To characterize a bright-rimmed cloud embedded in the HII region Sh2-48 searching for evidence of triggered star formation. We carried out observations towards a region of 2'x2' centered at RA=18h 22m 11.39s, dec.=-14deg 35m 24.81s (J2000) using the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE; Chile) in the 12CO J=3-2,13CO J=3-2, HCO+ J=4-3, and CS J=7-6 lines with an angular resolution of about 22". We also present radio continuum observations at 5 GHz carried out with the Jansky Very Large Array (JVLA; EEUU) interferometer with a synthetized beam of 7"x5". The analysis of our molecular observations reveals the presence of a relatively dense clump with n(H_2)~3x10^3 cm^-3, located in projection onto the interior of the HII region Sh2-48. The emission distribution of the four observed molecular transitions has, at VLSR~38 kms^-1, morphological anti-correlation with the bright-rimmed cloud as seen in the optical emission. From the new radio continuum observations we identify a thin layer of ionized gas located at the border of the clump which is facing to the ionizing star. The ionized gas has an electron density of about 73 cm^-3 which supports the hypothesis that the clump is being photoionized by the nearby star, BD-14 5014. From the evaluation of the pressure balance between the ionized and molecular gas, we conclude that the clump would be in a pre-pressure balance state with the shocks being driven into the surface layer. Two YSO candidates (class I), are placed slightly beyond the bright rim suggesting that their formation could have been triggered via the radiation-driven implosion process.
We present a study on the molecular gas towards a bright-rimmed cloud located to the north of the infrared dust bubble N30. Using the emission from the 12CO, 13CO, and C18O J=3-2 line, together with infrared and radio continuum data, we characterized the bubble and the related molecular cloud. In addition, we show an analysis of the behaviour of the abundance ratio 13CO/C18O towards the bright-rimmed cloud, and we search for clues on recent star-formation.
We observed 42 molecular condensations within previously identified bright-rimmed clouds in the ammonia rotational inversion lines NH3 (1,1), (2,2), (3,3) and (4,4) using the Green Bank Telescope in Green Bank, West Virginia. Using the relative peaks of the ammonia lines and their hyperfine satellites we have determined important parameters of these clouds, including rotational temperatures and column densities. These observations confirm the presence of dense gas towards IRAS point sources detected at submillimetre wavelengths. Derived physical properties allow us to refine the sample of brig…
Bright-rimmed clouds form on the edges of H II regions affected by the high energy radiation from a central ionizing source. The UV radiation from the ionizing source results in compression and ionization causing either cloud disruption or further star formation. In this work, we present R-band polarization measurements towards four bright-rimmed clouds, IC1396A, BRC 37, BRC 38, and BRC 39, located in the different directions of the H II region, Sh2-131, in order to map magnetic fields (B-fields) in the plane of the sky. These BRCs are illuminated by the O star HD206267 and present a range of …
Context. IC 1396N is a bright-rimmed cloud associated with an intermediate-mass star-forming region, where a number of Herbig-Haro objects, H2 jet-like features, CO molecular outflows, and millimeter compact sources have been observed. Aims. To study in detail the complex structure of the IC 1396N core and the molecular outflows detected in the region and to reveal the presence of additional YSOs inside this globule. Methods. We carried out a deep survey of the IC 1396N region in the J, H, K' broadband filters and deep high-angular resolution observations in the H2 narrowband filter with NICS …
Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are excellent laboratories to explore the radiation-driven implosion mode of star formation because they show evidence of triggered star formation. In our previous study, BRC 18 has been found to accelerate away from the direction of the ionizing Hii region because of the well known "Rocket Effect". Based on the assumption that both BRC 18 and the candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) are kinematically coupled and using the latest Gaia EDR3 measurements, we found that the relative proper motions of the candidate YSOs exhibit a tendency of moving away from the ioniz…
The results of a spectroscopic survey of H alpha emission line stars associated with fourteen bright rimmed clouds are presented. Slit-less optical spectroscopy was carried out with the Inter University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) 2m telescope and IUCAA Faint Object Spectrograph and Camera (IFOSC). H alpha emission line was detected from 173 objects. Among them 85 objects have a strong H alpha emission line with its equivalent width larger than 10 A. Those are classical T Tauri stars. 52 objects have a weak H alpha emission line with its equivalent width less than 10 A and do…
We carried out deep and wide-field near- and mid-infrared observations for a sample of 8 bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs). Supplemented with the $Spitzer$ archival data, we have identified and classified 44 to 433 young stellar objects (YSOs) associated with these BRCs. The Class I sources are generally located towards the places with higher extinction and are relatively closer to each other than the Class II sources, confirming that the young protostars are usually found in regions having denser molecular material. On the other hand the comparatively older population, Class II objects, are more ra…
