Context. IC 1396N is a bright-rimmed cloud associated with an intermediate-mass star-forming region, where a number of Herbig-Haro objects, H2 jet-like features, CO molecular outflows, and millimeter compact sources have been observed. Aims. To study in detail the complex structure of the IC 1396N core and the molecular outflows detected in the region and to reveal the presence of additional YSOs inside this globule. Methods. We carried out a deep survey of the IC 1396N region in the J, H, K' broadband filters and deep high-angular resolution observations in the H2 narrowband filter with NICS at the TNG telescope. The completeness limits in the 2MASS standard are Ks~17.5, H~18.5 and J~19.5. Results. A total of 736 sources have been detected in all three bands within the area where the JHK' images overlap. There are 128 sources detected only in HK', 67 detected only in K', and 79 detected only in H. We found only few objects exhibiting a Near-Infrared excess and no clear signs of clustering of sources towards the southern rim. In case of triggered star formation in the southern rim of the globule, this could be very recent, because it is not evidenced through Near-Infrared imaging alone. The H2 emission is complex and knotty and shows a large number of molecular hydrogen features spread over the region, testifying a recent star-formation activity throughout the whole globule. This emission is resolved into several chains or groups of knots that sometimes show a jet-like morphology. The shocked cloudlet model scenario previously proposed to explain the V-shaped morphology of the CO molecular outflow powered by the intermediate-mass YSO BIMA 2 seems to be confirmed by the presence of H2 emission at the position of the deflecting western clump. New possible flows have been discovered in the globule,
We present a study on the molecular gas towards a bright-rimmed cloud located to the north of the infrared dust bubble N30. Using the emission from the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J=3-2 line, together with infrared and radio continuum data, we characterized the bubble and the related molecular cloud. In addition, we show an analysis of the behaviour of the abundance ratio 13CO/C18O towards the bright-rimmed cloud, and we search for clues on recent star-formation.
We observed 42 molecular condensations within previously identified bright-rimmed clouds in the ammonia rotational inversion lines NH3 (1,1), (2,2), (3,3) and (4,4) using the Green Bank Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia. Using the relative peaks of the ammonia lines and their hyperfine satellites we have determined important parameters of these clouds, including rotational temperatures and column densities. These observations confirm the presence of dense gas towards IRAS point sources detected at submillimetre wavelengths. Derived physical properties allow us to refine the sample of brig…
Bright-rimmed clouds form on the edges of H II regions affected by the high energy radiation from a central ionizing source. The UV radiation from the ionizing source results in compression and ionization causing either cloud disruption or further star formation. In this work, we present R-band polarization measurements towards four bright-rimmed clouds, IC1396A, BRC 37, BRC 38, and BRC 39, located in the different directions of the H II region, Sh2-131, in order to map magnetic fields (B-fields) in the plane of the sky. These BRCs are illuminated by the O star HD206267 and present a range of …
To characterize a bright-rimmed cloud embedded in the HII region Sh2-48 searching for evidence of triggered star formation. We carried out observations towards a region of 2'x2' centered at RA=18h 22m 11.39s, dec.=-14deg 35m 24.81s (J2000) using the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE; Chile) in the 12CO J=3-2,13CO J=3-2, HCO+ J=4-3, and CS J=7-6 lines with an angular resolution of about 22". We also present radio continuum observations at 5 GHz carried out with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA; EEUU) interferometer with a synthetized beam of 7"x5". The analysis of our molecular …
Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are excellent laboratories to explore the radiation-driven implosion mode of star formation because they show evidence of triggered star formation. In our previous study, BRC 18 has been found to accelerate away from the direction of the ionizing Hii region because of the well known "Rocket Effect". Based on the assumption that both BRC 18 and the candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) are kinematically coupled and using the latest Gaia EDR3 measurements, we found that the relative proper motions of the candidate YSOs exhibit a tendency of moving away from the ioniz…
