A comprehensive comparison between the magnetic field- and temperature-dependent low frequency spin dynamics in the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain (AFHC) system copper pyrazine dinitrate, probed via the 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate 1/T1, and the field theoretical approach in the Luttinger liquid (LL) regime has been performed. We have found a very good agreement between the experiment and theory in the investigated temperature and field range. Our results demonstrate how strongly the quantum critical point affects the spin dynamics of Heisenberg spin chain compounds.
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of the 29Si spin-lattice relaxation time T1 were used to probe the spin-1/2 random Heisenberg chain compound BaCu2(Si(1-x)Gex)2O7. Remarkable differences between the pure (x = 0) and the fully random (x = 0.5) case are observed, indicating that randomness generates a distribution of local magnetic relaxations. This distribution, which is reflected in a stretched exponential NMR relaxation, exhibits a progressive broadening with decreasing temperature, caused by a growing inequivalence of magnetic sites. Compelling independent evidence for the influ…
We present an extensive NMR study of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladder Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4 in a magnetic field range 4.5 - 16.7 T. By measuring the proton NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 and varying the magnetic field around the critical field H_c1 = Delta / gμ_B = 7.5 T, we have studied the transition from a gapped spin liquid ground state to a gapless magnetic regime which can be described as a Luttinger liquid. We identify an intermediate regime T > |H-H_c1|, where the spin dynamics is (possibly) only controlled by the T=0 critical point H_c1.
We consider the isotropic $S=1$ Heisenberg chain with a finite Haldane gap $Δ$ and use state-of-the-art numerical techniques to investigate its dynamical properties at finite temperature, focusing on the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments for instance. In particular, we analyze the contributions from modes with momenta close to $q\approx 0$ and $q\approx π$ as a function of temperature. At high-temperature, we observe spin diffusion with a non-trivial exponent. At low-temperature, we argue that a simple activated behavior $1/T_…
We report $^{133}$Cs nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on the 2D frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ down to 2 K and up to 15 T. We show that $^{133}$Cs NMR is a good probe of the magnetic degrees of freedom in this material. Cu spin degrees of freedom are sensed through a strong anisotropic hyperfine coupling. The spin excitation gap opens above the critical saturation field. The gap value was determined from the activation energy of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate in a magnetic field applied parallel to the Cu chains (b axis). The values of the g-factor …
We used 17O NMR to probe the uniform (wavevector q=0) electron spin excitations up to 800 K in Sr2CuO3 and separate the q=0 from the q=\pmπ/a staggered components. Our results support the logarithmic decrease of the uniform spin susceptibility below T ~ 0.015J, where J=2200 K. From measurement of the dynamical spin susceptibility for q=0 by the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_{1}, we demonstrate that the q=0 mode of spin transport is ballistic at the T=0 limit, but has a diffusion-like contribution at finite temperatures even for T << J.
The proton hyperfine shift K and NMR relaxation rate $1/T_1$ have been measured as a function of temperature in the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4. The presence of a spin gap $Δ\simeq J_\perp-J_\parallel$ in this strongly coupled ladder ($J_\parallel < J_\perp$) is supported by the K and $1/T_1$ results. By comparing $1/T_1$ at two different proton sites, we infer the evolution of the spectral functions $S_z(q,ω_n)$ and $S_\perp(q,ω_n)$. When the gap is significantly reduced by the magnetic field, two different channels of nuclear relaxation, specific to gapped anti…
We present a 13C-NMR study of the magnetic field driven transition to complete polarization of the S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system copper pyrazine dinitrate Cu(C_4H_4N_2)(NO_3)_2 (CuPzN). The static local magnetization as well as the low-frequency spin dynamics, probed via the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1, were explored from the low to the high field limit and at temperatures from the quantum regime (k_B T << J) up to the classical regime (k_B T >> J). The experimental data show very good agreement with quantum Monte Carlo calculations over the complete range of p…
The response of an open spin chain with isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions to a uniform magnetic field is studied by classical Monte Carlo simulations. It is observed how the induced on-site magnetization is non uniform, due to the occurrence of edge staggered terms which decay exponentially over a distance equal to the zero field correlation length of the infinite chain. The total magnetic moment associated to each staggered term is found to be about half of the original single-spin magnitude and to decrease as the inverse of temperature (i.e. to behave as a Curie-like moment). The nume…
We report 7Li NMR studies of single crystals of triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet Li7RuO6. Slow critical divergence with a wide critical region of |T/TN - 1|< 7 was observed in 7Li nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. The slowing down of staggered spin fluctuations was analyzed in a renormalized classical region of a two-dimensional triangular-lattice non-linear sigma model. A spin stiffness constant was found to reduce to about 20 % from the value in a spin-wave approximation. The effect of spin frustration, e.g., Z2 vortex excitations on the critical phenomena is suggested.
