Quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse picosecond strain pulses injected into a ferromagnetic (311) (Ga,Mn)As film induce dynamical shear strain in the film, thereby modulating the magnetic anisotropy and inducing resonant precession of the magnetization at a frequency ~10 GHz. The modulation of the out-of-plane magnetization component by the quasitransverse strain reaches amplitudes as large as 10% of the equilibrium magnetization. Our theoretical analysis is in good agreement with the observed results, thus providing a strategy for ultrafast magnetization control in ferromagnetic films by strain pulses.
The effect of picosecond acoustic strain pulses (ps-ASP) on a thin layer of (Ga,Mn)As co-doped with phosphorus was probed using magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE). A transient MOKE signal followed by low amplitude oscillations was evidenced, with a strong dependence on applied magnetic field, temperature and ps-ASP amplitude. Careful interferometric measurement of the layer's thickness variation induced by the ps-ASP allowed us to model very accurately the resulting signal, and interpret it as the strain modulated reflectivity (differing for $σ_{\pm}$ probe polarizations), independently from d…
We study the transport of spin polarized electrons in n-GaAs using spatially resolved continuous wave Faraday rotation. From the measured steady state distribution, we determine spin relaxation times under drift conditions and, in the presence of strain, the induced spin splitting from the observed spin precession. Controlled variation of strain along [110] allows us to deduce the deformation potential causing this effect, while strain along [100] has no effect. The electric field dependence of the spin lifetime is explained quantitatively in terms of an increase of the electron temperature.
We demonstrate selective excitation of a spin wave mode in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As film by picosecond strain pulses. For a certain range of magnetic fields applied in the layer plane only a single frequency is detected for the magnetization precession. We explain this selectivity of spin mode excitation by the necessity of spatial matching of magnon and phonon eigenfunctions, which represents a selection rule analogous to momentum conservation for magnon-phonon interaction in bulk ferromagnetic materials.
An internal anisotropy pulse field is launched by an 8.3 ps short laser excitation, which triggers precessional magnetization dynamics of a polycrystalline NiFe/FeMn exchange bias system on the picosecond timescale. Due to the excitation the unidirectional anisotropy and, thus, the exchange coupling across the interface between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layer is reduced, leading to a fast reduction of the exchange bias field and to a dramatic increase of the zero-field susceptibility. The fast optical unpinning is followed by a slower recovery of the interfacial exchange coup…

Coherent phonons (CP) generated by laser pulses on the femtosecond scale have been proposed as a means to achieve ultrafast, non-thermal switching in phase-change materials such as Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$(GST). Here we use ultrafast optical pump pulses to induce coherent acoustic phonons and stroboscopically measure the corresponding lattice distortions in GST using 100 ps x-ray pulses from the ESRF storage ring. A linear-chain model provides a good description of the observed changes in the diffraction signal, however, the magnitudes of the measured shifts are too large to be explained by th…
Very short and well shaped magnetic field pulses can be generated using ultra-relativistic electron bunches at Stanford Linear Accelerator. These fields of several Tesla with duration of several picoseconds are used to study the response of magnetic materials to a very short excitation. Precession of a magnetic moment by 90 degrees in a field of 1 Tesla takes about 10 picoseconds, so we explore the range of fast switching of the magnetization by precession.
