We consider the supercritical finite-range random connection model where the points $x,y$ of a homogeneous planar Poisson process are connected with probability $f(|y-x|)$ for a given $f$. Performing percolation on the resulting graph, we show that the critical probabilities for site and bond percolation satisfy the strict inequality $p_c^{\rm site} > p_c^{\rm bond}$. We also show that reducing the connection function $f$ strictly increases the critical Poisson intensity. Finally, we deduce that performing a spreading transformation on $f$ (thereby allowing connections over greater distances but with lower probabilities, leaving average degrees unchanged) {\em strictly} reduces the critical Poisson intensity. This is of practical relevance, indicating that in many real networks it is in principle possible to exploit the presence of spread-out, long range connections, to achieve connectivity at a strictly lower density value.
We provide a new exponential concentration inequality for First Passage Percolation valid for a wide class of edge times distributions. This improves and extends a result by Benjamini, Kalai and Schramm which gave a variance bound for Bernoulli edge times. Our approach is based on some functional inequalities extending the work of Rossignol and Falik and Samorodnitsky.
We prove decoupling inequalities for the Gaussian free field on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d\geq 3$. As an application, we obtain exponential decay (with logarithmic correction for $d=3$) of the connectivity function of excursion sets for large values of the threshold.
Any infinite graph has site and bond percolation critical probabilities satisfying $p_c^{site}\geq p_c^{bond}$. The strict version of this inequality holds for many, but not all, infinite graphs. In this paper, the class of graphs for which the strict inequality holds is extended to a continuum percolation model. In Gilbert's graph with supercritical density on the Euclidean plane, there is almost surely a unique infinite connected component. We show that on this component $p_c^{site} > p_c^{bond}$. This also holds in higher dimensions.
In this paper we establish some relations between percolation on a given graph G and its geometry. Our main result shows that, if G has polynomial growth and satisfies what we call the local isoperimetric inequality of dimension d > 1, then p_c(G) < 1. This gives a partial answer to a question of Benjamini and Schramm. As a consequence of this result we derive, under the additional condition of bounded degree, that these graphs also undergo a non-trivial phase transition for the Ising-Model, the Widom-Rowlinson model and the beach model. Our techniques are also applied to dependent percolation…
We consider a dilute lattice obtained from the usual $\mathbb{Z}^3$ lattice by removing independently each of its columns with probability $1-ρ$. In the remaining dilute lattice independent Bernoulli bond percolation with parameter $p$ is performed. Let $ρ\mapsto p_c(ρ)$ be the critical curve which divides the subcritical and supercritical phases. We study the behavior of this curve near the disconnection threshold $ρ_c = p_c^{\text{site}}(\mathbb{Z}^2)$ and prove that, uniformly over $ρ$ it remains strictly below $1/2$ (the critical point for bond percolation on the square lattice $\mathbb{Z}…
It has been recently understood (arXiv:1212.2885, arXiv:1310.4764, arXiv:1410.0605) that for a general class of percolation models on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ satisfying suitable decoupling inequalities, which includes i.a.\ Bernoulli percolation, random interlacements and level sets of the Gaussian free field, large scale geometry of the unique infinite cluster in strongly percolative regime is qualitatively the same; in particular, the random walk on the infinite cluster satisfies the quenched invariance principle, Gaussian heat-kernel bounds and local CLT. In this paper we consider the random walk lo…
Let $\{η_{N, v}: v\in V_N\}$ be a discrete Gaussian free field in a two-dimensional box $V_N$ of side length $N$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We study the Liouville first passage percolation, i.e., the shortest path metric where each vertex is given a weight of $e^{γη_{N, v}}$ for some $γ>0$. We show that for sufficiently small but fixed $γ>0$, the expected Liouville FPP distance between any pair of vertices is $O(N^{1-γ^2/10^3})$.
Let $\{η(v): v\in V_N\}$ be a discrete Gaussian free field in a two-dimensional box $V_N$ of side length $N$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We study the Liouville first passage percolation, i.e., the shortest path metric where each vertex is given a weight of $e^{γη(v)}$ for some $γ>0$. We show that for sufficiently small but fixed $γ>0$, with probability tending to $1$ as $N\to \infty$, all geodesics between vertices of macroscopic Euclidean distances simultaneously have (the conjecturally unique) length exponent strictly larger than 1.
