We survey different approaches to study the invariance of the white noise for the periodic KdV. We mainly discuss the following two methods. First, we discuss the PDE method, following Bourgain \cite{BO4}, in a general framework. Then, we show how it can be applied to the low regularity setting of the white noise for KdV by introducing the Besov-type space \hat{b}^s_{p, \infty}, sp< -1. Secondly, we describe the probabilistic method by Quastel, Valkó, and the author \cite{OQV}. We also use this probabilistic approach to study the white noise for mKdV.
In this paper we study weak continuity of the dynamical systems for the KdV equation in H^{-3/4}(R) and the modified KdV equation in H^{1/4}(R). This topic should have significant applications in the study of other properties of these equations such as finite time blow-up and asymptotic stability and instability of solitary waves. The spaces considered here are borderline Sobolev spaces for the corresponding equations from the viewpoint of the local well-posedness theory. We first use a variant of the method of [5] to prove weak continuity for the mKdV, and next use a similar result for a mKdV…
We establish a new a priori bound for $ L^2 $-bounded sequences of solutions to the mKdV equations on the torus. This first enable us to construct weak solutions in $ L^2$ for this equation and to check that the "solutions" constructed by Kappeler and Topalov in the defocusing case satisfy the equation in some weak sense. In a second time, we prove that the solution-map associated with the mKdV and the KdV equation are discontinuous for the $ H^s(\T) $ topology for respectively $ s<0$ and $ s<-1$. These last results are sharp.
The integrability of a coupled KdV-mKdV system is tested by means of singularity analysis. The true Lax pair associated with this system is obtained by the use of prolongation technique.
We study well-posedness of the complex-valued modified KdV equation (mKdV) on the real line. In particular, we prove local well-posedness of mKdV in modulation spaces $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$ for $s \ge \frac14$ and $2\leq p < \infty$. For $s < \frac 14$, we show that the solution map for mKdV is not locally uniformly continuous in $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$. By combining this local well-posedness with our previous work (2018) on an a priori global-in-time bound for mKdV in modulation spaces, we also establish global well-posedness of mKdV in $M^{2,p}_{s}(\mathbb{R})$ for $s \ge \frac14$ and $…
Stationary solutions on a bounded interval for an initial-boundary value problem to Korteweg--de~Vries and modified Korteweg--de~Vries equation (for the last one both in focusing and defocusing cases) are constructed. The method of the study is based on the theory of conservative systems with one degree of freedom. The obtained solutions turn out to be periodic. Exact relations between the length of the interval and coefficients of the equations which are necessary and sufficient for existence of nontrivial solutions are established.
We prove the local well posedness for the KdV equation in the modulation space $M^{-1}_{2,1}(\mathbb{R})$. Our method is to substitute the dyadic decomposition by the uniform decomposition in the discrete Bourgain space. This wellposedness result enables us to show that the solution map is discontinuous at the origin with respect to the $H^{s} $-topology as soon as $s<-1$. Making use of the Miura transform we also deduce a discontinuity result for the $ H^s(\Real) $-topology, $s<0 $, for the solution map associated with the focussing and defocussing mKdV equations.
We study the well-posedness of the complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) on the circle at low regularity. In our previous work (2019), we introduced the second renormalized mKdV equation, based on the conservation of momentum, which we proposed as the correct model to study the complex-valued mKdV outside of $H^\frac12(\mathbb{T})$. Here, we employ the method introduced by Deng-Nahmod-Yue (2019) to prove local well-posedness of the second renormalized mKdV equation in the Fourier-Lebesgue spaces $\mathcal{F}L^{s,p}(\mathbb{T})$ for $s\geq \frac12$ and $1\leq p <\infty$. As …
This paper seeks to derive the modified KdV (mKdV) equation using a novel approach from systems generated from abstract Lagrangians that possess a two-parameter symmetry group. The method to do uses a modified modulation approach, which results in the mKdV emerging with coefficients related to the conservation laws possessed by the original Lagrangian system. Alongside this, an adaptation of the method of Kuramoto is developed, providing a simpler mechanism to determine the coefficients of the nonlinear term. The theory is illustrated using two examples of physical interest, one in stratified …
The initial value problems for the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and modified KdV (mKdV) equations under periodic and decaying boundary conditions are considered. These initial value problems are shown to be globally well-posed in all $L^2$-based Sobolev spaces $H^s$ where local well-posedness is presently known, apart from the $H^{1/4} (\R)$ endpoint for mKdV. The result for KdV relies on a new method for constructing almost conserved quantities using multilinear harmonic analysis and the available local-in-time theory. Miura's transformation is used to show that global well-posedness of modified K…
We prove the sharp global well-posedness results for the initial value problems (IVPs) associated to the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation and a system modeled by the coupled modified Korteweg-de Vries equations (mKdV-system). To obtain our results we use the second generation of the modified energy and almost conserved quantities, more precisely, the refined I-method introduced by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao.
