We report on the computation of the effective actions describing the interaction of gravity both for an abelian and a non-abelian gauge theory, mediated by the trace anomaly.
In order to treat loops in the Lorentz-violating QED model, we present a derivation of the QED axial anomaly that specifically highlights the infrared origin of the effect. This is done using dimensional regularization while treating $γ_5$ as a spectator. This enables us to revisit aspects in the fermionic sector of Lorentz-violating QED which have analogous structure to the axial anomaly. In particular, it is shown that both the Chern-Simons and photon mass operators are not induced in the one loop effective action. At lowest order in the Lorentz-violating parameter, we can define a non-relat…
We present the results of analytical calculations of the 3-loop contributions to the asymptotic photon vacuum polarization function, in the on shell scheme, and of the 4-loop contributions to the on shell QED beta-function. These are used to evaluate various 4-loop and 5-loop contributions to the muon anomaly. Our analytical contributions to (g-2)_μdiffer significantly from previous numerical results. A very recent numerical re-evaluation of 4-loop muon-anomaly contributions has yielded results much closer to ours.
The 1+1 dimensional massive Dirac equation is solved exactly in light-cone coordinates for $x^+ > 0$ and $x^- > -L$, in the presence of an arbitrary $x^+$ dependent electric field. Our solution resolves the ambiguity at $p^+ = 0$. We also obtain the one loop rate for pair production for a positive electric field, compute the expectation values of the vector and axial vector currents, and recover the well known anomaly $e^2 E/π$ in the divergence of the latter. A final intriguing result is that the theory seems to exhibit a phase transition in the limit of infinite $L$.
It is shown that a novel anomaly associated with transverse Ward-Takahashi identity exists for pseudo-tensor current in QED, and the anomaly gives rise to a topological index of Dirac operator in terms of Atiyah-Singer index theorem.
Through more detailed calculations on QED$_{1+1}$ and QED$_{3+1}$ emplying a new treatment of Feynman Amplitudes, we attribute the regularization independent and hence definite origin of chiral anomaly in perturbation theory to an unambiguous term which is a rational function in momentum space. Some relevant remarks are presented.
We present the estimates of the five-loop QED corrections to the muon anomaly using the scheme-invariant approaches and demonstrate that they are in good agreement with the results of exact calculations of the corresponding tenth-order diagrams supplemented by the additional guess about the values of the non-calculated contributions.
We discuss the derivation of the trace anomaly using a non-local effective action at one loop. This provides a simple and instructive form and emphasizes infrared physics. We then use this example to explore several of the properties of non-local actions, including displaying the action for the full non-local energy-momentum tensor. As an application, we show that the long-distance corrections at one loop lead to quantum violations of some classical consequences of the equivalence principle, for example producing a frequency dependence of the gravitational bending of light.
Parametrizing the possible underlying theory or new physics' decoupling effects in the most general way we reexamined the validity of canonical trace relation and chiral symmetry in certain one-loop two-point functions. The anomalies and the relation between chiral and trace Ward identities are investigated and interpreted in the perspective of a complete underlying theory or new physics instead of regularization, with some new phenomena found as by-products.
In this paper we compute the four-loop corrections to the QED photon self-energy Pi(Q^2) in the two limits of q=0 and Q^2->infinity. These results are used to explicitly construct the conversion relations between the QED charge renormalized in on-shell(OS) and MSbar scheme. Using these relations and results of Baikov et al. [1] we construct the momentum dependent part of Pi(Q^2,m,alpha) at large Q^2 at five loops in both MSbar and OS schemes. As a direct consequence we arrive at the full result for the QED beta-function in the OS scheme at five loops. These results are applied, in turn, to ana…
We consider $(3+1)$-dimensional, Dirac electrons of arbitrary mass, propagating in the presence of electric and magnetic fields which are both parallel to the $x^3$ axis. The magnetic field is constant in space and time whereas the electric field depends arbitrarily upon the light-cone time parameter $x^+ = (x^0 + x^3)/\sqrt{2}$. We present an explicit solution to the Heisenberg equations for the electron field operator in this background. The electric field results in the creation of electron-positron pairs. We compute the expectation values of the vector and axial vector currents in the pres…
The zitterbewegung being proportional to $\sin(εt)$, it is depicted as the motion of electron from the positive energy state to that of the negative energy and vice versa in the neighbourhood of Dirac point. Since such transition involves crossing the Dirac point, the same may be the possible realisation and measure of the zitterbewegung. In this respect, we draw a similirity between the zitterbewegung and the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly in (1+1) QED. In a time dependent perturbation theory, the embodiment of zitterbewegung is envisaged in the context of graphene.