The magnetic properties of Na2CuP2O7 were investigated by means of 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements. We report the 31P NMR shift, the spin-lattice 1/T1, and spin-spin 1/T2 relaxation-rate data as a function of temperature T. The temperature dependence of the NMR shift K(T) is well described by the S=1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnetic (HAF) model with an intraplanar exchange of J/k_B \simeq 18\pm2 K and a hyperfine coupling A = (3533\pm185) Oe/mu_B. The 31P NMR spectrum was found to broaden abruptly below T \sim 10 K sign…
We report magnetization, specific heat, muon spin rotation and Na NMR measurements on the S=3/2 rhombohedrally stacked Heisenberg antiferromagnet NaCrO2. This compound appears to be an ideal candidate for the study of triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnets with very weak interlayer coupling. While specific heat and magnetization measurements indicate the occurrence of a transition in the range 40-46 K, both muon spin rotation and NMR reveal a fluctuating regime extending well below T_c, with a peak of relaxation rate 1/T1 around 30 K. This novel finding is discussed within the context of excit…
We obtain the logarithmic corrections to the dynamic response function and NMR T_1 and T_{2G} rates in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain using perturbative renormalization group in the leading irrelevant operator. The result is compared with NMR experiments in Sr_2CuO_3.
The spin-nematic phase is an intriguing state of matter that lacks usual long-range dipolar order, yet it exhibits higher multipolar order. This makes its detection extremely difficult and controversial. Recently, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been proposed as one of the most suitable techniques to confirm its existence. We report a $^{17}$O NMR observation of the reduction of the local magnetization in the polarized state of the frustrated spin-1/2 chain $β$-TeVO$_4$, which was previously proposed to be a fingerprint of the spin-nematic behavior. However, our detailed study shows that …
We compute the magnetic profile of spin Peierls solitons in a simple Heisenberg model with magneto elastic couplings, using independently the DMRG method and the Hartree Fock approximation. Our results agree qualitatively with published NMR data provided we average over the spin profiles. We conclude that he dynamics of the spin plus lattice system must be included in a more detailed theory of the spin Peierls transition in CuGeO.
Kagome lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnets are known to be highly sensitive to perturbations caused by structural disorder. NMR is a local probe ideally suited for investigating such disorder-induced effects, but in practice large distributions in the conventional one-dimensional NMR data make it difficult to distinguish the intrinsic behavior expected for pristine kagome quantum spin liquids from disorder induced effects. Here we report the development of a two-dimensional NMR data acquisition scheme applied to Zn-barlowite (Zn$_{0.95}$Cu$_{0.05}$)Cu$_{3}$(OD)$_{6}$FBr kagome lattice, and suc…
We report $^{35}$Cl NMR, ESR, $μ$SR and specific heat measurements on the $S=1/2$ frustrated kagomé magnet kapellasite, $α-$Cu$_3$Zn(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, where a gapless spin liquid phase is stabilized by a set of competing exchange interactions. Our measurements confirm the ferromagnetic character of the nearest-neighbour exchange interaction $J_1$ and give an energy scale for the competing interactions $|J| \sim 10$ K. The study of the temperature-dependent ESR lineshift reveals a moderate symmetric exchange anisotropy term $D$, with $|D/J|\sim 3$%. These findings validate a posteriori the use of …
muSR and 7Li NMR relaxation measurements in frustrated two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice are presented. It is found that both in Li2VOSiO4 and Li2VOGeO4, spin dynamics at frequencies well below the Heisenberg exchange frequency are present. These dynamics are associated with the motions of walls separating coexisting collinear domains with a magnetic wave vector rotated by 90 degrees.
