In this paper we study monomial ideals attached to posets, introduce generalized Hibi rings and investigate their algebraic and homological properties. The main tools to study these objects are Groebner basis theory, the concept of sortability due to Sturmfels and the theory of weakly polymatroidal ideals.
In this paper we consider Hibi rings and Rees rings attached to a poset. We classify the ideal lattices of posets whose Hibi relations are indispensable and the ideal lattices of posets whose Hibi relations form a quadratic Groebner basis with respect to the rank lexicographic order. Similar classifications are obtained for Rees rings of Hibi ideals.
Stanley introduced two classes of lattice polytopes associated to posets, which are called the order polytope ${\mathcal O}_P$ and the chain polytope ${\mathcal C}_P$ of a poset $P$. It is known that, given a poset $P$, the Ehrhart polynomials of ${\mathcal O}_P$ and ${\mathcal C}_P$ are equal to the order polynomial of $P$ that counts the $P$-partitions. In this paper, we introduce the enriched order polytope of a poset $P$ and show that it is a reflexive polytope whose Ehrhart polynomial is equal to that of the enriched chain polytope of $P$ and the left enriched order polynomial of $P$ that…
We introduce pseudo-Gorenstein rings and characterize those Hibi rings attached to a finite distributive lattice L which are pseudo-Gorenstein. The characterization is given in terms of the poset of join-irreducible elements of L. We also present a necessary condition for Hibi rings to be level. Special attention is given to planar and hyper-planar lattices. Finally the pseudo-Goresntein and level property of Hibi rings and generalized Hibi rings is compared with each other.
We exhibit several posets arising from commutative algebra, order theory, tropical convexity as potential face posets of tropical polyhedra, and we clarify their inclusion relations. We focus on monomial tropical polyhedra, and deduce how their geometry reflects properties of monomial ideals. Their vertex-facet lattice is homotopy equivalent to a sphere and encodes the Betti numbers of an associated monomial ideal.
Given a monomial ideal $I$ with minimal free resolution $\mathcal{F}$ supported in characteristic $p>0$ on a CW-complex $X$ with regular $2$-skeleton, we construct a CW-complex $Y$ that also supports~$\mathcal{F}$ and such that the face poset $P(Y)$ also supports $\mathcal{F}$ in the sense of Clark and Tchernev.
For the toric variety X associated to the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian, we describe the singular locus in terms of the faces of the associated polyhedral cone. We also determine the tangent cones at the maximal singularities of X. These turn out to be again toric varieties. In the case of X being associated to the Bruhat poset of Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian of 2-planes in a n-dimensional vector space (over the base field), we also prove a certain product formula relating the multiplicities at certain singular points.
Let $P$ be a finite partially ordered set with unique minimal element $\hat{0}$. We study the Betti poset of $P$, created by deleting elements $q\in P$ for which the open interval $(\hat{0}, q)$ is acyclic. Using basic simplicial topology, we demonstrate an isomorphism in homology between open intervals of the form $(\hat{0},p)\subset P$ and corresponding open intervals in the Betti poset. Our motivating application is that the Betti poset of a monomial ideal's lcm-lattice encodes both its $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$-graded Betti numbers and the structure of its minimal free resolution. In the case of ri…
In 1999 Herzog and Hibi introduced componentwise linear ideals. A homogeneous ideal $I$ is componentwise linear if for all non-negative integers $d$, the ideal generated by the homogeneous elements of degree $d$ in $I$ has a linear resolution. For square-free monomial ideals, componentwise linearity is related via Alexander duality to the property of being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay for the corresponding simplicial complexes. In general, the property of being componentwise linear is not preserved by taking powers. In 2011, Herzog, Hibi, and Ohsugi conjectured that if $I$ is the cover ideal of…
The main goal of this paper is to give explicit descriptions of two maximal cones in the Gröbner fan of the Plücker ideal. These cones correspond to the monomial ideals given by semistandard and PBW-semistandard Young tableaux. For the first cone, as an intermediate result we obtain the description of a maximal cone in the Gröbner fan of any Hibi ideal. For the second, we generalize the notion of Hibi ideals by associating an ideal with every interpolating polytope. This is a family of polytopes that generalizes the order and chain polytopes of a poset (à la Fang--Fourier--Litza--Pegel). We th…
In this article we prove that every toric ideal associated with a gap-free graph $G$ has a squarefree lexicographic initial ideal. Moreover, in the particular case when the complementary graph of $G$ is chordal (i.e. when the edge ideal of $G$ has a linear resolution), we show that there exists a reduced Gröbner basis $\mathcal{G}$ of the toric ideal of $G$ such that all the monomials in the support of $\mathcal{G}$ are squarefree. Finally, we show (using work by Herzog and Hibi) that if $I$ is a monomial ideal generated in degree 2, then $I$ has a linear resolution if and only if all powers o…
We use the natural homeomorphism between a regular CW-complex X and its face poset P_X to establish a canonical isomorphism between the cellular chain complex of X and the result of applying the poset construction of arXiv:0806.4532v1 to P_X. For a monomial ideal whose free resolution is supported on a regular CW-complex, this isomorphism allows the free resolution of the ideal to be realized as a CW-poset resolution. Conversely, any CW-poset resolution of a monomial ideal gives rise to a resolution supported on a regular CW-complex.