The results of a spectroscopic survey of H alpha emission line stars associated with fourteen bright rimmed clouds are presented. Slit-less optical spectroscopy was carried out with the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) 2m telescope and IUCAA Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (IFOSC). H alpha emission line was detected from 173 objects. Among them 85 objects have a strong H alpha emission line with its equivalent width larger than 10 A. Those are classical T Tauri stars. 52 objects have a weak H alpha emission line with its equivalent width less than 10 A and do…
We carried out deep and wide-field near- and mid-infrared observations for a sample of 8 bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). Supplemented with the $Spitzer$ archival data, we have identified and classified 44 to 433 young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with these BRCs. The Class I sources are generally located towards the places with higher extinction and are relatively closer to each other than the Class II sources, confirming that the young protostars are usually found in regions having denser molecular material. On the other hand the comparatively older population, Class II objects, are more ra…

We are performing a series of observations with ground-based telescopes toward Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) in the $λ$ Orionis complex in order to systematically investigate the effects of stellar feedback. In the particular case of PGCC G192.32-11.88, we discovered an extremely young Class 0 protostellar object (G192N) and a proto-brown dwarf candidate (G192S). G192N and G192S are located in a gravitationally bound bright-rimmed clump. The velocity and temperature gradients seen in line emission of CO isotopologues indicate that PGCC G192.32-11.88 is externally heated and compressed. G…
We have investigated the young stellar population in and around SFO 38, one of the massive globules located in the northern part of the Galactic HII region IC 1396, using the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations (3.6 to 24 micron) and followed up with ground based optical photometric and spectroscopic observations. Based on the IRAC and MIPS colors and H-alpha emission we identify ~45 Young Stellar Objects (Classes 0/I/II) and 13 probable Pre Main Sequence candidates. We derive the spectral types (mostly K- and M-type stars), effective temperatures and individual extinction of the relatively bri…
The main objective of this paper is to study the possibility of triggered star formation on the border of the HII region S233, which is formed by a B-star. Using high-resolution spectra we determine the spectral class of the ionizing star as B0.5 V and the radial velocity of the star to be -17.5(1.4) km/s. This value is consistent with the velocity of gas in a wide field across the S233 region, suggesting that the ionizing star was formed from a parent cloud belonging to the S233 region. By studying spatial-kinematic structure of the molecular cloud in the S233 region, we detected an isolated …
Stars are formed by gravitational collapse, spontaneously or, in some cases under the constructive influence of nearby massive stars, out of molecular cloud cores. Here we present an observational diagnosis of such triggered formation processes in the prominent \ion{H}{2} region Sh\,2-142, which is associated with the young star cluster NGC\,7380, and with some bright-rimmed clouds as the signpost of photoionization of molecular cloud surfaces. Using near- (2MASS) and mid-infrared (WISE) colors, we identified candidate young stars at different evolutionary stages, including embedded infrared s…
It is currently widely accepted that open star clusters and stellar associations result from the evolution of embedded star clusters. Parameters such star formation efficiency, time-scale of gas removal and velocity dispersion can be determinants of their future as bound or unbound systems. Finding objects at an intermediate evolution state can provide constraints to model the embedded cluster evolution. In the HII region IC1396, Trumpler 37 is an extended young cluster that presents characteristics of an association. We employed the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometry to analysing it…
Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are formed at the periphery of H$~$II regions as the radiation from the central star interacts with dense gas. The ionization and resulting compression of the clouds may lead to cloud disruption causing secondary star formation depending on the stellar and gas parameters. Here we use R-band polarimetry to probe the plane-of-the sky magnetic field in the two near-by BRCs IC\,59 and IC\,63. Both nebulae are illuminated by $γ$ Cas with the direction of ionizing radiation being orientated parallel or perpendicular to the local magnetic field, allowing us to probe the im…
