We provide some general theoretical results to guide the optimization of transverse hydrodynamic phenomena in superhydrophobic channels. Our focus is on the canonical micro- and nanofluidic geometry of a parallel-plate channel with an arbitrary two-component (low-slip and high-slip) coarse texture, varying on scales larger than the channel thickness. By analyzing rigorous bounds on the permeability, over all possible patterns, we optimize the area fractions, slip lengths, geometry and orientation of the surface texture to maximize transverse flow. In the case of two aligned striped surfaces, very strong transverse flows are possible. Optimized superhydrophobic surfaces may find applications in passive microfluidic mixing and amplification of transverse electrokinetic phenomena.
Superhydrophobic surfaces reduce drag by combining hydrophobicity and roughness to trap gas bubbles in a micro- and nanoscopic texture. Recent work has focused on specific cases, such as striped grooves or arrays of pillars, with limited theoretical guidance. Here, we consider the experimentally relevant limit of thin channels and obtain rigorous bounds on the effective slip length for any two-component (e.g. low-slip and high-slip) texture with given area fractions. Among all anisotropic textures, parallel stripes attain the largest (or smallest) possible slip in a straight, thin channel for …
Superhydrophobic one-dimensional surfaces reduce drag and generate transverse hydrodynamic phenomena by combining hydrophobicity and roughness to trap gas bubbles in microscopic textures. Recent works in this area have focused on specific cases of superhydrophobic stripes. Here we provide some theoretical results to guide the optimization of the forward flow and transverse hydrodynamic phenomena in a parallel-plate channel with a superhydrophobic trapezoidal texture, varying on scales larger than the channel thickness. The permeability of such a thin channel is shown to be equivalent to that o…
This fluid dynamics video describes droplet impingement experiments performed on superhydrophobic surfaces. When droplets of pure water are impinged upon superhydrophobic surfaces, a region of thin coherent jets are observed for Weber numbers between 5 and 15. Also, peripheral splashing is observed for Weber numbers above about 200. When the viscosity of the droplet is increased by mixing glycerol with the water, the thin jets are not observed and peripheral splashing is delayed somewhat. In the Weber number range where pure water droplets are observed to splash peripherally, the water/glycero…
We consider pressure-driven flows in wide microchannels, and discuss how a transverse shear, generated by misaligned superhydrophobic walls, impacts cross-sectional spreading of Brownian particles. We show that such a transverse shear can induce an advective superdiffusion, which strongly enhances dispersion of particles compared to a normal diffusion, and that maximal cross-sectional spreading corresponds to a crossover between its subballistic and superballistic regimes. This allows us to argue that an advective superdiffusion can be used for boosting dispersion of particles at smaller Pecle…
Anisotropic super-hydrophobic surfaces have the potential to greatly reduce drag and enhance mixing phenomena in microfluidic devices. Recent work has focused mostly on cases of super-hydrophobic stripes. Here, we analyze a relevant situation of cosine variation of the local slip length. We derive approximate formulae for maximal (longitudinal) and minimal (transverse) directional effective slip lengths that are in good agreement with the exact numerical solution and lattice-Bolzmann simulations for any surface slip fraction. The cosine texture can provide a very large effective (forward) slip…
Numerical simulation of convective heat transfer over a stationary and transversely oscillating partial super-hydrophobic cylinder has been performed using OpenFOAM libraries. Superhydrophobicity of the cylinder surface has been addressed by means of a partial slip boundary condition. Applying the slip condition to the surface of the stationary cylinder causes the drag and the rms lift coefficients to reduce by 46 and 75 percent, respectively. It also augments the average Nusselt number by 55 percent accompanied by a 21 percent increase of the natural shedding frequency. The partially superhyd…
Aligned superhydrophobic surfaces with the same texture orientation reduce drag in the channel and generate secondary flows transverse to the direction of the applied pressure gradient. Here we show that a transverse shear can be easily generated by using superhydrophobic channels with misaligned textured surfaces. We propose a general theoretical approach to quantify this transverse flow by introducing the concept of an effective shear tensor. To illustrate its use, we present approximate theoretical solutions and Dissipative Particle Dynamics simulations for striped superhydrophobic channels…