We introduce the notion of a \emph{resolution supported on a poset}. When the poset is a CW-poset, i.e. the face poset of a regular CW-complex, we recover the notion of cellular resolution as introduced by Bayer and Sturmfels. Work of Reiner and Welker, and of Velasco, has shown that there are monomial ideals whose minimal free resolutions are not cellular, hence cannot be supported on any CW-poset. We show that for any monomial ideal there is a \emph{homology CW-poset} that supports a minimal free resolution of the ideal. This allows one to extend to every minimal resolution, essentially verb…
We introduce the class of lattice-linear monomial ideals and use the LCM-lattice to give an explicit construction for their minimal free resolution. The class of lattice-linear ideals includes (among others) the class of monomial ideals with linear free resolution and the class of Scarf monomial ideals. Our main tool is a new construction by Tchernev that produces from a map of posets $η:P\lra\mbb{N}^n$ a sequence of multigraded modules and maps.
The support poset of a monomial ideal $I\subseteq\mathbf{k}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ encodes the relation between the variables $x_1,\dots,x_n$ and the minimal monomial generators of $I$. It is known that not every poset is realizable as the support poset of some monomial ideal. We describe some posets $P$ for which we can explicitly find at least one monomial ideal $I_P$ such that $P$ is the support poset of $I_P$. Also, for some families of monomial ideals we describe their support posets and study their properties. As an example of application we examine the relation between forests and series-paral…
The main objects of the present paper are (i) Hibi rings (toric rings arising from order polytopes of posets), (ii) stable set rings (toric rings arising from stable set polytopes of perfect graphs), and (iii) edge rings (toric rings arising from edge polytopes of graphs satisfying the odd cycle condition). The goal of the present paper is to analyze those three toric rings and to discuss their structures in the case where their class groups have small rank. We prove that the class groups of (i), (ii) and (iii) are torsionfree. More precisely, we give descriptions of their class groups. Moreov…
We consider path ideals associated to special classes of posets such as tree posets and cycles. We express their property of being sequentially Cohen-Macaulay in terms of the underlying poset. Moreover, monomial ideals, which arise from the Luce-decomposable model in algebraic statistics, can be viewed as path ideals of certain posets. We study invariants of these so-called \emph{Luce-decomposable} monomial ideals for diamond posets and products of chains. In particular, for these classes of posets, we explicitly compute their Krull dimension, their projective dimension, their regularity and t…
For a pair $(P,Q)$ of finite posets the generators of the ideal $L(P,Q)$ correspond bijectively to the isotone maps from $P$ to $Q$. In this note we determine all pairs $(P,Q)$ for which the Alexander dual of $L(P,Q)$ coincides with $L(Q,P)$, up to a switch of the indices.