(Abridged) Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are isolated molecular clouds located on the edges of evolved HII regions where star formation is thought may have been triggered. In this paper we investigate the current level of star formation within a sample of BRCs and evaluate to what extent star formation may have been induced. We present the results of a programme of position-switched CO observations towards 45 southern BRCs. The 12CO, 13CO and C18O (J=1-0) were simultaneously observed using the 22m Mopra telescope. We complement these observations with archival mid-IR submm and radio data. Analys…

We present Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper observations of ionized gas in the Smith Cloud, a high velocity cloud which Lockman et al. have recently suggested is interacting with the Galactic disk. Our H-alpha map shows the brightest H-alpha emission, 0.43 \pm 0.04 R, coincident with the brightest H I, while slightly fainter H-alpha emission (0.25 \pm 0.02 R) is observed in a region with H I intensities < 0.1 times as bright as the brightest H I. We derive an ionized mass of \gtrsim 3 \times 10^6 M_\odot, comparable to the H I mass, with the H^+ mass spread over a considerably larger area than the H I…
We examine the role of the interstellar magnetic field to modulate the orientation of turbulent flows within the Taurus molecular cloud using spatial gradients of thin velocity slices of 12CO and 13CO antenna temperatures. Our analysis accounts for the random errors of the gradients that arise from the thermal noise of the spectra. The orientations of the vectors normal to the antenna temperature gradient vectors are compared to the magnetic field orientations that are calculated from Planck 353~GHz polarization data. These relative orientations are parameterized with the projected Rayleigh st…
We present new observations of [CII] fine structure line emission from an isolated molecular cloud using the upGREAT instrument onboard SOFIA. These data are analyzed together with archival CO=1-0 and HI 21 cm emission spectra to investigate the role of converging atomic gas flows in the formation of molecular clouds. Bright [CII] emission is detected throughout the mapped area that likely originates from photodissociation regions excited by UV radiation fields produced by newborn stars within the cloud. Upon spatial averaging of the [CII] spectra, we identify weak [CII] emission within veloci…
We present integral field spectroscopy of two selected zones in the Orion Nebula obtained with the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS), covering the optical spectral range from 3500 to 7200 A and with a spatial resolution of 1". The observed zones are located on the prominent Bright Bar and on the brightest area at the northeast of the Orion South cloud, both containing remarkable ionization fronts. We obtain maps of emission line fluxes and ratios, electron density and temperatures, and chemical abundances. We study the ionization structure and morphology of both fields, which ion…
Active galactic nuclei play a crucial role in the accretion and ejection of gas in galaxies. Although their outflows are well studied, finding direct evidence of accretion has proved very difficult and has so far been done for very few sources. A promising way to study the significance of cold accretion is by observing the absorption of an active galactic nucleus's extremely bright radio emission by the cold gas lying along the line-of-sight. As such, we present ALMA CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) observations of the Hydra-A brightest cluster galaxy (z=0.054) which reveal the existence of cold, molecular…
With the goal of understanding why X-rays have been reported near some high velocity clouds, we perform detailed 3 dimensional hydrodynamic and magnetohydrodynamic simulations of clouds interacting with environmental gas like that in the Galaxy's thick disk/halo or the Magellanic Stream. We examine 2 scenarios. In the first, clouds travel fast enough to shock-heat warm environmental gas. In this scenario, the X-ray productivity depends strongly on the speed of the cloud and the radiative cooling rate. In order to shock-heat environmental gas to temperatures of > or = 10^6 K, cloud speeds of > …
We present WHAM observations of Halpha, [N II], and [S II] in the Smith Cloud. A map of Halpha emission from the cloud shows ionized gas coincident with the brightest H I emission, but nearly-as-bright Halpha in some regions with faint H I. The ionized mass of the cloud is at least as large as the neutral mass, > 10^6 M_sun. Ionized gas in the core of the Smith Cloud has an electron temperature 6000 K < T < 16000 K. The observed ratio [N II] / Halpha = 0.39 \pm 0.09 shows that the cloud has a non-primordial nitrogen abundance, 0.1 - 1 times solar.