We investigate directly at the microscale the morphology of the electrowetting induced transition between the Cassie-Baxter and Wenzel states for a water droplet on a superhydrophobic surface. Our experiments demonstrate that the transition originates in a very narrow annular region near the macroscopic contact line, which is first invaded by water and causes a thin film of air to be entrapped below. At high applied voltages, a growing fraction of microscopic air-pockets collapse, resulting in a partialWenzel state. Modulations in the intensity of the light reflected from individual micro-meni…
We report results of dissipative particle dynamics simulations and develop a semi-analytical theory of an anisotropic flow in a parallel-plate channel with two superhydrophobic striped walls. Our approach is valid for any local slip at the gas sectors and an arbitrary distance between the plates, ranging from a thick to a thin channel. It allows us to optimize area fractions, slip lengths, channel thickness and texture orientation to maximize a transverse flow. Our results may be useful for extracting effective slip tensors from global measurements, such as the permeability of a channel, in ex…
At finite Reynolds numbers particles migrate across flow streamlines to their equilibrium positions in microchannels. Such a migration is attributed to an inertial lift force, and it is well-known that the equilibrium location of neutrally-buoyant particles is determined only by their size and the Reynolds number. Here we demonstrate that the decoration of a bottom wall of the channel by superhydrophobic grooves provides additional possibilities for manipulation of neutrally-buoyant particles. It is shown that the effective anisotropic hydrodynamic slip of such a bottom wall can be readily use…
By means of lattice-Boltzmann simulations the drag force on a sphere of radius R approaching a superhydrophobic striped wall has been investigated as a function of arbitrary separation h. Superhydrophobic (perfect-slip vs. no-slip) stripes are characterized by a texture period L and a fraction of the gas area $ϕ$. For very large values of h/R we recover the macroscopic formulae for a sphere moving towards a hydrophilic no-slip plane. For h/R=O(1) and smaller the drag force is smaller than predicted by classical theories for hydrophilic no-slip surfaces, but larger than expected for a sphere in…
The study reports the aspects of postimpact hydrodynamics of ferrofluid droplets on superhydrophobic SH surfaces in the presence of a horizontal magnetic field. A wide gamut of dynamics was observed by varying the impact Weber number We, the Hartmann number Ha and the magnetic field strength manifested through the magnetic Bond number Bom. For a fixed We 60, we observed that at moderately low Bom 300, droplet rebound off the SH surface is suppressed. The noted We is chosen to observe various impact outcomes and to reveal the consequent ferrohydrodynamic mechanisms. We also show that ferrohydro…
Many biological materials such as cervical mucus and collagen gel possess a fibrous micro-structure. This micro-structure affects the emergent mechanical properties of the material, and hence the functional behaviour of the system. We consider the canonical problem of stretching a thin sheet of transversely-isotropic viscous fluid as a simplified version of the spinnbarkeit test for cervical mucus. We propose a novel solution to the model constructed by Green & Friedman by manipulating the model to a form amenable to arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian techniques. The system of equations, reduced by…
We consider the control of a three-dimensional thin liquid film on a flat substrate, inclined at a non-zero angle to the horizontal. Controls are applied via same-fluid blowing and suction through the substrate surface. We consider both overlying and hanging films, where the liquid lies above or below the substrate, respectively. We study the weakly nonlinear evolution of the system, which is governed by a forced Kuramoto--Sivashinsky equation in two space dimensions. The uncontrolled problem exhibits three ranges of dynamics depending on the incline of the substrate: stable flat film solution…
Using numerical simulations, we investigate the effects of Marangoni stresses induced by surfactants on the effective slip length of liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) with transverse grooves. The surfactants are assumed soluble in the external liquid shearing the surface and can adsorb onto the interfaces. Two different adsorption models are used: a classical Frumkin model and a more advanced model that better describes the decrease of surface tension for minuscule concentrations. The simulations show that LIS may face even more severe effects of surfactants than previously investigated superhydro…