For any finite poset $P$ we have the poset of isotone maps $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, also called $P^{op}$-partitions. To any poset ideal ${\mathcal J}$ in $\text{Hom}(P,\mathbb{N})$, finite or infinite, we associate monomial ideals: the letterplace ideal $L({\mathcal J},P)$ and the Alexander dual co-letterplace ideal $L(P,{\mathcal J})$, and study them. We derive a class of monomial ideals in $k[x_p, p \in P]$ called $P$-stable. When $P$ is a chain we establish a duality on strongly stable ideals. We study the case when ${\mathcal J}$ is a principal poset ideal. When $P$ is a chain we constr…
Squarefree monomial ideals arising from finite meet-semilattices and their free resolutions are studied. For the squarefree monomial ideals corresponding to poset ideals in a distributive lattice the Alexander dual is computed.

We investigate Gröbner bases of contraction ideals under some monomial homomorphisms. As an application of our theorem, we generalize the result of Aoki--Hibi--Ohsugi--Takemura and Hibi-Ohsugi. Using our results, one can provide many examples of toric ideals that admit square-free or quadratic initial ideals.
The main result of this paper is that all antichains are finite in the poset of monomial ideals in a polynomial ring, ordered by inclusion. We present several corollaries of this result, both simpler proofs of results already in the literature and new results. One natural generalization to more abstract posets is shown to be false.
We introduce to the context of multigraded modules the methods of modules over categories from algebraic topology and homotopy theory. We develop the basic theory quite generally, with a view toward future applications to a wide class of graded modules over graded rings. The main application in this paper is to study the Betti poset B=B(I,k) of a monomial ideal I in the polynomial ring R=k[x_1,...,x_m] over a field k, which consists of all degrees in Z^m of the homogeneous basis elements of the free modules in the minimal free Z^m-graded resolution of I over R. We show that the order simplicia…
We show that a monomial ideal $I$ has projective dimension $\leq$ 1 if and only if the minimal free resolution of $S/I$ is supported on a graph that is a tree. This is done by constructing specific graphs which support the resolution of the $S/I$. We also provide a new characterization of quasi-trees, which we use to give a new proof to a result by Herzog, Hibi, and Zheng which characterizes monomial ideals of projective dimension 1 in terms of quasi-trees.
Given finite posets $P$ and $Q$, we consider a specific ideal $L(P,Q)$, whose minimal monomial generators correspond to order-preserving maps $ϕ:P\rightarrow Q$. We study algebraic invariants of those ideals. In particular, sharp lower and upper bounds for the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity and the projective dimension are provided. Precise formulas are obtained for a large subclass of these ideals. Moreover, we provide complete characterizations for several algebraic properties of $L(P,Q)$, including being Buchsbaum, Cohen-Macaulay, Gorenstein and having a linear resolution. We also give a pa…
We use the theory of poset resolutions to construct the minimal free resolution of an arbitrary stable monomial ideal in the polynomial ring whose coefficients are from a field. This resolution is recovered by utilizing a poset of Eliahou-Kervaire admissible symbols associated to a stable ideal. The structure of the poset under consideration is quite rich and in related analysis, we exhibit a regular CW complex which supports a minimal cellular resolution of a stable monomial ideal.
To a natural number $n$, a finite partially ordered set $P$ and a poset ideal ${\mathcal J}$ in the poset $Hom(P,[n])$ of isotonian maps from $P$ to the chain on $n$ elements, we associate two monomial ideals, the letterplace ideal $L(n,P;{\mathcal J})$ and the co-letterplace ideal $L(P,n;{\mathcal J})$. These ideals give a unified understanding of a number of ideals studied in monomial ideal theory in recent years. By cutting down these ideals by regular sequences of variable differences we obtain: multichain ideals and generalized Hibi type ideals, initial ideals of determinantal ideals, str…
To a pair $P$ and $Q$ of finite posets we attach the toric ring $K[P,Q]$ whose generators are in bijection to the isotone maps from $P$ to $Q$. This class of algebras, called isotonian, are natural generalizations of the so-called Hibi rings. We determine the Krull dimension of these algebras and for particular classes of posets $P$ and $Q$ we show that $K[P,Q]$ is normal and that their defining ideal admits a quadratic Gröbner basis.