We investigate the impact of the Adler-Bell-Jackiw anomaly on the nonequilibrium evolution of strong-field quantum electrodynamics (QED) using real-time lattice gauge theory techniques. For field strengths exceeding the Schwinger limit for pair production, we encounter a highly absorptive medium with anomaly-induced dynamical refractive properties. In contrast to earlier expectations based on equilibrium properties, where net anomalous effects vanish because of the trivial vacuum structure, we find that out-of-equilibrium conditions can have dramatic consequences for the presence of quantum cu…
The QED trace anomaly is calculated at one-loop level based on the loop regularization method which is realized in 4-dimensional spacetime and preserves gauge symmetry and Poincare symmetry in spite of the introduction of two mass scales, namely the ultraviolet (UV) cut-off $M_c$ and infrared (IR) cut-off $μ_s$. It is shown that the dilation Ward identity which relates the three-point diagrams with the vacuum polarization diagrams gets the standard form of trace anomaly through quantum corrections in taking the consistent limit $M_c\to \infty$ and $μ_s = 0$ which recovers the original integral…
We study the properties of the trace $\Tmm$ of the QED energy-momentum tensor in the presence of quasi-constant external electromagnetic fields. We exhibit the origin of $\Tmm$ in the quantum nonlinearity of the electromagnetic theory. We obtain the quantum vacuum fluctuation-induced interaction of a particle with the field of a strongly magnetized compact stellar object.
The trace anomaly of the energy-momentum tensor is usually quoted in the form which is proportional to the beta function of the theory. However, there are in general many definitions of gauge couplings depending on renormalization schemes, and hence many beta functions. In particular, N=1 supersymmetric pure Yang-Mills has the holomorphic gauge coupling whose beta function is one-loop exact, and the canonical gauge coupling whose beta function is given by the Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov beta function. In this paper, we study which beta function should appear in the trace anomaly in N=1…
We present a simple derivation of the one-loop trace anomaly in spinor QED through dispersion relations, avoiding completely any ultraviolet regularization. The anomaly can be expressed as a convergent sum rule for the imaginary part of a relevant formfactor. In the massless limit, the imaginary part produces a delta-function singularity at zero external momentum squared. Such a treatment reveals an "infrared face" of the trace anomaly, in striking similarity with the well-known case of the axial anomaly.
Concerning the trace anomaly in field theory a nonvanishing vacuum energy breaks the scale symmetry as well, in addition to the usual beta function dependent term, requiring a unit operator in the trace anomaly. This additional term is also necessary in quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to cancel the inherent ambiguity in the gluon condensate. The inseparability of the gluon condensate effect from the perturbative contribution to the vacuum energy renders it impossible to isolate the gluon condensate effect on the cosmological constant.
The contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment of the lepton $L$ ($L=e\ , μ$ or $τ$) generated by a specific class of QED diagrams are evaluated analytically up to the eighth order of the electromagnetic coupling constant. The considered class of the Feynman diagrams involves the vacuum polarization insertions into the electromagnetic vertex of the lepton $L$ up to three closed lepton loops. The corresponding analytical expressions are obtained as functions of the mass ratios $r=m_l/m_L$ in the whole region $0 < r < \infty$. Our consideration is based on a combined use of the dispersion re…
In anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking, superpartners in a hidden sector have masses that are proportional to couplings squared, and so naturally freeze out with the desired dark matter relic density for a large range of masses. We present an extremely simple realization of this possibility, with WIMPless dark matter arising from a hidden sector that is supersymmetric QED with N_F flavors. Dark matter is multi-component, composed of hidden leptons and sleptons with masses anywhere from 10 GeV to 10 TeV, and hidden photons provide the thermal bath. The dark matter self-interacts through hid…
An interesting class of background field configurations in QED are the O(2)xO(3) symmetric fields. Those backgrounds have some instanton-like properties and yield a one-loop effective action that is highly nontrivial but amenable to numerical calculation, for both scalar and spinor QED. Here we use the recently developed "partial-wave-cutoff method" for a numerical analysis of both effective actions in the full mass range. In particular, at large mass we are able to match the asymptotic behavior of the physically renormalized effective action against the leading two mass levels of the inverse …
Quantum fluctuations lead to an anomalous violation of parity symmetry in quantum electrodynamics for an even number of spatial dimensions. While the leading parity-odd electric current vanishes in vacuum, we uncover a non-cancellation of the anomaly for strong electric fields with distinct macroscopic signatures. We perform real-time lattice simulations with fully dynamical gauge fields and Wilson fermions in $2+1$ space-time dimensions. In the static field limit, relevant at early times, we solve the problem analytically. Our results point out the fundamental role of quantum anomalies for st…
We review briefly some well known facts about trace anomaly and then concentrate on its 'infrared' manifestation. Among other things we show by means of dispersion relations that dilatations and translations are conflicting symmetries. We discuss the occurrence of some subtraction constants in convergent dispersion relations and illustrate it on the decay process of Higgs to two photons in the electroweak theory.
The problem of estimating the 10th order QED corrections to the muon anomalous magnetic moment is reconsidered. The incorporation of the recently improved contributions to the $α^4$ and $α^5$- corrections to $a_μ$ within the renormalization-group inspired scheme-invariant approach leads to the estimate $a_μ^{(10)}\approx 643(α/pi)^5$. It is in good agreement with the estimate $a_μ^{(10)}= 663(20) (α/π)^5$, obtained by Kinoshita and Nio from the numerical calculations of 2958 10-th order diagrams, which are considered to be more important than the still uncalculated 6122 10th-order $m_μ/m_e$-de…
The triangle anomaly in massless and massive QED is investigated by adopting the symmetry-preserving loop regularization method proposed recently in \cite{LR}. The method is realized in the initial dimension of theory without modifying the original lagrangian, it preserves symmetries under non-Abelian gauge and Poincare transformations in spite of the existence of two intrinsic mass scales $M_c$ and $μ_s$ which actually play the roles of UV- and IR-cut off respectively. The axialvector-vector-vector (AVV) triangle diagrams in massless and massive QED are evaluated explicitly by using the loop …
We study relation between Chiral Separation Effect (CSE) and Chiral Anomaly, and argue that CSE does not inherit the immutability of Chiral Anomaly. For QED in the leading order in electric charge, with point-splitting regularization in real-time formalism, we demontrate, in regularization-dependent way though, that CSE is an infrared (IR) effect, while the Anomaly is an ultra-violet (UV) phenomena. Thus, CSE in general is sensitive to non-perturbative interactions that alter the theory IR properties, while the Anomaly is fixed by Lorentz symmetry. The simplest example of such an interaction i…
Within the framework of effective action QED, we derive the light cone condition for homogeneous non-trivial QED vacua in the geometric optics approximation. Our result generalizes the ``unified formula'' suggested by Latorre, Pascual and Tarrach and allows for the calculation of velocity shifts and refractive indices for soft photons travelling through these vacua. Furthermore, we clarify the connection between the light velocity shift and the scale anomaly. This study motivates the introduction of a so-called effective action charge that characterizes the velocity modifying properties of the…
The trace anomaly is relevant to the renormalisation of the unpolarised parton distributions. The role of the trace anomaly in F_2 is compared with the axial anomaly in g_1.
We find an exact coordinate transformation rule from the $AdS_5$ Schwarzschild black hole in the Poincare and the global patch to the Fefferman-Graham coordinate system. Using these results, we evaluate the corresponding holographic stress tensor and trace anomaly of the boundary theory as a function of the radial coordinate. Following the AdS/CFT correspondence, we reinterpret the radial coordinate dependence of the trace anomaly as the Wilsonian renormalization group(RG) flow of the boundary theory.
