We study the almost Daugavet property, a generalization of the Daugavet property. It is analysed what kind of subspaces and sums of Banach spaces with the almost Daugavet property have this property as well. The main result of the paper is: if $Z$ is a closed subspace of a separable almost Daugavet space $X$ such that the quotient space $X/Z$ contains no copy of $\ell_1$, then $Z$ has the almost Daugavet property, too.
Let $G$ be a metrizable, compact abelian group and let $Λ$ be a subset of its dual group $\hat G$. We show that $C_Λ(G)$ has the almost Daugavet property if and only if $Λ$ is an infinite set, and that $L^1_Λ(G)$ has the almost Daugavet property if and only if $Λ$ is not a $Λ(1)$ set.
We consider a general concept of Daugavet property with respect to a norming subspace. This concept covers both the usual Daugavet property and its weak$^*$ analogue. We introduce and study analogues for narrow operators and rich subspaces in this general setting and apply the results to show that a quotient of $L_1[0,1]$ over an $\ell_1$-subspace can fail the Daugavet property. The latter answers a question posed to us by A. Pelczynski in the negative.
Let $X$ be a Banach space. We introduce a formal approach which seems to be useful in the study of those properties of operators on $X$ which depend only on the norms of images of elements. This approach is applied to the Daugavet equation for norms of operators; in particular we develop a general theory of narrow operators and rich subspaces of $X$ previously studied in the context of the classical spaces $C(K)$ and $L_1(μ)$.
Let $G$ be an infinite, compact abelian group and let $\varLambda$ be a subset of its dual group $\varGamma$. We study the question which spaces of the form $C_\varLambda(G)$ or $L^1_\varLambda(G)$ and which quotients of the form $C(G)/C_\varLambda(G)$ or $L^1(G)/L^1_\varLambda(G)$ have the Daugavet property. We show that $C_\varLambda(G)$ is a rich subspace of $C(G)$ if and only if $\varGamma \setminus \varLambda^{-1}$ is a semi-Riesz set. If $L^1_\varLambda(G)$ is a rich subspace of $L^1(G)$, then $C_\varLambda(G)$ is a rich subspace of $C(G)$ as well. Concerning quotients, we prove that $C(…
Let X be a closed subspace of a Banach space Y and J be the inclusion map. We say that the pair (X,Y) has the Daugavet property if for every rank one bounded linear operator T from X to Y the following equality \|J+T\|=1+\|T\| holds. A new characterization of the Daugavet property in terms of weak open sets is given. It is shown that the operators not fixing copies of l_1 on a Daugavet pair satisfy the Daugavet equation. Some hereditary properties are found: if X is a Daugavet space and Y is its subspace, then Y is also a Daugavet space provided X/Y has the Radon-Nikodym property; if Y is refl…
We study those Banach spaces $X$ for which $S_X$ does not admit a finite $\eps$-net consisting of elements of $S_X$ for any $\eps < 2$. We give characterisations of this class of spaces in terms of $\ell_1$-type sequences and in terms of the almost Daugavet property. The main result of the paper is: a separable Banach space $X$ is isomorphic to a space from this class if and only if $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$.
An operator $G : \allowbreak X \to Y$ is said to be a Daugavet center if $\|G + T\| = \|G\| + \|T\|$ for every rank-1 operator $T : \allowbreak X \to Y$. The main result of the paper is: if $G : \allowbreak X \to Y$ is a Daugavet center, $Y$ is a subspace of a Banach space $E$, and $J: Y \to E$ is the natural embedding operator, then $E$ can be equivalently renormed in such a way, that $J \circ G : X \to E$ is also a Daugavet center. This result was previously known for particular case $X=Y$, $G=\mathrm{Id}$ and only in separable spaces. The proof of our generalization is based on an idea comp…
In contrast with the separable case, we prove that the existence of almost $L$-orthogonal vectors in a nonseparable Banach space $X$ (octahedrality) does not imply the existence of nonzero vectors in $X^{**}$ being $L$-orthogonal to $X$, which shows that the answer to an environment question in [9] is negative. Furthermore, we prove that the abundance of almost $L$-orthogonal vectors in a Banach space $X$ (almost Daugavet property) whose density character is $ω_1$ implies the abundance of nonzero vectors in $X^{**}$ being $L$-orthogonal to $X$. In fact, we get that a Banach space $X$ whose den…
A norm one element $x$ of a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (respectively, a $Δ$-point) if every slice of the unit ball (respectively, every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) contains an element, which is almost at distance 2 from $x$. We characterize Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in Lipschitz-free spaces. Furthermore, we construct a Lipschitz-free space with the Radon--Nikodým property and a Daugavet-point; this is the first known example of such a Banach space.