We provide the first nontrivial upper bound for the chemical distance exponent in two-dimensional critical percolation. Specifically, we prove that the expected length of the shortest horizontal crossing path of a box of side length $n$ in critical percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^2$ is bounded by $Cn^{2-δ}π_3(n)$, for some $δ>0$, where $π_3(n)$ is the "three-arm probability to distance $n$." This implies that the ratio of this length to the length of the lowest crossing is bounded by an inverse power of $n$ with high probability. In the case of site percolation on the triangular lattice, we obtain …
Consider critical Bernoulli percolation in the plane. We give a new proof of the sharp noise sensitivity theorem shown by Garban, Pete and Schramm. Contrary to the previous approaches, we do not use any spectral tool. We rather study differential inequalities satisfied by a dynamical four-arm event, in the spirit of Kesten's proof of scaling relations. We also obtain new results in dynamical percolation. In particular, we prove that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of times with both primal and dual percolation equals $2/3$ a.s.
We consider the standard model of i.i.d. first passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ given a distribution $G$ on $[0,+\infty]$ ($+\infty$ is allowed). When $G([0,+\infty]) < p_c(d)$, it is known that the time constant $μ_G$ exists. We are interested in the regularity properties of the map $G\mapstoμ_G$. We first study the specific case of distributions of the form $G_p=pδ_1+(1-p)δ_\infty$ for $p>p_c(d)$. In this case, the travel time between two points is equal to the length of the shortest path between the two points in a bond percolation of parameter $p$. We show that the function $p\mapsto …
We use isoperimetric inequalities combined with a new technique to prove upper bounds for the site percolation threshold of plane graphs with given minimum degree conditions. In the process we prove tight new isoperimetric bounds for certain classes of hyperbolic graphs. This establishes the vertex isoperimetric constant for all triangular and square hyperbolic lattices, answering a question of Lyons and Peres. We prove that plane graphs of minimum degree at least $7$ have site percolation threshold bounded away from $1/2$, which was conjectured by Benjamini and Schramm, and make progress on a…
In 1993 van den Berg and Kesten proved a strict monotonicity theorem for first passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$, $d \ge 2$: given two probability measures $ν$ and $\tildeν$ with finite mean, if $\tildeν$ is strictly more variable than $ν$ and $ν$ is subcritical in an appropriate sense, the time constant associated to $\tildeν$ is strictly smaller than the time constant associated to $ν$. In this paper, an analogous result is proven for (not necessarily almost-transitive) graphs of strict polynomial growth and for bounded degree graphs quasi-isometric to trees which satisfy a certain geome…
We apply a variation on the methods of Duminil-Copin, Raoufi, and Tassion to establish a new differential inequality applying to both Bernoulli percolation and the Fortuin-Kasteleyn random cluster model. This differential inequality has a similar form to that derived for Bernoulli percolation by Menshikov but with the important difference that it describes the distribution of the volume of a cluster rather than of its radius. We apply this differential inequality to prove the following: The critical exponent inequalities $γ\leq δ-1$ and $Δ\leq γ+1$ hold for percolation and the random cluster m…
We provide a new proof of the near-critical scaling relation $β=ξ_1ν$ for Bernoulli percolation on the square lattice already proved by Kesten in 1987. We rely on a novel approach that does not invoke Russo's formula, but rather relates differences in crossing probabilities at different scales. The argument is shorter and more robust than previous ones and is more likely to be adapted to other models. The same approach may be used to prove the other scaling relations appearing in Kesten's work.