We present and analyze the radial luminosity profiles of a sample of 1066 stellar clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. By design, this study closely follows the compilation by Hill & Zaritsky of the structural parameters of stellar clusters in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Both King and Elson-Fall-Freeman (EFF) model profiles are fit to V-band surface brightness profiles measured from the Magellanic Cloud Photometric Survey images. We tabulate the concentration, central surface brightness, tidal radii, 90% enclosed luminosity radii (r_{90}), and local background luminosity density. Over two t…
The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) provides the only laboratory to study the structure of molecular gas at high resolution and low metallicity. We present results from the Herschel Spectroscopic Survey of the SMC (HS$^{3}$), which mapped the key far-IR cooling lines [CII], [OI], [NII], and [OIII] in five star-forming regions, and new ALMA 7m-array maps of $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO $(2-1)$ with coverage overlapping four of the five HS$^{3}$ regions. We detect [CII] and [OI] throughout all of the regions mapped. The data allow us to compare the structure of the molecular clouds and surrounding photo…
We wish to relate the degree scale structure of galactic diffuse clouds to sub-arcsecond atomic and molecular absorption spectra obtained against extragalactic continuum background sources. To do this, we used the ARO 12m telescope to map J=1-0 CO emission at 1' resolution over 30' fields around the positions of 11 background sources occulted by 20 molecular absorption line components, of which 11 had CO emission counterparts. We compare maps of CO emission to sub-arcsec atomic and molecular absorption spectra and to the large-scale distribution of interstellar reddening. The main results are:…
We present evidence for interaction between the supernova remnant (SNR) G357.7+0.3 and nearby molecular clouds, leading to the formation of wind-swept structures and bright emission rims. These features are not observed at visual wavelengths, but are clearly visible in mid-infrared (MIR) mapping undertaken using the Spitzer Space Telescope (SST). Analysis of one of these clouds, the bright cometary structure G357.46+0.60, suggests that it contains strong polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features in the 5.8 and 8.0 microns photometric bands, and that these are highly variable over…
We are presenting here a follow-up study of the molecular gas and dust in the environs of the star forming region NGC 3503. This study aims at dealing with the interaction of NGC 3503 with its parental molecular cloud, and also with the star formation in the region. To analyze the molecular gas we use CO(2-1), 13CO(2-1), C18O(2-1), and HCN(3-2) line data obtained with the APEX telescope. To study the distribution of the dust, we make use of images at 870 microns from the ATLASGAL survey and IRAC-GLIMPSE archival images. We use public 2MASS and WISE data to search for candidate YSOs in the regi…

The nature of maser emission means that the apparent angular size of an individual maser spot is determined by the amplification process as well as by the instrinsic size of the emitting cloud. Highly sensitive MERLIN radio interferometry images spatially and spectrally resolve water maser clouds around evolved stars. We measured the properties of clouds around the red supergiant S Per and the AGB stars IK Tau, RT Vir, U Her and U Ori, to test maser beaming theory. Spherical clouds are expected to produce an inverse relationship between maser intensity and apparent size, which would not be see…
We present results from deep HI and optical imaging of AGC 229101, an unusual HI source detected at v$_{\rm helio}$ = 7116 km/s in the ALFALFA survey. Initially classified as a candidate "dark" source because it lacks a clear optical counterpart in SDSS or DSS2 imaging, AGC 229101 has $10^{9.31\pm0.05}$ solar masses of HI, but an HI line width of only 43$\pm$9 km/s. Low resolution WSRT imaging and higher resolution VLA B-array imaging show that the source is significantly elongated, stretching over a projected length of ~80 kpc. The HI imaging resolves the source into two parts of roughly equa…
In this paper we examine the factors that shape the distribution of molecular gas surface densities on the 150 pc scale across 67 morphologically diverse star-forming galaxies in the PHANGS-ALMA CO (2-1) survey. Dividing each galaxy into radial bins, we measure molecular gas surface density contrasts, defined here as the ratio between a fixed high percentile of the CO distribution and a fixed reference level in each bin. This reference level captures the level of the faint CO floor that extends between bright filamentary features, while the intensity level of the higher percentile probes the s…
