C18O spectral line observations, NIR spectrosopy, narrow and broad band NIR imaging and stellar J,H,Ks photometry are used to analyse the structure of the archetype cometary globule 1 (CG 1) head and the extinction of stars in its direction. A young stellar object (YSO) associated with a bright NIR nebulosity and a molecular hydrogen object (a probable obscured HH-object), were discovered in the globule. Molecular hydrogen and Br_gamma line emission is seen in the direction of the YSO. The observed maximum optical extinction in the globule head is 9.2 magnitudes. The peak N(H2) column density and the total mass derived from the extinction are 9.0 10^21 cm-2 and and 16.7 Msun (d/300pc)^2. C18O emission in the globule head is detected in a 1.5'' by 4' area with a sharp maximum SW of the YSO. Three regions can be discerned in C18O line velocity and excitation temperature. Because of variations in the C18O excitation temperature the integrated line emission does not follow the optical extinction. It is argued that the variations in the C18O excitation temperatures are caused by radiative heating by NX Pup and interaction of the YSO with the parent cloud. No indication of a strong molecular outflow from the YSO is evident in the molecular line data. The IRAS point source 07178-4429 located in the CG 1 head resolves into two sources in the HIRES enhanced IRAS images. The 12 and 25 micron emission originates mainly in the star NX Puppis and the 60 and 100 micron emission in the YSO. The IRAS FIR luminosity of the YSO is 3.1 Lsun.
Cometary globules, dense molecular gas structures exposed to the UV radiation, are found inside HII regions. Understanding the nature and origin of these structures through a kinematic study of the molecular gas is useful to advance in our knowledge of the interplay between radiation and molecular gas. Using ASTE we carried out molecular observations towards two cometary globules (Sim129 and Sim130) in the HII region Sh2-236. We mapped two regions with the 12CO J=3-2 and HCO+ J=4-3 lines. Additionally, two single pointings of C2H (N=4-3), HNC and HCN J=4-3 were observed. We combined our observ…
We present wide-field multi-wavelength observations of $γ$ Cassiopeiae (or $γ$~Cas for short) in order to study its feedback toward the interstellar environment. A large expanding cavity is discovered toward $γ$~Cas in the neutral hydrogen (HI) images at a systemic velocity of about -10 km/s. The measured dimension of the cavity is roughly 2.0 deg $\times$ 1.4 deg (or 6.0 pc $\times$ 4.2 pc at a distance of 168 pc), while the expansion velocity is about 5.0$\pm$0.5 km/s. The CO observations reveal systematic velocity gradients in IC63 (about 20 km/s/pc) and IC59 (about 30 km/s/pc), two cometar…
We have conducted a high-dispersion ($R \sim$ 34,000) optical spectroscopic study of 10 young stars near the cometary gloule CG 30 in the Gum Nebula, a diffuse H \textsc{ii} region home to at least 32 cometary globules. All 10 spectroscopically observed stars at the nebula's northern edge are of low mass (spectral types M4.5 - K5), have broad H$α$ emission, and show spectral veiling. Eight of the 10 are classical T Tauri stars. We spectroscopically measure the photospheric properties of CG 30 IRS 4 inside CG 30. Though embedded, CG 30 IRS 4 is T Tauri-like, with relatively slow projected rotat…
In this paper, the results obtained from the polarimetric study of a Bok globule CB17 in both optical and sub-millimeter wavelength are presented. The optical polarimetric observations in R-band ($λ$ = 630 nm, $Δλ$ = 120 nm) were conducted from 1.04-meter Sampurnanand Telescope, ARIES, Nainital, India on 9th March 2016, while, the sub-mm polarimetric data are taken from the SCUPOL data archive which has been reanalyzed. The contours of Herschel\footnote{Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important par…
Strong winds and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from O-type stars disrupt and ionize their molecular core birthplaces, sweeping up material into parsec-size shells. Owing to dissociation by starlight, the thinnest shells are expected to host low molecular abundances and therefore little star formation. Here, we expand previous maps taken with the IRAM 30m telescope and present square-degree 12CO and 13CO (J=2-1) maps of the wind-driven "Veil bubble'' that surrounds the Trapezium cluster and its natal Orion molecular core (OMC). Although widespread and extended CO emission is largely absent from th…
We investigate the young stellar populations associated with DR 18 and ECX 6-21, which are two isolated globules irradiated by the O-type stars of the Cygnus OB2 association. Both are HII regions containing obvious tracers of recent and ongoing star formation. We also study smaller isolated molecular structures in their surroundings. Both globules contain their own embedded populations, with a higher fraction of the less-evolved classes. Masses and temperatures are estimated under the assumption of a common age of 1 Myr, which has been found to appropriately represent the general Cygnus OB2 YS…