A norm one element $x$ of a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (respectively,~a $Δ$-point) if every slice of the unit ball (respectively,~every slice of the unit ball containing $x$) contains an element that is almost at distance 2 from $x$. We prove the equivalence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-points in spaces of Lipschitz functions over proper metric spaces and provide two characterizations for them. Furthermore, we show that in some spaces of Lipschitz functions, there exist $Δ$-points that are not Daugavet-points. Lastly, we prove that every space of Lipschitz functions over an infinite metric space…
A Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point) of a Banach space is a norm one element $x$ for which every point in the unit ball (resp.~element $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance 2 from $x$. A Banach space has the well-known Daugavet property (resp.~diametral local diameter 2 property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp.~$Δ$-point). This paper complements the article "Delta- and Daugavet-points in Banach spaces" by T. A. Abrahamsen, R. Haller, V. Lima, and K. Pirk, where the study of the existence of Daugavet- and $Δ$-po…
We study the existence of Daugavet- and delta-points in the unit sphere of Banach spaces with a $1$-unconditional basis. A norm one element $x$ in a Banach space is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point) if every element in the unit ball (resp. $x$ itself) is in the closed convex hull of unit ball elements that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. A Banach space has the Daugavet property (resp. diametral local diameter two property) if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point (resp. delta-point). It is well-known that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not have an uncon…
We investigate rich subspaces of $L_1$ and deduce an interpolation property of Sidon sets. We also present examples of rich separable subspaces of nonseparable Banach spaces and we study the Daugavet property of tensor products.
A $Δ$-point $x$ of a Banach space is a norm one element that is arbitrarily close to convex combinations of elements in the unit ball that are almost at distance $2$ from $x$. If, in addition, every point in the unit ball is arbitrarily close to such convex combinations, $x$ is a Daugavet-point. A Banach space $X$ has the Daugavet property if and only if every norm one element is a Daugavet-point. We show that $Δ$- and Daugavet-points are the same in $L_1$-spaces, $L_1$-preduals, as well as in a big class of Müntz spaces. We also provide an example of a Banach space where all points on the uni…
Let $X$ be a rearrangement-invariant space. An operator $T: X\to X$ is called narrow if for each measurable set $A$ and each $ε> 0$ there exists $x \in X$ with $x^2= χ_A, \int x d μ= 0$ and $\| Tx \| < ε$. In particular all compact operators are narrow. We prove that if $X$ is a Lorentz function space $L_{w,p}$ on [0,1] with $p>2$, then there exists a constant $k_X>1$ so that for every narrow projection $P$ on $L_{w,p}$ $\| Id - P \| \geq k_X. $ This generalizes earlier results on $L_p$ and partially answers a question of E. M. Semenov. Moreover we prove that every rearrangement-invariant func…
We prove that the Lipschitz-free space over a metric space M is locally almost square whenever M is a length space. Consequently, the Lipschitz-free space is locally almost square if and only if it has the Daugavet property. We also show that a Lipschitz-free space is never almost square.

Heinrich, Mankiewicz, Sims, and Yost proved that every separable subspace of a Banach space $Y$ is contained in a separable ideal in $Y$. We improve this result by replacing the term "ideal" with the term "almost isometric ideal". As a consequence of this we obtain, in terms of subspaces, characterizations of diameter 2 properties, the Daugavet property along with the properties of being an almost square space and an octahedral space.
A natural class of ideals, almost isometric ideals, of Banach spaces is defined and studied. The motivation for working with this class of subspaces is our observation that they inherit diameter 2 properties and the Daugavet property. Lindenstrauss spaces are known to be the class of Banach spaces that are ideals in every superspace; we show that being an almost isometric ideal in every superspace characterizes the class of Gurariy spaces.
We consider a certain type of geometric properties of Banach spaces, which includes for instance octahedrality, almost squareness, lushness and the Daugavet property. For this type of properties, we obtain a general reduction theorem, which, roughly speaking, states the following: if the property in question is stable under certain finite absolute sums (for example finite $\ell^p$-sums), then it is also stable under the formation of corresponding Köthe-Bochner spaces (for example $L^p$-Bochner spaces). From this general theorem, we obtain as corollaries a number of new results as well as some …
The main aim of this paper is to introduce and analyze the notions of subspace almost periodicity and subspace weak almost periodicity for $C$-distribution semigroups and $C$-distribution cosine functions in Banach spaces. We continue our previous research study of almost periodicity of abstract Volterra integro-differential equations \cite{aot}, focusing our attention on the abstract ill-posed Cauchy problems of first order.