We report our NMR study of the spin excitations in the quasi-one dimensional (1D) $S=1/2$ quantum magnet CH$_3$NH$_3$Cu(HCOO)$_3$ lying in the 1D-3D dimensional crossover regime with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya(DM) interactions. Above $T_N$, the spinon excitation is observed from the constant $1/T_1$ at low temperatures contributed from the staggered spin susceptibility. At low temperatures well below $T_N$, the $1/T_1$ begins to flatten out under weak magnetic fields. With the increasing field intensity, $1/T_1$ tends to show a power-law temperature dependence gradually, with the index increasing f…
In this letter, I develop a new topologically invariant coherent state path integral for spin systems, and apply it to the quantum Heisenberg model on a square lattice. As a result, the quantum nonlinear $σ$ model for arbitrary values of spin can be directly obtained. The effective coupling constant and spin wave velocity are modified by $g_s= {2\over S}\sqrt{d+{T_Λ\over 2SJ}}$ and $c_s=2JSa \sqrt{d+{T_Λ\over 2SJ}}$, where $T_Λ$ is a natural temperature scale for the reliability of the theory. The formulation can also be extended to other generalized coherent state path integrals.
A group symmetry analysis of the low lying levels of the spin-1/2 kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet is performed for small samples up to N=27. This approach allows to follow the effect of quantum fluctuations when the sample size increases. The results contradict the scenario of ``order by disorder'' which has been advanced on the basis of large S calculations. A large enough second neighbor ferromagnetic exchange coupling is needed to stabilize the $\sqrt 3 \times \sqrt 3$ pattern: the finite size analysis indicates a quantum critical transition at a non zero coupling.
A study of an impurity driven phase-transition into a magnetically ordered state in the spin-liquid Haldane chain compound PbNi2V2O8 is presented. Both, macroscopic magnetization as well as 51V nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements reveal that the spin nature of dopants has a crucial role in determining the stability of the induced long-range magnetic order. In the case of nonmagnetic (Mg2+) doping on Ni2+ spin sites (S=1) a metamagnetic transition is observed in relatively low magnetic fields. On the other hand, the magnetic order in magnetically (Co2+) doped compounds survives at muc…
We present a Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) study of the ground-state properties of spin-1/2 frustrated $J_1-J_3$ Heisenberg $n_l$-leg ladders (with $n_l$ up to 8). For strong frustration ($J_3/J_1\simeq 0.5$), both even- and odd-leg ladders display a finite gap to spin excitations, which we argue remains finite in the two-dimensional limit. In this regime, on odd-leg ladders the ground state is spontaneously dimerized, in agreement with the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis prediction, while on even-leg ladders the dimer correlations decay exponentially. The magnitude of the dimer order parame…
The stability of the disordered ground state of the classical Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet is studied within extensive Monte Carlo simulations by introducing an additional exchange interaction $J'$ that interpolates between the pyrochlore lattice ($J'=0$) and the face-centered cubic lattice ($J'=J$). It is found that for $J'/J$ as low as $J'/J\ge 0.01$, the system is long range ordered : the disordered ground state of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet is unstable when introducing very small deviations from the pure $J'=0$ limit. Furthermore, it is found that the selected phase is a colli…
We study the effects of charge degrees of freedom on the spin excitation dynamics in quasi-one dimensional magnetic materials. Using the density matrix renormalization group method, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor of the Hubbard model at half electronic filling on a chain and on a ladder geometry, and compare the results with those obtained using the Heisenberg model, where charge degrees of freedom are considered frozen. For both chains and two-leg ladders, we find that the Hubbard model spectrum qualitatively resembles the Heisenberg spectrum -- with low-energy peaks resembl…
ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$ ($S=1/2$) is a promising new candidate for an ideal Kagomé Heisenberg antiferromagnet, because there is no magnetic phase transition down to $\sim$50 mK. We investigated its local magnetic and lattice environments with NMR techniques. We demonstrate that the intrinsic local spin susceptibility {\it decreases} toward T=0, but that slow freezing of the lattice near $\sim$50 K, presumably associated with OH bonds, contributes to a large increase of local spin susceptibility and its distribution. Spin dynamics near T=0 obey a power-law behavior in high magnetic fields.
