The Pierre Auger Collaboration has provided a compelling indication for a possible correlation between the arrival directions of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays and nearby starburst galaxies. Herein we show how the latest large-scale modeling of starburst galaxies is compatible with the cosmic rays producing the anisotropy signal being accelerated at the terminal shock of superwinds.
Thermal energies deposited by OB stellar clusters in starburst galaxies lead to the formation of galactic superwinds. Multi-wavelength observations of starburst-driven superwinds pointed at complex thermal and ionization structures which cannot adequately be explained by simple adiabatic assumptions. In this study, we perform hydrodynamic simulations of a fluid model coupled to radiative cooling functions, and generate time-dependent non-equilibrium photoionization models to predict physical conditions and ionization structures of superwinds using the MAIHEM atomic and cooling package built on…
We report our optical spectroscopic study of the nucleus and its surrounding region of a nearby luminous infrared galaxy NGC 4418. This galaxy has been known to host a compact obscured nucleus, showing distinct characteristics such as a very compact ($\sim 20$ pc) sub-mm and mid-infrared core and dusty circumnuclear region with massive molecular gas concentration. We detected dusty superwind outflow at $\gtrsim 1$ kpc scale along the disk semiminor axis in both shock-heated emission lines and enhanced interstellar Na D absorption. This superwind shows basic characteristics similar to those of …
We performed deep spectropolarimetric observations of a prototypical starburst galaxy M82 with the Subaru Telescope in order to study the kinematics of the dust outflow. We obtained optical polarized emission-line spectra up to $\sim$4~kpc away from the nucleus of the galaxy along three position angles within the conical outflowing wind (superwind). The H$α$ emission line in the superwind is strongly polarized and the polarization pattern shows dust scattering of central light sources, being consistent with the previous works. The intensity weighted polarization degree of the H$α$ line reaches…
We present results from a 30 ksec Chandra observation of the important starburst galaxy NGC 2782, covering the 0.3-10keV energy band. We find evidence of a superwind of small extent, that is likely in an early stage of development. We find a total of 27 X-ray point sources within a region of radius 2$D_{25}$ of the galaxy centre and which are likely associated with the galaxy. Of these, 13 are ULXs ($L_{X}\geq 10^{39}~ erg s ^{-1}$) and a number have likely counterparts. The X-ray luminosities of the ULX candidates are $1.2-3.9\times10^{39}~ erg s ^{-1}$. NGC2782 seems to have an unusually lar…
NGC 2146, a nearby luminous infrared galaxy (LIRG), presents evidence for outflows along the disk minor axis in all gas phases (ionized, neutral atomic and molecular). We present an analysis of the multi-phase starburst driven superwind in the central 5 kpc as traced in spatially resolved spectral line observations, using far-IR Herschel PACS spectroscopy, to probe the effects on the atomic and ionized gas, and optical integral field spectroscopy to examine the ionized gas through diagnostic line ratios. We observe an increased ~250 km/s velocity dispersion in the [OI] 63 micron, [OIII] 88 mic…
During five decades astronomers have been puzzled by the presence of strong absorption features including metal lines, observed in the optical and ultraviolet spectra of quasars, signalling in- and outflowing gas winds with relative velocities up to several thousands of km/sec. In particular the location of these winds - close to the quasar, further out in its host galaxy, or in its direct environment - and the possible impact on their surroundings have been issues of intense discussion and uncertainty. Using our Herschel Space Observatory data, we report a tendency for this so-called associat…
By clearing neutral gas away from a young starburst, superwinds may regulate the escape of Lyman continuum (LyC) photons from star-forming galaxies. However, models predict that superwinds may not launch in the most extreme, compact starbursts. We explore the role of outflows in generating low optical depths in the Green Peas (GPs), the only known star-forming population with several confirmed and candidate LyC-leaking galaxies. With Hubble Space Telescope UV spectra of 25 low-redshift GPs, including new observations of 13 of the most highly ionized GPs, we compare the kinematics of UV absorpt…
Radiation pressure on dust grains may be an important physical mechanism driving galaxy-wide superwinds in rapidly star-forming galaxies. We calculate the combined dust and gas Eddington ratio (Gamma) for the archetypal superwind of M82. By combining archival GALEX data, a standard dust model, Monte Carlo dust scattering calculations, and the Herschel map of the dust surface density distribution, the observed FUV/NUV surface brightness in the outflow constrains both the total UV luminosity escaping from the starburst along its minor axis (L_*, UV) and the flux-mean opacity, thus allowing a cal…

We observed the starburst galaxy M82 in 850$μ$m polarised light with the POL-2 polarimeter on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We interpret our observed polarisation geometry as tracing a two-component magnetic field: a poloidal component aligned with the galactic 'superwind', extending to a height $\sim 350$ pc above and below the central bar; and a spiral-arm-aligned, or possibly toroidal, component in the plane of the galaxy, which dominates the 850$μ$m polarised light distribution at galactocentric radii $\gtrsim 2$ kpc. Comparison of our results with recent HAWC+ measurements of …