Bourgain(1993) proved that the periodic modified KdV equation (mKdV) is locally well-posed in Sobolev spave H^s(T), s >= 1/2, by introducing new weighted Sobolev spaces X^s,b, where the uniqueness holds conditionally, namely in the intersection of C([0, T]; H^s) and X^s,b. In this paper, we establish unconditional well-posedness of mKdV in H^s(T), s >= 1/2, i.e. we in addition establish unconditional uniqueness in C([0, T]; H^s), s >= 1/2, of solutions to mKdV. We prove this result via differentiation by parts. For the endpoint case s = 1/2, we perform careful quinti- and septi-linear estimate…
A noncommutative KdV-type equation is introduced extending the Baecklund chart in [S. Carillo, M. Lo Schiavo, and C. Schiebold, SIGMA 12 (2016)]. This equation, called meta-mKdV here, is linked by Cole-Hopf transformations to the two noncommutative versions of the mKdV equations listed in [P.J. Olver and V.V. Sokolov Commun. Math. Phys. 193 (1998), Theorem 3.6]. For this meta-mKdV, and its mirror counterpart, recursion operators, hierarchies and an explicit solution class are derived.
We study the complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries equation (mKdV) on the circle. We first consider the real-valued setting and show global well-posedness of the (usual) renormalized mKdV equation in the Fourier-Lebesgue spaces. In the complex-valued setting, we observe that the momentum plays an important role in the well-posedness theory. In particular, we prove that the complex-valued mKdV equation is ill-posed in the sense of non-existence of solutions when the momentum is infinite, in the spirit of the work on the nonlinear Schrödinger equation by Guo-Oh (2018). This non-existence res…
The Cauchy problem for the higher order equations in the mKdV hierarchy is investigated with data in the spaces $\hat{H}^r_s(\R)$ defined by the norm $$\n{v_0}{\hat{H}^r_s(\R)} := \n{< ξ> ^s\hat{v_0}}{L^{r'}_ξ},\quad < ξ>=(1+ξ^2)^{\frac12}, \quad \frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{r'}=1.$$ Local well-posedness for the $j$th equation is shown in the parameter range $2 \ge r >1$, $s \ge \frac{2j-1}{2r'}$. The proof uses an appropriate variant of the Fourier restriction norm method. A counterexample is discussed to show that the Cauchy problem for equations of this type is in general ill-posed in the $C^0$-uni…
In a recent paper, Kenig, Ponce and Vega study the low regularity behavior of the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS), focusing modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV), and complex Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equations. Using soliton and breather solutions, they demonstrate the lack of local well-posedness for these equations below their respective endpoint regularities. In this paper, we study the defocusing analogues of these equations, namely defocusing NLS, defocusing mKdV, and real KdV, all in one spatial dimension, for which suitable soliton and breather solutions are unavailable. We construct fo…
We consider the Cauchy problem of the modified KdV equation (mKdV). Local well-posedness of this problem is obtained in modulation spaces $M^{1/4}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R})$ $(2\leq q\leq\infty)$. Moreover, we show that the data-to-solution map fails to be $C^3$ continuous in $M^{s}_{2,q}(\mathbb{R})$ when $s<1/4$. It is well-known that $H^{1/4}$ is a critical Sobolev space of mKdV so that it is well-posedness in $H^s$ for $s\geq 1/4$ and ill-posed (in the sense of uniform continuity) in $H^{s'}$ with $s'<1/4$. Noticing that $M^{1/4}_{2,q} \subset B^{1/q-1/4}_{2,q}$ is a sharp embedding and $H^{-1/4}\…
We study the long-time dynamics of complex-valued modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) solitons, which are recognized because they blow-up in finite time. We establish stability properties at the H^1 level of regularity, uniformly away from each blow-up point. These new properties are used to prove that mKdV breathers are H^1 stable, improving our previous result, where we only proved H^2 stability. The main new ingredient of the proof is the use of a Bäcklund transformation which links the behavior of breathers, complex-valued solitons and small real-valued solutions of the mKdV equation. We als…