We present a static, model-independent, experimental determination of the spin-spin correlation length ξin a quantum spin system. This is achieved in doped Haldane (i.e., S=1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic) chain Y(2)BaNi(1-x)Mg(x)O(5) by Y NMR imaging of the staggered magnetization induced around the Mg-impurities (i.e., chain boundaries) by magnetic field. The magnitude of this magnetization is found to decay exponentially with ξequal to the theoretical prediction for an infinite S=1 chain, and the staggered magnetic moment at the edge site showing the Curie behavior of an effective S=1/2 spin…
7Li NMR measurements on LiV2O4 from 0.5 to 4.2 K are reported. A small concentration of magnetic defects within the structure drastically changes the 7Li nuclear magnetization relaxation versus time from a pure exponential as in pure LiV2O4 to a stretched exponential, indicating glassy behavior of the magnetic defects. The stretched exponential function is described as arising from a distribution of 7Li nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates and we present a model for the distribution in terms of the dynamics of the magnetic defects. Our results explain the origin of recent puzzling 7Li NMR lit…
We calculate the temperature dependence of the boundary susceptibility $χ_B$ for the quantum ferromagnetic Heisenberg chain by a modified spin-wave theory (MSWT). We find that $χ_B$ diverges at low temperatures $\sim -T^{-3}$ and therefore more rapidly and with opposite sign than the bulk susceptibility $χ_{\text{bulk}}\sim T^{-2}$. Our result for $χ_B$ is identical in leading order with the result for the classical system. In next leading orders, however, quantum corrections to the classical result exist which are important to obtain a good description over a wide temperature range. For the $…
The disordered quasi-1D magnet BaCu2SiGeO7 is considered as one of the best physical realizations of the random Heisenberg chain model, which features an irregular distribution of the exchange parameters and whose ground state is predicted to be the scarcely investigated random-singlet state (RSS). Based on extensive 29Si NMR and magnetization studies of BaCu2SiGeO7, combined with numerical Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we obtain remarkable quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions of the random Heisenberg chain model and strong indications for the formation of a random-singlet st…
The electronic and magnetic properties of K$_{2}$CuP$_{2}$O$_{7}$ were investigated by means of susceptibility, specific heat and $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements and by LDA band structure calculations. The temperature dependence of the NMR shift $K(T)$ is well described by the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain (HAF) model with nearest neighbor exchange $J_{1}$ $\simeq $ $(141\pm 5)$ K. The corresponding mapping of an LDA-derived tight-binding model leads to $J_{1}^{LDA}$ $\simeq$ 196 K. The spin lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ decreases with temperature below …
We demonstrate quantum critical scaling for an $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain compound CuPzN in a magnetic field around saturation, by analysing previously reported magnetization [Y. Kono {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 114}, 037202 (2015)], thermal expansion [J. Rohrkamp {\it et al.}, J. Phys.: Conf. Ser. {\bf 200}, 012169 (2010)] and NMR relaxation data [H. Kühne {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 80}, 045110 (2009)]. The scaling of magnetization is demonstrated through collapsing the data for a range of both temperature and field onto a single curve without making any assumptio…
A model of mobile-bond defects is tentatively proposed to analyze the "anomalies" observed on the NMR spectrum of the quantum Heisenberg chains of Sr2CuO3. A bond-defect is a local change in the exchange coupling. It results in a local alternating magnetization (LAM), which when the defect moves, creates a flipping process of the local field seen by each nuclear spin. At low temperature, when the overlap of the LAM becomes large, the defects form a periodic structure, which extends over almost all the chains. In that regime, the density of bond-defects decreases linearly with T.
We report 7Li NMR, magnetic susceptibility, and heat capacity measurements on the triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet compound LiCrO2. We find that in contrast to NaCrO2, magnetic properties of LiCrO2 have a more pronounced three dimensional character with sharp anomalies in the temperature variation of the 7Li NMR intensity and the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. From heat capacity measurements we find that the total entropy related to the magnetic transition is in agreement with expectations. However, we find a significant contribution to the magnetic entropy in the range fr…
In terms of spinless fermions via the Jordan-Wigner transformation along a snake-like path and spin waves modified so as to restore the sublattice symmetry, we investigate static and dynamic properties of two-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg ladders. The specific heat is finely reproduced by the spinless fermions, whereas the magnetic susceptibility is well described by the modified spin waves. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate is discussed in detail with particular emphasis on its novel field dependence.
Nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in one-dimensional Heisenberg ferrimagnets is studied by means of a modified spin-wave theory. We consider the second-order process, where a nuclear spin flip induces virtual spin waves which are then scattered thermally via the four-magnon exchange interaction, as well as the first-order process, where a nuclear spin directly interacts with spin waves via the hyperfine interaction. We point out a possibility of the three-magnon relaxation process predominating over the Raman one and suggest model experiments.
The magnetic behavior of the low-dimensional phosphates (Sr,Ba)_2 Cu(PO_4)_2 and BaCuP_2O_7 was investigated by means of magnetic susceptibility and ^{31}P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. We present here the NMR shift K(T), the spin-lattice 1/T_1 and spin-spin 1/T_2 relaxation-rate data over a wide temperature range 0.02 K < T < 300 K. The T-dependence of the NMR K(T) is well described by the S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain model with an intrachain exchange of J/k_B = 165 K, 151 K, and 108 K in Sr_2Cu(PO_4)_2, Ba_2Cu(PO_4)_2, and BaCuP_2O_7, respectively. Our measuremen…
The critical properties of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg two-leg ladders are investigated in a magnetic field. Combining the exact diagonalization method and the finite-size-scaling analysis based on conformal field theory, we calculate the critical exponents of spin correlation functions numerically. For a strong interchain coupling, magnetization dependence of the critical exponents shows characteristic behavior depending on the sign of the interchain coupling. We also calculate the critical exponents for the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg two-leg ladder with a diagonal interaction, which is thought as a model…
The physical properties of itinerant antiferromagnetic (AFM) SrCr$_2$As$_2$ with body-centered tetragonal ThCr$_2$Si$_2$ structure were investigated in single crystalline and polycrystalline forms by electrical resistivity $ρ$, heat capacity $C_{\rm p}$, magnetic susceptibility $χ$ versus temperature~$T$ and magnetization $M$ versus applied magnetic field $H$ isotherm measurements as well as $^{75}$As and $^{53}$Cr nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the wide temperature range $T$ = 1.6--900 K. From the $χ(T)$ and $^{75}$As NMR measurements, the G-type AFM state below $T_{\rm N}$ …
We calculate the nuclear relaxation rate of oxygen in the undoped quasi two-dimensional quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet Sr_2CuO_2Cl_2 above the Neel temperature. The calculation is performed at two-loop order with the help of the Dyson-Maleev formulation of the spin-wave expansion, taking all scattering processes involving two and three magnons into account. At low temperatures T we find 1 / T_1 = c_1 T^3 + c_2 T^4 + O (T^5), and give explicit expressions for the coefficients c_1 (two-magnon scattering) and c_2 (three magnon scattering). We compare our result with a recent experiment by Thu…
We consider the thermodynamic properties of the quasi-two-dimensional spin-half Heisenberg ferromagnet on the stacked square and the stacked kagomé lattices by using the spin-rotation-invariant Green's function method. We calculate the critical temperature $T_C$, the uniform static susceptibility $χ$, the correlation lengths $ξ_ν$ and the magnetization $M$ and investigate the short-range order above $T_C$. We find that $T_C$ and $M$ at $T>0$ are smaller for the stacked kagomé lattice which we attribute to frustration effects becoming relevant at finite temperatures.
The kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is a leading candidate in the search for a spin system with a quantum spin-liquid ground state. The nature of its ground state remains a matter of great debate. We conducted 17-O single crystal NMR measurements of the S=1/2 kagome lattice in herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$, which is known to exhibit a spinon continuum in the spin excitation spectrum. We demonstrate that the intrinsic local spin susceptibility $χ_{kagome}$ deduced from the 17-O NMR frequency shift asymptotes to zero below temperature T ~ 0.03 J, where J ~ 200 K is the Cu-Cu super-exc…
Using the recently developed transfer-matrix renormalization group method, we have studied the thermodynamic properties of two-leg antiferromagnetic ladders in the magnetic field. Based on different behavior of magnetization, we found disordered spin liquid, Luttinger liquid, spin-polarized phases and a classical regime depending on magnetic field and temperature. Our calculations in Luttinger liquid regime suggest that both the divergence of the NMR relaxation rate and the anomalous specific heat behavior observed on Cu$_2$(C$_5$H$_{12}$N$_2$)$_2$Cl$_4$}are due to quasi-one-dimensional effect…
The S=1/2 Heisenberg spin chain compound SrCuO2 doped with different amounts of nickel (Ni), palladium (Pd), zinc (Zn) and cobalt (Co) has been studied by means of Cu nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Replacing only a few of the S=1/2 Cu ions with Ni, Pd, Zn or Co has a major impact on the magnetic properties of the spin chain system. In the case of Ni, Pd and Zn an unusual line broadening in the low temperature NMR spectra reveals the existence of an impurity-induced local alternating magnetization (LAM), while exponentially decaying spin-lattice relaxation rates $T_1^{-1}$ towards low temper…
Finite-temperature local spin dynamics within the random spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain is studied numerically. The aim is to explain measured NMR spin-lattice relaxation times in BaCu_{2}(Si_{0.5}Ge_{0.5})_{2}O_{7}, which is the realization of a random spin chain. In agreement with experiments we find that the distribution of relaxation times within the model shows a very large span similar to the stretched-exponential form. The distribution is strongly reduced with increasing T but stays finite also in the high-T limit. Our results reveal the crucial role of the anisotropy (inte…
NMR and magnetization measurements in Li$_2$VOSiO$_4$ and Li$_2$VOGeO$_4$ are reported. The analysis of the susceptibility shows that both compounds are two-dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnets on a square lattice with a sizeable frustration induced by the competition between the superexchange couplings $J_1$ along the sides of the square and $J_2$ along the diagonal. Li$_2$VOSiO$_4$ undergoes a low-temperature phase transition to a collinear order, as theoretically predicted for $J_2/J_1 > 0.5$. Just above the magnetic transition the degeneracy between the two collinear ground stat…
Nuclear magnetic resonance and magnetization measurements were used to probe the magnetic features of single-crystalline Bi(Cu(1-x)Znx)2PO6 with 0<x<0.05 at temperatures between 2.6 K and 300 K. The simple lineshape of the 31P NMR signals of the pristine compound changes considerably for x>0 and we present clear evidence for a temperature dependent variation of the local magnetization close to the Zn sites. The generic nature of this observation is indicated by results of model calculations on appropriate spin systems of limited size employing QMC methods.
The local response to a uniform field around vacancies in the two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet is determined by numerical quantum Monte Carlo simulations as a function of temperature. It is possible to separate the Knight shifts into uniform and staggered contributions on the lattice which are analyzed and understood in detail. The contributions show interesting long and short range behavior that may be of relevance in NMR and susceptibility measurements. For more than one impurity remarkable non-linear enhancement and cancellation effects take place. We predict that th…
We present a systematic study of the variations of the ^{7}Li NMR properties versus magnetic defect concentration up to 0.83 mol% within the spinel structure of polycrystalline powder samples and a collection of small single crystals of LiV2O4 in the temperature range from 0.5 to 4.2 K. We also report static magnetization measurements and ac magnetic susceptibility measurements at 14 MHz on the samples at low temperatures. Both the NMR spectrum and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate are inhomogeneous in the presence of the magnetic defects. The NMR data for the powders are well explained by …
We present NMR measurements of a strong-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic ladder compound (C7H10N)2CuBr4 under magnetic fields up to 15 T in the temperature range from 1.2 K down to 50 mK. From the splitting of NMR lines we determine the phase boundary and the order parameter of the low-temperature (3-dimensional) long-range-ordered phase. In the Tomonaga-Luttinger regime above the ordered phase, NMR relaxation reflects characteristic power-law decay of spin correlation functions as 1/T1 T^(1/2K-1), which allows us to determine the interaction parameter K as a function of field. We fin…