We study contact line induced instabilities for a thin film of fluid under destabilizing gravitational force in three dimensional setting. In the previous work (Phys. Fluids, {\bf 22}, 052105 (2010)), we considered two dimensional flow, finding formation of surface waves whose properties within the implemented long wave model depend on a single parameter, $D=(3Ca)^{1/3}\cotα$, where $Ca$ is the capillary number and $α$ is the inclination angle. In the present work we consider fully 3D setting and discuss the influence of the additional dimension on stability properties of the flow. In particul…
The equations in conservative form for nonlinear waves modeling on a liquid film flowing down a vertical plane have been investigated. It has been found that in the computational domain extended along the transverse axis the equations with boundary conditions are invariant under parity transformation. It is numerically shown that for moderate Reynolds numbers the steady-state travelling solutions of the equations have the detected symmetry. It is demonstrated that using this symmetry for the numerical solution of the problem by Galerkin methods significantly increases the efficiency of calcula…
We analyze the linear stability of the edge of a thin liquid metal layer subject to a transverse high-frequency AC magnetic field. The layer is treated as a perfectly conducting liquid sheet that allows us to solve the problem analytically for both a semi-infinite geometry with a straight edge and a thin disk of finite radius. It is shown that the long-wave perturbations of a straight edge are monotonically unstable when the wave number exceeds some critical value $k_c,$ which is determined by the surface tension and the linear density of the electromagnetic force acting on the edge. The highe…
The incompressible boundary layer in the axial flow past a cylinder has been shown Tutty et. al.(\cite{tutty}) to be stabler than a two-dimensional boundary layer, with the helical mode being the least stable. In this paper the secondary instability of this flow is studied. The laminar flow is shown here to be always stable at high transverse curvatures to secondary disturbances, which, together with a similar observation for the linear modes implies that the flow past a thin cylinder is likely to remain laminar. The azimuthal wavenumber of the pair of least stable secondary modes ($m_+$ and $…
We analyze a solenoidal motion in a vertically vibrated freely suspended thin smectic film. We demonstrate analytically that transverse oscillations of the film generate two-dimensional vortices in the plane of the film owing to hydrodynamic nonlinearity. An explicit expression for the vorticity of the in-plane film motion in terms of the film displacement is obtained. The air around the film is proven to play a crucial role, since it changes the dispersion relation of transverse oscillations and transmits viscous stresses to the film, modifying its bending motion. We propose possible experime…
Using three-dimensional numerical simulations, we demonstrate the growth saturation of an unstable thin liquid film on micropatterned hydrophilic-hydrophobic substrates. We consider different transverse-striped micropatterns, characterized by the total fraction of hydrophilic coverage and the width of the hydrophilic stripes. We compare the growth of the film on the micropatterns to the steady states observed on homogeneous substrates, which correspond to a saturated sawtooth and growing finger configurations for hydrophilic and hydrophobic substrates, respectively. The proposed micropatterns …
In this work, the shear-induced electrokinetic streaming potential present in free-surface electrolytic flows subjected to a gradient in surface tension is assessed. Firstly, for a Couette flow with fully resolved electric double layer (EDL), the streaming potential per surface stress as a function of the Debye parameter and surface potential is analyzed. By contrast to the Smoluchowski limit in pressure-driven channel flow, the shear-induced streaming potential vanishes for increasing Debye parameter (infinitely thin EDL), unless the free surface contains (induced) surface charge or the flow …
Transport phenomena involving condensate liquids generated from the phase change heat transfer in microchannels and in engineered superhydrophobic surfaces require consideration of slip effects. In this study, the laminar film condensation over upward facing flat slabs and circular disks of finite sizes with free edges in the presence of wall slip effects is investigated. By considering the Navier slip model and extending the classical Nusselt analysis, the mass, momentum, and energy of the liquid film in two-dimensional and axisymmetric coordinates are solved for the film thickness and the he…
