We study the heat semigroup generated by two-dimensional Schroedinger operators with compactly supported magnetic field. We show that if the field is radial, then the large time behavior of the associated heat kernel is determined by its total flux. We also establish some on-diagonal heat kernel estimates and discuss their applications for solutions to the heat equation. An exact formula for the heat kernel, and for its large time asymptotic, is derived in the case of the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field.
We consider Schroedinger operators on compact and non-compact (finite) metric graphs. For such operators we analyse their spectra, prove that their resolvents can be represented as integral operators and introduce trace-class regularisations of the resolvents. Our main result is a complete asymptotic expansion of the trace of the (regularised) heat-semigroup generated by the Schroedinger operator. We also determine the leading coefficients in the expansion explicitly.
Using Moutard transformations we show how explicit examples of two-dimensional Schroedinger operators with fast decaying potential and multidimensional $L_2$-kernel may be constructed
We study Schroedinger operators with Robin boundary conditions on exterior domains in $\R^d$. We prove sharp point-wise estimates for the associated semi-groups which show, in particular, how the boundary conditions affect the time decay of the heat kernel in dimensions one and two. Applications to spectral estimates are discussed as well.
For Schroedinger operators (including those with magnetic fields) with singular (locally integrable) scalar potentials on manifolds of bounded geometry, we study continuity properties of some related integral kernels: the heat kernel, the Green function, and also kernels of some other functions of the operator. In particular, we show the joint continuity of the heat kernel and the continuity of the Green function outside the diagonal. The proof makes intensive use of the Lippmann-Schwinger equation.
We obtain lower and upper bounds on the heat kernel and Green functions of the Schroedinger operator in a random Gaussian magnetic field and a fixed scalar potential. We apply stochastic Feynman-Kac representation, diamagnetic upper bounds and the Jensen inequality for the lower bound. We show that if the covariance of the electromagnetic (vector) potential is increasing at large distances then the lower bound is decreasing exponentially fast for large distances and a large time.
By suitably extending a Feynman-Kac formula of Simon [Canadian Math. Soc. Conf. Proc, 28 (2000), 317-321], we study one-parameter semigroups generated by (the negative of) rather general Schroedinger operators, which may be unbounded from below and include a magnetic vector potential. In particular, a common domain of essential self-adjointness for such a semigroup is specified. Moreover, each member of the semigroup is proven to be a maximal Carleman operator with a continuous integral kernel given by a Brownian-bridge expectation. The results are used to show that the spectral projections of…
We study spectral properties of the Schroedinger operator with an imaginary sign potential on the real line. By constructing the resolvent kernel, we show that the pseudospectra of this operator are highly non-trivial, because of a blow-up of the resolvent at infinity. Furthermore, we derive estimates on the location of eigenvalues of the operator perturbed by complex potentials. The overall analysis demonstrates striking differences with respect to the weak-coupling behaviour of the Laplacian.
We consider the heat semi-group generated by the Laplace operator on metric trees. Among our results we show how the behavior of the associated heat kernel depends on the geometry of the tree. As applications we establish new eigenvalue estimates for Schroedinger operators on metric trees.
We consider a time-dependent one-dimensional nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a symmetric potential double well represented by two delta interactions. Among our results we give an explicit formula for the integral kernel of the unitary semigroup associated with the linear part of the Hamiltonian. Then we establish the corresponding Strichartz-type estimate and we prove local existence and uniqueness of the solution to the original nonlinear problem.
We study solutions to the Cauchy problem for the linear and nonlinear Schroedinger equation with a quadratic Hamiltonian depending on time. For the linear case the evolution operator can be expressed as an integral operator with the explicit formula for the kernel. As a consequence, conditions for local and global in time Strichartz estimates can be established. For the nonlinear case we show local well-posedness. As a particular case we obtain well-posedness for the damped harmonic nonlinear Schroedinger equation.
