strain has been derived. Strain-induced shifts of the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) of up t…
We study how strain affects orbital ordering and magnetism at the interface between SrMnO$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$ from density-functional calculations and interpret the basic results in terms of a three-site Mn-O-Mn model. Magnetic interaction between the Mn atoms is governed by a competition between the antiferromagnetic superexchange of the Mn t$_{2g}$ core spins and the ferromagnetic double exchange of the itinerant e$_g$ electrons. While the core electrons are relatively unaffected by the strain, the orbital character of the itinerant electron is strongly affected, which in turn causes a large c…
Multiferroics with the coexistence of ferroelectric and ferromagnetic orders are ideal candidates for magnetoelectric applications. Unfortunately, only very few ferroelectric-ferromagnetic multiferroics (with low magnetic critical temperature) were discovered. Here we perform first principles calculations to investigate the effects of the epitaxial strain on the properties of BiMnO3 films grown along the pseudocubic [001] direction. Unlike the ground state with the centrosymmetric C2/c space group in bulk, we reveal that the tensile epitaxial strain stabilizes the ferromagnetic and ferroelectr…