We are performing a series of observations with ground-based telescopes toward Planck Galactic cold clumps (PGCCs) in the $λ$ Orionis complex in order to systematically investigate the effects of stellar feedback. In the particular case of PGCC G192.32-11.88, we discovered an extremely young Class 0 protostellar object (G192N) and a proto-brown dwarf candidate (G192S). G192N and G192S are located in a gravitationally bound bright-rimmed clump. The velocity and temperature gradients seen in line emission of CO isotopologues indicate that PGCC G192.32-11.88 is externally heated and compressed. G…
We have investigated the young stellar population in and around SFO 38, one of the massive globules located in the northern part of the Galactic HII region IC 1396, using the Spitzer IRAC and MIPS observations (3.6 to 24 micron) and followed up with ground based optical photometric and spectroscopic observations. Based on the IRAC and MIPS colors and H-alpha emission we identify ~45 Young Stellar Objects (Classes 0/I/II) and 13 probable Pre Main Sequence candidates. We derive the spectral types (mostly K- and M-type stars), effective temperatures and individual extinction of the relatively bri…

The main objective of this paper is to study the possibility of triggered star formation on the border of the HII region S233, which is formed by a B-star. Using high-resolution spectra we determine the spectral class of the ionizing star as B0.5 V and the radial velocity of the star to be -17.5(1.4) km/s. This value is consistent with the velocity of gas in a wide field across the S233 region, suggesting that the ionizing star was formed from a parent cloud belonging to the S233 region. By studying spatial-kinematic structure of the molecular cloud in the S233 region, we detected an isolated …
Stars are formed by gravitational collapse, spontaneously or, in some cases under the constructive influence of nearby massive stars, out of molecular cloud cores. Here we present an observational diagnosis of such triggered formation processes in the prominent \ion{H}{2} region Sh\,2-142, which is associated with the young star cluster NGC\,7380, and with some bright-rimmed clouds as the signpost of photoionization of molecular cloud surfaces. Using near- (2MASS) and mid-infrared (WISE) colors, we identified candidate young stars at different evolutionary stages, including embedded infrared s…
One of the main reasons that triggered star formation is contentious is the failure to accurately link the observations with models in a detailed, quantitative, way. It is therefore critical to continuously test and improve the model details and methods with which comparisons to observations are made. We use a Monte Carlo radiation transport and hydrodynamics code TORUS to show that the diffuse radiation field has a significant impact on the outcome of radiatively driven implosion (RDI) models. We also calculate SEDs and synthetic images from the models to test observational diagnostics that a…
We investigate the gas dynamics and the physical properties of photodissociation regions (PDRs) in IC1396A, which is an illuminated bright-rimmed globule with internal structures created by young stellar objects. Our mapping observations of the [CII] emission in IC1396A with GREAT onboard SOFIA revealed the detailed velocity structure of this region. We combined them with observations of the [CI] 3P_1 - 3P_0 and CO(4-3) emissions to study the dynamics of the different tracers and physical properties of the PDRs. The [CII] emission generally matches the IRAC 8 micron, which traces the polycycli…
We investigated six H II regions with infrared, bright rimmed bubble or cometary morphology, in search of quantitative evidence for triggered star formation, both collect and collapse and radiatively driven implosion. We identified and classified 458 Young Stellar Objects (YSOs) in and around the H II regions. YSOs were determined by fitting a collection of radiative transfer model spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to infrared photometry for a large sample of point sources. We determined areas where there exist enhanced populations of relatively unevolved YSOs on the bright rims of these re…
We present wide-area radio continuum 5.5 and 8.8 GHz (5.5 and 3.4 cm) Australia Telescope Compact Array observations of the complex and rich massive star-forming region G305. The aim of this study is to perform an un-targeted survey of the region in search of the compact radio emission associated with ultra-compact (UC) HII regions. Observations presented here encompass the entire complex and have a maximum resolution of ~1.5x1.4" and sensitivity of ~0.07 mJy beam^-1. By applying a data reduction method that emphasises small-scale structure, we are able to detect 71 compact radio sources distr…
Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are formed at the periphery of H$~$II regions as the radiation from the central star interacts with dense gas. The ionization and resulting compression of the clouds may lead to cloud disruption causing secondary star formation depending on the stellar and gas parameters. Here we use R-band polarimetry to probe the plane-of-the sky magnetic field in the two near-by BRCs IC\,59 and IC\,63. Both nebulae are illuminated by $γ$ Cas with the direction of ionizing radiation being orientated parallel or perpendicular to the local magnetic field, allowing us to probe the im…
We are presenting here a follow-up study of the molecular gas and dust in the environs of the star forming region NGC 3503. This study aims at dealing with the interaction of NGC 3503 with its parental molecular cloud, and also with the star formation in the region. To analyze the molecular gas we use CO(2-1), 13CO(2-1), C18O(2-1), and HCN(3-2) line data obtained with the APEX telescope. To study the distribution of the dust, we make use of images at 870 microns from the ATLASGAL survey and IRAC-GLIMPSE archival images. We use public 2MASS and WISE data to search for candidate YSOs in the regi…