The QCD + QED axial anomaly low-energy theorems are applied to estimate the accuracy of an instanton vacuum - based chiral quark model. The low-energy theorems give an exact relation between the matrix elements of the gluon and photon parts of the QCD + QED axial anomaly operator equation. The matrix elements between vacuum and two photon states and between vacuum and two gluon states are calculated for arbitrary N_f. It is shown that this model does satisfy the low-energy theorems with an accuracy of $\sim 17%$. We estimate also the contribution of the nonperturbative conversion of gluons int…
We report on two recent multiloop results in QED: (i) the four-loop corrections to the conversion relations between the QED charge renormalized in the on-shell and MS-bar schemes; (ii) analytical evaluation of a class of asymptotic contributions to the muon anomaly at five-loops.
We compute trace anomaly contribution to hydrogen atom mass, which turns out to be related to the part of the Lamb shift. This finding might shed new light on our understandings of the mass structure of QCD bound states, such as, proton.
We examine the contribution of W boson loops to the amplitude of the process H --> γγwithin the dispersion relation approach, taking up an issue raised in this context recently. We show that the non-vanishing limit of the relevant formfactor for mW --> 0 is due to a finite subtraction induced by the value of the corresponding trace anomaly. The argument can be truned around and one thus arrives at a dispersive ("infrared") derivation of the trace anomaly.
We explore trace-anomaly driven inflation in modified gravity. It is explicitly shown that in $T^2$ teleparallel gravity, the de Sitter inflation can occur, although quasi de Sitter inflation happens in $R^2$ gravity. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of the trace anomaly on inflation. It is found that in $f(T)$ gravity, the de Sitter inflation can end because it becomes unstable due to the trace anomaly, whereas also in higher derivative gravity, the de Sitter inflation can be realized and it will be over thanks to the trace anomaly for smaller parameter regions in comparison with tho…
Exact relations between the QCD thermal pressure and the trace anomaly are derived. These are used, first, to prove the equivalence of the thermodynamic and the hydrodynamic pressure in equilibrium in the presence of the trace anomaly, closing a gap in previous arguments. Second, in the temporal axial gauge a formula is derived which expresses the thermal pressure in terms of a Dyson-resummed two-point function. This overcomes the infrared problems encountered in the conventional perturbation-theory approach.
Recently, we developed an effective theory of pions and a light dilatonic meson for gauge theories with spontaneously broken chiral symmetry that are close to the conformal window. The pion mass term in this effective theory depends on an exponent $y$. We derive the transformation properties under dilatations of the renormalized fermion mass, and use this to rederive $y=3-γ_m^*$, where $γ_m^*$ is fixed-point value of the mass anomalous dimension at the sill of the conformal window. This value for $y$ is consistent with the trace anomaly of the underlying near-conformal gauge theory.
We show that, in dimensional reguralization in the minimal subtraction scheme, the QCD trace anomaly can be unambiguously decomposed into two parts coming from the renormalized quark and gluon energy momentum tensors. We carry out this decomposition at the two-loop level. The result can be used to constrain the renormalization group properties of the nucleon's twist-four gravitational form factor $\bar{C}_{q,g}$.
The trace anomaly term in the low energy chiral Lagrangian is established by deriving a low energy theorem for $γγ\rightarrow π^0π^0$ scattering. It contributes to $σ(γγ\rightarrow π^0π^0)$ in the same order as the previously computed pion loop contribution. The coherent sum of the two contributions explains the shape of the measured cross section, while the magnitude is determined by the anomalous dimension of the quark mass operator.