In the work presented here, the impact of magnetic field on the dynamical evolution of cometary globules Sim 129 and Sim 130 in Sh2-236 H\,II region and the ionized gas streaming out of their surfaces is investigated. The magnetic field morphology in the region associated with these globules is inferred using optical polarization measurements with the Sampurnanand Telescope at ARIES. The nebular emission is probed through radio continuum mapping at 1.4~GHz with the archival National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) very large array (VLA) Sky Survey (NVSS) data. The correlation of these measu…
We combine MUSE and ALMA observations with theoretical models to evaluate how a tadpole-shaped globule located in the Carina Nebula has been influenced by its environment. This globule is now relatively small (radius ~2500 au), hosts a protostellar jet+outflow (HH 900) and, with a blue-shifted velocity of ~10 km/s, is travelling faster than it should be if its kinematics were set by the turbulent velocity dispersion of the precursor cloud. Its outer layers are currently still subject to heating, but comparing the internal and external pressures implies that the globule is in a post-collapse ph…
We present an analysis of the mid-infrared spectra, obtained from the Spitzer Space Telescope, of the dark globule, DC 314.8--5.1, which is at the onset of low-mass star formation. The target has a serendipitous association with a B-type field star, which illuminates a reflection nebula in the cloud. We focus on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features prevalent throughout the mid-infrared range. The analysis of the spectra with the PAHFIT software as well as pypahdb package, shows that (i) the intensities of PAH features decrease over distance from the ionizing star toward …
LDN 1615/1616 and CB 28 (hereafter, L1616) together form a cometary globule located at an angular distance of about 8 degrees west of the Orion OB1 association, aligned roughly along the east-west direction, and showing a distinct head-tail structure. The presence of massive stars in the Orion belt has been considered to be responsible for the radiation driven implosion mode of star formation in L1616. Based on the latest Gaia EDR3 measurements of the previously known young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with L1616, we find the distance to this cloud of 384$\pm$5 pc. We present optical pola…

Deuterated methanol is one of the most robust windows astrochemists have on the individual chemical reactions forming deuterium-bearing molecules and the physicochemical history of the regions where they reside. The first-time detection of mono- and di-deuterated methanol in a cometary coma is presented for comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko using Rosetta-ROSINA data. D-methanol (CH3OD and CH2DOH combined) and D2-methanol (CH2DOD and CHD2OH combined) have an abundance of 5.5+/-0.46 and 0.00069+/-0.00014 per cent relative to normal methanol. The data span a methanol deuteration fraction (D/H ratio…
(Abridged) IC1396A is a cometary globule containing the Class 0 source IC1396A-PACS-1. We use IRAM 30m and Gaia DR2 data to explore the star-formation history of IC1396A and investigate the possibilities of triggered star formation. IRAM and Herschel continuum data reveal dust temperatures and column densities. Heterodyne data reveal the velocity structure of the gas. Gaia DR2 proper motions for the stars complete the kinematics of the region. IC1396A-PACS-1 shows molecular emission similar to a hot corino with warm carbon chain chemistry, and is surrounded by gas at velocities significantly d…
Gas accretion is a key process in star formation. However, the gas infall detections in high-mass star forming regions with high-spatial resolution observations are rare. Here we report the detection of gas infall towards a cometary ultracompact H{\sc ii} region "C" in G34.26+0.15 complex. The hot core associated with "C" has a mass of $\sim$76 M$_{\sun}$ and a volume density of 1.1$\times10^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$. The HCN (3--2), HCO$^{+}$ (1--0) lines observed by single-dishes and the CN (2--1) lines observed by the SMA show redshifted absorption features, indicating gas infall. We found a linear re…
We present the first comprehensive study of the most massive globular cluster Omega Centauri in the far-ultraviolet (FUV) extending from the center to ~ 28% of the tidal radius using the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope aboard AstroSat. A comparison of the FUV-optical color-magnitude diagrams with available canonical models reveals that the horizontal branch (HB) stars bluer than the knee (hHBs) and the white dwarfs (WDs) are fainter in the FUV by ~ 0.5 mag than model predictions. They are also fainter than their counterparts in M13, another massive cluster. We simulated HB with at least five sub…