In the Euclidean space of any dimension d, we consider the heat semigroup generated by the magnetic Schroedinger operator from which an inverse-square potential is subtracted in order to make the operator critical in the magnetic-free case. Assuming that the magnetic field is compactly supported, we show that the polynomial large-time behaviour of the heat semigroup is determined by the eigenvalue problem for a magnetic Schroedinger operator on the (d-1)-dimensional sphere whose vector potential reflects the behaviour of the magnetic field at the space infinity. From the spectral problem on th…
Generalized eigenfunctions of the two-dimensional relativistic Schrödinger operator $H=\sqrt{-Δ}+V(x)$ with $|V(x)|\leq C< x>^{-σ}$, $σ>3/2$, are considered. We compute the integral kernels of the boundary values $R_0^\pm(λ)=(\sqrt{-Δ}-(λ\pm i0))^{-1}$, and prove that the generalized eigenfunctions $ϕ^\pm(x,k)$ are bounded on $R_x^2\times\{k | a\leq |k|\leq b\}$, where $[a,b]\subset(0,\infty)\backslashσ_p(H)$, and $σ_p(H)$ is the set of eigenvalues of $H$. With this fact and the completeness of the wave operators, we establish the eigenfunction expansion for the absolutely continuous subspace …
Based on the Mehler heat kernel of the Schroedinger operator for a free electron in a constant magnetic field an estimate for the kernel of E_A is derived, where E_A represents the kinetic energy of a Dirac electron within the pseudorelativistic no-pair Brown-Ravenhall model. This estimate is used to provide the bottom of the essential spectrum for the two-particle Brown-Ravenhall operator, describing the motion of the electrons in a central Coulomb field and a constant magnetic field, if the central charge is restricted to Z below or equal 86.
We consider the heat equation in the presence of compactly supported magnetic field in the plane. We show that the magnetic field leads to an improvement of the decay rate of the heat semigroup by a polynomial factor with power proportional to the distance of the total magnetic flux to the discrete set of flux quanta. The proof employs Hardy-type inequalities due to Laptev and Weidl for the two-dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operator and the method of self-similar variables and weighted Sobolev spaces for the heat equation. A careful analysis of the asymptotic behaviour of the heat equation…
We study localization effects of disorder on the spectral and dynamical properties of Schroedinger operators with random potentials. The new results include exponentially decaying bounds on the transition amplitude and related projection kernels, including in the mean. These are derived through the analysis of fractional moments of the resolvent, which are finite due to the resonance-diffusing effects of the disorder. The main difficulty which has up to now prevented an extension of this method to the continuum can be traced to the lack of a uniform bound on the Lifshitz-Krein spectral shift a…
We consider the one-dimensional discrete linear Schrodinger (DLS) equation perturbed by a conservative stochastic dynamics, that changes the phase of each particles, conserving the total norm (or number of particles). The resulting total dynamics is a degenerate hypoelliptic diffusion with a smooth stationary state. We will show that the system has a hydrodynamical limit given by the solution of the heat equation. When it is coupled at the boundaries to two Langevin thermostats at two different chemical potentials, we prove that the stationary state, in the limit as N ! 1, satisfies the Fouri…
E. Schroedinger proposed the equation to find the statistical property of a quantum particle on a finite time interval. It is called "Schroedinger's functional equation". Given probability distributions of a particle at initial and terminal times, it determines the joint distribution of a quantum particle at initial and terminal times so that a particle is Markovian. S. Bernstein generalized Schroedinger's idea and introduced the so-called Bernstein processes which are also called reciprocal processes or one-dimensional Markov random fields. The theory of stochastic differential equation for S…
We derive a novel integral representations of Jacobi polynomials in terms of the Gauss hypergeometric function. Such representation is then used to give the explicit integral representation for the Heat kernel on the quantized Riemann sphere.
We study the Borel summability of the small time expansion of the heat kernel for the Schrödinger operator in several dimensions. On the torus, we prove a Poisson formula.
We study the Borel summability of the small time expansion of the heat kernel associated to a first order perturbation of a Laplacian. An explicit formula for this kernel plays a central role. As a consequence, we get a Poisson formula on the torus.
It is well-known that the asymptotic expansion of the trace of the heat kernel for Laplace operators on smooth compact Riemmanian manifolds can be obtained through termwise integration of the asymptotic expansion of the on-diagonal heat kernel. It is the purpose of this work to show that, in certain circumstances, termwise integration can be used to obtain the asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel trace for Laplace operators endowed with a suitable polynomial potential on unbounded domains. This is achieved by utilizing a resummed form of the asymptotic expansion of the on-diagonal heat kern…
We explicitly construct parametrices for magnetic Schrödinger operators on R^d and prove that they provide a complete small-t expansion for the corresponding heat kernel, both on and off the diagonal.