Periodic waves of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation are identified in the context of a new variational problem with two constraints. The advantage of this variational problem is that its non-degenerate local minimizers are stable in the time evolution of the mKdV equation, whereas the saddle points are unstable. We explore the analytical representation of periodic waves given by Jacobi elliptic functions and compute numerically critical points of the constrained variational problem. A broken pitchfork bifurcation of three smooth solution families is found. Two families represent (…
We address the most general periodic travelling wave of the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation written as a rational function of Jacobian elliptic functions. By applying an algebraic method which relates the periodic travelling waves and the squared periodic eigenfunctions of the Lax operators, we characterize explicitly the location of eigenvalues in the periodic spectral problem away from the imaginary axis. We show that Darboux transformations with the periodic eigenfunctions remain in the class of the same periodic travelling waves of the mKdV equation. In a general setting, there …
In this paper we prove new qualitative features of solutions of KdV on the circle. The first result says that the Fourier coefficients of a solution of KdV in Sobolev space $H^N,\, N\geq 0$, admit a WKB type expansion up to first order with strongly oscillating phase factors defined in terms of the KdV frequencies. The second result provides estimates for the approximation of such a solution by trigonometric polynomials of sufficiently large degree.

We start by constructing a Hilbert manifold T of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of the circle (modulo the group of bi-holomorphic self-mappings of the disc). This space, which could be thought of as a completion of the universal Teichmueller space, is endowed with a right-invariant Kaehler metric. Using results from the theory of quasiconformal mappings we construct an embedding of T into the infinite dimensional Segal-Wilson Grassmannian. The latter turns out to be a very natural ambient space for T. This allows us to prove that T's sectional curvature is negative in the holomorphic d…
The local and global control results for a general higher-order KdV-type operator posed on the unit circle are presented. Using spectral analysis, we are able to prove local results, that is, the equation is locally controllable and exponentially stable. To extend the local results to the global one we captured the smoothing properties of the Bourgain spaces, the so-called propagation of singularities, which are proved with a new perspective. These propagation, together with the Strichartz estimates, are the key to extending the local control properties to the global one, precisely, higher-ord…
We show that breather solutions of the Gardner equation, a natural generalization of the KdV and mKdV equations, are $H^2(\mathbb{R})$ stable. Through a variational approach, we characterize Gardner breathers as minimizers of a new Lyapunov functional and we study the associated spectral problem, through $(i)$ the analysis of the spectrum of explicit linear systems (\emph{spectral stability}), and $(ii)$ controlling degenerated directions by using low regularity conservation laws.
We prove that the KdV equation on the circle remains exactly controllable in arbitrary time with localized control, for sufficiently small data, also in presence of quasi-linear perturbations, namely nonlinearities containing up to three space derivatives, having a Hamiltonian structure at the highest orders. We use a procedure of reduction to constant coefficients up to order zero, classical Ingham inequality and HUM method to prove the controllability of the linearized operator. Then we prove and apply a modified version of the Nash-Moser implicit function theorems by Hörmander.
We study generalized variants of the Burgers equation and the KdV equation on the circle. The main goal of the paper is to show that both extensions can be recast as geodesic equations on a suitable diffeomorphism group of the circle and the corresponding Bott-Virasoro group respectively. As a consequence we obtain that the initial value problem for the Burgers equation with an additional quadratic term is well-posed on a scale of Sobolev spaces on the circle.