Magnetic properties of AMoOPO$_4$Cl (A = K, Rb) with Mo$^{5+}$ ions in the 4$d^1$ electronic configuration are investigated by magnetization, heat capacity and NMR measurements on single crystals, combined with powder neutron diffraction experiments. The magnetization measurements reveal that they are good model compounds for the spin-1/2 $J_1-J_2$ square lattice magnet with the first and second nearest-neighbor interactions. Magnetic transitions are observed at around 6 and 8 K in the K and Rb compounds, respectively. In contrast to the normal Néel-type antiferromagnetic order, the NMR and ne…

Recently, it has been shown that spin nematic (quadrupolar) or higher multipolar correlation functions exhibit a quasi long-range order in the wide region of the field-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid (TLL) phase in spin-1/2 zigzag chains. In this paper, we point out that the temperature dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 in these multipolar TLLs is qualitatively different from that in more conventional TLLs of one-dimensional quantum magnets (e.g., the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain); 1/T_1 decreases with lowering temperature in multipolar TLL. We also discuss low-energy features in spin…
We report the anomalous breakdown in the scaling of the microscopic magnetic susceptibility, as measured via the ${}^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) shift $K$, with the bulk magnetic susceptibility $χ$ in the paramagnetic state of Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$. This anomaly occurs near $T_\mathrm{max} \sim 117$ K the maximum in $χ(T)$ and is therefore associated with the onset of quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) magnetic correlations. The spin-lattice relaxation rate divided by temperature $(T_1T)^{-1}$ in Mn$_2$P$_2$S$_6$ exhibits broad peak-like behavior as a function of temperature, qualitativel…
We report on a comprehensive characterization of the newly synthesized Cu$^{2+}$-based molecular magnet [Cu(pz)$_2$(2-HOpy)$_2$](PF$_6$)$_2$ (CuPOF), where pz = C$_4$H$_4$N$_2$ and 2-HOpy = C$_5$H$_4$NHO. From a comparison of theoretical modeling to results of bulk magnetometry, specific heat, $μ^+$SR, ESR, and NMR spectroscopy, this material is determined as an excellent realization of the 2D square-lattice $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with a moderate intraplane nearest-neighbor exchange coupling of $J/k_\mathrm{B} = 6.80(5)$ K, and an extremely small interlayer interaction of a…
High resolution inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the elementary magnetic excitations in multiferroic MnWO4 consist of low energy dispersive electromagnons in addition to the well-known spin-wave excitations. The latter can well be modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magnetic exchange coupling extending to the 12th nearest neighbor. They exhibit a spin-wave gap of 0.61(1) meV. Two electromagnon branches appear at lower energies of 0.07(1) meV and 0.45(1) meV at the zone center. They reflect the dynamic magnetoelectric coupling and persist in both, the collinear magnetic and parael…
Layered Co oxide NaxCoO2.yH2O with the superconducting transition temperature Tc =4.5 K has been studied by 59Co-NMR. The Knight shift K estimated from the observed spectra for powder sample exhibits almost temperature(T)-independent behavior above Tc and decreases with decreasing T below Tc. This result and the existence of the coherence peak in the spin-lattice-relaxation-rate versus T curve reported by the present authors indicate, naively speaking, that the singlet order parameter with s-wave symmetry is realized in NaxCoO2.yH2O. Differences of the observed behaviors between the spectra of…
Low-temperature magnetization curves and thermodynamics of a frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer with the antiferromagnetic intradimer interaction and either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic interdimer interaction are investigated in a highly frustrated parameter region, where localized many-magnon eigenstates provide the most dominant contribution to magnetothermodynamics. Low-energy states of the highly frustrated spin-1/2 Heisenberg triangular bilayer can be accordingly found from a mapping correspondence with an effective triangular-lattice spin-1/2 Ising model in a field. …
$^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements have been carried out to investigate the magnetic properties and spin dynamics of Fe$^{3+}$ ($S$ = 5/2) spins in the two-dimensional triangular lattice (TL) compound Na$_3$Fe(PO$_4$)$_2$. The temperature ($T$) dependence of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rates ($1/T_1$) shows a clear peak around Néel temperature, $T_{\rm N} = 10.9$~K, corresponding to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition. From the temparature dependence of NMR shift ($K$) above $T_{\rm N}$, an exchange coupling between Fe$^{3+}$ spins was estimated to be $J/k_{\rm B}\sim…

We use numerical techniques to study dynamical properties at finite temperature ($T$) of the Heisenberg spin chain with random exchange couplings, which realizes the random singlet (RS) fixed point in the low-energy limit. Specifically, we study the dynamic spin structure factor $S(q,ω)$, which can be probed directly by inelastic neutron scattering experiments and, in the limit of small $ω$, in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments through the spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$. Our work combines three complementary methods: exact diagonalization, matrix-product-state algorithms, and …