We investigate the gas dynamics and the physical properties of photodissociation regions (PDRs) in IC1396A, which is an illuminated bright-rimmed globule with internal structures created by young stellar objects. Our mapping observations of the [CII] emission in IC1396A with GREAT onboard SOFIA revealed the detailed velocity structure of this region. We combined them with observations of the [CI] 3P_1 - 3P_0 and CO(4-3) emissions to study the dynamics of the different tracers and physical properties of the PDRs. The [CII] emission generally matches the IRAC 8 micron, which traces the polycycli…
We present deep optical images of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds (LMC and SMC) using a low cost telephoto lens with a wide field of view to explore stellar substructure in the outskirts of the stellar disk of the LMC (r < 10 degrees from the center). These data have higher resolution than existing star count maps, and highlight the existence of stellar arcs and multiple spiral arms in the northern periphery, with no comparable counterparts in the South. We compare these data to detailed simulations of the LMC disk outskirts, following interactions with its low mass companion, the SMC. W…
We present the highest resolution (1") $^{12}$CO(1-0) observations of molecular gas in the dwarf starburst galaxy NGC 625, to date, obtained with ALMA. Molecular gas is distributed in discrete clouds within an area of $0.4$ kpc$^2$ and does not have well-ordered large-scale motions. We measure a total molecular mass in NGC 625 of $5.3\times 10^6 M_\odot$, assuming a Milky Way CO-to-H$_2$ conversion factor. We use the CPROPS package to identify molecular clouds and measure their properties. The 19 resolved CO clouds have a median radius of 20 pc, a median line width 2.5 km s$^{-1}$, and a media…
We find evidence for the impact of infalling, low-metallicity gas on the Galactic disk. This is based on FUV absorption line spectra, 21-cm emission line spectra, and FIR mapping to estimate the abundance and physical properties of IV21 (IVC135+54-45), a galactic intermediate-velocity molecular cloud (IVMC) that lies ~300 pc above the disk. The metallicity of IV21 was estimated using observations toward the sdB star PG1144+615, located at a projected distance of 16 pc from the cloud's densest core, by measuring ion and HI column densities for comparison with known solar abundances. Despite the…
We investigate observational signatures of triggered star formation in bright rimmed clouds (BRCs) by using molecular line transfer calculations based on radiation-hydrodynamic radiatively-driven-implosion models. We find that for BRCs the separation in velocity between the line profile peak of an optically thick and an optically thin line is determined by both the observer viewing angle and the density of the shell driving into the cloud. In agreement with observations, we find that most BRC line profiles are symmetric and that asymmetries can be either red or blue, in contrast to the blue-do…
We investigated six H II regions with infrared, bright rimmed bubble or cometary morphology, in search of quantitative evidence for triggered star formation, both collect and collapse and radiatively driven implosion. We identified and classified 458 Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in and around the H II regions. YSOs were determined by fitting a collection of radiative transfer model spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to infrared photometry for a large sample of point sources. We determined areas where there exist enhanced populations of relatively unevolved YSOs on the bright rims of these re…
We analyze {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} observations of nine Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages of 1--2 Gyr to search for evolved counterparts of blue straggler stars. Near the red clump regions in the clusters' color--magnitude diagrams, we find branches of evolved stars that are much brighter than normal evolved stars. We examine the effects of photometric artifacts, differential reddening, and field contamination. We conclude that these bright evolved stars cannot be explained by any of these effects. Our statistical tests show that the contributions of photometric uncertainties…
Rich young stellar clusters produce HII regions whose expansion into the nearby molecular cloud is thought to trigger the formation of new stars. However, the importance of this mode of star formation is uncertain. This investigation seeks to quantify triggered star formation (TSF) in IC 1396A (a.k.a., the Elephant Trunk Nebula), a bright rimmed cloud (BRC) on the periphery of the nearby giant HII region IC 1396 produced by the Trumpler 37 cluster. X-ray selection of young stars from Chandra X-ray Observatory data is combined with existing optical and infrared surveys to give a more complete c…
