The arrival directions of ultrahigh energy extensive air showers (EAS) by Yakutsk, AGASA and P. Auger data are considered. It is found that the arrival directions of EAS with a deficit muons by Yakutsk data are not isotropy. Majority of these EAS form doublets which have maximum at side anticenter of Galaxy. It is shown that some EAS by data of Yakutsk, AGASA, P.Auger correlate with pulsars. These pulsars are situated near Input and Output Local arm Galaxy Orion. The majority of these pulsars have a short period rotate around of their axes. The problem of cosmic ray origin is discussed.
The Pierre Auger Collaboration has provided a compelling indication for a possible correlation between the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays and nearby starburst galaxies. Herein we show how the latest large-scale modeling of starburst galaxies is compatible with the cosmic rays producing the anisotropy signal being accelerated at the terminal shock of superwinds.
It has long been recognized that magnetic fields play an important role in many astrophysical environments, yet the strength and structure of magnetic fields beyond our solar system have been at best only qualitatively constrained. The Galactic magnetic field in particular is crucial for modeling the transport of Galactic CRs, for calculating the background to dark matter and CMB-cosmology studies, and for determining the sources of UHECRs. The observation of neutrinos from cosmic accelerators will be revolutionary. High energy neutrinos are closely connected to ultrahigh energy cosmic rays and their sources. Cosmic ray sources are likely to produce neutrinos and the propagation of ultrahigh cosmic rays from distant sources can generate PeV to ZeV neutrinos. We briefly review recent progress on the observations of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays and their implications for the future detections of high energy neutrinos.
We describe the current situation of the data on the highest energy particles in the Universe - the ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. The new results in the field come from the Telescope Array experiment in Utah, U.S.A. This is a review of the most resent results from the investigation of the Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays, particles of energy exceeding 10$^{18}$ eV. After a general introduction to the topic and a brief review of the lower energy cosmic rays and the detection methods, the two most recent experiments, the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) and the Southern Auger Observatory are described. We present a search for microwave emission from air showers induced by ultrahigh energy cosmic rays with the microwave detection of air showers experiment. No events were found, ruling out a wide range of power flux and coherence of the putative emission, including those suggested by recent laboratory measurements.

The origin of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) is an open question. In this proceeding, we first review the general physical requirements that a source must meet for acceleration to 10-100 EeV, including the consideration that the shock is not highly relativistic. We show that shocks in the backflows of radio galaxies can meet these requirements. We discuss a model in which giant-lobed radio galaxies such as Centaurus A and Fornax A act as slowly-leaking UHECR reservoirs, with the UHECRs being accelerated during a more powerful past episode. Ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) can be accelerated by tidal disruption events of stars by black holes. We suggest a novel mechanism for UHECR acceleration wherein white dwarfs (WDs) are tidally compressed by intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs), leading to their ignition and subsequent explosion as a supernova. Cosmic rays accelerated by the supernova may receive an energy boost when crossing the accretion-powered jet. Fast-spinning newborn pulsars are intriguing candidate sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). The acceleration of particles with a given composition in a fraction of the extragalactic pulsar population can give a consistent explanation for the measurements of the Auger Observatory. We calculate the associated diffuse neutrino flux produced while particles cross the supernova ejecta surrounding the stars. The maximum cosmic ray energy achievable by acceleration by a relativistic blast wave is derived. It is shown that forward shocks from long GRB in the interstellar medium are powerful enough to produce the Galactic cosmic-ray component up to the ankle at $4\times 10^{18}$eV, as per an earlier suggestion (Levinson and Eichler, 1993). It is further argued that, were extragalactic long GRB responsible for the component {\it above} the ankle as well, the contribution from an occasional Galactic GRB within the solar circle would yield more than the observational limits on the outward flux from the …
It is suggested that essentially all of the UHECRs we detect, including those at the highest energy, originate in our Galaxy. It is shown that even if the density of sources decreases with Galactic radius, then the anisotropy and composition can be understood. Inward anisotropy, as recently reported by the Auger collaboration can be understood as drift along the current sheet of UHECRs originating outside the solar circle, as predicted in Kumar and Eichler (2014), while those originating within the solar circle exit the Galaxy at high latitudes.