Consider ordinary bond percolation on a finite or countably infinite graph. Let s, t, a and b be vertices. An earlier paper proved the (nonintuitive) result that, conditioned on the event that there is no open path from s to t, the two events "there is an open path from s to a" and "there is an open path from s to b" are positively correlated. In the present paper we further investigate and generalize the theorem of which this result was a consequence. This leads to results saying, informally, that, with the above conditioning, the open cluster of s is conditionally positively (self-)associate…
We study the problem of coexistence in a two-type competition model governed by first-passage percolation on $\Zd$ or on the infinite cluster in Bernoulli percolation. Actually, we prove for a large class of ergodic stationary passage times that for distinct points $x,y\in\Zd$, there is a strictly positive probability that $\{z\in\Zd;d(y,z)<d(x,z)\}$ and $\{z\in\Zd;d(y,z)>d(x,z)\}$ are both infinite sets. We also show that there is a strictly positive probability that the graph of time-minimizing path from the origin in first-passage percolation has at least two topological ends. This generali…
Consider a uniform expanders family G_n with a uniform bound on the degrees. It is shown that for any p and c>0, a random subgraph of G_n obtained by retaining each edge, randomly and independently, with probability p, will have at most one cluster of size at least c|G_n|, with probability going to one, uniformly in p. The method from Ajtai, Komlos and Szemeredi [Combinatorica 2 (1982) 1-7] is applied to obtain some new results about the critical probability for the emergence of a giant component in random subgraphs of finite regular expanding graphs of high girth, as well as a simple proof of…
Separated-occurrence inequalities are variants for dependent lattice models of the van den Berg-Kesten inequality for independent models. They take the form $P(A \circ_r B) \leq (1 + ce^{-εr})P(A)P(B)$, where $A \circ_r B$ is the event that $A$ and $B$ occur at separation $r$ in a configuration $ω$, that is, there exist two random sets of bonds or sites separated by at least distance $r$, one set responsible for the occurrence of the event $A$ in $ω$, the other for the occurrence of $B$. We establish such inequalities for certain subcritical FK models, and for certain Ising models which are at…
We study the percolative properties of random interlacements on the product of G with the integer line Z, when G is a weighted graph satisfying certain sub-Gaussian estimates attached to the parameters alpha > 1, measuring the volume growth on G, and beta between 2 and alpha + 1, measuring the sub-diffusive nature of the random walk on G. We develop decoupling inequalities, which are a key tool in showing that the critical level u_* for the percolation of the vacant set of random interlacements is always finite in our set-up, and that it is positive when alpha \geq 1 + beta/2. We also obtain s…
In this paper we study the strict majority bootstrap percolation process on graphs. Vertices may be active or passive. Initially, active vertices are chosen independently with probability p. Each passive vertex becomes active if at least half of its neighbors are active (and thereafter never changes its state). If at the end of the process all vertices become active then we say that the initial set of active vertices percolates on the graph. We address the problem of finding graphs for which percolation is likely to occur for small values of p. Specifically, we study a graph that we call r-whe…
We consider two-dimensional dependent dynamical site percolation where sites perform majority dynamics. We introduce the critical percolation function at time t as the infimum density with which one needs to begin in order to obtain an infinite open component at time t. We prove that, for any fixed time t, there is no percolation at criticality and that the critical percolation function is continuous. We also prove that, for any positive time, the percolation threshold is strictly smaller than the critical probability for independent site percolation.
We consider face and cycle percolation as models for continuum percolation based on random simplicial complexes in Euclidean space. Face percolation is defined through infinite sequences of $d$-simplices sharing a $(d-1)$-dimensional face. In contrast, cycle percolation demands the existence of infinite $d$-cycles, thereby generalizing the lattice notion of plaquette percolation. We discuss the sharp phase transition for face percolation and derive comparison results between the critical intensities for face and cycle percolation. Finally, we consider an alternate version of simplex percolatio…
In this paper, we establish moderate deviations for the chemical distance in Bernoulli percolation. The chemical distance between two points is the length of the shortest open path between these two points. Thus, we study the size of random fluctuations around the mean value, and also the asymptotic behavior of this mean value. The estimates we obtain improve our knowledge of the convergence to the asymptotic shape. Our proofs rely on concentration inequalities proved by Boucheron, Lugosi and Massart, and also on the approximation theory of subadditive functions initiated by Alexander.
We answer a question of Benjamini and Schramm by proving that under reasonable conditions, quotienting a graph strictly increases the value of its percolation critical parameter $p_c$. More precisely, let $\mathcal{G}=(V,E)$ be a quasi-transitive graph with $p_c(\mathcal{G})<1$, and let $G$ be a nontrivial group that acts freely on $V$ by graph automorphisms. Assume that $\mathcal{H}:=\mathcal{G}/G$ is quasi-transitive. Then one has $p_c(\mathcal{G})<p_c(\mathcal{H})$. We provide results beyond this setting: we treat the case of general covering maps and provide a similar result for the unique…
We investigate the so-called monochromatic arm exponents for critical percolation in two dimensions. These exponents, describing the probability of observing j disjoint macroscopic paths, are shown to exist and to form a different family from the (now well understood) polychromatic exponents. More specifically, our main result is that the monochromatic j-arm exponent is strictly between the polychromatic j-arm and (j+1)-arm exponents.