Using femtosecond optical pulses, we have investigated the ultrafast magnetization dynamics induced in a dielectric film of bismuth-substituted yttrium iron garnet (Bi-YIG) buried below a thick Cu/Pt metallic bilayer. We show that exciting the sample from Pt surface launches an acoustic strain pulse propagating into the garnet film. We discovered that this strain pulse induces a coherent magnetization precession in the Bi-YIG at the frequency of the ferromagnetic resonance. The observed phenomena can be explain by strain-induced changes of magnetocristalline anisotropy via the inverse magnetos…
By means of a metal opto-acoustic transducer we generate quasi-longitudinal and quasi-transverse picosecond strain pulses in a (311)-GaAs substrate and monitor their propagation by picosecond acoustic interferometry. By probing at the sample side opposite to the transducer the signals related to the compressive and shear strain pulses can be separated in time. In addition to conventional monitoring of the reflected probe light intensity we monitor also the polarization rotation of the optical probe beam. This polarimetric technique results in improved sensitivity of detection and provides comp…
We report an all-optical time-domain detection of picosecond magnetization dynamics of arrays of 50 nm Ni80Fe20 (permalloy) dots down to the single nanodot regime. In the single nanodot regime the dynamics reveals one dominant resonant mode corresponding to the edge mode of the 50 nm dot with slightly higher damping than that of the unpatterned thin film. With the increase in areal density of the array both the precession frequency and damping increases significantly due to the increase in magnetostatic interactions between the nanodots and a mode splitting and sudden jump in apparent damping …

In Situ Nanometer-Resolution Strain and Orientation Mapping for Gas-Solid Reactions via Precession-Assisted Four-dimensional Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy
Detailed understanding of spin dynamics in magnetic nanomaterials is necessary for developing ultrafast, low-energy and high-density spintronic logic and memory. Here, we develop micromagnetic models and analytical solutions to elucidate the effect of increasing damping and uniaxial anisotropy on magnetic field pulse-assisted switching time, energy and field requirements of nanowires with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy and yttrium iron garnet-like spin transport properties. A nanowire is initially magnetized using an external magnetic field pulse (write) and self-relaxation. Next, magnetic …
Calcium cobaltite thin films with a ratio Ca/Co=1 were grown on (101)-NdGaO3 substrate by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The structure of the deposited metastable phase is solved using a precession electron diffraction 3D dataset recorded from a cross-sectional sample. It is shown that an ordered oxygen-deficient Ca2Co2O5+d perovskite of the brownmillerite-type with lattice parameters a= 0.546nm, b=1.488nm and c=0.546nm (SG: Ibm2) has been stabilized using the substrate induced strain. The structure and microstructure of this metastable cobaltite is further discussed and compared to re…
The modification of single layer graphene due to intense, picoseconds near-infrared laser pulses is investigated. We monitor the stable changes introduced to graphene upon photoexcitation using Raman spectroscopy. We find that photoexcitation leads to both a local increase in hole doping and a reduction in compressive strain. Possible explanations for these effects, due to photo-induced oxygenation and photo-induced buckling of the graphene, are discussed.
Measuring local magnetization dynamics and its spatial variation is essential for advancements in spintronics and relevant applications. Here we demonstrate a phase-sensitive imaging technique for studying patterned magnetic structures based on picosecond laser heating. With the time-resolved anomalous Nernst effect (TRANE) and extensions, we simultaneously image the dynamic magnetization and RF driving current density. The stroboscopic detection implemented in TRANE microscopy provides access to both amplitude and phase information of ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and RF current. Using this a…
The rate and pathways of relaxation of a magnetic medium to its equilibrium following excitation with intense and short laser pulses are the key ingredients of ultrafast optical control of spins. Here we study experimentally the evolution of the magnetization and magnetic anisotropy of thin films of a ferromagnetic metal galfenol (Fe$_{0.81}$Ga$_{0.19}$) resulting from excitation with a femtosecond laser pulse. From the temporal evolution of the hysteresis loops we deduce that the magnetization $M_S$ and magnetic anisotropy parameters $K$ recover within a nanosecond, and the ratio between $K$ …
We investigate coherent phonon propagation in a thin film of ferroelectric PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 (PZT) by ultrafast x-ray diffraction (UXRD) experiments, which are analyzed as time-resolved reciprocal space mapping (RSM) in order to observe the in- and out-of-plane structural dynamics simultaneously. The mosaic structure of the PZT leads to a coupling of the excited out-of-plane expansion to in-plane lattice dynamics on a picosecond timescale, which is not observed for out-of-plane compression.