IceCube detects more than 100,000 neutrinos per year in the GeV- to PeV-energy range. Among those, we have isolated a flux of high-energy cosmic neutrinos. I will discuss the instrument, the analysis of the data, the significance of the discovery of cosmic neutrinos, and the recent multi-messenger observation of a flaring TeV blazar in coincidence with the IceCube neutrino alert IC170922.
The origin and nature of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) are one of the most intriguing mysteries in particle astrophysics and astronomy. We present spectra and mass composition of cosmic rays incoming to the Earth in the energy range (0.5-2)10^20 eV. As their sources we consider Seyfert galaxies located at distances < 40 Mpc, following an acceleration model for such moderate-power objects. Mass composition of the particles at sources is assumed to be mixed. Generation spectra are described by a function E^(-g0), where g0 is an arbitrary parameter. It is shown that the assumptions adopted make it possible to describe experimental data provided by HiRes and Pierre Auger Observatory, using different values of g0.
We study the propagation of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECR) in the Galaxy, concentrating on the energy range below the ankle in the spectrum at 4 EeV. A Monte-Carlo method, based on analytical solutions to the time-dependent diffusion problem, is used to account for intermittency by placing sources at random locations. Assuming a source population that scales with baryon mass density or star formation (e.g. long GRB), we derive constraints arising from intermittency and the observational limits on the composition and anisotropy. In the present paper we investigate the production of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) from Seyferts. We discuss the UHECR luminosities obtained by two possible engine trigger models: pure radiative transfer and the energy extraction from poloidal magnetic flux. The first case is modeled by Kerr slim disk or Bondi accretion mechanisms. Since it is assumed that the broadband spectra of Seyferts indicate that at least the outer portions of their accretion disks are cold and geometrically thin, and since our results point that the consequent radiative energy transfer is inefficient, we build…
We study the effects that the diffusion of the cosmic rays in the magnetic field of the Local Supercluster can have on the spectrum of a nearby extragalactic source at ultrahigh energies. We find that the strong enhancement of the flux below the energy at which the transition between the diffusive and quasirectilinear regimes takes place, as well as the suppression at lower energies associated with a finite source age, can help to explain the observed features of the cosmic-ray spectrum and the composition. Data of Pierre Auger Observatory show a proton-dominated chemical composition of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays spectrum at (1 - 3) EeV and a steadily heavier composition with energy increasing. In order to explain this feature we assume that (1 - 3) EeV protons are extragalactic and derive their maximum acceleration energy, E_p^{max} \simeq 4 EeV, compatible with both the spectrum and the composition. The origin of the highest energy cosmic rays represents one of the most conspicuous enigmas of modern astrophysics, in spite of gigantic experimental efforts in the past fifty years, and of active theoretical research. The past decade has known exciting experimental results, most particularly the detection of a cut-off at the expected position for the long sought Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin suppression as well as evidence for large scale anisotropies. This paper summarizes and discusses recent achievements in this field.

Newly born magnetars are good candidate sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays. These objects can in principle easily accelerate particles to the highest energies required to satisfy the ultrahigh energy cosmic ray scenario (E~10^{20-21} eV), thanks to their important rotational and magnetic energy reservoirs. We investigate the production of magnetic flux from rotating black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and compare it with the upper limit of ultrahigh energy cosmic ray (UHECR) luminosities, calculated from observed integral flux of GeV-TeV gamma rays for nine UHECR AGN sources. We find that, for the expected range of black hole rotations (0.44<a<0.80), the corresponding bounds of theoretical magnetic luminosities from AGNs coincides with the calculated UHECR luminosity. Dust grains may be accelerated to relativistic speeds by radiation pressure, diffusive shocks, and other acceleration mechanisms. Such relativistic grains have been suggested as primary particles of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). In this paper, we first revisit the problem of acceleration by radiation pressure and calculate maximum grain velocities achieved. We find that grains can be accelerated to relativistic speeds with Lorentz factor $γ< 2$ by powerful radiation sources, which is lower than earlier estimates showing that $γ$ could reach $\sim 10$. Very recently, the Pierre Auger Collaboration reported a $4.5σ$ correlation between the arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays and nearby starburst galaxies. The cosmic rays producing the anisotropy signal have been proposed to originate in low-luminosity gamma-ray bursts (llGRBs). On the basis of the well-justified assumption that at redshift $z<0.3$ the host metallicity is a good indicator of the llGRB production rate, we show that the association of llGRBs and the starbursts correlating with Auger data is excluded at the 90% confidence level.