Let (P,<) be a finite poset and let G be its comparability graph. If cl(G) is the clutter of maximal cliques of G, we prove that cl(G) satisfies the max-flow min-cut property and that its edge ideal is normally torsion free. We prove that edge ideals of complete admissible uniform clutters are normally torsion free. The normality of a monomial ideal is expressed in terms of blocking polyhedra and the integer decomposition property. For edge ideals of clutters this property completely determine their normality
We introduce the notion of a Betti-linear monomial ideal, which generalizes the notion of lattice-linear monomial ideal introduced by Clark. We provide a characterization of Betti-linearity in terms of Tchernev's poset construction. As an application we obtain an explicit canonical construction for the minimal free resolutions of monomial ideals having pure resolutions.
Fix a poset $Q$ on $\{x_1,\ldots,x_n\}$. A $Q$-Borel monomial ideal $I \subseteq \mathbb{K}[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ is a monomial ideal whose monomials are closed under the Borel-like moves induced by $Q$. A monomial ideal $I$ is a principal $Q$-Borel ideal, denoted $I=Q(m)$, if there is a monomial $m$ such that all the minimal generators of $I$ can be obtained via $Q$-Borel moves from $m$. In this paper we study powers of principal $Q$-Borel ideals. Among our results, we show that all powers of $Q(m)$ agree with their symbolic powers, and that the ideal $Q(m)$ satisfies the persistence property for …
For a graph G, we construct two algebras, whose dimensions are both equal to the number of spanning trees of G. One of these algebras is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain monomial ideal, while the other is the quotient of the polynomial ring modulo certain powers of linear forms. We describe the set of monomials that forms a linear basis in each of these two algebras. The basis elements correspond to G-parking functions that naturally came up in the abelian sandpile model. These ideals are instances of the general class of monotone monomial ideals and their deformations. We sh…
Let $J\subset I$ be monomial ideals. We show that the Stanley depth of $I/J$ can be computed in a finite number of steps. We also introduce the $\fdepth$ of a monomial ideal which is defined in terms of prime filtrations and show that it can also be computed in a finite number of steps. In both cases it is shown that these invariants can be determined by considering partitions of suitable finite posets into intervals.
We prove a theorem unifying three results from combinatorial homological and commutative algebra, characterizing the Koszul property for incidence algebras of posets and affine semigroup rings, and characterizing linear resolutions of squarefree monomial ideals. The characterization in the graded setting is via the Cohen-Macaulay property of certain posets or simplicial complexes, and in the more general nongraded setting, via the sequential Cohen-Macaulay property.
We use the lcm-lattice of a monomial ideal to study its minimal free resolutions. A new concept called a Taylor basis of a minimal free resolution is introduced and then used throughout the paper. We give a method of constructing minimal free resolutions of a monomial ideal from its lcm-lattice, which is called the atomic lattice resolution theory. Some applications of this theory is given. As the main application, we rewrite the theory of poset resolutions, and we obtain an approximation formula for minimal free resolutions of all monomial ideals.
We introduce the notion of Q-Borel ideals: ideals which are closed under the Borel moves arising from a poset Q. We study decompositions and homological properties of these ideals, and offer evidence that they interpolate between Borel ideals and arbitrary monomial ideals.