In this article, we characterize nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the vector-valued Hardy space which is a vectorial generalization of a result of Chalendar-Gallardo-Partington (C-G-P). Using this characterization of nearly invariant subspace under the backward shift we completely describe the almost invariant subspaces for the shift and its adjoint acting on the vector valued Hardy space.
We show that any bounded operator $T$ on a separable, reflexive, infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$ admits a rank one perturbation which has an invariant subspace of infinite dimension and codimension. In the non-reflexive spaces, we show that the same is true for operators which have non-eigenvalues in the boundary of their spectrum. In the Hilbert space, our methods produce perturbations that are also small in norm, improving on an old result of Brown and Pearcy.
We give a new proof of a characterization of the closeness of the range of a continuous linear operator and of the closeness of the sum of two closed vector subspaces of a Banach space. Then we state sufficient conditions for the closeness of the sum of two closed subspaces of the Banach space of bounded functions and apply this result on various pseudo almost periodic spaces and pseudo almost automorphic spaces.
We analyze the ergodic properties of power-bounded operators on a reflexive Banach space of the form "scalar plus compact-power", and show that they are almost periodic (all the orbits are conditionally compact). If such an operator is weakly mixing, then it is stable (its powers converge in the strong operator topology).Let X-ISP be the separable reflexive indecomposable Banach space constructed by Argyros and Motakis, in which every operator has an invariant subspace. We conclude that every power-bounded operator on a closed subspace of X-ISP is almost periodic.
We introduce and study the following modified version of the Invariant Subspace Problem: whether every operator T on a Banach space has an almost invariant half-space, that is, a subspace Y of infinite dimension and infinite codimension such that Y is of finite codimension in T(Y). We solve this problem in the affirmative for a large class of operators which includes quasinilpotent weighted shift operators on l_p (1 \le p < \infty) or c_0.
In the almost periodic context, any $H_0^2-$space cannot be generated by one of its elements. Together with cocycle argument, this derives that there exist all kinds of invariant subspaces without single generator, from which we can answer some questions on invariant subspace theory.
A complete characterization of nearly-invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the Hardy space is provided in the spirit of Hitt and Sarason's theorem. As a corollary we describe the almost-invariant subspaces for the shift and its adjoint.
A closed subspace of a Banach space $\cX$ is almost-invariant for a collection $\cS$ of bounded linear operators on $\cX$ if for each $T \in \cS$ there exists a finite-dimensional subspace $\cF_T$ of $\cX$ such that $T \cY \subseteq \cY + \cF_T$. In this paper, we study the existence of almost-invariant subspaces of infinite dimension and codimension for various classes of Banach and Hilbert space operators. We also examine the structure of operators which admit a maximal commuting family of almost-invariant subspaces. In particular, we prove that if $T$ is an operator on a separable Hilbert s…
If $T$ is a bounded linear operator acting on an infinite-dimensional Banach space $X$, we say that a closed subspace $Y$ of $X$ of both infinite dimension and codimension is an almost-invariant halfspace (AIHS) under $T$ whenever $TY\subseteq Y+E$ for some finite-dimensional subspace $E$, or, equivalently, $(T+F)Y\subseteq Y$ for some finite-rank perturbation $F:X\to X$. We discuss the existence of AIHS's for various restrictions on $E$ and $F$ when $X$ is a complex Banach space. We also extend some of these and other results in the literature to the setting where $X$ is a real Banach space i…
We study $M$-ideals of compact operators by means of the property~$(M)$ introduced in \cite{Kal-M}. Our main result states for a separable Banach space $X$ that the space of compact operators on $X$ is an $M$-ideal in the space of bounded operators if (and only if) $X$ does not contain a copy of $\ell_{1}$, has the metric compact approximation property, and has property~$(M)$. The investigation of special versions of property~$(M)$ leads to results on almost isometric structure of some classes of Banach spaces. For instance, we give a simple necessary and sufficient condition for a Banach spac…
We introduce an unconditional concept of almost squareness in order to provide a partial negative answer to the problem of existence of any dual almost square Banach space. We also take advantage of this notion to provide some criterion of non-duality of some subspaces of scalar as well as vector valued Lipschitz functions.