We study semigroups generated by two-dimensional relativistic Hamiltonians with magnetic field. In particular, for compactly supported radial magnetic field we show how the long time behaviour of the associated heat kernel depends on the flux of the field. Similar questions are addressed for Aharonov-Bohm type magnetic field.
We derive the first six coefficients of the heat kernel expansion for the electromagnetic field in a cavity by relating it to the expansion for the Laplace operator acting on forms. As an application we verify that the electromagnetic Casimir energy is finite.
Let us consider a time-dependent differential operator quadratic with respect to the phase variables. Let us consider a multiplication operator defined with the help of a "small" matrix-valued function. Under suitable conditions, we give an "explicit" expression of "the" heat kernel associated to the sum of the two previous operators for small time.
In the sub-Riemannian manifolds, on the one hand, following Baudoin-Garofalo \cite{BaudoinGarofalo}, the upper bound for heat kernels associated to a class of locally subelliptic operators are given under the generalized curvature-dimension inequality with a negative curvature parameter; on the other hand, the argument combining Grigor'yan's integrated maximum principle with Wang's dimension-free Harnack inequality is also shown to derive the upper bound for the heat kernel under the generalized curvature inequality.
We propose a novel derivation of the non-local heat kernel expansion, first studied by Barvinsky, Vilkovisky and Avramidi, based on simple diagrammatic equations satisfied by the heat kernel. For Laplace-type differential operators we obtain the explicit form of the non-local heat kernel form factors to second order in the curvature. Our method can be generalized easily to the derivation of the non-local heat kernel expansion of a wide class of differential operators.
We initiate in this paper the study of analytic properties of the Liouville heat kernel. In particular, we establish regularity estimates on the heat kernel and derive non trivial lower and upper bounds.
We consider a natural generalisation of the Laplace type operators for the case of non-commutative (Moyal star) product. We demonstrate existence of a power law asymptotic expansion for the heat kernel of such operators on T^n. First four coefficients of this expansion are calculated explicitly. We also find an analog of the UV/IR mixing phenomenon when analysing the localised heat kernel.
The geometry of the quaternionic anti-de Sitter fibration is studied in details. As a consequence, we obtain formulas for the horizontal Laplacian and subelliptic heat kernel of the fibration. The heat kernel formula is explicit enough to derive small time asymptotics. Related twistor spaces and corresponding heat kernels are also discussed and the connection to the quaternionic magnetic Laplacian is done.
The fundamental solution of the heat equation on $R^n$ is known as the heat kernel which is also the transition density of a Brownian motion. Similar statements hold when $\R^n$ is replaced by a Lie group. We briefly demonstrate how the results on $R^n$ concerning the heat kernel and Brownian motion may be easily transferred to compact Lie groups using the wrapping map of Dooley and Wildberger.
The paper is devoted to a local heat kernel, which is a special part of the standard heat kernel. Locality means that all considerations are produced in an open convex set of a smooth Riemannian manifold. We study such properties and concepts as uniqueness, a symmetry of the Seeley-DeWitt coefficients, extension on the whole manifold, a family of special functions, and the late-time asymptotics with the use of the path integral formulation.
We consider Laplacians acting on sections of homogeneous vector bundles over symmetric spaces. By using an integral representation of the heat semi-group we find a formal solution for the heat kernel diagonal that gives a generating function for the whole sequence of heat invariants. We show explicitly that the obtained result correctly reproduces the first non-trivial heat kernel coefficient as well as the exact heat kernel diagonals on two-dimensional sphere $S^2$ and the hyperbolic plane $H^2$. We argue that the obtained formal solution correctly reproduces the exact heat kernel diagonal af…

By using an integral representation of the heat semi-group we find a formal solution for the heat kernel diagonal that gives a generating function for the whole sequence of heat invariants. We argue that the obtained formal solution correctly reproduces the exact heat kernel diagonal after a suitable regularization and analytical continuation.
Covariant perturbation expansion is an important method in quantum field theory. In this paper an expansion up to arbitrary order for off-diagonal heat kernels in flat space based on the covariant perturbation expansion is given. In literature, only diagonal heat kernels are calculated based on the covariant perturbation expansion.