(Abridged) Bright-rimmed clouds (BRCs) are isolated molecular clouds located on the edges of evolved HII regions where star formation is thought may have been triggered. In this paper we investigate the current level of star formation within a sample of BRCs and evaluate to what extent star formation may have been induced. We present the results of a programme of position-switched CO observations towards 45 southern BRCs. The 12CO, 13CO and C18O (J=1-0) were simultaneously observed using the 22m Mopra telescope. We complement these observations with archival mid-IR submm and radio data. Analys…
The edges of ionized (HII) regions are important sites for the formation of (high-mass) stars. Indeed, at least 30% of the galactic high mass star formation is observed there. The radiative and compressive impact of the HII region could induce the star formation at the border following different mechanisms such as the Collect & Collapse (C&C) or the Radiation Driven Implosion (RDI) models and change their properties. We study the properties of two zones located in the Photo Dissociation Region (PDR) of the Galactic HII region RCW120 and discussed them as a function of the physical conditions a…
W5-E has been observed with the Herschel-PACS and -SPIRE photometers, at 100, 160, 250, 350, and 500 microns. The dust temperature map shows a rather uniform temperature, in the range 17.5-20 K in the dense condensations or filaments, 21-22 K in the photodissociation regions, and 24-31 K in the direction of the ionized regions. The column densities are rather low, everywhere lower than 10^23 cm-2, and of the order of a few 10^21 cm-2 in the PDRs. About 8000 solar masses of neutral material surrounds the ionized region, which is low with respect to the volume of this HII region; we suggest that…
The bright-rimmed cloud IC 1396N is believed to host one of the few known cases where two bipolar CO outflows driven by young stellar objects actually collide. The CO outflows are traced by chains of knots of H_2 emission, with enhanced emission at the position of the possible collision. The aim of this work is to use the proper motions of the H_2 knots to confirm the collision scenario. A second epoch H_2 image was obtained, and the proper motions of the knots were determined with a time baseline of ~11 years. We also performed differential photometry on the images to check the flux variabili…
Strong winds and ultraviolet (UV) radiation from O-type stars disrupt and ionize their molecular core birthplaces, sweeping up material into parsec-size shells. Owing to dissociation by starlight, the thinnest shells are expected to host low molecular abundances and therefore little star formation. Here, we expand previous maps taken with the IRAM 30m telescope and present square-degree 12CO and 13CO (J=2-1) maps of the wind-driven "Veil bubble'' that surrounds the Trapezium cluster and its natal Orion molecular core (OMC). Although widespread and extended CO emission is largely absent from th…
Rich young stellar clusters produce HII regions whose expansion into the nearby molecular cloud is thought to trigger the formation of new stars. However, the importance of this mode of star formation is uncertain. This investigation seeks to quantify triggered star formation (TSF) in IC 1396A (a.k.a., the Elephant Trunk Nebula), a bright rimmed cloud (BRC) on the periphery of the nearby giant HII region IC 1396 produced by the Trumpler 37 cluster. X-ray selection of young stars from Chandra X-ray Observatory data is combined with existing optical and infrared surveys to give a more complete c…
We investigate observational signatures of triggered star formation in bright rimmed clouds (BRCs) by using molecular line transfer calculations based on radiation-hydrodynamic radiatively-driven-implosion models. We find that for BRCs the separation in velocity between the line profile peak of an optically thick and an optically thin line is determined by both the observer viewing angle and the density of the shell driving into the cloud. In agreement with observations, we find that most BRC line profiles are symmetric and that asymmetries can be either red or blue, in contrast to the blue-do…
Whether ionization feedback triggers the formation of massive stars is highly debated. Using ALMA 3 mm observations with a spatial resolution of $\sim 0.05$ pc and a mass sensitivity of 1.1 $\rm M_\odot$ beam$^{-1}$ at 20 K, we investigate the star formation and gas flow structures within the ionizing feedback-driven structure, a clump-scale massive ($\gtrsim 1500$ $\rm M_\odot$) bright-rimmed cloud (BRC) associated with IRAS 18290-0924. This BRC is bound only if external compression from ionized gas is considered. A small-scale ($\lesssim1$ pc) age sequence along the direction of ionizing rad…
Abridged. The bright-rimmed cloud IC1396N hosts CO, H$_2$, and Herbig-Haro outflows powered by millimetre compact sources. We aim to characterise the kinematics and physical conditions of the H$_2$ emission features spread over IC1396N, which appear as chains of knots with a jet-like morphology, tracing different H$_2$ outflows, and to obtain further information about (and an identification of) the driving sources. Low-resolution, long-slit near-infrared spectra were acquired with NICS at the TNG, using grisms KB (R~1200), HK and JH (R~500). Several slit pointings and PA were used throughout I…
We present SCUBA-2 450μm and 850μm observations of the W40 complex in the Serpens-Aquila region as part of the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) Gould Belt Survey (GBS) of nearby star-forming regions. We investigate radiative heating by constructing temperature maps from the ratio of SCUBA-2 fluxes using a fixed dust opacity spectral index, β = 1.8, and a beam convolution kernel to achieve a common 14.8" resolution. We identify 82 clumps ranging between 10 and 36K with a mean temperature of 20{\pm}3K. Clump temperature is strongly correlated with proximity to the external OB association and…
