We present an analysis of the mid-infrared spectra, obtained from the Spitzer Space Telescope, of the dark globule, DC 314.8--5.1, which is at the onset of low-mass star formation. The target has a serendipitous association with a B-type field star, which illuminates a reflection nebula in the cloud. We focus on the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission features prevalent throughout the mid-infrared range. The analysis of the spectra with the PAHFIT software as well as pypahdb package, shows that (i) the intensities of PAH features decrease over distance from the ionizing star toward the cloud center, some however showing a saturation at larger distances; (ii) the relative intensities of the 6.2 and 8.6 features with respect to the 11.2 micron feature remain high throughout the globule, suggesting a larger cation-to-neutral PAH ratio of the order of unity; the breakdown from pypahdb confirms a high ionized fraction within the cloud; (iii) the pypahdb results display a decrease in large PAH fraction with increased distance from HD 130079, as well as a statistically significant correlation between the large size fraction and the ionized fraction across the globule; (iv) the 7.7 PAH feature displays a peak nearer to 7.8 microns, suggesting a chemically processed PAH population with a small fraction of UV-processed PAHs; (v) the H2 S(0) line is detected at larger distances from the ionizing star. All in all, our results suggest divergent physical conditions within the quiescent cloud DC 314.8--5.1 as compared to molecular clouds with ongoing starformation.
Globules and pillars, impressively revealed by the Spitzer and Herschel satellites, for example, are pervasive features found in regions of massive star formation. We studied the globule IRAS 20319+3958 in Cygnus X by means of visible and near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, complemented with mid-infrared Spitzer/IRAC imaging, in order to obtain a census of its stellar content and the nature of its embedded sources. Our observations show that the globule contains an embedded aggregate of about 30 very young ($\lesssim 1$~Myr) stellar objects, for which we estimate a total mass of ~ 90 M_sun…
The Rosette Nebula is an HII region ionized mainly by the stellar cluster NGC 2244. Elephant trunks, globules, and globulettes are seen at the interface where the HII region and the surrounding molecular shell meet. We have observed a field in the northwestern part of the Rosette Nebula where we study the small globules protruding from the shell. Our aim is to measure their properties and study their star formation history in continuation of our earlier study of the features of the region. We imaged the region in broadband near-infrared (NIR) JsHKs filters and narrowband H2 1-0 S(1), P$β$, and…
IRAS 20319+3958 in Cygnus X South is a rare example of a free-floating globule (mass ~240 Msun, length ~1.5 pc) with an internal HII region created by the stellar feedback of embedded intermediate-mass stars, in particular, one Herbig Be star. Here, we present a Herschel/HIFI CII 158 mu map of the whole globule and a large set of other FIR lines (mid-to high-J CO lines observed with Herschel/PACS and SPIRE, the OI 63 mu line and the CO 16-15 line observed with upGREAT on SOFIA), covering the globule head and partly a position in the tail. The CII map revealed that the whole globule is probably…
Searches for compact mid-IR nebulae with the Spitzer Space Telescope and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), accompanied by spectroscopic observations of central stars of these nebulae led to the discovery of many dozens of massive stars at different evolutionary stages, of which the most numerous are candidate luminous blue variables (LBVs). In this paper, we give a census of candidate and confirmed Galactic LBVs revealed with Spitzer and WISE, and present some new results of spectroscopic observations of central stars of mid-IR nebulae.