Massive star evolution at low metallicity is closely connected to many fields in high-redshift astrophysics, but poorly understood. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) is a unique laboratory to study this because of its metallicity of 0.2 Zsol, its proximity, and because it is currently forming stars. We used a spectral type catalog in combination with GAIA magnitudes to calculate temperatures and luminosities of bright SMC stars. By comparing these with literature studies, we tested the validity of our method, and using GAIA data, we estimated the completeness of stars in the catalog as a functi…
We used Spitzer's Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) to observe stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) selected from the Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) Point Source Catalog. We concentrate on the dust properties of oxygen-rich evolved stars, which show less alumina than Galactic stars. This difference may arise from the SMC's lower metallicity, but it could be a selection effect: the SMC sample includes more stars which are brighter and thus more massive. The distribution of SMC stars along the silicate sequence looks more like that of Galactic red supergiants than asymptotic giant branch stars …
The possibility that the solar chemical composition, as well as the similar composition of the rich open cluster M67, have been affected by dust cleansing of the pre-solar/pre-cluster cloud, due to the radiative forces from bright early-type stars in its neighbourhood, is explored. Estimates, using semi-analytical methods and essentially based on momentum conservation, are made of possible dust-cleansing effects. Our calculations indicate that the amounts of cleansed neutral gas are limited to a relatively thin shell surrounding the HII region around the early-type stars. It seems possible tha…
X-ray reflection off dense molecular clouds in the Galactic Centre region has established itself as a powerful probe for the past activity record of the supermassive black hole Sgr A* on a timescale of a few hundred years. Detailed studies of the reflection signal from individual clouds allow us to estimate parameters of the brightest flare(s) and explore properties of the dense gas distribution inside and around them. On the other hand, wide area surveys covering the full Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) are crucial to spot brightening of the new clouds and long-term decay of the flux from the on…
We present observations of the most bright main sequence stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud stellar cluster NGC330 obtained with the integral field spectrograph MUSE@VLT. The use of this valuable instrument allows us to study both photometric and spectroscopic properties of stellar populations of this young star cluster. The photometric data provide us a precise color magnitude diagram, which seems to support the presence of two stellar populations of ages of $\sim$ 18 Myr and $\sim$ 30 Myr assuming a metallicity of Z = 0.002. Thanks to the spectroscopic data, we derive helium abundance of 10…
We investigate the dust associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) N49 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as observed with the Herschel Space Observatory. N49 is unusually bright because of an interaction with a molecular cloud along its eastern edge. We have used PACS and SPIRE to measure the far IR flux densities of the entire SNR and of a bright region on the eastern edge of the SNR where the SNR shock is encountering the molecular cloud. Using these fluxes supplemented with archival data at shorter wavelengths, we estimate the dust mass associated with N49 to be about 10 Msun. The bulk o…
The Serpens Molecular Cloud is one of the most active star-forming regions within 500 pc, with over one thousand of YSOs at different evolutionary stages. The ages of the member stars inform us about the star formation history of the cloud. In this paper, we develop a spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting method for nearby evolved (diskless) young stars from members of the Pleiades to estimate their ages, with a temperature scale adopted from APOGEE spectra. When compared with literature temperatures of selected YSOs in Orion, the SED fits to cool (<5000 K) stars have temperatures that di…
We carry out three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of the supernova remnants (SNRs) produced inside molecular clouds (MCs) near their surface using the HLL code (Harten et al. 1983). We explore the dynamical evolution and the X-ray morphology of SNRs after breaking through the MC surface for ranges of the explosion depths below the surface and the density ratios of the clouds to the intercloud media (ICM). We find that if an SNR breaks out through an MC surface in its Sedov stage, the outermost dense shell of the remnant is divided into several layers. The divided layers are subject to th…