Above-bandgap femtosecond optical excitation of a ferroelectric/dielectric BaTiO3/CaTiO3 superlattice leads to structural responses that are a consequence of the screening of the strong electrostatic coupling between the component layers. Time-resolved x-ray free-electron laser diffraction shows that the structural response to optical excitation includes a net lattice expansion of the superlattice consistent with depolarization-field screening driven by the photoexcited charge carriers. The depolarization-field-screening-driven expansion is separate from a photoacoustic pulse launched from the…
Despite of the tremendous efforts spent on the oxygen vacancy migration in determining the property optimization of oxygen-vacancy enrichment transition metal oxides, few has focused on their dynamic behaviors non-equilibrium states. In this work, we performed multi-timescale ultrafast X-ray diffraction measurements by using picosecond synchrotron X-ray pulses and femtosecond table-top X-ray pulses to monitor the structural dynamics in the oxygen-vacancy ordered SrCoO2.5 thin films. A giant photoinduced strain (Δc/c > 1%) was observed, whose distinct correlation with the pump photon energy ind…
We present strong evidences for the deterministic role of magnetoelasticity in ultrafast spin dynamics of ferromagnetic NixFe100-x alloy films. Without a change in the crystal structure, we observed sudden Pi-phase inversion of the spin precession in the range of x = 87.0 - 97.5. In addition, it was found that the phase was continuously changed and reversed its sign by varying the pump fluence. These cannot be explained simply by temperature dependence of magnetocrystalline, demagnetizing, and Zeeman fields which have been conventionally considered so far in describing the spin dynamics. Throu…
Enabling the light-control of complex systems on ultra-short timescales gives rise to rich physics with promising applications. While crucial, the quantitative determination of both the longitudinal and shear photo-induced strains still remains challenging. Here, by scrutinizing asymmetric Bragg peaks pairs $(\pm h01)$ using picosecond time-resolved X-ray diffraction experiments in BiFeO$_3$, we simultaneously determine the longitudinal and shear strains. The relative amplitude of those strains can be explained only if both thermal and non-thermal processes contribute to the acoustic phonon ph…
We explore a thermal mechanism of changing the anisotropy by femtosecond laser pulses in dielectric ferrimagnetic garnets by taking a low symmetry (YBiPrLu)3(FeGa)5O12 film grown on the (210)-oriented Gd3Ga5O12 substrate as a model media. We demonstrate by means of spectral magneto-optical pump-probe technique and phenomenological analysis, that the magnetization precession in such a film is triggered by laser-induced changes of the growth-induced magnetic anisotropy along with the well-known ultrafast inverse Faraday effect. The change of magnetic anisotropy is mediated by the lattice heating…
Electric-field control of magnetism without electric currents potentially revolutionizes spintronics towards ultralow power. Here by using mechanically coupled phase field simulations, we computationally demonstrate the application of the strain-mediated magnetoelectric effect for the electric-field control of magnetic states in heterostructure. In the model heterostructure constituted of the soft nanomagnet Co and the piezoelectric substrate PMN-PT, both the volatility of magnetic states and the magnetization switching dynamics excited by the electric field are explored. It is found that an e…

Using $\approx$40 fs ultrashort laser pulses, we investigate the picosecond acoustic response from a prototypical phase change material, thin Ge$_{2}$Sb$_{2}$Te$_{5}$ (GST) films with various thicknesses. After excitation with a 1.53 eV-energy pulse with a fluence of $\approx$ 5 mJ/cm$^{2}$, the time-resolved reflectivity change exhibits transient electronic response, followed by a combination of exponential-like strain and coherent acoustic phonons in the gigahertz (GHz) frequency range. The time-domain shape of the coherent acoustic pulse is well reproduced by the use of the strain model by …
It is shown theoretically that a single a few picoseconds long acoustic pulse can reverse magnetization in a magneto-strictive material Terfenol-D. Following giant magneto-elastic changes of free energy density the magnetization vector is kicked out of a local in-plane energy mininum and decays into another minimum. For acoustic pulse duration significantly shorter than magnetization precession period $τ_{ac}$<<$T_{prec}$, the switching threshold is determined by the {\it acoustic pulse area}, i.e. pulse integral in time domain, similar to coherent phenomena in optics. Simulation results are s…
The time resolved Magnetooptical Kerr effect in the substrate-strain-induced insulating ferromagnetic phase in (Pr$_{0.6}$Ca$_{0.4}$)MnO$_3$ thin films on two different substrates was measured in a magnetic field up to 1.1T. The photoinduced Kerr rotation and ellipticity show remarkably different magnetic-field dependence. From the comparison of the magnetic field dependencies of the photoinduced and static Kerr rotation and ellipticity we conclude that a transient ferromagnetic metallic phase, embedded within the insulating ferromagnetic phase, is created upon the photoexcitation at low tempe…
Interdigitated transducers were used to generate and detect surface acoustic waves on a thin layer of (Ga,Mn)(As,P). The out-of-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy of this dilute magnetic semiconductor is very sensitive to the strain of the layer, making it an ideal test material for the dynamic control of magnetization via magneto-striction. The time-domain measurement of the amplitude and phase of the transmitted SAW during magnetic field sweeps indicated a clear resonant behavior at a field close to the one calculated to give a precession frequency equal to the SAW frequency. A resonance was…
We investigate generation of exchange magnons by ultrashort, picosecond acoustic pulses propagating through ferromagnetic thin films. Using the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations we derive the dispersion relation for exchange magnons for an external magnetic field tilted with respect to the film normal. Decomposing the solution in a series of standing spin wave modes, we derive a system of ordinary differential equations and driven harmonic oscillator equations describing the dynamics of individual magnon mode. The external magnetoelastic driving force is given by the time-dependent spatial Fou…