ALMA imaging of the cold molecular medium in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 1808 is presented. The observations reveal the distribution of molecular gas, traced by $^{12}$CO (1-0) and $^{12}$CO (3-2), and continuum (93 and 350 GHz) across the central 1 kpc starburst region at high resolution of $\sim1$ arcsec. A molecular gas torus (radius $\sim30$ pc) is discovered in the circumnuclear disk (CND; central 100 pc), with a high CO (3-2)/CO (1-0) ratio of $\sim1$, surrounded by massive ($10^6$-$10^7$ $M_\odot$) clouds with high star formation efficiency (SFE$\sim10^{-8}$ yr$^{-1}$), molecular sp…
[abridged] We present optical integral field unit observations (VLT/VIMOS-IFU and WIYN/SparsePak), and associated archival deep Halpha imaging (ESO 2.2m WFI), of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC253. With VIMOS we observed the nuclear region and southern superwind outflow in detail with five pointings, and with SparsePak we observed two partially overlapping regions covering the central disk and northern halo. The high signal-to-noise of the data and spectral resolution (80-90 km/s) enable us to accurately decompose the emission line profiles into multiple components. The combination of these da…
We have mapped the superwind/halo region of the nearby starburst galaxy M82 in the mid-infrared with $Spitzer-IRS$. The spectral regions covered include the H$_2 S(1)-S(3)$, [NeII], [NeIII] emission lines and PAH features. We estimate the total warm H$_2$ mass and the kinetic energy of the outflowing warm molecular gas to be between $M_{warm}\sim5-17\times10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ and $E_{K}\sim6-20\times10^{53}$ erg. Using the ratios of the 6.2, 7.7 and 11.3 micron PAH features in the IRS spectra, we are able to estimate the average size and ionization state of the small grains in the superwind. Ther…
Recent work has both illuminated and mystified our attempts to understand cosmic rays (CRs) in starburst galaxies. I discuss my new research exploring how CRs interact with the ISM in starbursts. Molecular clouds provide targets for CR protons to produce pionic gamma rays and ionization, but those same losses may shield the cloud interiors. In the densest molecular clouds, gamma rays and Al-26 decay can provide ionization, at rates up to those in Milky Way molecular clouds. I then consider the free-free absorption of low frequency radio emission from starbursts, which I argue arises from many …
Superwinds and superbubbles driven by mechanical feedback from super star clusters (SSCs) are common features in many star-forming galaxies. While the adiabatic fluid model can well describe the dynamics of superwinds, several observations of starburst galaxies revealed the presence of compact regions with suppressed superwinds and strongly radiative cooling, i.e., catastrophic cooling. In the present study, we employ the non-equilibrium atomic chemistry and cooling package MAIHEM, built on the FLASH hydrodynamics code, to generate a grid of models investigating the dependence of cooling modes…
The role of starburst winds versus active galactic nuclei (AGN) jets/winds in the formation of the kiloparsec scale radio emission seen in Seyferts is not yet well understood. In order to be able to disentangle the role of various components, we have observed a sample of Seyfert galaxies exhibiting kpc-scale radio emission suggesting outflows, along with a comparison sample of starburst galaxies, with the EVLA B-array in polarimetric mode at 1.4 GHz and 5~GHz. Polarization is clearly detected in three Seyfert galaxies and one starburst galaxy. The Seyfert galaxy NGC\,2639, shows highly polariz…
Frequent supernova explosions in compact starburst regions are a main shaper of these regions' interstellar media (ISM). In most starbursts, the supernova remnants blast open a hot phase that fills the regions and launches a superwind. Denser starbursts are too overpressured for hot wind formation, but supernovae still stir up the ISM. I argue that supernovae power ubiquitous turbulence through each of the starburst ISM phases, including the hot wind, and that a fluctuation dynamo amplifies magnetic fields until they are in equipartition with the turbulence. Supernovae can drive turbulence wit…
The duration of a starburst is a fundamental parameter affecting the evolution of galaxies yet, to date, observational constraints on the durations of starbursts are not well established. Here we study the recent star formation histories (SFHs) of three nearby dwarf galaxies to rigorously quantify the duration of their starburst events using a uniform and consistent approach. We find that the bursts range from ~200 - ~400 Myr in duration resolving the tension between the shorter timescales often derived observationally with the longer timescales derived from dynamical arguments. If these three…
To understand the origin of radio emission in radio-quiet AGN and differentiate between the contributions from star formation, AGN accretion, and jets, we have observed a nearby sample of Seyfert galaxies along with a comparison sample of starburst galaxies using the EVLA in full-polarization mode in the B-array configuration. The radio morphologies of the Seyfert galaxies show lobe/bubble-like features or prominent cores in radio emission whereas the starburst galaxies show radio emission spatially coincident with the star-forming regions seen in optical images. There is tentative evidence th…