Variability is a general property of accretion discs and their associated jets. We introduce a semi-analytic model for particle acceleration and radio jet/lobe evolution and explore the effect of Myr timescale jet variability on the particles accelerated by an AGN jet. A hard $γ$-ray spectrum of supernova remnant G106.3+2.7 can be explained by using the hadronic model with the gluon condensation effect. This implies that not only PeVatrons but also EeVatrons generally exist in the universe including our galaxy, and they can accelerate protons to beyond "ankle" ($10^{19}~eV$). We perform Monte Carlo simulations of transrelativistic shear acceleration dedicated to a jet-cocoon system of active galactic nuclei. A certain fraction of galactic cosmic rays in a halo is entrained, and sufficiently high-energy particles can be injected to the reacceleration process and further accelerated up to 100 EeV. We show that the shear reacceleration mechanism leads to a hard spectrum of escaping cosmic rays, $dL_E/dE\propto E^{-1}-E^0$, distinct from a conventional $E^{-2}$ spectrum. We propose an innovative test of Lorentz symmetry by observing pairs of simultaneous parallel extensive air showers produced by the fragments of ultrahigh-energy cosmic ray nuclei which disintegrated in collisions with solar photons. We show that the search for a cross-correlation of showers in arrival time and direction becomes background free for an angular scale < 3^\circ and a time window {\cal O}(10 s). We study general implications of the IceCube observations in the energy range from $10^{6}$ GeV to $10^{10}$ GeV for the origin of extragalactic ultrahigh energy cosmic rays assuming that high energy neutrinos are generated by the photomeson production of protons in the extragalactic universe. We investigate several aspects of the correlations reported by the Pierre Auger Observatory between the highest energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) and galaxies in the Veron-Cetty Veron (VCV) catalog of AGNs. First, we quantify the extent of the inhomogeneity and impurity of the VCV catalog. Ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) arrive at Earth from the most energetic astrophysical accelerators in the universe. They collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere with energies about ten times higher than any man-made accelerator, and produce gigantic cascades of secondary particles, called extensive air showers (EAS). Extensive air showers can be detected spreading particle detectors over a large area to record the interactions of secondary particles. Ultrahigh energy protons and nuclei from extragalactic cosmic ray sources initiate intergalactic electromagnetic cascades, resulting in observable fluxes of $γ$-rays in the GeV-TeV energy domain. The total spectrum of such cascade $γ$-rays of hadronic nature is significantly harder than the one usually expected from blazars. The spectra of some sources known as "extreme TeV blazars" could be well-described by this "intergalactic hadronic cascade model" (IHCM). Ultrahigh energy cosmic rays that produce giant extensive showers of charged particles and photons when they interact in the Earth's atmosphere provide a unique tool to search for new physics. Of particular interest is the possibility of detecting a very small violation of Lorentz invariance such as may be related to the structure of space-time near the Planck scale of $\sim 10^{-35}$m. We discuss here the possible signature of Lorentz invariance violation on the spectrum of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays as compared with present observations of giant air showers. Detecting and characterizing the anisotropy pattern of the arrival directions of the highest energy cosmic rays are crucial steps towards the identification of their sources. We discuss a possible distortion of the cosmic ray flux induced by the anisotropic and inhomogeneous distribution of extragalactic magnetic fields in cases where sources of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are rare transient phenomena, such as gamma-ray bursts and/or newly born magnetars. Newly-born pulsars offer favorable sites for the injection of heavy nuclei, and for their further acceleration to ultrahigh energies. Once accelerated in the pulsar wind, nuclei have to escape from the surrounding supernova envelope. We examine this escape analytically and numerically, and discuss the pulsar source scenario in light of the latest ultrahigh energy cosmic ray (UHECR) data. Our calculations show that, at early times, when protons can be accelerated to energies E>10^20 eV, the young supernova shell tends to prevent their escape.