On the basis of observations by Spitzer and Herschel, we present and analyse the correlations between various monochromatic infrared (IR) luminosities for star-forming galaxies, selected from two northern Spitzer Wide-area InfraRed Extragalactic Survey (SWIRE) fields. The 24- and 70 micron luminosities (L[24] and L[70]), which are dominated by the continuum of very small grains (VSGs) and warm dust in thermal equilibrium, respectively, correlate tightly with ongoing star formation. The contribution from cool dust excited by evolved stars also increases as the wavelength increases in the far-in…
The Spitzer Space Telescope revolutionized studies of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs). Its combined sensitivity and mapping speed at mid-infrared wavelengths revealed a substantial population of highly-obscured AGNs. This population implies a higher radiative accretion efficiency, and thus possibly a higher spin for black holes than indicated by surveys in the optical and X-ray. The unique mid-infrared spectrographic capability of Spitzer gave important insights into the distribution and nature of the dust surrounding AGNs, enabling the separation of AGN and starburst components, the detection o…
Whether X-ray emission in radio-loud (RL) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) originates from disk coronae or jets is still under debate. For example, the positive relationships in radio-quiet (RQ) AGNs (such as the optical to X-ray spectral index $α_{\rm {OX}}$ and Eddington ration $λ_{\rm {O}}$ as well as the X-ray photon index $Γ$ and $λ_{\rm {O}}$) are not detected in RLAGNs. We intend to further investigate this issue in this work. A sample of 27 luminous sources (including 16 quasars and 11 high-excitation radio galaxies) was selected from the 3CRR catalog to reinvestigate the origin of X-ray …
We have carried out a statistical study on the mid- and far-infrared (IR) properties of Galactic IR bubbles observed by Spitzer. Using the Spitzer 8 $μ{\rm m}$ images, we estimated the radii and covering fractions of their shells, and categorized them into closed, broken and unclassified bubbles with our data analysis method. Then, using the AKARI all-sky images at wavelengths of 9, 18, 65, 90, 140 and 160 $μ{\rm m}$, we obtained the spatial distributions and the luminosities of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), warm and cold dust components by decomposing 6-band spectral energy distribut…
We present Spitzer Space Telescope archival mid-infrared (mid-IR) spectroscopy of a sample of eleven planetary nebulae (PNe). The observations, acquired with the Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS), cover the spectral range 5.2-14.5 μm that includes the H2 0-0 S(2) to S(7) rotational emission lines. This wavelength coverage has allowed us to derive the Boltzmann distribution and calculate the H2 rotational excitation temperature (Tex). The derived excitation temperatures have consistent values ~900+/-70 K for different sources despite their different structural components. We also report the d…
The Spitzer Space Telescope Survey of the Orion A & B Molecular Clouds - Part I: A Census of Dusty Young Stellar Objects and a Study of their Mid-IR Variability
It remains uncertain which continuum and emission line diagnostics best indicate the bolometric powers of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), especially given the attenuation caused by the circumnuclear material and the possible contamination by components related to star formation. Here we use mid-IR spectra along with multiwavelength data to investigate the merit of various diagnostics of AGN radiative power, including the mid-IR [Ne III] lambda25.89 mum and [O IV] lambda25.89 mum fine-structure lines, the optical [O III] lambda5007 forbidden line, and mid-IR 24 mum, 5 GHz radio, and X-ray contin…
BHR 160 is a virtually unstudied cometary globule within the Sco OB4 association in Scorpius at a distance of 1600pc. It is part of a system of cometary clouds which face the luminous O star HD155806. BHR 160 is special because it has an intense bright rim. We attempt to derive physical parameters for BHR 160 and to understand its structure and the origin of its peculiar bright rim. BHR 160 was mapped in the $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O (2-1) and (1-0) and CS (3-2) and (2-1) lines. These data, augmented with stellar photometry derived from the ESO VVV survey, were used to derive the mass…
Most of the optically classified low ionisation narrow emission-line regions (LINERs) nuclei host an active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, how they fit into the unified model (UM) of AGN is still an open question. The aims of this work are to study at mid-infrared (mid-IR) (1) the Compton-thick nature of LINERs; and (2) the disappearance of the dusty torus in LINERs predicted from theoretical arguments. We have compiled all the available low spectral resolution mid-IR spectra of LINERs from the IRS/Spitzer (40 LINERs). We have complemented this sample with Spitzer/IRS spectra of PGQSOs, S1s, …
We present Spitzer/IRS low resolution observations of 11 compact circumstellar bubbles from the MIPSGAL 24 μm Galactic Plane Survey. We find that this set of MIPSGAL bubbles (MBs) is divided into two categories, and that this distinction correlates with the morphologies of the MBs in the mid- IR. The four MBs with central sources in the mid-IR exhibit dust-rich, low excitation spectra, and their 24 μm emission is accounted for by the dust continuum. The seven MBs without central sources in the mid-IR have spectra dominated by high excitation gas lines (e.g., [O IV] 26.0 μm, [Ne V] 14.3 and 24.…