We consider two-dimensional critical bond percolation. Conditioned on the existence of an open circuit in an annulus, we show that the ratio of the expected size of the shortest open circuit to the expected size of the innermost circuit tends to zero as the side length of the annulus tends to infinity, the aspect ratio remaining fixed. The same proof yields a similar result for the lowest open crossing of a rectangle. In this last case, we answer a question of Kesten and Zhang by showing in addition that the ratio of the length of the shortest crossing to the length of the lowest tends to zero…
Two related issues are explored for bond percolation on the d-dimensional cubic lattice (with d > 2) and its dual plaquette process. Firstly, for what values of the parameter p does the complement of the infinite open cluster possess an infinite component? The corresponding critical point p_fin satisfies p_fin >= p_c, and strict inequality is proved when either d is sufficiently large, or d >= 7 and the model is sufficiently spread out. It is not known whether d >= 3 suffices. Secondly, for what p does there exist an infinite dual surface of plaquettes? The associated critical point p_surf sat…
We consider an inhomogeneous oriented percolation model introduced by de Lima, Rolla and Valesin. In this model, the underlying graph is an oriented rooted tree in which each vertex points to each of its $d$ children with `short' edges, and in addition, each vertex points to each of its $d^k$ descendant at a fixed distance $k$ with `long' edges. A bond percolation process is then considered on this graph, with the prescription that independently, short edges are open with probability $p$ and long edges are open with probability $q$. We study the behavior of the critical curve $q_c(p)$: we find…
The lilypond model on a point process in $d$-space is a growth-maximal system of non-overlapping balls centred at the points. We establish central limit theorems for the total volume and the number of components of the lilypond model on a sequence of Poisson or binomial point processes on expanding windows. For the lilypond model over a homogeneous Poisson process, we give subexponentially decaying tail bounds for the size of the cluster at the origin. Finally, we consider the enhanced Poisson lilypond model where all the balls are enlarged by a fixed amount (the enhancement parameter), and sh…
The connective constant of a graph is the exponential growth rate of the number of self-avoiding walks starting at a given vertex. Strict inequalities are proved for connective constants of vertex-transitive graphs. Firstly, the connective constant decreases strictly when the graph is replaced by a non-trivial quotient graph. Secondly, the connective constant increases strictly when a quasi-transitive family of new edges is added. These results have the following implications for Cayley graphs. The connective constant of a Cayley graph decreases strictly when a new relator is added to the grou…
Spatial random graphs capture several important properties of real-world networks. We prove quenched results for the continuum space version of scale-free percolation introduced in [DW18]. This is an undirected inhomogeneous random graph whose vertices are given by a Poisson point process in $\mathbb R^d$. Each vertex is equipped with a random weight and the probability that two vertices are connected by an edge depends on their weights and on their distance. Under suitable conditions on the parameters of the model, we show that, for almost all realizations of the point process, the degree dis…
In independent bond percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ with parameter $p$, if one removes the vertices of the infinite cluster (and incident edges), for which values of $p$ does the remaining graph contain an infinite cluster? Grimmett-Holroyd-Kozma used the triangle condition to show that for $d \geq 19$, the set of such $p$ contains values strictly larger than the percolation threshold $p_c$. With the work of Fitzner-van der Hofstad, this has been reduced to $d \geq 11$. We improve this result by showing that for $d \geq 10$ and some $p>p_c$, there are infinite paths consisting of "shielded" vert…
In this paper, we are interested in the loop cluster model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ for $d\geq 3$. It is a long range model with two parameters $α$ and $κ$, where the non-negative parameter $α$ measures the amount of loops, and $κ$ plays the role of killing on vertices penalizing ($κ\geq 0$) or favoring ($κ<0$) appearance of large loops. We consider the truncated loop cluster model formed by the Poisson point process $\mathcal{L}_{α,\leq m}$, which is the restriction of $\mathcal{L}_α$ on loops with at most $m$ jumps. We prove the existence of percolation in a $2$-dimensional slab for the truncated l…
We consider generic finite range percolation models on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ under a high temperature assumption (exponential decay of connection probabilities and exponential ratio weak mixing). We prove that the rate of decay of point-to-point connections exists in every directions and show that it naturally extends to a norm on $\mathbb{R}^d$. This result is the base input to obtain fine understanding of the high temperature phase and is usually proven using correlation inequalities (such as FKG). The present work makes no use of such model specific properties.
In this paper, we use the semi-group method and an adaptation of the $L^2-$method of Hörmander to establish some $Φ-$entropy inequalities and asymmetric covariance estimates for the strictly convex measures in $\mathbb R^n$. These inequalities extends the ones for the strictly log-concave measures to more general setting of convex measures. The $Φ-$entropy inequalities are turned out to be sharp in the special case of Cauchy measures. Finally, we show that the similar inequalities for log-concave measures can be obtained from our results in the limiting case.