Based on Bohr's equivalence relation which was established for general Dirichlet series, in this paper we introduce a new equivalence relation on the space of almost periodic functions in the sense of Besicovitch, $B(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C})$, defined in terms of polynomial approximations. From this, we show that in an important subspace $B^2(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C})\subset B(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C})$, where Parseval's equality and Riesz-Fischer theorem holds, its equivalence classes are sequentially compact and the family of translates of a function belonging to this subspace is dense in its own cl…
Let $M$ be a Hopf--von Neuman algebra with the predual $M_*$ and $WAP(M)$ the subspace in $M$ composed of weakly almost periodic functionals on $M_*$. The main example of such an algebra is $M=L^\infty(\mathbb G)$ for a locally compact quantum group $\mathbb G$. We define a pair of left/right spaces $WAP_{iso,l}(M)$ and $WAP_{iso,r}(M)$ inside $WAP(M)$ and prove that they carry invariant means. These spaces are currently the widest known to admit invariant means in the quantum setting. In the case when $M=L^\infty(G)$ and $G$ is a locally compact group, these spaces are equal to $WAP(G)$.
We give an explicit (in particular, deterministic polynomial time) construction of subspaces X of R^N of dimension (1-o(1))N such that for every element x in X, |x|_1 and N^{1/2} |x|_2 are equivalent up to a factor of (log N)^{log log log N}. If we are allowed to use N^{o(1)} random bits, this factor can be improved to poly(log N). Our construction makes use of unbalanced bipartite graphs to impose local linear constraints on vectors in the subspace, and our analysis relies on expansion properties of the graph. This is inspired by similar constructions of error-correcting codes.
Given a Banach space X and a bounded linear operator T on X, a subspace Y of X is almost invariant under T if TY is a subspace of Y+F for some finite-dimensional ``error'' F. In this paper, we study subspaces that are almost invariant under every operator in an algebra A of operators acting on X. We show that if A is norm closed then the dimensions of ``errors'' corresponding to operators in A must be uniformly bounded. Also, if A is generated by a finite number of commuting operators and has an almost invariant half-space (that is, a subspace with both infinite dimension and infinite codimens…
We study some structural aspects of the subspaces of the non-commutative (Haagerup) L_p-spaces associated with a general (non necessarily semi-finite) von Neumann algebra A. If a subspace X of L_p(A) contains uniformly the spaces \ell_p^n, n>= 1, it contains an almost isometric, almost 1-complemented copy of \ell_p. If X contains uniformly the finite dimensional Schatten classes S_p^n, it contains their \ell_p-direct sum too. We obtain a version of the classical Kadec-Pel czynski dichotomy theorem for L_p-spaces, p>= 2. We also give operator space versions of these results. The proofs are base…
We give a construction of Gabor type frames for suitable separable subspaces of the non-separable Hilbert spaces $AP_2({\mathbb R})$ of almost periodic functions of one variable. Furthermore we determine a non-countable generalized frame for the whole space $AP_2({\mathbb R}).$ We show furthermore that Bessel-type estimates hold for the $AP$ norm with respect to a countable Gabor system using suitable almost periodic norms of sequencies.
It has been known since 1970's that the N-dimensional $\ell_1$-space contains nearly Euclidean subspaces whose dimension is $Ω(N)$. However, proofs of existence of such subspaces were probabilistic, hence non-constructive, which made the results not-quite-suitable for subsequently discovered applications to high-dimensional nearest neighbor search, error-correcting codes over the reals, compressive sensing and other computational problems. In this paper we present a "low-tech" scheme which, for any $a > 0$, allows to exhibit nearly Euclidean $Ω(N)$-dimensional subspaces of $\ell_1^N$ while usi…
We show that every Müntz space can be written as a direct sum of Banach spaces X and Y , where Y is almost isometric to a subspace of c and X is finite dimensional. We apply this to show that no Müntz space is locally octahedral or almost square.
Following Davie's example of a Banach space failing the approximation property [D], we show how to construct a Banach space E which is asymptotically Hilbertian and fails the approximation property. Moreover, the space E is shown to be a subspace of a space with an unconditional basis which is ``almost'' a weak Hilbert space and which can be written as the direct sum of two subspaces all of whose subspaces have the approximation property.
Let $F$ be an ordered topological vector space (over $\mathbb{R}$) whose positive cone $F_+$ is weakly closed, and let $E \subseteq F$ be a subspace. We prove that the set of positive continuous linear functionals on $E$ that can be extended (positively and continuously) to $F$ is weak-$*$ dense in the topological dual wedge $E_+'$. Furthermore, we show that this result cannot be generalized to arbitrary positive operators, even in finite-dimensional spaces.
We introduce and study the notion of space of almost universal complemented disposition (a.u.c.d.) as a generalization of Kadec space. We show that every Banach space with separable dual is isometrically contained as a $1$-complemented subspace of a separable a.u.c.d. space and that all a.u.c.d. spaces with $1$-FDD are isometric and contain isometric $1$-complemented copies of every separable Banach space with $1$-FDD. We then study spaces of universal complemented disposition (u.c.d.) and provide different constructions for such spaces. We also consider spaces of u.c.d. with respect to separa…