We measured the mid-infrared (MIR) extinction using Spitzer photometry and spectroscopy (3.6--37 micron) for a sample of Milky Way sightlines (mostly) having measured ultraviolet extinction curves. We used the pair method to determine the MIR extinction that we then fit with a power law for the continuum and modified Drude profiles for the silicate features. We derived 16 extinction curves having a range of A(V) (1.8-5.5) and R(V) values (2.4-4.3). Our sample includes two dense sightlines that have 3 micron ice feature detections and weak 2175 A bumps. The average A(lambda)/A(V) diffuse sightl…
Star Formation and the Interstellar Medium In Nearby Tidal Streams (SAINTS): Spitzer Mid-infrared Spectroscopy and Imaging of Intergalactic Star-forming Objects
We present $Spitzer$ IRAC mid-infrared point source catalogs for mosaics covering the fields of the nearby ($\lesssim$4 Mpc) galaxies NGC 55, NGC 253, NGC 2366, NGC 4214, and NGC 5253. We detect a total of 20159 sources in these five fields. Point spread function photometry was performed on sources detected in both $Spitzer$ IRAC 3.6 $μ$m and 4.5 $μ$m bands at greater than 3$σ$ above background. These data were then supplemented by aperture photometry in the IRAC 5.8 $μ$m and 8.0 $μ$m bands conducted at the positions of the shorter wavelength sources. For sources with no detected object in the…
We present continuous, monochromatic star formation rate (SFR) indicators over the mid-infrared wavelength range of 6-70 micron. We use a sample of 58 star forming galaxies (SFGs) in the Spitzer-SDSS-GALEX Spectroscopic Survey (SSGSS) at z<0.2, for which there is a rich suite of multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy from the ultraviolet through to the infrared. The data from the Spitzer infrared spectrograph (IRS) of these galaxies, which spans 5-40 micron, is anchored to their photometric counterparts. The spectral region between 40-70 micron is interpolated using dust model fits to th…
We present a mid-infrared (IR) sample study of nearby ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) using multi-epoch observations with the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Spitzer/IRAC observations taken after 2014 were obtained as part of the Spitzer Infrared Intensive Transients Survey (SPIRITS). Our sample includes 96 ULXs located within 10 Mpc. Of the 96~ULXs, 12 have candidate counterparts consistent with absolute mid-IR magnitudes of supergiants, and 16 counterparts exceeded the mid-IR brightness of single supergiants and are thus more consistent with star clusters or n…
We present luminosity functions derived from a spectroscopic survey of AGN selected from Spitzer Space Telescope imaging surveys. Selection in the mid-infrared is significantly less affected by dust obscuration. We can thus compare the luminosity functions of the obscured and unobscured AGN in a more reliable fashion than by using optical or X-ray data alone. We find that the AGN luminosity function can be well described by a broken power-law model in which the break luminosity decreases with redshift. At high redshifts ($z>1.6$), we find significantly more AGN at a given bolometric luminosity…
We present ~120,000 Spitzer/IRAC candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) based on surveys of the Galactic midplane between l~255 deg and 110 deg, including the GLIMPSE I, II, and 3D, Vela-Carina, Cygnus X, and SMOG surveys (613 square degrees), augmented by near-infrared catalogs. We employed a classification scheme that uses the flexibility of a tailored statistical learning method and curated YSO datasets to take full advantage of IRAC's spatial resolution and sensitivity in the mid-infrared ~3-9 micron range. Multi-wavelength color/magnitude distributions provide intuition about how the clas…
Probing the Interstellar Medium of z~1 Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies through Interferometric Observations of CO and Spitzer Mid-infrared Spectroscopy
This study presents sensitive MIR photometry obtained with the Spitzer/IRAC for a young cluster in Sh 2-208 (S208) located in one of the lowest-metallicity HII regions in the Galaxy, ${\rm [O/H]} = -0.8$ dex. Previous studies suggested that the cluster is $\sim$0.5-Myr old and has a distance of $D = 4$ kpc, which is consistent with the astrometric distance from Gaia EDR3. In $\sim$$3.5 \times 4$-arcmin field, 96 sources were detected in at least one MIR band at $\ge$10$σ$, covering intermediate-mass stars with $\sim$1.0-$M_\odot$ mass detection limit. Total 41 probable cluster members were ide…
The Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S4G) is the largest available database of deep, homogeneous middle-infrared (mid-IR) images of galaxies of all types. The survey, which includes 2352 nearby galaxies, reveals galaxy morphology only minimally affected by interstellar extinction. This paper presents an atlas and classifications of S4G galaxies in the Comprehensive de Vaucouleurs revised Hubble-Sandage (CVRHS) system. The CVRHS system follows the precepts of classical de Vaucouleurs (1959) morphology, modified to include recognition of other features such as inner, outer, and n…