In this paper we investigate the class of rigid monomial ideals. We give a characterization of the minimal free resolutions of certain classes of these ideals. Specifically, we show that the ideals in a particular subclass of rigid monomial ideals are lattice-linear and thus their minimal resolution can be constructed as a poset resolution. We then use this result to give a description of the minimal free resolution of a larger class of rigid monomial ideals by using $\mathcal{L}(n)$, the lattice of all lcm-lattices of monomial ideals with $n$ generators. By fixing a stratum in $\mathcal{L}(n)…
We consider profunctors $f : P \promap Q$ between posets and introduce their {\em graph} and {\em ascent}. The profunctors $\Pro(P,Q)$ form themselves a poset, and we consider a partition $\cI \sqcup \cF$ of this into a down-set $\cI$ and up-set $\cF$, called a {\it cut}. To elements of $\cF$ we associate their graphs, and to elements of $\cI$ we associate their ascents. Our basic result is that this, suitable refined, preserves being a cut: We get a cut in the Boolean lattice of subsets of the underlying set of $Q \times P$. Cuts in finite Booleans lattices correspond precisely to finite simp…
We introduce the notion of Betti category for graded modules over suitably graded polynomial rings, and more generally for modules over certain small categories. Our categorical approach allows us to treat simultaneously many important cases, such as monomial ideals and toric rings. We prove that in these cases the Betti category is a finite combinatorial object that completely determines the structure of the minimal free resolution. For monomial ideals, the Betti category is the same as the Betti poset that we studied in a previous article. We describe in detail and with examples how the theo…
We recall a numerical criteria for Cohen--Macaulayness related to system of parameters, and introduce monomial ideals of König type which include the edge ideals of König graphs. We show that a monomial ideal is of König type if and only if its corresponding residue class ring admits a system of parameters whose elements are of the form $x_i-x_j$. This provides an algebraic characterization of König graphs. We use this special parameter systems for the study of the edge ideal of König graphs and the study of the order complex of a certain family of posets. Finally, for any simplicial complex $…
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero and I an ideal defining an arrangement of linear subspaces in the affine space $A^n_k$. We compute the D-module theoretic characteristic cycle of the local cohomology modules $H^r_I(k[x_1,...,x_n])$ in terms of the poset defined by the arrangement. In case I is a monomial ideal, we relate the multiplicities of the characteristic cycle with the Betti numbers of the Alexander dual ideal of I, we also study some extension problems attached to the modules $H^r_I(k[x_1,...,x_n])$. If $k$ is the field of complex numbers we study the ubiquity of these local c…
In this paper, we study the basic problem of counting independent sets in a graph and, in particular, the problem of counting antichains in a finite poset, from an algebraic perspective. We show that neither independence polynomials of bipartite Cohen-Macaulay graphs nor Hilbert series of initial ideals of radical zero-dimensional complete intersections ideals, can be evaluated in polynomial time, unless #P=P. Moreover, we present a family of radical zero-dimensional complete intersection ideals J_P associated to a finite poset P, for which we describe a universal Gröbner basis. This implies t…
Inspired by the notion of König graphs we introduce graded ideals of König type with respect to a monomial order $<$. It is shown that if $I$ is of König type, then the Cohen--Macaulay property of $\ini_<(I)$ does not depend on the characteristic of the base field. This happens to be the case also for $I$ itself when $I$ is a binomial edge ideal. Attached to an ideal of König type is a sequence of linear forms, whose elements are variables or differences of variables. This sequence is a system of parameters for $\ini_<(I)$, and is a potential system of parameters for $I$ itself. We study in de…
The join-meet ideal was introduced by Takayuki Hibi in 1987. It is binomial ideals that are defined by finite lattices. We study the join-meet ideal of non-distributive finite lattices that do not always satisfy modular. In particular, we work on the case of Crystal lattice which is one of them. In this paper, we give the computational result of a total of each of the 1-th and 2-th of grade Betti numbers of the join-meet ideal of a special Crystal lattice. The important point about this result is that it is characterized by the number of combinations of special generators. Moreover, we can con…
We consider ideals arising in the context of conditional independence models that generalize the class of ideals considered by Fink [7] in a way distinct from the generalizations of Herzog-Hibi-Hreinsdottir-Kahle-Rauh [13] and Ay-Rauh [1]. We introduce switchable sets to give a combinatorial description of the minimal prime ideals, and for some classes we describe the minimal components. We discuss many possible interpretations of the ideals we study, including as 2 \times 2 minors of generic hypermatrices. We also introduce a definition of diagonal monomial orders on generic hypermatrices and…
An order ideal is a finite poset X of (monic) monomials such that, whenever M is in X and N divides M, then N is in X. If all, say t, maximal monomials of X have the same degree, then X is pure (of type t). A pure O-sequence is the vector, h=(1,h_1,...,h_e), counting the monomials of X in each degree. Equivalently, in the language of commutative algebra, pure O-sequences are the h-vectors of monomial Artinian level algebras. Pure O-sequences had their origin in one of Richard Stanley's early works in this area, and have since played a significant role in at least three disciplines: the study o…