The trace anomaly of gluodynamics on the lattice shows clear fingerprints of a dimension two condensate above the phase transition. The condensate manifests itself through even powers of the inverse temperature while the total perturbative contribution corresponds to a mild temperature dependence and turns out to be compatible with zero within errors. We try several resummation methods based on a renormalization group improvement. The trace anomaly data are analyzed and compared with other determinations of the dimension two condensate based on the Polyakov loop and the heavy qq free energy, y…
Finding out universal conditions describing the freeze-out parameters was a subject of various phenomenological studies. In the present work, we introduce a new condition based on constant trace anomaly (or interaction measure) calculated in the hadron resonance gas (HRG) model. Various extensions to the {\it ideal} HRG which are conjectured to take into consideration different types of interactions have been analysed. When comparing HRG thermodynamics to that of lattice quantum chromodynamics, we conclude that the hard-core radii are practically irrelevant, especially when HRG includes all re…
The dimension two gluon condensate has been used previously within a simple phenomenological model to describe power corrections from available lattice data for the renormalized Polyakov loop and the heavy quark-antiquark free energy in the deconfined phase of QCD (hep-ph/0505215,hep-ph/0702055). The QCD trace anomaly of gluodynamics also shows unequivocal inverse temperature power corrections which may be encoded as dimension two gluon condensate. We analyze lattice data of the trace anomaly and compare with other determinations of the condensate from previous references, yielding roughly sim…
The trace anomalous energy contribution to the proton mass is a very important topic in non-perturbative QCD and hadron physics. In experiments, it is under the hot discussions on how to measure the trace anomalous energy. The QCD interpretation of proton trace anomaly is still not clear. To connect the theory with the experiment,we extract the trace anomaly by analyzing the near-threshold photo-production data of $ϕ$ and J/$ψ$ vector mesons. Based on the vector-meson-dominance model and QCD Van der Waals representation, we find that the percentage of trace anomaly in the proton mass ranges from…
In the scalar $ϕ^4$ field model the dispersive approach to the trace anomaly is proposed. It is shown that it is impossible to get dispersion representation for all formfactors so that preserve both the translation and dilatation Ward identities. Subtractions which preserve energy-momentum conservation violate the classical trace Ward--Takahashi identity and give rise to an anomalous contribution to the matrix element of stress tensor $θ_μ^ν$. This contribution coincides with one-loop $β$-function in accordance with previous analyses based on RG technique.
In vacuum, in the chiral limit the coupling of a pion to two on-shell photons is directly related to the coefficient of the axial anomaly in QED. This relationship is lost at any nonzero temperature. Explicit calculations show that the coupling decreases with temperature and vanishes at Tc, the temperature of chiral symmetry restoration.
The QCD anomaly coupling of $η'-g-g$ is treated as the axial vector current triangle anomaly. By assuming the divergent axial vector coupling of the $η'$ meson with the quark line in the triangle diagram, we calculate the QCD anomaly of $η'-g-g$ as well as the QED anomaly of $η'-γ-γ$ with only one common parameter $κ_{η'}$. We obtain consistent results of the branching ratios for $B\toη' X_s, J/ψ\toη'γ$ and $η'\to γγ$ when comparing with experimental data.
We discuss an interpretation that a peak in the sound velocity in neutron star matter, as suggested by the observational data, signifies strongly-coupled conformal matter. The normalized trace anomaly is a dimensionless measure of conformality leading to the derivative and the non-derivative contributions to the sound velocity. We find that the peak in the sound velocity is attributed to the derivative contribution from the trace anomaly that steeply approaches the conformal limit. Smooth continuity to the behavior of high-density QCD implies that the matter part of the trace anomaly may be po…
We build the electromagnetic trace anomaly effective term for a generalized linear sigma model with two chiral nonets, one with a quark-antiquark structure, the other one with a four quark content. In the leading order of this framework, we study the decays into two photons of the lowest isosinglet scalar mesons. We find that the direct inclusion of underlying mixing among two- and four-quark components in the trace anomaly term is essential in order for the model prediction to agree with the available experimental data on decay width of $f_0(980)$ to two photons. Consequently, this sets a low…
In the quantum chromodynamics, the mass source of the proton is decomposed into four parts by the energy momentum tensor : quark energy term, gluon energy term, quark mass term and trace anomaly term. And the trace anomaly term is the most crucial contribution for studying the internal structure of the proton. In this work, under the definition of the vector meson dominant model, the trace anomaly contribution of the proton is extracted from the experimental datas of light vector mesons $ρ$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ photoproduction at the near-threshold, which are ($1.15\pm0.08$)$\%$, ($2.70\pm0.04$)$\%$ a…

The interaction of QCD and electroweak sector with gravity is characterized by the generation of a massless pole in a specific form factor present in the 1-loop effective action. We briefly illustrate how to single out this behaviour in perturbation theory, by taking as an example the $TJJ$ vertex, with $T$ denoting the energy momentum tensor of the Standard Model. The breaking of scale invariance, due to the trace anomaly, is then related to the appearance of a local degree of freedom in the effective action, which is of dilaton type.