Heuristics indicate that point processes exhibiting clustering of points have larger critical radius $r_c$ for the percolation of their continuum percolation models than spatially homogeneous point processes. It has already been shown, and we reaffirm it in this paper, that the $dcx$ ordering of point processes is suitable to compare their clustering tendencies. Hence, it was tempting to conjecture that $r_c$ is increasing in $dcx$ order. Some numerical evidences support this conjecture for a special class of point processes, called perturbed lattices, which are "toy models" for determinantal …
We examine the percolation model on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ by an approach involving lattice animals and their surface-area-to-volume ratio. For $β\in [0,2(d-1))$, let $f(β)$ be the asymptotic exponential rate in the number of edges of the number of lattice animals containing the origin which have surface-area-to-volume ratio $β$. The function $f$ is bounded above by a function which may be written in an explicit form. For low values of $β$ ($β\leq 1/p_c - 1$), equality holds, as originally demonstrated by F.Delyon. For higher values ($β> 1/p_c - 1$), the inequality is strict. We introduce two critical…
Let Z_N be the number of self-avoiding paths of length N starting from the origin on the infinite cluster obtained after performing Bernoulli percolation on Z^d with parameter p>p_c(Z^d). The object of this paper is to study the connective constant of the dilute lattice \limsup_{N\to \infty} Z_N^{1/N}, which is a non-random quantity. We want to investigate if the inequality \limsup_{N\to \infty} (Z_N)^{1/N} \le \lim_{N\to \infty} E[Z_N]^{1/N} obtained with the Borel-Cantelli Lemma is strict or not. In other words, we want to know the the quenched and annealed versions of the connective constan…
In 1991 Aizenman and Grimmett claimed that any `essential enhancement' of site or bond percolation on a lattice lowers the critical probability, an important result with many implications, such as strict inequalities between critical probabilities on suitable pairs of lattices. Their proof has two parts, one probabilistic and one combinatorial. In this paper we point out that a key combinatorial lemma, for which they provide only a figure as proof, is false. We prove an alternative form of the lemma, and thus the enhancement result, in the special cases of site percolation on the square, trian…
We consider a type of dependent percolation introduced by Aizenman and Grimmett, who showed that certain "enhancements" of independent (Bernoulli) percolation, called essential, make the percolation critical probability strictly smaller. In this paper we first prove that, for two-dimensional enhancements with a natural monotonicity property, being essential is also a necessary condition to shift the critical point. We then show that (some) critical exponents and the scaling limit of crossing probabilities of a two-dimensional percolation process are unchanged if the process is subjected to a m…
The star-triangle transformation is used to obtain an equivalence extending over the set of all (in)homogeneous bond percolation models on the square, triangular and hexagonal lattices. Among the consequences are box-crossing (RSW) inequalities for such models with parameter-values at which the transformation is valid. This is a step toward proving the universality and conformality of these processes. It implies criticality of such values, thereby providing a new proof of the critical point of inhomogeneous systems. The proofs extend to certain isoradial models to which previous methods do not…
Consider nearest-neighbor oriented percolation in $d+1$ space-time dimensions. Let $ρ,η,ν$ be the critical exponents for the survival probability up to time $t$, the expected number of vertices at time $t$ connected from the space-time origin, and the gyration radius of those vertices, respectively. We prove that the hyperscaling inequality $dν\geη+2ρ$, which holds for all $d\ge1$ and is a strict inequality above the upper-critical dimension 4, becomes an equality for $d=1$, i.e., $ν=η+2ρ$, provided existence of at least two among $ρ,η,ν$. The key to the proof is the recent result on the criti…
Bootstrap percolation on an arbitrary graph has a random initial configuration, where each vertex is occupied with probability p, independently of each other, and a deterministic spreading rule with a fixed parameter k: if a vacant site has at least k occupied neighbors at a certain time step, then it becomes occupied in the next step. This process is well-studied on Z^d; here we investigate it on regular and general infinite trees and on non-amenable Cayley graphs. The critical probability is the infimum of those values of p for which the process achieves complete occupation with positive pro…
We consider a class of random loop models (including the random interchange process) that are parametrised by a time parameter $β\geq 0$. Intuitively, larger $β$ means more randomness. In particular, at $β=0$ we start with loops of length 1 and as $β$ crosses a critical value $β_c$, infinite loops start to occur almost surely. Our random loop models admit a natural comparison to bond percolation with $p=1-e^{-β}$ on the same graph to obtain a lower bound on $β_c$. For those graphs of diverging vertex degree where $β_c$ and the critical parameter for percolation have been calculated explicitly,…
